[Q] What's Up With Google Nav? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Has anyone noticed that with the latest google navigation, the nice phone lady no longer warns you when your turn is coming up? She just blurts out, "Turn left." when you're in the far right lane maybe 20 yards from the intersection. She used to say, "In 200 feet, turn right," then after a bit, "Turn right." Is there a way to get my verbal warning back, or has Google really just made their navigation almost useless?

I noticed that as well. While I don't use navigation that often, it was very noticeable when it was missing. Almost missed my exit.
I thought it was just a glitch, or that I missed it being said. Glad to know it's not just me.

The only thing I can think that makes that make sense is they're assuming everyone is using a mount and keeping the screen on like a real GPS nav unit, so they can see their turn coming up. But that's a bad assumption.

Hmmm, could be. It would be a huge oversight on their part if that is true.
Funny, because I would be using a mount if they made one that fit the phone while in a case. I bought tje docks (both car and desk) and returned them because of this. I'm not going to take my phone out of the case every time I want to use a dock.

Yah. I dont know why they did that

Maybe we should make a fuss in the comments in the play store.

Hadn't noticed this, but that does suck. My gf got me a dock from radio shack that fits the hercules with a case on it

Yeah I noticed that as well but I had already given up google nav for Waze. Waze has much better fluid directions ahead of time - plus it has speedtrap and traffic alerts as it's a social networking navigator app. Way way better.

i use both Google Nav and Copilot. Nav became more convenient so I use it almost daily. However after the update came the "New (soft) lady voice" and I hate her. She speaks to soft and I can't hear her as well. I want the loud booming robotic voice back but don't know where to find it.
That leads into my second issue with Nav. The two ladies seem to start and finish each others directions.
example:
(slv - soft lady voice): now take upcoming left... (LBRV takes over) IN 300 FEET, NOW TAKE LEFT
CONTINUE ALONG GENERIC... (slv) road for 100 feet and arrive at your destination.
Its annoying.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the new voice either.
Has anyone else noticed their instructions getting cut off? Usually when I'm using navigation I'm also listening to music over bluetooth. Since getting ICS it seems like the music doesn't get turned off fast enough, and sometimes gets turned back on too soon, so I can't hear if I was supposed to turn onto Cedar Rd, or Cedar Ave or what.

Okay this is getting weird now... I got a third lady in there. Cheerful & Perky. Where the hell did she come from?
Now I get directions from all three.
I just want the original booming robotic lady voice again.
To top it off on my S3, I only have SLV and C&P.
C&P is a step up from SLV but still not as loud as BRV.
C&P sounds exactly like the voice in this Google Search comparision:

You may have a separate issue altogether. Do you have more than one TTS engine installed? If so, you may want to try getting rid of one or two. Check settings under language and keyboards and see if you can disable all then check one to work.

Thanks but nope, that is not it. I haven't installed voice packs. The only thing I can think of is that happened after a Google Maps Update or after the ICS update. All three ladies will speak during Navigation. I swear I'll have to get video of it somehow.

Clear data/uninstall reinstall? After that, I'm out of ideas. Maybe flash AOKP, since it won't let anyone use any voice other than Google TTS.

Is this par for the course?

So picked this phone up yesterday and so far the major issues i've come across are:
Random touch screen issue - I'll use the phone normally for a while but sometimes when i'm playing a game (NOVA... which i deleted now) or strolling through a menu (happened in olive tree reader and the amazon store) a small area of the screen will spaz out... it's also happened on the stock lock screen and then persisted a few seconds after I rebooted to get rid of the issue. It's annoying because just as soon as I'm ready to chalk it up as a fluke or some random app issue... it shows up again somewhere else. Now.. this isn't during "one handed operation".. the device is in my left hand.. no fingers on the screen... using my right index finger to do the navigating.
Quite a few apps just don't work - all of my gameloft stuff, Age of Zombies, the video creator app (Samsung... your own freeking app?!?), and a handfull of others either crash immediately, don't start, or crash after seemingly opening just fine. Sidenote... so after a night off it's feet Age of Zombies is working this morning.
signal issues - the reception on this phone it utterly attrocious. I'll go from 5 bars (never the full 6) down to 2 without moving... which means it's a grip issue. I've cupped the bottom portion of the phone (around where the capacitive buttons and the back "lip" are) and watch my signal degrade while removing my hands brings that signal right back... also.. i'm ONE ROOM over from my wireless router and the signal hovers around none to 2 bars on the wifi indicator... HOWEVER... now that I'm at work.. i'm on my corporate wifi.. great reception... cell strength? 5 or 6 bars.... what the feezy.
So.. in a nutshell are these issues normal? should I return this for another unit? I absolutely LOVE this phone... as a pda. It's fast, i dig the large screen, i heart android and touchwiz is actually kinda cool so i may not root this thing with all that said it's just been a little unreliable and I need to be sure that this device will work when i need it to.
Thanks for the input guys.
Reception is a known problem that sprint has acknowledged, they say they are working on a fix.
The screen spazzes out when charging, if it is spazzing out at other times your phone is not normal.
Apps crash sometimes when I start then, but restarting the app usually works fine.
All mobile OS's are beta because they are young. In the 90s windows was even more unstable, and became more stable with time.

Ok.. so the only REAL issue i have is the crashing apps... which will hopefully get better over time then?
Your response was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to address my concerns
The screen spazz thing ( if not on stock charger ) is enough to make me go in and exchange it. Mine has none of the probs you have

If you have probs with apps crashing, try a factory restore. Also check when the app was last updated by the dev, it may just be out of date and written for 2.1

It's not likely to be an outdated app, these were all apps I was using (successfully) on my G2x, until I sold it and bought the GS2 the same day.
I'm glad to know these are KNOWN issues that either have reasonable workarounds or are being worked on. I can deal without games, all of my essentials (productivity apps) are working. Thanks people.

oh yeah... also, heading to the local sprint store in a minute to test out this theory.. i do remember that i was charging while playing deathworms when it spazzed on me... the lock screen as well, but whenever i messed with the in store demo units... no problems. I may get an exchange anyway though. Thanks!

Buglist for FD02. It is your chance to make a difference.

Everyone, we need a team project. I need a bug list for FD02. Can you all please list specific problems that you are having with the rom? Please refrain from listing problems with apps unless the app is a stock part of OS(ie caledar, contacts, music app, you get the point).
For example, if you are having issue with bluetooth please be specific on what the issue is, what hardware you are using, and how to recreate the problem.
If you have a problem that cannot be recreated it will be hard to get fixed. Thanks. You really will be helping.
All bugs need to be confirmed by at least two members so if we could help each other by testing bugs thay would be great.
And can we please refrain from immature useless post. Your post will be deleted and there is a chance you might get a nice vacation. There is a thread already set up for rants.

1 Auto Launch apps when you plug the phone into a DOCK. You can't turn it off. It forces you to pick one.
SO ANNOYING.
2 THE MODEM SUCKs. There is SO much work that needs to be done there. All the software development for ICS should be halted until they get the modem squared away.
THEY NEED TO BEEF UP THE VOLTAGE TO THE CORE AND TO THE RADIO. worry about battery life later, just get it to work first. Most of us can't even get a wifi signal standing 10 feet from a router, or a cell signal.
3 CUT and PASTE Can't cut the entire sentence. It seems that the first letter of every sentence is unselectable as you can't move the carrier over far enough to select it. It seems the touch screen does not sense to the entire edge of the screen. I think the touch screen does not sense that far off the screen, so you can't select the first part of any sentence, if it is all the way over to the edge of the screen. Maybe touch screen or resolution? This happend in portrait and landscape modes both.

I have 2 issues.
One is sometimes when I am typing in the browser when I place the curser in the text field it randomly adds a word. Does anyone know what i am talking about or how to recreate it?
The other is my stereo bluetooth Motorola headphones will randomly pause music without me using my phone or pushing any buttons. I was using the treadmill and it just would pause out of no where.
I am not sure if i was using the stock music player or the Play one. Anyone else experience this issue either?
And can you please refrain from dumb useless post. We are actually trying to get something accomplished.

Your Bluetooth issue is not just you kc..... I have had similar issue forever. I dont think it's a phone or even a Samsung issue, I think its an Android issue.
I've been aggrivatingly dealing with that same problem even when I had my original Evo 4G.
What I have been able to narrow it down to is I get the pauses if I get a text, email, voicemessage, anything that causes the system to tweak or chirp. I've had it happen when switching radio/cell towers. Bluetooth, wired head phones, speakerphone, it don't matter.
It will happen during any audio playback, streaming, or stored. I keep hoping they will fix this annoying bug but until they do I just keep hitting play.

I will venture to say that this bluetooth problem is specific to this phone. I never had problems like this with my EVO. All of these problems started to show up with ICS. The were around when I was using GB but it was not as prevalent. The issue that I have is once it connects, it does not want to reconnect unless I power cycle bluetooth.

i mean honestly these issues are in most sammie devices .. sad that modem/radio/gps issues haven't been completely fixed by now .. some scroll touchscreen lag .. those the same issues since the OGEpic ... i went to the photon and radio is great but pentile sucks so i came back to sammi thinking these small annoyances has been taken care of .. boy i was wrong .. maybe the devs should work for samsung just saying!! ..
For anyone having issues with these builds, I highly suggest completely formatting your phone. This includes your internal storage. I kept having many of the issues listed above until i finally cleared every thing off my phone. Now every thing runs flawlessly, including chrome.

Ok.. only issue ive been having is the modem.. cell signal gives full signal out and about and has no issues with calls.. however, it says 3g but when i try to load something it always drops to 1x.. and when it says 3g it runs at 1x speeds or doesnt work at all.. when using roam control it runs way better.. my dl speed hasnt been over .5mbps.. and up speed gets over 1mbps where i have full reception in different parts of town

Only bugs I've noticed are:
Apps sometimes lag when tapping the icon to open.
Bluetooth was flawless for me on stock GB. Works fine on FD02 but my Kensington car kit has minor issues. Mainly, the remote will only control Google Play Music and won't play or pause other apps like PocketCasts or radio apps. It controlled those on GB. Minor but I miss it.
Otherwise, so far so good.

[Q] GPS wandering, any one found a software fix?

I've read just about every post in this forum that even mentions GPS trying to find a solution, but no luck, so I'm asking outright in case I missed something or someone has the answer and hasn't contributed it yet.
My One X has horrible GPS.
I'm not talking about how long it takes to find satellites, it does that quickly enough. What I'm talking about is using an app like My Tracks, Endomondo, Run Keeper, etc to record a track. If I sit the phone perfectly still and let one run, the position and track wander all over the map like a drunken sailor looking for a good time. If I actually move in a straight line, the position shows me blocks away from where I really am. If I try to use a navigation app, the directions are meaningless because the phone thinks I'm as much as 1/2 mile away from my actual position. (I should post a video of that, it's hilarious how bad the directions are.)
Please don't respond if the only problem you've had with GPS is that it took too long to find satellites and downloading someone's aGPS fix app or tweak solved your problem. I've tried all that, multiple times.
I suspect it's just bad hardware, maybe bad antenna connection or something similar, and I'm going to need to replace the phone, but before i go through the hassle of trying to get HTC to replace this dev unlocked phone, I want to make sure there's not a software fix possible. I'm past Expansys' 14 day return window, so HTC is my only option, or possibly my American Express warranty service.
Any thoughts?
The pic is a screen capture of the phone sitting in my parked car in an uncovered parking lot for about 10 minutes. Note how much it wanders around.
Well, no replies, so I guess that means a big NO to any one actually finding a software fix to this particular problem.
For what it's worth, I installed CM9 in the phone and the GPS is still unable to hold an accurate location, so I'm sure it's a hardware issue at this point.
That's a real pisser, since they told me the turn around time on fixing my phone will be 3-4 weeks at the HTC Warranty Repair center in Houston, TX.

I hate to say it, but it must be your unit.
I use GPS navigation very frequently (SoCal, USA) - and coming from a flawless GPS on SGSII, I have to say that HOX GPS is even better. It's more precise - it can even correctly show which side of the road I'm on. Also, driving past intersections is spot-on, which shows how on-the-spot it is.
Did you install any cases, or keep it somewhere where antenna signal may get blocked?

I didn't want to believe it, but I concur it's got to be a hardware issue. No case in it, nothing blocking the antenna. I have same issues even laying it on a patio table out in the open.
I'm also in SoCal...San Fernando valley and the west side of Los Angeles. The one time I tried to use the GPS for navigation it was like getting affections from the three stooges.

Mine does exactly the same. Calibrating the compass an turning wifi off while using gps solves it for me. Gsp is spot on whe wifi turned off... turn it on while navigating and it wonders off road....
I had the same problem, I downloaded GPS Test Plus from the Market, went into settings, selected Clear AGPS and then selected Update AGPS - seems to have been tons better since I did that.
Found this via an Internet search so Kudos to those who discovered it although I apologise I can't remember where I found it!

Yop this I remember even from the iPhone. Accuracy +50m when Wifi or Mobile network assisting with the position. Without max 5 . and not much wandering
Just turn it off in the location. As the breugiek above me suggested.
Thanks for the responses.
As stated in the original post, this is not an aGPS issue. I've tried many aGPS type fixes..Faster fix app, crypted fix and a few others.
I didn't mention it, but I've already tried turning of wifi; it makes no difference.
I suspect bad hardware, specifically something wrong with the antenna.
Annoys me no end to be HOX-less for a month. I've only owned the damn thing for 4 weeks.

GPS now working fairly well on this phone. It's not perfect, and requires WiFi off, but other than some initial wandering at startup I'm getting accurate tracks on it.
The fix was to install ARHD 7.0. No idea what changed from earlier versions but it works well enough to put up with until I can get a shorter repair time quote from the warranty center.

Have To Return Phone (Not Anymore)

So after having the Galaxy 3 for a few days I'm very sad to have to return it (have to call Sprint tomorrow) I rely on my phone while rode bicycling using Map my ride to provide me with mileage, time, distance and various other info and I also play music through the stock music player. I use Ivona Voice to announce my tts info through Map My Ride so technically there are 3 apps running simultaneously. Basically what happens is Map My Ride uses Ivona voice to chime in above my music to let me know information after every mile (that's how I have it set).
Well I'm not sure what the issue is but I've went on 2 bike rides and on both my music stopped playing and Map My Ride would also not verbally announce my information after a few songs/miles. After my first ride I wasn't getting any sound through either the external or earpiece speaker. Finally I tried to make a phone call and after that both the earpiece and external speaker started working.
But I also found another glitch after my second time out on my bike using this phone. The gps seems to have issues. At the end of my ride I went to pick up my phone and found out that I lost all of my riding information because Map My Ride stops recording if the gps signal is lost.
Here's the interesting thing. I've never had any of these issues on my previous Evo 3d including loosing GPS signal during my normal bike route. This is NOT to say that HTC is better or Samsung sucks or anything like that. I'm just frustrated that the Galaxy can't seem to handle running Music and a GPS app simultaneously.
Oh and I've noticed that my wifi doesn't always turn on on the first try. I have to turn it on, then off, then on again sometimes to enable it.
Anyone else have any of these issues?
I'm haven't bothered rooting yet and have have everything up to date so I'm guessing either I have a faulty device or there are still a lot of bugs to be worked out. Either way it sucks because this phone is awesome and I hate to revert back to my older technology. :crying:
EDIT: I have worked out my issues and keeping this beast.

Id try a modem update or prl update i have yey to lose gps
Thanks. I actually figured out the problem with my music stopping. Evidently Ivona Voice text to speech is causing some sort of glitch causing my music to stop after it announces my info through Map My Ride. When I use Samsung factory text to speech program my music pauses while my info is being read then starts back up as it is supposed to.
I am going to try gps again and see of that is worked out now. Love the phone just not the bugs

Why is that?
Well if you were asking about the lag is on the home key, that's partly due to the samsung overlay, the hesitation is it waiting to see if you're trying to access S-Voice instead of heading home. Not sure about the back button though
there is a longer thread somewhere around here about that, maybe the tips and tricks one?
I just keep my capacitive lighting always on.....the only problem i have is the 3g data speed. Every now n then ill get fast speedz and then i get really slow speeds. Guess its the location im at dunno.......when i got the gs3 the data speeds were really slow so i immediately got msl code n did the data hack and that seems to work a lil

Yeah I was referring to back button. I think it depends on how big of an app you're trying to close lately. I'm all problem just anal and impatient lol. I

That's not a bad idea at all. I think that's why I have to press them multiple times sometimes, but because I can't always see them so I miss them.
Edit: I just extended the light time on the capacitive buttons and that seems to do the trick. I never knew you could change light time on them. Thanks for the tip.

'Hey Google' vibrate prompt instead of beep.

So I just recently flashed a build of DU to my phone and when I say 'Hey Google' the phone vibrates to prompt me that the command was understood and it is ready to listen. On stock it always would beep instead of vibrating when I did this. I prefer the beep cause if I am not near my phone I know it is ready for a command. Is there anyway to change this? I've looked through all the settings I can think of and can't seem to find anything to change it. I'm probably just overlooking it. Thanks in advance!
If you turn on any accessibility option in setting you will get it back. Sadly this is the direction google has gone with assistant. There are huge threads on this since you can't tell if the phone is ready if you don't look at it (like in your car). Many people are irritated by this and google has pretty much told us all to take a jump.
