My dad always brags to his friends that his phone (he also has the E4GT) is better than the iPhone and then when they ask him why he just tells me to explain. Of course I go on rambling about root stuff and it just goes over their head. So can anyone give me some easy tips on what to say in this scenario? What would make our phone better than the iPhone in simple terms? Of course I know the E4GT murders it for power users like us on XDA, but for the average user, it's different.
Anyways, here's what I can think of:
- 4G
- Bigger Screen
- Better camera (maybe)
- Ability to multitask
- Widgets
- Gapps and integration
- Flash (for when its needed)
- Live wallpapers
- Face unlock
What else?
Added based on responses:
- Replaceable battery
- Easier to tether
- Screen more durable when dropped (Gorilla Glass?)
- App market not as restrictive
- 3G speeds apparently better - depends on towers
Edit: For the record, I'm not insulting Apple products. Most of my family has an iPhone and it functions well. But I'm sure most of us here on developer forums can agree that Android as an OS is superior to iOS

Why do people on xda feel the need to convince others why their phone is better? It is just a piece of glass and plastic made by some some corporation at the hands of borderline slaves in another country. If some people find the iPhone to be more useful for themselves, good for them. Get over it.

I think the fact that we're on xda is why we feel the need to brag about out phones. Most of the people here are not casual users of cell phones.we want the fastest baddest coolest phones out there! And we're gonna hate on anyone that tells us that our phones is anything but that

My reasons for owning an e4gt. (I had the iphone 4s since release and traded up about 2 weeks ago):
4G
customizable
bigger screen
4G (yes I put it twice)
3G is actually faster on this than the iphone from my tests (fiance still has a 4S)
I can use it like a mini computer

I liked the first one better lol. I like the advertisements they're shockingly accurate as to what apple launch day is.
Apple gave their competition a golden opportunity. If I had an iPhone 4 I would not walk out of a store using an upgrade on a phone that looks identical and basically is identical (OK don't flame but an upgraded camera and CPU/gpu isn't worth an upgrade)

The first round of commercials were better, it actually showed some of features of the phone. Still I like the fact that they are firing back at apple...the right and respectable way...not with frivolous lawsuits but through competition.

My girlfriend just upgraded to the 4s from the 4 despite my best efforts. I had her convinced to at least try the at&t gs2 and see if she would like it. But then the salesman said, "I have the gs2 and if you already have an iPhone you'll want to stay with iPhone.."
And she did. Stupid salesman. I was di close to converting someone and I was helpless to intervene because I was at work. Blast.

One of the metrics we are scored on is return rate. I've yet to return an iPhone for anything but a more expensive iPhone. I have definitely returned android devices (including the epic touch) for iPhones. I will give someone a fair discussion on whether they are really getting the right phone without resorting to android snobbery, but I ultimately have to look out for me and not get things returned.

Unless I get an Apple diehard with nothing but Apple products I can usually flop them to Android. More specifically the Epic Touch. Larger screen, expandable memory and showing them mine running all the rooted goodies. Plus, a lot of people don't like that you have to use iTunes.

My girlfriend wants an IPad now but I have nothing else I can convince her of :-( I said the TF prime before it came out but blech. I'm on the lookout for a nice ICS tablet myself, there's not really any android tablets I like except older ones.

The rumors of the prime being crap are greatly exaggerated. I know 2 people that have one and have had no problems. It's a very vocal minority that have issues if you read the forums closely.

I've been a long time iPhone user, since the first one, and I just bought a Galaxy s3 and can honestly say I don't miss it at all. The new one is just more of the same....
This is probably going to get locked down real fast.....but its definitely a BIG dissappointment. Some of my friends are turning into hypocrites real fast saying they'll buy it. Especially when they told me"I don't need a bigger screen, 3.5 is more than enough" this was when I had the x10, captivate, nexus s etc. iPhone users need to wake up.

I was going to reply, just this..LOL so funny. I had every iPhone ever released until 3 weeks ago, got the GS3 and i couldn't be happier, iP5 is just a minor minor revision, playing catch up to the rest of the world.
The only feature I was eagerly looking forward to in the iPoop5 was NFC, but, nope, mobile payments are now set back a few years for everyone.

Actually, what we really need would be Google Wallet support for our GS3's without the hack-around. But we know that wouldn't work with Apple since they're now Anti-Google. Forget where i saw it... think it was on the news earlier, but i like how they put it. Something along the lines of "There is so much competition between Apple and Google, that Apple decided to recreate the world." in regards to Apple's new maps system.

Its almost impossible to get (cheap) nfc tags in Canada. I asked a Best Buy rep at the Eaton Centre store in Toronto a couple of days ago, and he had no idea what NFC was.
I was really hoping the new iphone would have it so that it would become 'mainstream', but guess we have to wait another year now. Also, doesn't help that stupid S Beam is incompatible with Android Beam (try transferring photos to any non-GS3 phone, it will fail..till we get updated to JellyBean)

i remember reading reviews almost 'ranting' about how light the galaxy s and galaxy s ii were. people were saying 'too light', 'does not feel premium because phone does not feel substantial in hand', 'iphone is perfect with high quality weight to it', 'sometimes not sure if in pocket or not'. something along those lines.

Just to explain why some might be that way. Is basically cause we like all forms of technology including competing phones to Android, we research to see what we are up against. I for one think the iPhone is a great device, for people that want simple but works. I've read more about the iPhone then I've read about most new androids... I've also turned many of my friends who were huge on the iPhone to start using android. Overall most people don't dislike the iPhone just the maker...

Yeah and I understand I got some friends like that, I use two phones to work and I found it useless to Carry two android phones... So either the iPhone or the new lumina (which it actually looks really hot right now)

Totally agree, it's their business practices that lost me as a fan back when they released the original iPhone. Still bought iPods until I got my Vibrant in 2010, then they all collected dust until I bought a Nano to use as a watch. But I'll never, ever own an iPhone. Android=freedom to customize and affords the opportunity to learn at least a little on how things work.

Don't get me started on their business practices. The only Apple product I've ever owned was an iPod Video and even that was a gift. It's mind blowing with the iPods how they had all the technology to make the iPod Video the first generation iPod, but they purposefully stripped useful features away so they can slowly add the features back and sell it as a whole new device. The really unexpected part is stupid people still pay for it!
It's the same thing with the iPhone now. There's no reason why the iPhone 4S only had a 800 Mhz processor when everyone else was putting out 1.0 to 1.5Ghz processors. It's the same business tactic. Put out a substandard product now, release a later version with some of the stripped features, make idiots buy the same device twice.

I think it's mainly because there's only one Apple phone releases a year and there's a million Android devices every year. Android now owns more than 70% market share. If the Nexus was the only Android device available, 7 in 10 people would have a Nexus, 2 would have an iPhone, 1 would have a Windows 8 phone and one 1 Blackberry. With the Nexus being the best, its retail value would be higher than the iPhone. It's not that the Apple has high resale value. It's that there's only one IPhone a year from one manufacturer and it happens to be second place in market share. Completely understandable.

Nah dude. Let's be honest here. iPhones are great devices. There's a reason why they're so popular. I do think that Android devices are much better but I used to be an iPhone owner up until the 3gs.
What I don't like is Apple themselves. They can kiss my ass. They're the scum of the tech world.

Exactly. That company sucks and is too high on themselves. They want to sue everyone cause they are afraid of competition. Thanks to them suing Samsung, I was stuck without a phone for 5 weeks back in August and September when my last S2 quit working and I was up in NE on the road

Shiiiet that sucks man lol. Yea my buddy lives in Germany and really wanted a galaxy tab during that whole debacle. Had to settle for a Xoom. I feel ya lol

It comes down to the simple fact that they want to stop all competition by suing everyone because they can't innovate. And they want to charge exorbitant amounts for what they sell. Their thinking is that they should be the only ones around and you either pay their high prices or did without. They are nothing but crooks that are clogging up the legal system to make themselves richer but the moment while people have to scrape and save just to have food. My strong opinion and wish is that their stock drops rapidly and they company dies a quick death cause. That company just makes me sick.
Edit: Sorry for going off on a tangent and ranting.

Also, apple is good at marketing and developing a 'cult' for their brand. Additionally, their devices are simple and limited (insert vehicle comparison analogy here). I am never able to use a modern OS without getting OCD'd to skin/theme/flash/etc so no Apple for me, like most of the people here.

The iphone does not suck its a kick ass phone they also make the best tablets in my honest opinion but I will still never buy another Apple product again...i don't like how they move jobs overseas. If they kept them here they would still make a profit.. They are so big of a company that they could single handedly make a giant dent in the unemployment rate in the United States and offer many people an honest job. Instead its a game to them to see how much money they can aquire when they do not actually need it and never will. I am aware that they are not the only company to do it but it still passes me off... So f*** apple and their rotten greed. I would he happiest if their company went under and they lost everything

Yeah but apple isn't going to fail anytime soon. The company is huge and the average consumer loves their products because they are simple and they just work. If my galaxy s 4g wasnt rooted and custom rom'd then i wouldnt even be able to use it for simple tasks. The average person doesnt have the time for all that. They want something that works properly and works really good. Not everyone wants to mod and constantly theme their device every day of the week. You can do that with apple if you jailbrake your device anyways. I don't understand why do you guys take things like this so personally. So what if apple does what it does. Does it have any relevance with our life or take anything away from you? No. They aren't taking away from YOUR market share or taking away your money so why should it even matter to any of you at all. I'm only in high school and it seems like I understand this better than you guys. It really is not a big deal at all. I know that my next phone isn't gonna be another android unless they come out with a 32gb nexus. I don't have a problem with apple and sure as helI don't have the time to waste constantly tinkering and "fixing" my phone all the damn time just to get it to work. If I don't relash my phone every 2 month, how slow it is is just unbearable.

There is more to it besides android vs apple.. And since you are in high school I will overlook your ignorance.. But when you are out of high school and looking for a job but can't get one because companies like apple would rather get super cheap labor than give back to the country that abled them to do so much.. Then maybe u will be singing a different tune.

My biggest issue with them is their constant law suits against competition that do nothing but clog up the legal system. Those who gain that much power become scared of losing that power and eventually fall hard.

I don't particularly like Apple. I guess it's not the company so much as the people that use their products. Some people, you can just look at, and you know they have an iPhone. I still recommend iPhones to people who are not very tech savvy and just want the phone to make calls and play Angry Birds. Android is your playground. What's the point if you're just going to stand at the door the whole time?

Like im currently using the HTC One S, i dont hate apple but dont love it either, i just want to know if the trade is worth it, leaving the fact if you hate apple or android do you think its worth it?
Well, it is a little hard not to be biased, but a couple of deal breakers for me when I was originally thinking about staying with HTC was the lack of expandable storage and no removable/replaceable battery. To me it's a no brainer on that one and given the option I will never buy a phone like that. They seemed to be trying hard to win iPhone users by being like the iPhone!
Aside from that, I don't remember much about the iPhone specs. But I can say this is one of the greatest devices I've ever owned, and I would never trade it for an iPhone. The vast majority of S3 owners will tell you the same and that they have no regrets on it.
Lastly, this phone is just plain fun from an xda or dev standpoint.
