Yes, and no I don't. Check out the Android Building google group.
I use Linux myself.
If your going to build android why not build it on the OS it is based on?

My guess was he is trying to say just the kernel is based on Linux... when actually it IS a Linux kernel.

Well, it is a mach bsd kernel, but I would take the Linux kernel over it any day.
Mac OS doesn't need drivers, Mac OS is closer to Android compared to Windows. It is great for theming for sure

I don't think Windows is ideal for anything other than...well nothing non-game related.
If you want to stick with whats close to Android...go with Linux.

Hi, I'd like to ask two questions about our Desire Zs.
Firstly, I'd like to know if its possible to boot any kind of Linux from our Desire Zs. From what I know, our bootloader is designed to booting any kind of Linux right?
Secondly, I would also like to know if its possible to compile a pure AOSP build, and run it on our DZ. Again, from what I know, the DZ can run Android, through startup scripts, so it should be able to run a pure AOSP build right?
Anybody able to correct my poor understanding of the DZ, and Android?
Thank You!
Grab one of the aosp roms and find out. Android is the only operating system that comes on dz/g2 so I'm not sure what you mean

There should be guides if you search for running debian on the g2/dz. And yes you can run AOSP, so long as it's built for the dz/g2. Cyanogenmod is AOSP based, so is the stock g2 rom I think.

Actually what I meant, was whether I could load in any generic android source through CWM, and have it working. But thanks though for your answer.

I see. Thanks for your answer. Though I had the impression that AOSP was a generic android source, suitable for any phone just by downloading a copy, and loading it in through CWM.

Not really suitable for any phone. If that was the case, we would have 100% working ICS roms by now, or even in the week of release.
From the little i understand, Android needs drivers for each component just like windows does, and those drivers are not in the AOSP
AOSP typically only contains drivers for the Nexus dev phone for each particular release, I think. Though ICS is an exception because soon after initial release they put in drivers for the Nexus S as well as Galaxy Nexus, and the Motorola Xoom tablet too.
As has been said, you need to take AOSP then add hardware-specific drivers.

I see.. I always had the impression that the drivers were in the Kernel, so, the phone has to interface through drivers in the /system then through the kernel?
So, if this applies to other distros, say Angstrom Linux, i need to port each driver, then it should work when i install it with CWM right? Correct me if i'm wrong, but our bootloaders are designed to boot any linux right?
if you want to install linux on your phone have a look at this app:

it´s not native, so you do not have to mess up your android system

this is for any dev that wants to try and port android jellybean to the s3 Tmobile version. they already ported it to the internationl version so i think that might make it a little easier. here is the OP in the international section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737449

Hmmm...
Wonder if we could take that ROM, change the updater-script to match our mounting points....then we just need a kernel....
Which we have one kernel already made. Not sure if it would work though.
If anyone would help set up a build environment that would work for our kernels and roms then I will gladly help and start learning.

Well, it shouldn't take too long. It may be possible to build a CM9 Kernel for our phones using parts of the stock kernel that we have access to.
Once the JB source is released, an S3 port might actually be viable. Otherwise it's essentially just flashing a gnex image and praying something/anything works.

a CM9 kernel shouldn't be needed, just a modded kernel for our specific phone from what i believe.
We know this, but it's more of an experiment. Also, it helps work out anything we may need to do early on with the modules and drivers

Why not take this ROM, change the updater-script for our mount points, remove the flashing of the boot.img, flash ROM then flash the kernel Roman release?
Think that would work?

It could, in theory. But we would need to work on the modules for anything to work. Could you post our mount points?
why does it have to be a cm9 kernel?
to be completely honest, as soon as we get a cm9 alpha, we will see some worth while stuff! but until then. TouchWiz it iz. We will have team kang's AOKP in no time im sure. i cant wait to see wuts to come. especially since this phone is at all the major carriers and they are all basically exactly the same! should be epic.

Hello all.
I saw that the binaries have been updated for the Galaxy Nexus on this page:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/drivers
Does anyone know how to actually pull and install the binaries? I tried running the script but I get an error saying that it couldn't display the license.
Thanks.
EDIT: I thought it was as simple as extracting and replacing an object file. According to this, it looks like you need to source to extract and then build.
https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!msg/android-building/2fXGtHA98CI/wxGnntR7Za8J
I use those binaries just fine with the script.

Are you extracting within the source tree?
Noob question... will these binaries improve the existing roms that are around? I was looking to flash a new rom on my vzw nexus, but is it worth waiting for developers to integrate these binaries?

In theory, they should.
The JRO03C aosp binaries for maguro and toro have been released for a few days now, and those scripts are to be run in a linux terminal. They work fine. They are also needed to build a rom for those devices from (aosp) source code (we dont have the source for those components, thats why we use the binaries provided by Google).

Can you install them to any 0H rom? If so, how?
Hey guys I have been getting into a lot of modding and such I was wondering what programs you guys recommend using to develop apps, roms, mods and stuff like that on a mac. I just have one request; please don't tell me to get a windows computer. I can't afford it or I would.
Thanks for any help
For apps, you can easily install Eclipse and download all of the Android SDK bits.
You can also partition your hard drive and run Linux .
It's actually better to use a Mac than a PC. You don't really need any special apps or tools besides what comes in the SDK. And on a Mac, you can build android from source. You can't on a PC.
I have a Mac and I've used it for developing
Thanks for the quick replies. Can the SDK tools be used to tweak apks?

Before porting Sailfish, better idea to devs is start compiling 4.3. Or wait for KitKat.
