Is it worth it upgrading from my S2 to the S3? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Don't get me wrong, I love my S2, but I'm also loving the new S4 processor, screen (HD Display), bigger screen, 2G of RAM, better 8MP camera and the new TouchWiz changes on the S3. I just wanted to get a few opinions on if it is really worth upgrading to the S3 or just holding out for something better? I would have went with the HTC One S, but the no sd card slot killed that decision for me. Thanks for any advice/input guys.

Yes its worth it imoTheoretically twice the performance and super amoled+ 720p screen alone are enough to warrant an upgrade over this phone. Remember we got the runt s2. This phone is sweet but in no way is a power house. Even the exynos powered s2 feel ages ahead of this chipset.

Do you know if the AT&T and Sprint versions of the S3 will be getting the same version of the T-Mobile S3? Like the S4 Qualcomm processor...Instead of last time where Sprint and AT&T got the Exynos processor instead of the S3 Qualcomm chip on the S2?

I would wait for Google io and decide from there. Tbh, the smarter thing to do is wait until fall.
It's not that big of a leap to warrant paying and renewing your contact imo.
As far as i know all US carriers have the same hardware except for radios.
-dark

I think the the S3 is a solid generational leap from the S2. I'm still disappointed that they didn't go whole hog ICS, keeping physical keys and a menu button, but hardware wise, it's a hell of a phone. Put CM9 on it and wow.
And yes, the chipset, specs, and design are all the same on all US models.

Well that's the one big turn off for me on the S3 is the big physical button at the bottom

Ironically I've been disappointed in all US SGS releases thus far b/c it hasn't had the physical button. I think it add character to the phone and will offer some uniqueness as opposed to all softkeys. But, different strokes.
I am going to be picking up the TMO version this coming Friday (roman is too). We are planning on doing a stock smali hacked rom (like Juggernaut) AND of course putting AOKP on it. Gonna be fun. ^^

As if there weren't already enough reasons to get the S3
I like my Roms the way I like my women..... Clean and smooth

I personally like how the gs3 looks. Dunno if that melting issue affects all gs3s but that's something else to look out for. That drop test video shows it being more fragile than the gs2.
In waiting to see what the new nexus has to offer.

Well I've made my decision, and I'm picking up my S3 on Wednesday morning (6/27) as soon as my local T-Mobile store opens. It's just too much of a beast of a phone to turn down. I'll be sure to post back on my opinion of the device. Thanks guys.

I spoke with a sales rep today and they told me its gonna be 350 after mail in rebate. Ill not pay that much with a 2 year contract... just seems insane. Ever other phone out there is 200+/- 50

Personally I am just going to wait until the new nexus (or nexi?) Come out. Remember rumors have it that we will have up to five different versions this year to choose from. I think it will be worth it to wait a few months.

I personally don't think is worth upgrading
First of all Im not going to pay an insane price just to upgrade. my current phone cost me enough. Also the phone has some nice feature however I believe its better to wait for the next Google phone since there always more development.
Plus we already have CM9,MUIU,AOKP and AOSP. I think I can wait a little longer

I will be paying a 229.99 down payment for the 16GB version and then 20 bucks a month after that, only because I'm on a value plan. The 32GB version is a down payment of 279.99 and 20 bucks a month after that. If your a new customer or on a standard plan (and have an upgrade available) then it will be 279.99 for the 16GB and 329.99 for the 32GB.

I think that's to much money for a phone. The max I will ever pay for any phone is $200

Well sometimes for the latest and greatest technology I think its always going to be a little extra money. Especially when its brand new. Plus its not like I'm paying out of pocket for most of it, I sold my GS2 for $400 to be able to get the GS3...I think its well worth the upgrade.

Offered a 4 day old Nexus for £300

As the thread states my friend just got a Nexus on contract and is using it to pay off his O2 contract as he already has a sim free iPhone 4S.
I can sell my GS2 for around £200-230 so just need to pay the difference to get it up to £300
Played around with it a tiny bit and it looks ok but not really sold on it however I do love the pure google experience (previous nexus one owner)
Good deal or not?
Yeah! Honestly, I got this phone yesterday and you will NOT be disappointed. The screen, the smoothness of ICS, it's just a freaking monster man. And You're only going to be paying around £70-£100 for the phone so you can't go wrong!
Edit: Just read you already own a GS2. I would not be so sure then, it depends on how desperate you are to get ICS, because once that hits the GS2 the only thing that will be to the Nexus' advantage is the screen and dev support, which is more than enough for me to go for the Nexus lol.
Decisions decisions....
Get it! and sell it me small profit for yourself
It's really a beast! Some of my favorite things are the screen, led, and the software buttons they are geinus!
Honestly, if I were you, I would wait until next year Q2 2012 when it is rumoured that quad core phones that are coming out. I'm pretty sure there are already ICS roms for the Galaxy S2 and you're getting it next year anyway from Samsung. However, I haven't had any experience with the Nexus so I can only tell you from what I think, I haven't actually compared the fluidity and smoothness of both phones.
keep your gs2 and wait.for.ice.

Gotta agree. There are a few users here that I see post the same useless drivel. Makes ya wonder.
Anyway, like I said before, go for it. You won't be disappointed.
Side note: The touch screen buttons have just made other Android devices look antiquated.
I am pretty sure I will if my friend doesn't decide to keep it.
£300 is not a great deal considering a brand new one sells for around £428.79. If you do not like it, you should be able to sell it for more than £300.

nice signature. lol.
It kind of depends. Since you already have a GS2 it's not really an upgrade but a lateral move from one phone to the next. The GN2 will definitely outlive the GS2 as far as official updates and dev support is concerned, but the GS2 already has plenty dev support right now and will likely have it for as long as you own/use the phone. The screen on the GN is way better, the processor is just as good, the GPU and camera on the GS2 are the only real advantages so it pretty much evens out in my book. It really is going to come down to personal preference. The reason I jumped to the nexus line was because I was a Vibrant owner and never saw a froyo update on my phone while Samsung promised and promised. The dev community and custom gone were the only things keeping me happy with my phone. About a week after the Nexus S was released I walked into a Best Buy and put my phone running a custom froyo rom with an overclocked processor up against a bone stock display model and the display model Nexus won every battle. I bought the phone a few days later and haven't looked back since. Now there are a few caveats to the story, one being that I had a variant of the GS and that Samsung had indeed finished the froyo update about two months before the release of the Nexus S (just not for the American variants) but at the end of the day, the Nexus S is going to receive an official update of ICS and the GS isn't despite them having nearly all the same hardware components. The devs are still there and they will give the phone a proper update but it would be easier with an official kernel to play with. Just my thoughts. Personally I'd go with the GN unless you plan on playing multiple high end games that require you to have a better GPU.

The stock google experience is swaying it for me right now and it looks like I will have to pay a minimum of £80 to £100 + selling my GS2.
Will see my mate on Thursday and take it from there and will let everyone know if I suddenly become a GN owner
My wife said no I cannot trade so I said it's an christmas present to myself so may have to sweeten her up a bit haha

Actually its a very very good deal. Its 429 + vat which is more like £520. Also considering its from his friend and not some random stranger he can be pretty sure there's not some weird fault with it or something dodgy. Its pretty close to having a brand new phone with £220 off
Personally for around £100 I would probably upgrade. I agree with other posts its more of a lateral move, but the SGS2 is soooo common now, especially in the UK, and its coming up to a year old soon. The Galaxy Nexus will stay 'new' for a while. Also remember the GN resolution is the native resolution for ICS and what it was designed for. Although other phones with lower resolutions will also get ICS i'm sure there'll be some compromises somewhere.
Anyway its all opinion, but for me i'm slightly for the GN. BTW I upgraded from a N1 to a Galaxy Nexus, and my only experience of a SGS2 is 5 minutes with my friends one at the pub.
Interesting as o2 would let me pay off my remaining 2 months of my contract so i could get the galaxy nexus earlier.
They told me they do not allow this anymore and for that they have lost a customer, they never even tried to do me a deal.
I pay £41 a month for unlimited everything on my new contract which would mean i will pay £984 over the 24 month contract.
Hes going to be well out of pocket once he pays off his contract is o2 let him.
Text my mate to say I am going for the GN so now it's just down to when I go and get some cash for my phone and when I get to see him next.
Good timing as well as he was considering selling it tomorrow!
I bought a galaxy nexus and returned to my s2...
Only the screen is better on this phone and the new os, everything else isnt worth spendig money on it...

It's costing my friend around £200 to pay off O2 and he managed to get the GN for FREE on 12 months at vodafone so he will actually make around £100 from this and will also be on a 12 month agreement not 18-24 months.
On o2 he pays £37-38 a month and Vodafone will be £41 a month so makes sense really for him to sell it and for me to buy it lol

Is it still worth it to buy?

Well I know this is gonna mostly be my first and last thread, sorry. But anyways onwards to the question is, is it still worth it to buy one? I've found that my local Koodo's Mobile (Canadian phone provider) is selling the Samsung Galaxy S2 X for $300 dollars off contract brand new. Which it is identical to the T-Mobile variant. I do realize that the phone itself is about a year old, and was again wondering is it still worth it to buy one, or wait until the next nexus phone or flagship phone instead?
My intent for the purchase would be honestly to get a gift for my mom, since she still on an old phone. She isn't too tech savvy, so she'll be using mostly Facebook, Skype, Youtube, Netflix on WiFi, being that the phone is so large, the pricing and all. If not would an iPhone be easier for her to use because of iOS?
TL;DR - $300 Samsung Galaxy S2X/T-Mobile Samsung S2, should I buy or not, or buy something simple like an iPhone for her to use?

I think I might just get it, and if she doesn't like it I'll keep it for myself. Since her contract is about to end soon, so I'll just pay for an upgrade to whatever phone. I have been eyeing AOKP on my Nook Color, that I got in the states, but haven't full commitment and stayed with CM 7.2.
I have another question which is about the phone itself, which I know I shouldn't post, but. What is the recommend kernel and rom if I should even consider rooting it, which I do plan to if I purchase it. If its compatible with Sixaxis Controller, is it strong enough to emulate say something like a PS1 or a N64, is the toolkit the easiest way to root and last question I swear, does do I have to purchase a certain type of adapter for MHL or is it a universal thing?
EDIT: Because I plan to make it somewhat of a gaming hub where I can emulate my favorite classic games, and use it like a HTPC since XBMC is being released I believe.
Aokp is fine running psx, haven't tried n64. Haven't tried sixaxis either. Actually any of the popular roms are fine.... This phone is pretty beastly. If anything you can stick to the provided kernel that flashes with the ROM or tdj maybe eugene? I'm not sure if he has updated his lately. Btw you should really flash a custom ROM if you give it to your mom because stock ics trend to be buggy.

As much as I cannot stand an iPhone, Apples BS,etc. The iPhone is definitely user friendly for basic functions. Apps that we have are free but an IPhone user isn't typically wanting to tether, NFC, or anything else we have as a feature.
I encourage you to buy one used. Maybe that way, you could not give direct profit to the already rediculous "patent thief".

As does T-Mobile. And about previous comment of iPhone being user friendly, android is even more user friendly. Yes d you're but going to hack the **** out of it then I recommend touch wiz miui.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I've notice the Chinese made MIUI,is similar to the iOS in someways. I think I'll buy the phone brand new for the sake of it, let her test it out replacing her regular phone for a few days, and if she likes the hardware and how the touchscreen works I'll install MIUI for her. If not, no point returning and I might as well keep it, install a rom which I like, and replace my Blackberry. Again like I said her contract is about 6 months away, they'll call her saying "3 Year Contract blah blah blah", which then I'll do the honors of paying for the upgrade myself.
And I do say, the price bought outright blows the iPhone out of the waters.
That's an amazing price for a brand new hercules.. Not to mention it's still one of the best phones you can get.

Just get her the SGS2 and be done with it, way better phone
Get her something easy to use. I got my father a pantech crossover and he just couldn't get it. He was so good with his blackberry so I figured it would be easy. Wrong.
If you do get her an s2 make sure you set it up for her.
If your choices are the S2X and the iPhone, I would take the S2X. You're not gonna find a new iPhone for $300, and iPhones don't have expandable storage. If you want easy navigation try flashing MIUI like mentioned, or maybe JoyOS which is basically an IOS clone.
As long as it isn't rooted with all that mumbo jumbo crud, galaxy s phones are total parent friendly! I jumped my mom into the Android game with a galaxy s 4g and she loves it. Hell, every time I show up with my phone she always gets impressed by it.
300$ is a total steal for what you're getting and you should totally do it!

Just got it on contract with TMobile. I looked at the s3, and couldn't really justify paying $130 more for the s3 than the s2. They are both dual core 1.5 ghz phones with 8mp cameras that take full hd video. Whatever else it has just wasn't worth the extra $. Lots of other people will do the same math.

S3 now or waiting for S4?

I am up for a new phone with my provider.
So I am wondering should I get the S3 now or should I wait for the next phone from Samsung.
I read abotu rumors that the S4 might be pulled up to go on sale with the iPhone 5.
Though based on track recrod I doubt to see a S3 successor prior to July 2013 (if not later).
Currently I have a Samsung Infuse (AT&T) and I am quite happy with it.
What are your thoughts?
No way will an S4 be released along side the iPhone 5. It's still a ways off I'm sure. Just get the S3, you won't regret it.

You should always upgrade ASAP when on a subsidized carrier like AT&T. Every month you delay is money down the drain because your current phone is "paid off", yet they don't reduce your monthly bill to reflect that.
Upgrade to the S3, and either sell your old one on ebay, or keep it as a backup.
Had the S2 and kicked the idea around for a bit. Man I'm so glad I went and bought the S3 out right. Sold the S2 on amazon and haven't regretted it once. If the S4 somehow resurrects the lord Jesus Christ back onto earth I'll snag it as well. I'm not really sure what the game plan for Samsung is next year.

Exactly, I had a skyrocket which is not much different from the S3. But I upgraded to the S3 and man what a difference it is in terms of software. Lots of great new things that I couldnt get even with the S3 roms on the skyrocket. Really good decision for me. And just like the other user said, you should get the S3 since your bill doesnt reduce. The S3 had all the features that I wanted in the skyrocket. HD screen and LED notification light. But I just had to get the skyrocket I couldnt stand my iphone anymore.
If you wait for the next greatest and latest thing you'll always end up waiting. When the s4 comes out you can always sell your s3 for some descent change and come within $300 of buying the s4 with no contract more than likely.

Not exactly true, if you are the first line on the account, your upgrades come earlier. For example, I am the first line in our account and get a yearly upgrade because of it. I get the 2-year price for a 1-year contract.
The phone is a great one. Top of the line specs, great size, and thinness make it so much better to hold. My only problem with the phone is the heating and that stupid home button.
Once you get past that though, it's really great!

Xda members are so savvy! I love all the talk about selling your old phone and paying the difference for the new one. It usually works out to paying less than the $199 new contract price. And when you're actually up for renewal, you actually make money selling the old phone since you dont have to pay full price and the new one is only $199! I've been doing this for years. I never keep a phone too long because its not worth much later. So definitely get the s3, then if you want the iPhone 5 or note 2 or whatever, sell the s3 and buy your next gadget. Waiting two years is for suckers!!!

I'm sooo sick of these kind of posts. The phone has barley a couple months old and people are already asking if I should wait for the next model. Who knows maybe the S4 will have 8 cores and be the best phone ever, but in the end it's your choice what phone you buy.

if you are sick then go to doctor. Don't come here and spread your sickness with your ****ty comments.
@OP: I understand your dilemma, but I think we don't even have any news/leaks about S4..so you should just get S3. As many people said "you won't regret it"
The only dilemma I see is the new snapdragon s4 pro quad with adreno 320 probably hitting in a few months. Either way I'm loving my s3.

A year old phone can't be my best option, can it?

Howdy! Thunderturd user here with a January upgrade, looking for advice.
I've come to the conclusion that Verizon's ROM update system is crippling. My formerly flagship phone is running Twisted's cobbled together ICS ROM a year after its official release. This makes me want to take hostages.
It seems the only solution is to get my junk straight from the source. So I want a Nexus, but I've got a few problems with the new one.
1. Battery. I need a removable one.
2. SD card. I've got 20+ gigs of music on my current craptacular device.
3. I have to come out of pocket for the full amount of the phone. I want Verizon to take a hit on this. If I'm paying the full monthly price, I want them to bleed on the hardware.
So talk to me about your phone. I'm thinking about rocking a Galaxy Nexus until Google puts out something more practical than the 4 and selling my upgrade on ebay.
Any flaws in my thinking?

The gnex is an absolutely fantastic phone. Removable battery, extended oem batteries available (with NFC capability), 32gb on the VZW version, google play music cloud storage, excellent developer support, good accessories, nice screen, quality camera and skimmed down, speeded up android. I'm rocking a 16gb gsm gnex straight from the play store and I absolutely adore it. Bought it 1 month before the Nexus 4 dropped and I have no regrets. LG has been terrible to me and I personally think in terms of overall usability, the gnex trumps the 4.
The gnex, like I said, has excellent developer support and have been experimented with for over a year. We have this device figured out here in these forums and it can do everything you want it to do.
I say pull the trigger with a gnex. Granted it doesn't have the sd card slot, but there are ways around that.
Good luck
If the SD card is a must you shouldn't even be here. Go with the S3 or Note 2.
I'm looking at the prices on the VZW website and I think you should go with Amazon if you want to spend less on an upgrade. VZW is gouging the hell out of you. 50 bucks on contract for a pre-owned Gnex? 100 bucks for a new one? Gimme a break. I can find one for 200 bucks now and 250 in great condition.

gnex is a great choice.. i guess the main issue for you would be no sdcard but verizon has a 32gb version that you could get
Sprint also comes with 32GB version & ext. battery available for just the cost of shipping (see amazon wireless for good deal now)!

i find this requirement insanely funny.
verizon doesnt take a hit on the hardware cost. its factored into their plan prices. if you think them discounting the phone alot hurts them, you are delusional
A Nexus phone is always worth it IMO.

Honestly I would go with one thats for sale used on swappa.com . There is one *cough* *cough* in Mint condition for $235 thats the 32GB and it is a refurb VZW sent, so it is the same as if you bought it straight from VZW right now except with 32GB memory.
I too had a TurdBolt and I couldnt stand it. The Galaxy Nexus is a spectacular device for whats around today. If your buying off contract right now I would stay away from a S3 or NoteII unless you have $600 to throw away.
In the lines of 2nd poster:
Gnex big storage capability = OTG
And for us, early adopters, it has been a landmark device; it will keep serving us well, OS-wise, for at least 2 more major versions.

Get the GNex. It's a great device even if stuck on Verizon's reliable yet ever so slow update network. I'll be jumping ship when my contract expires in another year, but for now it's a great device and will be for the foreseeable future.

Thats what im doing right now. Im switching to the GSM for cost primarily. Honestly the slow updates arent an issue because the device has an amazing developer support.
Thanks guys, you sold me.
So should I use my upgrade on an S3 (or other) and sell it, or save the upgrade? Is Verizon going to be offering a Nexus device in the future?

Yeah?
How about this time next year?
It's not the hardware I have an issue with, it's the crushing ineptitude of the upgrade system. My TB was the S3 in early 2011 and have been waiting for ICS for a year. 12 fvcking months.

Idk if you'll find a phone that's guaranteed upgrades on big red. Even the nexus was bsed with. The s3 and note 2 are pretty good in that area. At least samsung sends the update. I don't think the rezound will end up with JB.

i just threw my iphone 4 for this phone 2 days ago, and im happy about it

Should I upgrade?

s4 looks nice, but out of my budget. Nexus 4 was definitely about to win, until I found out it had no expandable memory. Such a serious shame, as it looks beautiful. What I'm left with is either stick with S2 or swap for S3?
I JUST switched to TMO a few weeks ago because I was in dire needs of a phone as my EVO 4g crapped out on me and I was tired with sprint. So now that I'm in a slightly better financial situation, I'm curious to ask if you guys had the option to swap out your s2 for the s3 right now without incurring any other charges besides paying the difference on the down payment, would you do it?
Thing is, you get the phones financed with 0 interest on tmobile now, why not just get a gs4. Give a bigger down payment and so the payments are a bit smaller, then if you got the money down the road, just give more money towards the phone. So its not too out of reach i would think, is what in doing with my new phone.

Then what i would personally do is maybe save, i mean the gs4 is not an extremely huge leap from the gs3, and look almost the same physically, but you know, it is still better. That's what i am doing. Saving to give a at least 50% of total value down payment on my next phone (350 or so, and still deciding between gs4 or HTC one) so monthly payments are less. Besides you still have time to save the buckaroos, neither phone is yet available on T-Mobile

I personally would go for the GS4 and save money up for it. The new screen will be more battery efficient and much more awesome, + it will probably get one more update than the GS3. For example I read a leaked Samsung update road map which basically said the S2 will stay with 4.2.2 but the S3 will get Key Lime Pie
I understand Key Lime Pie hasn't even been out yet and this is pure speculation, however the newer phones will almost get more support, especially with the S3 selling so well and being such a high profile success. Does this make sense?
If you extend my "logic" to the S3 and S4, probably the S3 will get two updates, like the S2, and if the S4 gets two updates as well it will be one version ahead of the S3.
New software always extends the life of a phone until the next hardware upgrade.
