Does this device have video call over 3G network (not over 3G data, using gtalk, skype, etc.) or this funcionality is still not present in Galaxy Nexus / ICS?
Don't all phones need 3G (or 4G/WiFi) data to make video calls?

Video call = 3G network, not using your 3G data plan.
Skype etc = 3G data.
Which phones allow you to do that?

I thought pretty much every 3G phone has been able to do this since 2004? At least in the UK...?
If you're talking Android, then Samsung phones can.
Also tonnes of other non-Android 3G phones, the technology has been around for around 10 years in the UK now, vaguely remember the huge brick video phones that were first on the 3 network.
Must be a UK / European thing then... I don't think I've heard of that before.. every time I've done a video call its been with either Skype or FaceTime or some other service like that. Never done it over the carrier voice network.. always over 3G Data or WiFi
My Samsung Galaxy S can do these video calls over 3G network, but Nexus S can not. So I was wondering if this could be a new functionality in GN or ICS...
I could do native video call on my HTC Touch Diamond 5 years ago.. or was it 4 years..? Anyway when it came out. And the techniqe has been around alot longer in Sweden..

It's not possible on Verizon, since CDMA2000 EV-DO is data only. It might be possible on AT&T, but I think I read somewhere that AT&T limits its UMTS network for data only, and uses 2G for voice.

I think it is mainly a European concept as when I bought my HTC Kaiser (TyTN II) 4 years ago it had video calling facility via the front facing camera but the American version of the same phone did not have the front facing camera.
Basically its the same as making a voice call but you would select video call from the menu instead. As long as both phones had front facing cameras and supported video calling then you could have a video conversation over the carriers network without using data but the video calls were not part of the inclusive minutes bundle and were ALOT more expensive (around 50p - 75p a minute depending on carrier). Same thing goes for the phone before that (HTC Hermes) but I never once used either phone to make a video call lol.
With the advent of Skype and Google Talk there is really no need for carrier video calls anymore, I have never seen any per minute pricing for video calls in the carriers books for years and think its pretty much dead.
Hope that explains what the OP was asking about.

I had the Touch Pro and Diamond 2 (HTC Pure) on US AT&T way back then... and it included Video Calling over cellular. Of course I never used it because no one ever had it back then.
Even today I don't know anyone to video chat with except my gf's netbook over skype.

the Euro version of i9000 and i9000M allowed that
came with build in "face time" per say to allow video chat
my SGS2 phone dialer did not include video chat, seems like they removed the feature
so it's unclear if it's going to be supported by stock ICS
Any update on 3G video call capability?
As the Galaxy Nexus is already on the market in the United Kingdom for a few weeks, and now even in Germany, I wonder, are there any updates on the capabilities of the 3G video call capabilities of the European devices? (That a US-Verizon-Galaxy-Nexus will not have 3G video calls is obvious.)
I know that the Samsung Galaxy S2 in Europe definitely supports native video calls via 3G. But does Galaxy Nexus as well?
I appreciate any helpful response.
Thank you,

video calls
Video calls with no internet connection has been in australia for years now also. In regards to the topic question.
It would seem the galaxy nexus comes with no native video dialing free of an internet connection and no app's appear to be available for this option either. I find it to be a big disapointment when it comes to delivering options we have got used to being standard features on mobile phones today. Further more whilst the device seems to run quickly and relativly bug free it is a phone with substandard basic graphics for most of it's menus and general features. I use fring to make video calls and it seems to work fine however it does rely on an internet conection and a fring account $$$ if you wish to make video calls to people who don't have fring installed.

Video calls or a cellular network have pretty much been phased out now due to the advent of internet calling such as skype/google talk/fring/etc/etc. I remember when I had my HTC Tytn2 about 4 years ago it had video calling over cellular network but even if you could find someone else with a similar functioned phone then it was over 5 times the price per minute than an audio call and I never used it once in the 2 years I had the phone. I dont think america have ever had that function in a phone as I dont think their networks ever supported it and no british network that I know of (maybe 3 network) has video calls listed in their charges. Cant comment about Australia but its a pretty dead technology now and I cant see it making a return in England at least.

Rogers here in Canada had that but they gouged the FK out of it. So it never caught on. I know it's very popular in Hong Kong from what I've seen in the movies
Its been available for years. I remember it was in my Nokia 6680 (2005).
However this feature has to be supported by the carrier. Being on a 3G network doesn't necessarily mean you can make video calls. I remember trying that on my 6680 in 2005 and on my Vibrant (ported I9000 ROM) and of course got an error.

AFAIK, none of the US carriers ever bothered to support UMTS video calls, not even the old AT&T. Cingular had a video messaging service on a few phones, but it just used data. It was pretty much MMS with a larger maximum message size and a proprietary application on the phone. Their UMTS network was teensy at the time, so it made more sense to do something that could work with EDGE and GPRS.
From a US-centric perspective, it doesn't make much sense to spend engineering effort on the feature.
Anyone else noticing very poor quality phone calls? Where I am now I have 3 bars and -85 line strength which is quite good. My wife just called from her mobile and I couldn't hear her as it was really poor reception. She said she had full signal on her iPhone. Anyway, she called me back from a land line and it was exactly the same quality so it is clearly my phone. When i think about it, this has happened quite a lot recently since the new volume fix patch.
Coming from a iPhone my self I am surprised at how poor quality this phone is. Had it 2 months or so now so can't sent back but u am very disappointed.

I highly suggest using the new bootloader that ends in I believe KL01. This is NOT a radio but has resolved all of my reception issues.
I'm 100% stock and don't want to root or anything so can't do much except wait! Its getting worse to be honest, I think I am going to return it back to o2.

I can not confirm that. I am running a GSM Galaxy Nexus with stock ROM (still on 4.0.1). No issues, even in weak areas.
2G vs 3G issue?
I noticed some issues on 2G, but no issues on 3G.
Generally my i4S has considerably better in-call voice quality. I did various tests by swapping the same SIM card from i4S to SGN and vice versa, standing at the same place, and calling my voice mail listening to the same recording on both.
Voice quality is better on i4S when both phones are on 2G, but almost the same on 3G, except the i4S is a little bit louder (ear speaker).
Not a deal breaker for me though, it's just worse.
I have just spoken to o2 and its going back tomorrow. I have done a factory reset and it made no difference!

First time I hear this. I doubt it happens anywhere in EU, regulation fines would kill a carrier doing that. Certainly not in my country (Poland), iPhones here (and smartphones in general) are not really popular yet.

Not sure which provider you talking about but I am on verizon.
Today I went to my datacenter and I never ever have been able to make a good quality call on my old fascinate. Usually I am lucky if the call even goes through and when it does it drops pretty fast.
I decided for kicks to pull out the nexus and was able to make a 7 minute call, and quality was great. In fact in datacenters very hard to hear sometimes because of all the fans. This really blew me away. One of my biggest worries about picking up another samsung was horrible reception.
I did not test data, and totally forgot but I guess next time I go I will.

How did you do that, if the SIM cards have different sizes?
I use the GSM GN. Can Verizon iPhones and GNs use the same SIM cards?
Well I have got my brand new phone today. Just spent 2 hours setting it all up again, made a phone call and it's exactly the same! It installed a update as soon as it logged on, just the hot fix that came out ages ago though. o2 will let me swap my phone for something else. What should I get? A small plastic adapter that "converts" micro-sim card to a full sized sim card. Basically only plastic is missing, the chip has the same size on both micro-sized and normal SIM cards.
If I was to attempt to flash my phone to a newer version, what would be the best to flash it to? I am not very tech, never done it before, just looked on the forums and got very confused, there are loads, how do you know which from does what, its very complicated! I'm pretty pissed off its come to this, this is my first venture into android and probably will be my last! The phone is great as a mini PC but its a phone and it doesn't work as a phone!

Just wondering if any of you Verizon nexus owners have any issues with call quality. Not referring to signal strength but more of voice quality. When I talk to someone their voice sounds a little scratchy or sounds like the speaker is blown. Is this normal? Just wondering if I should get a replacement. Thanks !

The call quality is horrible. Besides low volume, the voice calls are always breaking up. Sometimes I can't hear caller and sometimes they can't hear me. It is on every call, whether it's 1 bar of signal strength or 4 bars. It is the worst phone I have ever had as far as call quality. I don't know if it is a Verizon issue or a Samsung radio issue. But my next phone will not be a Samsung or Verizon (even though I hate to lose unlimited data).
I love ICS but I am tempted to go back to iphone and AT&T (but my wife has an iphone and ios looks so old now). I left a couple of years ago, but this Nexus phone has pissed me off so much. Or I may wait until next decent Android phone and wait until it's out a few months to get reviews first.

Hmmm kinda wish I would have seen this sooner. Since no one responded I figured I was the only one with this problem and called verizon for a replacement. I think this likely varies device to device. I have horrible signal reception on mine (50 feet from a tower, I was at -75dBm), but the voice quality of calls is perfect via handset, speakerphone, and bluetooth.

Smaller numbers, which are actually higher since they're negative, are better reception. However, -75dBm at 50 feet from a tower is fairly poor. In my home, I'm usually at -100dBm (-93dBm at best) and at work, which has been notoriously bad for me, I usually stare at -120dBm with consistant signal drops.
Edit: My numbers are 3G CDMA RSSI based. 4G on radio FC05 uses RSRP, which shows a lower signal number for the same signal quality (here's a good explanation). I don't really use 4G unless I need the speed, though in a lot of areas I get better 4G signal than 3G. I've tested all of the modems and noted no difference between EK01, EK05, EK06, FA02, or FC04. On the 4G side, I noted no difference between EK02, EK04, or FC05, but had noted slow handoffs and data drops with the 4G FA02 modem.
Edit2: My device is using an 09 hardware revision (listed under baseband as i515.09). Some have stated that the 10 revision (i515.10) has inherent problems, whether due to poor hardware or poor construction (if true at all... I have no way to know).
I have good call quality on my Verizon GNex. Sound is crisp and clear. It's much better than the call quality I had on my ATT Captivate.
I always have Awesome calls.

Long story short, I called verizon and they are sending me another replacement. Worst part is I used up my final screen protector on this recent phone. Hey guys,
So as many of us know, 3/4g is not available on SIM 2. However I'm not sure if its a hardware or software restriction. Often, these are disabled via software due to compliance of wireless licensing. Is our SIM 2 hardware or software handicapped for SIM 2? If it is software disabled, can't we enable it unofficially through software just like 4G LTE on the Nexus 4?
The phone has 2 modems, one for each SIM card. For SIM 2 the modem only supports 2G networks with GPRS data, although or phones are limited to voice only for SIM 2.

It's a Hardware limitation
Is it possible to get incoming calls from either SIM card or do we need to enable only one SIM at a time ?
Same question for the ZD551KL (Selfie), I read something like standby dual sim but I don't know if I misunderstood ... Not having the ability to get phone calls from either cards at the same time would loose all the pros for having dual sim ...
You can have two calls at the same time, at least with the ZE551ML.

I do believe the selfie is dual active LTE on both sim's. The zenfone 2 ZE551ML however used subpar hardware and therefor is only LTE on one sim and 2G on sim2 with even data being blocked by software. The Laser is dual standby with LTE on both sim's. The selfie is less money than their supposed "flagship" ZE551ML, you'd be better off with the selfie than you would this model, it has better up to date hardware. 2G is already being shut down, so what Asus sells as a dual sim phone is in essence a single sim. Asus makes no apologies for using subpar outdated hardware and their customer service is horrid, as is their person Khang who represents them online.
Dual Active is able to handle 2 calls on both sims at the same time. Dual Standby is 1 call at a time on each sim.
If you bought the ZE551ML sorry, but you got suckered like I did. If you didn't buy it yet, don't there are plenty of companies out there in the same price range offering up to date hardware. I would love to replace my sim2 modem, but Asus said that is not an option.
2G data (edge etc) may be being shut down, but I haven't heard of gsm being shut down completely. Far too many handsets still out there that can't call on 3G or LTE.
Thanks for your reply. You're not the only one telling that 2G is being shutdown, but from my researches, it should not be shutdown in France before 2021. And I understand, still so many appliances using 2G connections ! And eh, I'm not buying the smartphone of my life, in 2 years I'll buy another one ...
Also, I searched, searched and searched again, cannot find another smartphone with dual sim, 4 Go RAM, 5,5" Full HD display for as little as 249€ ... And also a decent camera for that price ... I also read the audio part was great on this phone!
You're right, the Selfie seems great, would be a good choice for some magic selfies with my little son, but it lacks NFC and quick charge ... Also I read a review where the writer complained about poor audio quality : people called told him his voice wasn't clear ... That makes me a little bit afraid, for 299€ ...
Am I wrong on any concern?

3GPP and GSM have notified all telcom around the world that 2G network (call/EDGE) will shutdown in order for rollingout bandwidth for 4G and above. this WILL be on the year 2017.
guys i work in telco for a living, my old company which i still keep in touch with also confirmed this. i'm in their rival company though but we are good friends.
the reason being it is going to shut down also because of every node in the telecom network is going toward a PS and CS is basically obsoleted.
PS=packet core switch, CS=circuit core switch
at this very moment, all telecom are doing a lot of changes to their core network, most are trying to change the sigtran to a TCP/IP kind. ok enough said these are the facts.
Sooty84, what country are you talking about?
I checked again, in France there is a contract between Orange and Free running until Jan 2018 for 2G/3G (more than 2 years from now on), and plans for 2024 ... New licenses are still renewed for 2G, I don't think carriers would pay for something shutting down in a year ... And there are a lot of M2M devices out there only supporting 2G connexions. I'm pretty sure 2G will survive for some years in France.
Anyways that's not the main subject of this thread.
And I finally ordered a Selfie, because I saw a photography comparison where picture quality was much better on the Selfie than on the ZE551ML. Hope I'll be happy with it !

I'm in Singapore M1, previously i'm with Starhub.
3GPP told us to crease 2G network service by 2017, we are already preparing that. (moving MSC towards packet switching instead of ss7/sigtran link set)
I think you have to check again with your local telco again, the front line guys won't know about this, the sales guy probably won't tell you either.
BTW you stated 2G/3G, in my case i meant 2G only. 3G itself is a packet service and it will be telco fundamental. 2G gonna retire.
as i stated, they are cleaning this out because of limited radio bands,
they are making way for 4G and above to use these 800mhz 900mhz 1800mhz bandwidth. or at least cather extra for the 3G. this depend on what 3GPP want. all we know is to convert to packet switch due to retirement 2G network.
perhaps you wanna check with sorg, he is from chuanghwa telco in taiwan?
I am trying to figure out the specs or model for the calling radio card on this phone. I live in a rural area and was trying out phones. I am on tmobile service and was testing with a Stylo 4 for a few weeks, calls were pretty good. I recently switched to test G7, seems the quality in the signal and voice is not as good. I am a little baffled. But it has only been 2 days and maybe its the weather or something.
In the mean time, I am trying to find out the type of radio card / chipset for voice calls on this phone. I prefer LG and trying to find a phone with best call quality. Carrier service is good and they are deploying a large amount of 71 band, im currently not getting it yet but holding out. This is just the reason behind phone selection and I know band has little to do with quality.
Thanks
The antenna and construction of the phone is more relevant then the chip. Besides 2g always gives you best signal
