Anybody find any decent backplates?
I saw some on ebay that looked okay but the seemed to have a large metal middle section. If it's fake metal, that's fine. I was worried about signal issues.
I would love to have a rubberized textured backplate, like the T-Mobile Galaxy S2.
Sure, there's lots of decent backplates out there. Google it and see if anything piques your interest
It seems like current choices are:

the metal back covers have been reported to make NFC fail.
its also been reported that they do not impact GPS signal at all.
this is on the international version however.
Just thinking out loud here - will the international i9300 battery cover fit on the US LTE devices? Which part of the phone is thicker, the part that the battery cover attaches to or the phone itself? I'd love to get an i9300 white battery cover to replace the AT&T branded one I'm about to get....

Well I bought the metal and although it looks and feels good, it does degrade the signal. GPS and Wifi seemed to be fine but I couldn't get LTE in the places I used to before.
So, I'm back to looking for a new back cover. I like the thinness of the phone so I don't want to put on a case but don't like the slippery OEM back cover. Has anyone tried the fake leather one?

The covers are probably plastic with metal painting, like in cars.
If it was all metal, it will interferre too much with the antennas on the device. This thing has GSM, WiFi, bluetooth, FM Radio, GPS antennas.

I'm interested in this as well as the factory plastic cover has quite a bit of flex to it, which seems necessary for removal. Metal may be too rigid.

You do NOT want to use metal. You would probably really **** the thing up.
Just a thought.
If you want metal, get a metal case that has a plastic/rubber coat for protection of the finish (not the other way around).
Actually, thinking about this, this fake metal case is sounding better

yeah, I agree.. looks like it adds a good 3mm "lip" on the front...
those are over priced, I get them for USD 15 over in china.
Looks pretty cool. I'd be interested how they look and fit on the VZ w/o extended battery.
Ordered as soon as I saw this post, and it FINALLY came in today!
It does add a bit of bulk and weight, but it feels pretty sweet!
My favorite thing about this case though is the fact that the battery door is exposed so I can easily remove the back cover and swap out batteries without taking the whole case off!
With that said, there's definitely a good chance that the extended battery would fit, but the case is pretty fitted on GSM so I honestly don't think it will fit the VZ LTE model.

This guy got one yesterday too.
He has extended battery and verizon phone and claims it works. He did need new screws.
He also had an issue with the headphone jack being too deep, and he needed to buy new ones from radio shack.
Thanks for the review though!
Redirecting everything to here now. Thank you.
The genuine galaxy s3 battery covers are so inexpensive! $7.99 straight from the verizon website.
I'm starting to think a cover with minimal protection that costs more than the battery cover itself is silly.
However, I do think it makes sense to use a bumper case for the phone, one with a slight lip on both the top and bottom to offer some protection to the screen/camera when you lay it flat.
This phone is too beautiful to cover it up......
anyone with me?
I agree sir. I used to have one of those barely there cases on my GS1 but it didn't cover any of the corners or the front so yeah... they don't make sense to me either unless you're just trying to protect your battery cover from scratches. I picked up this rear cover for that exact reason.

Easy.
Most people want to protect their battery cover from dirty tables as well. If you accidental put your GS3 on a wet table, the case is good. The cover not so much.
for me personally, this phone needs a case just for ergonomics. Without one im constantly hitting the volume rocker/power button by accident. at least with a slim case my fingers can go over the buttons without accidentally pressing them. They also cover the sides of the phone and add a little lip protection to the front.
I have a sgp ultra thin btw..

For me...grip. The OEM battery door is so damn slippery. I also have the same the blue/carbon battery door on order for this reason.
You may ask why even bother, but do you really want to risk it. I mean these phones are quite expensive.

I use minimal protection for decent grip and as someone else said, to keep from accidentally hitting buttons. Besides, a little protection is always better than none whatsoever.

lol i had the exact same thoughts as OP...but thought i might put a target on myself to get flamed haha
my opinion is the same. what is the point when these relatively expensive cases provide zero protection on the corners and the front? the battery cover can be easily replaced..and cheap too. the front? not so much...in my opinion if im getting a case for protection then it has to have a decent front raised lip and good corners protection..

while it might provide a unique look to your phone, i'm not sure how much 'protection' a metal bumper will give.
once that aluminum meets concrete, it'll scratch/dent and it wont look as pretty.
I had an Element Case Vapor AR15-V when it was released for the iP4. I loved the look but it killed my reception..
I don't think/know if the S3 would fall victim to such an issue..

The aesthetic side of it is of no importance for me. On the reception issue, it was reportedly due to the antenna being linked to a section of the metal frame the iPhones had, so no problem here regarding the S3 i pressume.

i've always wondered if those slide on thing in the front actually stays on properly or not... I kinda prefer to have the screw on type... i think it's kinda cool.. the only thing I worry about is I don't know if the camera lens would get scratched when i place it on the back.

Screw on type? can you post a link to one of those so I can see what it is, please?
they're all expensive.
Draco Design

and this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Deluxe-...724&pid=100015&prg=1006&rk=1&sd=280995627053&
but it doesn't cover the power and volume button...

That link says it's 13~, but in Amazon UK all Dragon design cases I find are around 70€. Right now I've found this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Otterbox-Co...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1352662906&sr=1-1
well. the otterbox is not a bumper as well, so that's up to you. i had the commuter for the htc DZ and while it is nice, it also doubled the size of the phone.
and yeah, i didn't say the nicer bumpers were cheap,. i said they were expensive.
