I was able to get the custom rom for my Gio for 2.3.6 working and i love it! Thanks to you guys on the site. But my question is, i am wanting to have my wireless on the cell to stay FULLY on when i am home and then myself turn it off when i leave my apartment. This might sound as simple as just connecting to my wireless with my cell but whenever my cell goes in to "lock" mode, it seems my wireless takes a break.
Now, you might laugh at the reason why i need a feature like this. But my laptop died the other and i need to get alerts from my email at different times around my apartment. I don't have a data plan either.
I have tried some "AUTO WIFI" "Always On Wifi" programs but they don't do the job.
so my question is, what do you guys recommend?
the solution is very simple
go to settings, wireless and networks, wifi settings, then press the menu key (left side beside the middle button), click advanced, and set wifi sleep policy to never

I have a good tip for you, install Llama.
It automatically detects when you leave home, and you
can set a profile that automatically turns of WiFi when you do.

On most Android Devices, when you connect to WiFi, your 3G disappears. This doesn't occur on my 2.2 Defy. Is this normal?
Mine does that too, but not completely. After the upgrade WiFi always disconnects when the phone sleeps (in 2.2.1 US the setting to force WiFi had gone away), and it takes a while after a turn-on for WiFi to be re-established, after which the 3G icon goes away. BUT, this is not the case right after reboot when for the 3G icon to go away I need to first toggle WiFi off and on.

That's the crux; that setting is absent in 2.2.1 (as I mention in the text you quoted)
Do you still have ability to select preferences in wifi calling -- if so, does that help over-ride 3G with wifi?

The short answer; yes, and no, the long; had to rename the app first, and the Calling Preferences is there and it was set to WiFi preferred.
So, it seems that the WiFi behavior is one of those things that still needs fixing in the 34.4.9 release.
Yes mine does it too. It did it on 2.1, and now 2.2.1. After about a half hour the 3G icon goes away. Doesn't bother me.
Mine wasn't doing this on 2.1, and yes, it bothers me. I'm on a limited data plan, so I have to make sure that most of my big downloads happen through WiFi.

It still uses Wi-Fi even though both icons are showing. I track my use with NetCounter from the Market, and "Data" is always 0 (zero) when I have both icons.
Guys I am going away with work for four months somewhere which will cost me fortune to use my phone. That said I want to take it with me use it as a tablet of sorts as I have access to wifi.
I know I can turn off mobile data, but can I disable the GSM modem too. Basically I want airplane mode but with wifi enabled. That way there is no chance of any costs been incurred.
Thanks
Don't know if it works for you, but I just tested like this:
- Go to Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile networks/Network operators
- Just select an operator different from the sim card you have
Wifi should still work.
I use a free app from market called airplane settings that allows you to select which radios to keep active when turning on airplane mode. It works with latest Runny v4 so should work for you.

Turn on Airplane mode, then turn on WiFi. Wifi should be turned on and gsm is still off
I do what i want, because I can.

Never thought to try that as figured airplane mode would have killed the wifi entirely. It seems to work so thanks!
What about just removing the SIM Card?

Would perfer to keep it in, there is the availability to use my phone where I am going, just is very expensive, if need be I can then just turn it back on and make a quick call/send a text. Just dont want it standby all the time with the ability to cost me a fortune to recieve calls!

I must than be doing something wrong here. The moment I go into Airplane mode, my WiFi gets turned off and won't turn on untill I disable airplane mode. So what's the catch here.

What you want is very easy just go to setting> wireless. And then take the mark away by data connection.
And if you want airplane mode with wifi enabled that's easy to: First put airplane mode on and after that switch wifi back on.
Yep, switch to Airplane-Mode and turn on Wifi.
I did that some weeks ago when I went to Israel and gonna do it again when i'll be in England this weekend.

Yes indeed or else you will be charged if people speak into your voicemail. Well I already disabled it for a long time, I don't see the use off voicemail, people can better send an e-mail or text message.

Are you guys running stock ROM's or costom ones.
I tested it yesterday several times, but when I go into Airplane mode, I can enable WiFi but it does not connect to known AccessPoints.
Also does not give me a list of found AccessPoints.
[edit]
Just because I wouldn't instantly disbelieve you guyes I tried it one more time, and a miracle happend.
It connected to the WiFi access point on Airplane mode.
So what you were saying is the correct way
Had forgotten about the voicemail part, thankfully I can phone it myself before i leave and disable it from the options menu so thats easy enough. Will just place a new message on it from me saying I am away and to contact me by email.
Thanks for the help though, I knew you guys would have a solution to this!
*#*#4636#*#*
1. Put *#*#4636#*#* into the Dialer (or use any application available on the Market like 4636 — takes you to the same service screen)
2. Choose Phone Information
3. Press Turn off radio
Thanks

Turning ON Airplane and Switching ON WiFi works like a charm.
Thanks..
I know its old thread but good for googlers. Airplane mode will not disable internal modem as you can still see its active under battery details straight red bar = weak or searching for signal. Its draining battery and its still able send/receive data. I read about flashing a script to completely turn it off and cut its power but it shows pie security error in terminal -.- I deleted dialer&related stuff from phone as its only used with VoiP so I can't access service menu. Do you still get red line in battery details and does the modem stays off after a reboot? Some devices you can actually physically remove the modem.
Hi all, Im having a problem that is slowly driving me insane for the past 2 weeks. I surely cant be the only one. Anyway, I generally move between home and work daily, both have WIFI. When Im at home Im connected, all fine. I travel to work, WIFI isnt connected, again this is normal. I get into work and when I expect it be connected to WIFI it isnt, WIFI is off and I have to manually turn it back on to get it connected to WIFI again. Why do I have to do this? Why have all my other Android devices just worked normally and reconnect to known networks. Its soooo frustrating
Anyone have same problem or have a resolution?

Both Stock rom, with and without the volume fix, and Modaco MCR4. Wifi settings are set as WIFI on even during sleep.

I have posted this in other people's threads in regards to poor wifi reception. I recently purchased a 9250 through bell canada and have the same problem.
I have turned off the 'avoid poor connections' as well. It turns on and off on its own and can't get through a download of more then 5MB on wifi.
It will also reconnect on its own if I have left wifi turned on. I would say while WIFI is turned on I may actually be connected 30% of the time. This is 90% in 2 feet away from a router.
I'm having the same issue (wifi turning itself off) - noticed it the other day and just assume I'd caught the wi-fi button (I use extended controls). Happened again this morning and also just now as I got home.
I've not modded anything on my Nexus (4.0.1) - avoid poor connections has been disabled for a while.
I may test the theory, but betweek home and work is a wifi enabled bus journey, I never use it but it always tells me there's a wifi available. I might turn wifi notification off and see it if turns itself off before I get to work in the morning...
Left home with wifi on... Got to work and wifi was off? Wtf?
Could it be extended controls?

You are not the only one, it's happening to me in exactly the same scenario. Oddly enough it hasn't happened today.
i cant make out of your post thast the wifi on/off button turns of? or just the connection to the wifi adres?
i dont know about any sleep or auto turn of policy's as i didnt try it(i always turn off my wifi when travling)
but if its the last thing.
than the problem might not even be the GN.?
but the router it self.
even computer's and laptopt can have problems when the password is too long,or to different(hard characters like :';/.m,[email protected]#$%^&**(() ][ )
it might also be the MHZ setting,as the 20MHZ has wider range but can be disorted by machines like microwaves.
but the 40MHZ has lower range but wouldnt be disorted.
as there is also the channel option thats has been set wrong/or the pasword encryption. or any other router conflicting with the router you want to connect.
it might also be the router not liking your GN.(as my spica doesnt conect to my router at home, but all my other devices do.my router doesnt want to give a IP to my spica.)
It just happened to me again now, left the office whilst wifi was on and connected. Grabbed some lunch and returned (about 20 mins) and now my wifi button is set to off and I need to set it back to on.

Can't see any policy settings or any power save features. Running stock.
somehow I have fixed it. Problem is I don't know how.
Here is what I did in case anyone else needs help;
*From the 'My Vodafone' app, select wi-fi finder, in settings untick 'Enable BT Openzone'
*Settings, wi-fi, advanced, untick 'Network Notification', untick 'Avoid poor connections'
Not sure which of the above actually fixes it but my Wi-Fi has been on for about 1 1/2 days now.
Have you or when did you upgrade to 4.0.2? As the changelog mentions a wifi fixed. Only upgraded this morning so won't see if it has worked until I get home...

So I am still having this problem since day one. I have travelled through 3 countries and multiple cities and tried to use WIFI in at least 20+ different instances and the problem is the same.
It connects right away (really quickly actually) will stay connected for a bit then eventually loses connection.
I can't download any of the big packages for the games and so I can't play them. I won't use my data connection for anything over 100mb.
I got a message for an update yesterday. Updated the phone but I see no difference in the Android version number.
Anything happening with this?
I thought the update i was downloading was 4.0.2 but i guess it wasn't.
I am familar with updating and flashing from the galaxy s. But I want to use the phone completely stock for while.
I have just returned my nexus for a replacement. Lets see how it goes.
So far I have had the power shut off once while toggling the wifi widget (never happened on my other phone). And the wifi has disconnected twice. I have just done the update (not 4.0.2) and it seems to work a little better.
Called samsung yesterday after getting the replacement phone when it had the same issue (just as a reminder I have tried it on numerous routers/ap's) and they said they hadn't heard of the issue.
I said I was just calling to provide some feedback. They told me to return the phone yet again. I obviously believe I don't have a problem with the hardware at all. I figured if store let me return it, then why not.
Anyway onto my 3rd one today and the exact same problem.
I think that even though I am turning off "Avoid Poor Connections" it isn't actually turning that 'feature' off. Every so often and only if your watching the wifi settings it will say that it disconnected the wifi connection due to low signal.
Mind you all of this is 1' from my router while sitting at my computer. My galaxy S is sitting beside me and has maintained a wireless link to the router the entire time.
My phone is always connecting to WiFi connections automatically (as they come in range).
I don't want it to. I only want it to automatically connect to the ones which I specify (my home, my office...).
How can I configure to only connect to the networks which I specify?

you know, i don't have that behavior, my phone only connects to networks it remembered.
In the list of available wifi networks the remembered ones are at the bottom. If I hold down and select 'forget network' then they go away.

My list of available wifi shows maybe about 100 or more entries. How can I delete them all?
I have Cricket wireless service. I had initially installed a cricket app for managing wifi and I believe it may have added all of those wifi connections. I wonder if this has somehow messed up my phone. I have since deleted the app, but the problem still persists. :crying:
Well I guess deleting one at a time would work eventually

That clearly is not a realistic option as it would take me a very long time to delete that list. I also don't believe that it will fix the problem. Every time I pass a WiFi network it will just get added to the list again.
Just the other day, I was sitting on a bus and we were driving alongside another bus which offered WiFi to its passengers. My phone automatically tried connecting to the other bus's WiFi.
Does anyone know how to configure this, so that I only automatically connect to the WiFi networks that I specify? This is making using my phone with this version of Cyanogenmod very frustrating.
Hi does anyone know how to fix this please when screen is off it keeps disconnecting at work so no notifications come through as dead zone for mobile data! If screens left on its fine, never did it as often when I had galaxy S9 Plus hardly ever went off! Has the mate 20 x got an aggressive doze mode or is there some options in developer mode? Any help would be great thanks!
just guessing here, but look in the wifi advanced settings to see if there is a switch to keep it on all the time. If not, enable Developer Mode by tapping on "build number" in the "About Phone" section of the menu seven times, then look for the proper setting in the Developer Settings section
Go to Settings>Battery>More Battery Settings. There, enable the "Stay connected when device sleeps" option. Done

If it doesn't disconnect when on your home network then it seems it's an issue with the work network, worth asking that network admin if there are any special settings to allow your phone on the network all the time. Being in a hospital it makes sense for security purposes that they have tighter control what devices are allowed on the network, even if you have the passphrase I would think they don't want any device to connect that could pose a security risk. Works for me at home and work, have AL00, but I have admin access to both networks.

Don't think it's the case... They can do it on airports but not in hospital.. It is simply huawei + Chinese.. Global version or eu version won't disconnect.. It is probably not wifi disconnection or mobile data disconnected, but problem is sync.. There is longer interval or just sync gets killed because battery policy or threshold is long than usual.. In Chinese versions "sinc" feature missing it is there but hidden and even missing in drop down menu..
Problem is dat app is being cut off from network and sync is bit lazy...
On Eu or global versions sync si problaly set for 5min interval.. And in Chinese there is or will get killed some point
