I can't get the stock browser to save my useragent selection. I'm changing it by entering about:useragent in the browser. I select desktop and it works for the current window, but when I leave and return the useragent is defaulted to android again. Any suggestions?

+1 I would also like to know if anyone found a solution to this besides use a different browser.
+ 1, hope someone has something.

This has been a question for day one with the device. I tried changing this and know what has to be fixed but i can't do it. We need to have the framework-res.apk file modified to have this fixed. I will do some inquiring and see what i can find.

Thanks for taking the initiative. I really don't know where to start.
I just made a bookmark for the useragent code and select it. Works pretty painlessly until a better technique comes up.
Opera browser does display desktop display.
If take sites you regularly visit and bookmark the Desktop url, you can just go to the bookmark for those sites and most browsers will display the desktop.
System searching those sites then works most efficiently..and it'll desktop them.
or u can follow the guide in this section to remove sprint proxy, that should also fix the issue.

The proxy fix didnt help the user agent for me. My user agent still reverts back to custom.
Does any know whats actually causing this to happen? The user agent change on other browsers such as dolphin does not work for me either.
Devo
There are a few threads in the devo section addressing this issue.... For now there doesn't seem to be a solid workaround. I'm sure there will be ROMs in the coming weeks that fix it. A PITA to be sure...
YMMV
I know there is a setting that says request desktop site but it want save the setting, is there a permanent way to change the user agent to desktop mode?
Thanks

I dont know know how to do it in stock browser but in Dolphin you can change to any user agent including iPhone.

Looked through the stock browser and I don't see any settings allowing the user agent to be adjusted. Might have to make the adjustment thru smali/reversing the apk or in source code and compiling from AOSP.
Otherwise, as suggested above, 3rd party browsers might be more likely to allow this information to be changed.

In the broswer search field type in about:debug, hit enter. Go to settings>debug>UAString and choose Desktop
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
That's strange. In all the blurb leading up to the release it was said multiple times that there was an option to select Desktop view for sites, albeit without the ability to remember your preference.

There is an option. The OP wanted it to always request the desktop version for all websites instead of having to select it for each one.
about:debug isn't permanent, as said above. Whenever you're redirected to a mobile website hit the settings icon and there will be a request the full website option. Isn't the same as setting the UA string but gets you there.
So anybody find a *permanent* fix for this yet? With all due respect to devs, not really sure why all the time and effort is being put into ROMs, etc, when simple things like permanent UA string mods haven't been sorted out yet...
There's an app in the market based on the ics browser called "ics browser+" that has the option. Its the stock browser with more features

I sorted it two weeks ago.
I make no guarantee it works on:
OEM anything.
Pre 4.0.3 roms.
non Team BAMF roms. (That can be fixed by re-signing)

Will check it out now...FWIW I'm running 4.0.3 CM9 kang, so we'll see what happens....
the browser fc after 4.2.1 update, test it with the factory image and custom rom, same resolt
it fc on sites like android atuthority and many others..
anyone else?
I have the same issue.
Clearing the cache did not help.

Same here... with different ROMs. It started yesterday when I had a 4.1.2 custom ROM. It shows the same behaviour after wiping everything and flashing several 4.1 or 4.2.1 ROMs.
Same here. I think It's a javascript error, but disable javascript is not a good solution.
I hope it's not intentionally bug creation to make users use chrome browser.
Same here. I've even gone back and reloaded a couple of backup roms I had saved that I know worked fine and all the 3rd party browsers fc.
Hmm, I couldn't replicate the issue. Sites are opening fine for me desktop and mobile versions alike.
I have a GSM GNex, i9250, stock 4.2.1, rooted, custom recovery.

It is not FC exactly. It just closes on you. It happens to me while I browse phonearena.com

Are ther any news about this issue? It definitely does not occur on all webpages, but on some. The next thing I will try is to use a different browser.
Try disabling flash in browser settings or just switch on demand.
I noticed it closes on sites with high flash content

Thanks for the hint. What actually seems to work is disabling javascript.
If you star this issue, a google dev may get interested: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40784&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
I am experiencing the same issue
Jelly bean sorcery3.1 (android 4.2.1)
Phone now seems sluggish in general and the browser seems to be force closing all the time
Also getting a lot of SOD's and general unresponsiveness
Weird thing is I've been on this rom for a while and it just recently seems to be doing this
edit: my mistake, my rom is actually 4.1.2 so maybe its an unrelated problem but my browser is still extremely unstable
It seems unrelated to the android version you are running. My 4.1.2 tablet browser started crashing also recently. To complicate matters browsing in incognito mode seems to solve problems even with javascript enabled.

I have the same issue. Was on an AOSP 4.2.1 ROM and switched back to a 4.1.2 instead (fresh wipe/flash, even formatted system before flashing 4.1.2 ROM) and still getting it with the stock browser. Visited the same websites on the chrome browser and no closes. You guys are right though, it's not a normal "FC". It just closes and brings you back to the homescreen, almost like if you just hit the home button. When I go to open the browser back up, sometimes the page will load back up from scratch, but sometimes it will just bring me to blank page (my homepage) and I have to start all over to get back where I was.
EDIT:
Also commented on the link above and voted on it.
I have exactly the same issue. I just purchased the gn 2 days ago. I let it update from the stock image. I only rooted and added busybox with a to available here on xda.
With some site the browser window disappear. I also noticed that all tabs are gone when I open the browser again: it just reset all open windows.

I don't have this issue anymore.
I think that Google Play Services were auto updated. I'm not sure if this is what resolved the issue.

I found this popup browser in the app store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ium=organic&utm_term=popup+browser+play+store
It's still in Beta so it's not perfect, but it works pretty well.
Give the developer some time and appreciation and more releases will be announced.
I know a lot of people have been looking for the downloadable popup browser app from the system, but this is the closest I can find without having a custom flashed rom.
If you do know how to have the system's popup browser as an app, please let me know.
If I helped you, give me a thank

What "custom flashed Rom" includes a download capable pop-up browser?
The Jellybomb 11.0 rom.

How ironic... here we are on computers with internet browsers that have built-in pop-up blockers and mobile schmucks are trying to install or use pop-up windows. Go figure...

You mis understood.
It's an internet browser that acts as a popup on mobile so yoi don't have to leave your current page, you just popup another browser if you need to do so.
It is not merely a popup with an ad.
It doesnt popup at random times, only when you click the app.

How's that different from tabbed windows? You won't leave your current page if you open a new url in a tab....

Are serious? ... first of all yes you will leave your current page unless you set "open new tab in background". Second a pop up browser you can use above any app, it's a mini browser, it's nothing like using multiple tabs.

I'm sorry it isn't helpful for you guys.
I find it handy especially if im not in a Web Page, if im in an app or somewhere else on the fun and wanna do a quick search, it's handy.
I guess if you don't appreciate or use it, just don't even say anything, thanks.
And also, system popup browser apk on Macks Rom.

It can play youtube videos, can be resized, etc.
Im sorry you didn't find this helpful, I guess im sorry for wasting your time?
If you wont like or appreciate, just dont even respond lol.
That's also basing it off of multi tasking.
If you dont have multi tasking you should probably get that update

Also the Macks Rom has the system popup browser as an apk.

Very cool thank you!

No, I dont believe any of them download that I've seen. Sorry
I'm having a weird issue in that I can't input text on a particular website (MyMathLab - it's where I do my math homework). The site lets me log in and click on links, but when I get logged in and pull up the math problems, I click in the box where you're supposed to enter text, the cursor blinks, but the keyboard no longer pops up for me to type anything. I'm using Swiftkey, but I also have (and have tried to use) google keyboard and hackers keyboard.
I used to be able to do my homework on this site using my phone, but I'm not sure why the keyboard, regardless of which one I use, no longer pops up. I spoke to a rep from the site who says nothing has been updated recently and the site is supposed to be optimized for mobile. Anyone have any suggestions?
Its probably cos the site might have been updated and no longer supports smartphone keyboards. I know that cos I also do homework on my maths. And can't do stuff on my phone. If its not that then maybe you need a new browser and flash player. I suggest Mozilla Firefox or Google chrome. Hope it helps.

I've tried all the available browsers. I bet it is the site - the guy I talked to didn't seem too sure of himself when he said there hadn't been any updates.
Just an update in case anyone runs into this - the FlashFox browser fixed this issue for me.
You can right away.
