Updating a rooted Nexus to 4.1 - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey,
Since Google MAY gonna release 4.1 today. Is there a way to update the firmware to 4.1 without any big problems? Or should I wait for a Nightly release?
Thanks!

I'm kind of confused about your question because there is like three directions you're asking about. First of all, if you're asking if you can update your software to 4.1 as soon as it comes out without any problems, I don't see why not. Google may post their factory images on their site, which you can download and flash via ADB. Google may also just update OTA, in which case we need to wait for a leak, then someone will post it here on XDA. Otherwise you can wait until someone cooks up a clean 4.1 rom, in which case you can flash that straight through your recovery. By "nightly" I think of CyanogenMod, which will likely take a little longer than custom roms, so you're going to have to wait a little if you want a Cyanogen 4.1-based nightly.

If you're stock, just wait for the OTA notification or flash the new stock image/update file when Google posts it.
If you're on a custom ROM wait for their update or return to stock.

Google WON'T release JB today. Today is the announcement and showing what it does and so forth. Expect it in, perhaps, a couple of weeks, to be nice.

If I'm on stock 4.0.4 but rooted will the 4.1 OTA update be fine to download and install like normal an possibly restore root using voodoo ota rootkeeper or do I need to flash the whole Google image an start from scratch, I think that's what the thread is about.

Noo! I rotted my 4.0.4 and I have CM9 nightly on it.
Do I reset the whole device again for an update to 4.1 (so start from zero again).
But it gold already solved!
Thanks!!

depends on how much stock u are
if u used some toolkits, it (or you manually) may have flashed an unsecured boot (kernel) image to give u full root even with adb..so your kernel may be not stock anymore and u need to reflash the stock one
if u got root (only superuser app and su binary) on the stock rom, stock kernel, stock recovery, stock radio and stock bootloader (no matter if locked or unlocked)..then u are ok

The service provider has nothing to do it. Some people are ignorant and have unrealistic expectations of when we'll start seeing the JB updates.

In this case, it does. Updates for mysidpr builds (i.e., builds for toroplus devices used by Sprint) do not come directly from Google, so they will certainly come after updates for yakju/takju and mysid builds...

the problem is that there are 3 gnexus (or more??) GSM global (maguro, the international one), CDMA (toro, for Verizon) and GSM Sprint (toroplus, for sprint)
only the gsm maguro is the one receive the updates first, the otehr 2 phones may have some little delays due to operator approval

Sorry Fabio, but as soon as the source code is released from the phone manufacturer, the devs can go to work. We don't have to wait for the provider to release the update. As per example: All three versions of the Optimus LTE (P930, SU640, and 6200) received ICS before the providers approved it. Source code leaks do happen.
If you want an official OTA update, then wait for the provider to approve it. I'm not holding my breath, especially if the device is built for use on an LTE network.

I hope someone can post the radios as flashable zip. Gotta be patient hehe
I guess if u clear the Google services framework within app and press check for update... perhaps it'll work =]… if it doesn't the first time.. try 10 more times. It will say last checked on 1969 ... disregard that

Looks like it is rolling out (or at least starting to).

Just reading through the comments on the article, seems a couple people are getting (Much) better signal strength. Whatever they did it seems to have worked! (Maybe they just poured butter all over the radio code?)

Potentially! Are they comparing them to the leaked 4.0.4 radios? Doubtful since they upgraded and were presumably on 4.0.2 lol.
Either way, someone needs to find the images and make a flashable zip. I need something to do at work, nah mean?
So if I am running Liquid (4.04) will all I have to do is flash the new radios once they are available?
Sorry for the noob question. Just got my nexus last week and new to the flashing scene.

Yes. Radios are compatible with pretty much anything. They are separate from the rom, and do not even "stick" with a nandroid.
OK I'm running the leaked 4.0.4... I'll have to revert to 4.0.2 yo receive this correct? And I installed Franco's kernel last night. Anywhere I can pick up stock kernel?

If I root my phone, will my sms(which arent sycronised) deleted?and what about the rest of my information on the phone? can it damage my phone?
Rooting and flashing ROM's can damage your handset if you don't know what you're doing. Most flashing errors can be erectified though.
Where are you located in the world?
Verizon and Sprint are US based LTE handsets, they arent sold outside the states since they cant work on other LTE networks. Take a picture of your "About phone" page (screenshots can be taken with pressing "Volume down + Power" simultaniously.

Swiftkey'ed on my CM9 Galaxy Nexus
I understand your confusion. A Nexus phone should get the update as soon as possible.
I just updated my phone yesterday, thanks to efrant how to guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170&highlight=yakjuzs
the problem is so many builds, I learned that yakju build is directly supported by google. However, today I learned that the build takju got the Jellybean update. Question what about the rest, yakjuux, yakjuzs, yakjujp.....etc.? I don't know, only android team knows the update process, so I hope they post something about that in google+, but I doubt that.
We have to wait, either get it OTA(which my never happen) or flash the update manually as soon google post the update URL's specified for your phone build.
If you have quadrant standard installed you can see your build under system information.

[ROM][INFO] Completely STOCK 4.1 Jelly Bean

I'm just providing information and a link for people (like me) who want a completely stock JB ROM that is not rooted, tweaked, or messed with in any way at all. This is the stock JB that Google used for their JB nexus demonstrations.
THIS IS NOT MY WORK...I AM SIMPLY PROVIDING A LINK TO THE COMPLETELY STOCK JELLY BEAN ROM. AGAIN, THIS IS NOT MY WORK OR LINK.
ALSO, THE FILE NAME SHOWS "TAKJU" WHICH IS THE USA GALAXY NEXUS (THAT IS PURCHASED FROM GOOGLE PLAY STORE), SO I'M NOT SURE IF IT WILL WORK CORRECTLY ON ANY OTHER UNLOCKED NEXUS' (LIKE THE YAKJU). I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU MAY DO TO YOUR PHONE.
Having read all the information above, here is the link:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/device/maguro/developer/clockworkmod?manifest=http%3A%2F%2Fgh-pages.clockworkmod.com%2FROMManagerManifest%2Fclockworkmod.js&name=ClockworkMod&deviceName=Google%20Galaxy%20Nexus%20(GSM
I simply used the galaxy nexus toolkit (see sticky thread in this section) to unlock my phone and flash CWM (I didn't need to root), and then flashed the stock JB via CWM.
Thanks! Just unlocked, flashed the JB image and re-locked.
Now I'm (not rooted) and back to stock and locked JB!

What makes you think that just because these are test builds pushed out to I/O devices they are going to have to be rooted and unlocked to be updated? That doesn't make any sense. Think about it:
Google supplies GNex to I/O attendees.
Google pushes out OTA to those devices for JB (no unlocking/rooting required to receive)
Why wouldn't Google later push an update for devices on pre-release JB to bring them to final release builds? What this means is that there will be two OTA files being pushed, one for IMM76K -> JRN*** and for JRN84D -> JRN***.
I have a very hard time believing Google would require I/O devices be unlocked and rooted to install the official firmware.

Reverted to stock for JB OTA. Anyone else??

So i was playing around with the I/O leak of JB and it is gosh darn fast but i really want to see this update so i reverted back to stock ICS and locked my boot loader. Anyone else do this in wait for the OTA???
I have no interest in waiting really. I can live with a buggy phone as long as the essentials work. I love putting new rooms on and testing the features. I think that waiting for ota is pointless for most of the people here when they want the latest and greatest with mods and patches. However, to each there own and just putting in my two cents.

Nope, because 20 minutes after the first person gets it there is going to be a stock rom posted here that is prerooted and ready to go.
Completely no reason to lock the bootloader as far as I'm concerned.

I'm waiting. Personally I prefer the complete package. I'm not even rooted. I haven't rooted since my Samsung Epic. The first one. I've been thru 4 Android devices since then. I just prefer the stock experience and I'd rather not flash something that I can't enjoy in its entirety due to bugs and functions not working. And flashing and modding gets old to me since I don't have as much time anymore.

i don't understand this thread, i thought these *were* OTA releases?? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20843237&postcount=1)
Today I upgraded from (4.0.4 yakjudv IMM76K -> 4.1.1 yakju JRO03C) and it seems to be working perfectly. Can you clarify what you mean by the I/O leaked JB as I thought the version on that link will be the official release as everyone gets...
I'll be going back to stock to catch OTA, or grab the verified and official files if posted. I'm a bit of a purist so I like unmodified code if going for the OEM experience. I also prefer to root/install myself for learning/practice purposes vs using a "modified for me" stock ROM.
For me, a strong motivator for purchasing the Nexus was to learn/tinker with it. So going to stock JB first, then eventually trying the various ROM flavors that come out is very exciting to me.

Official releases out now are for GSM only, he may be referring to a previous leaked release before official or perhaps he has a CDMA device.
No offense but I don't get how installing from official updates is not stock
What I did:
1. downloaded 4.0.4 takju factory image
2. flashed it using fastboot
3. downloaded official OTA 4.0.4 takju to 4.1.1 tajku
4. flashed the ota using temporary cwm boot
5. factory reset
Won't this process give a pure stock experience? I didn't lock the bootloader because I don't have to.
Yes to stock experience. I mentioned "verified and official if posted". What I was referring to was xjman's post on using a 'pre-rooted' stock ROM. I'd rather root myself manually and know that the files came direct from Google untouched.
Your procedure is exactly what I'll be doing if I don't catch the OTA.
I tried to wait, but I couldn't so I flashed a stock 4.1.1 ROM. I'm impatient.

Completely no reason to lock the bootloader as far as I'm concerned.

Well no..... but since i was at the bootloader screen and its not that hard.
About a week ago I flashed a takju image over my yakju as the belief was takju would get it first... so I updated to 4.1.1 via methods shown here for OTA update and liked it....
But today I reverted back to 4.0.4 yakju simply because I didn't feel Wallet should reside on my phone if I can't see or use it, and instantly got the update over the air. Phone works just the same without the wallet weight. lol
I'm probably going to flash the full factory image when it comes out too.. I mean, why not. lol
Yeah. I'll look into custom roms for JB or see the 4.0 sense ROM port when its stable enough.

I dont understand. If you have one HTC device you want a non sense rom, but if you dont have one HTC you want ir.... Weard....
The same happens with other frameworks and ui changes.
Please dont look to my signature (but the s3 firmware is made for humans)....

Go from 4.1.1 to 4.2.1 How to??

Hey guys, just bought this phone off craigslist today to upgrade from my LG Revolution. I've used roms with the Revo so I'm not a total stranger. I'm wondering how to upgrade to 4.2.1, my phone doesn't seem to get the OTA update, I downloaded the zip to flash and after I flashed it in CWM it the version didn't change under my system info.
I have the verizon version. thanks!
The OTA isn't out for the Toro, the Verizon version. I think you need to do a little reading before you accidentally damage your new phone flashing something not intended for it.

Yea, I haven't started flashing any roms yet, just trying to figure out what I need to be doing/cant' do
whats the latest version thats out and how do I get it?
Latest for toro is 4.1.2. You can flash a rooted stock version or try to get the OTA notification to show up.

Google has released the 4.2.1 binaries, so now every ROM baker and their brother can put out 4.2.1 ROMs; but. . . Verizon hasn't done it yet. Their latest official GNex ROM is 4.1.1 (so there's no point in looking for an OTA update).

Ah..so I technically should be able to flash those roms and be fine even though I'm on 4.1.1?
