Hi, I'd like to ask two questions about our Desire Zs.
Firstly, I'd like to know if its possible to boot any kind of Linux from our Desire Zs. From what I know, our bootloader is designed to booting any kind of Linux right?
Secondly, I would also like to know if its possible to compile a pure AOSP build, and run it on our DZ. Again, from what I know, the DZ can run Android, through startup scripts, so it should be able to run a pure AOSP build right?
Anybody able to correct my poor understanding of the DZ, and Android?
Thank You!
Grab one of the aosp roms and find out. Android is the only operating system that comes on dz/g2 so I'm not sure what you mean

There should be guides if you search for running debian on the g2/dz. And yes you can run AOSP, so long as it's built for the dz/g2. Cyanogenmod is AOSP based, so is the stock g2 rom I think.

Actually what I meant, was whether I could load in any generic android source through CWM, and have it working. But thanks though for your answer.

I see. Thanks for your answer. Though I had the impression that AOSP was a generic android source, suitable for any phone just by downloading a copy, and loading it in through CWM.

Not really suitable for any phone. If that was the case, we would have 100% working ICS roms by now, or even in the week of release.
From the little i understand, Android needs drivers for each component just like windows does, and those drivers are not in the AOSP
AOSP typically only contains drivers for the Nexus dev phone for each particular release, I think. Though ICS is an exception because soon after initial release they put in drivers for the Nexus S as well as Galaxy Nexus, and the Motorola Xoom tablet too.
As has been said, you need to take AOSP then add hardware-specific drivers.

I see.. I always had the impression that the drivers were in the Kernel, so, the phone has to interface through drivers in the /system then through the kernel?
So, if this applies to other distros, say Angstrom Linux, i need to port each driver, then it should work when i install it with CWM right? Correct me if i'm wrong, but our bootloaders are designed to boot any linux right?
if you want to install linux on your phone have a look at this app:

So, since AlphaRev is comming soon(-ish) I would like to get some information about roms. Or some suggestions.
I'm looking for a non-sense rom, that is fast (preferably Gingerbread).
Also; If I install CM7 (GB) will I have to install any custom kernels for overclocking?
Thank you for your help :]
No, CM7 comes with a kernel that supports overclocking by default.
ROM List here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
Thanks for that info.
Concerning your list, I'm looking for some input from other users
Can't really help you there, because the only AOSP (Non - Sense) ROM I have used till date is CM7, both stable and nightlies. Personally, I am very satisfied with it, and would whole heartedly recommend it, but, ROM choice is a personal thing.

What is the main advantage of nightlies over the stable one?
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA Premium App
Nightlies integrate many changes, developed over time. They are kind of "unofficial / beta builds", so there's no official support for bugs on those. Thus, nightlies may give new features, but may also have the potential for introducing new bugs.
One example: The nightlies use Android 2.3.4 since quite a while back, but all stable versions are still on 2.3.3. The next stable version will obviously incorporate 2.3.4
Thank you
Guess I'll go for the stable cm7 once AlphaRevX comes.

Part 3. Assuming you have got the correct custom Recovery installed correctly.
Thanks for that, now I feel prepared :]
Hey all! I've been real interested in developing my own variation of the Android Rom. Such as custom themes, my own boot screen and things of that manner. I do a little Java and have the SDK but I want to know how hard it is to compile your own working Rom. My biggest hurdle at this point is I have a an Xperia Play R800x (CDMA, Locked Boot-loader) and from what I see most custom Roms out there need Unlocked Boot-loaders to run properly or a lot of work to work with CDMA.
I've searched around the forums but couldn't find to much of making your own Rom variant.
Thanks for any future help!
I don't have any dev advice per se. However the one piece of advice I will pass along is this: make sure that what you post is your own work! If you do borrow anything from someone else, please get their permission first, and give credit where credit is due.
We have had a run of "devs" lately that take someone else's work, make extremely minor changes and then post it up as their own work.

The only thing I plan to borrow is the method of how some devs have CDMA working. Other than that, I will use the Vanilla AOSP Roms, most likely just 2.3.3 (Which I guess in theory I could modify my current Rom on my phone) or 2.3.4 (If Verizon chooses to update any year from now). I would love love to mod out Ice Cream Sandwich for Xperia but that is not feasible at this point.
The theme I really want why I'm off topic for a second is the HTC Rhyme "Sense" theme I believe it's called. It's truly nifty in terms of how it works.
You won't necessarily need an unlocked bootloader, that's only necessary if you're using a ROM that needs a new kernel, such as CyanogenMod or a different firmware level, such as from 2.3.3 to 4.0. That being said, you may want to check out Cola or GBTweaked or IT-Rom for inspiration. They're all available for the Locked R800x phones, and I'm pretty sure they all have tweaks thrown around in there that have nothing to do with needing an unlocked bootloader. I say "pretty sure," because I've only used Cola, then got my bootloader unlocked.
If you do make a rom for locked bootloaders, I believe it will need to be released in the form of a nandroid backup, in which case before you do that backup, you'll need to remove all of your personal information from it.

I think I understand this, so say I want to use 4.0.3 (Latest stable ICS build) on Xperia via Vanilla Android as my base Rom, I'd have to write a new kernal and that would need a unlocked boot-loader? Makes sense. I guess for now I will wait until 2.3.4 pushes since it will be a different setup on my phone before developing. Plus 2.3.4 has all the bug fixes.
Hope you didn't take offense at my input. And I hope you do dev something up for the locked boot loader set. I was one myself not so long ago. They certainly can use some ROM lovin'!

No offense at all. Believe me, I come from the emulation of online games community and see first hand how people steal others work and call it theirs. World of Warcraft, Aion, Rift etc all have stolen code and lost projects. EQ 1 & 2 are the only projects that have a single core / team.
I believe in Open Source and that's why I love Android. I just wish the big companies would see that too instead of not letting us do what Android was meant to do, mod to our hearts content. (In my opinion at least)
There are many ways to create a rom, if you want to create a CDMA rom, why not use your own stock rom as a base? You can dump your /system/ partition, make whatever changes you see fit, then pop it in an update .zip. As you update your rom, you will learn from experience and other members how to create better roms, how to decompile/recompile .apk's, compiling kernels. Ect

As you all know "Ubuntu for phones" has been released for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. Lets discuss about this being a possiblity to port on our device.

Just curious, the porting guide says that Ubuntu runs over the stock kernel, if it's right, would it be possible to run it in dual boot?
Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) is having official support and currently the port is work in progress. Apart from the system partition size issue, if samsung galaxy s can run it, so can defy. This is very early stage and we can only presume such thing.

Should not be, most of the phones which can run cm 10.1 can easily handle this. Building it too doesn't look much difficult. "Ubuntu for phones" is surprisingly based on CM sources.
I've not enough speed for syncing sources, maybe Kayant or m11kkaa can build it for us.

Hopefully it will decide to work this time

So, I've got the ugly duckling of the Defy line(but I love it), the Defy Pro XT560. I was able to root using some adapted steps from a Motorola Motoluxe procedure(http://bruno.tuy.com.br/blog/?p=173, not in english). I'm wondering if anyone knows if this would mean there's a chance the phones are similar enough to possibly, maybe, someday get an updated ROM on the thing?
Similar? Not. Screens are not similar, hardware keyboard. I dont think its possible cuz of the screen resolution. It will be a pain in the "face".
I don't know enough about it. Apps seem to work fine with the resolution...is there a good guide for rom cooking somewhere? Maybe I'll play around myself since I doubt I can find anything that'll work with the phone.
Most of the apps are able to run on many devices cuz they support different resolution. It has nothing to do with the ROM.

What is the fundamental issue with a different resolution?
Check some ROM porting guide. Its written there that you have to choose ROMs with the same resolution cuz it will be easier to port. It means that u cant use the same ROM on 2 different phones with different resolution.

tryied with and without adb, with and wihout drivers, with two different phones and with 2 xp pc.
maybe something is't right with installer, or it is necessary use other os or to install something for it to work?
The installer needs to access adb. So either set your path to include the adb location or copy adb to the same directory as the installer script.
I really like the ability to use the HTC logo as a button, but the only way i know how to do this is the slim bean rom. So my question is, anyway to get this function on a sense based rom? All info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Never flash anything that was not made specifically for your device. If you bother to read the first post in most of those threads they specifically say that Verizon and sprint are not supported.
Please do not post links to potential harmful threads.
We will have custom kernels as soon as HTC releases kernel source for our device. If you can't wait that long then a few of the AOSP ROMs have the HTC logo working as a button.
