Improving Nexus' GPS - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So far the only problem I'm facing with nexus is that it has a lousy GPS. It keeps putting me off road inside houses and is kinda inaccurate. Any suggestions on improving this?

Can't really help there, my GNex's GPS is quite accurate; between 5-10 meters.

GPS Fix
Go there and download the GPS.conf file, took mine from a 5 min or more sat aquire to less than 5 seconds. There are also apps in ther market that help determin your location then look for the proper sats. However this .conf file has many other cool tweaks. It's an awesome read to gain some good info too.
Edit: Ok so silly me didn't see you weren't in the USA. The actual fix on that thread might not work for you but there is enough info that I think you can modify it to work. Good Luck.

What problems are you having with your gps? Most gps problems are solved by:
1. Going outdoors. Get a clear view of the sky and let the phone try to determine position for up to 10 minutes.
2. Rebooting
3. Reset agps data. Download GPS status app from the play store, reset is on the tools menu.
4. Gpsconf mods. If you are rooted, try installing faster gps app from the play store.
Provide some details and let's see if we can help.

Only active SIM. No 3G...

I've always had issues with my GPS locking ever since I've started putting custom roms on my Toroplus Gnex. I'm currently running MMuzzy latest build and my gps will takes several minutes indoors to lock if it ever does where my wife's stock Toroplus Gnex will lock in seconds. Outdoors I can generally get a lock quicker, but it still generally takes a few minutes where her's will take just a few seconds. I'm not sure if it's MMuzzy build, I doubt it as not everyone seems to have the issues I have, or it a built issue between Gnexes. I remember back when I had my HTC Hero certain phones would have GPS issues while others wouldn't; the thought was that depending on where and when the phone was built determined if it would work or not. Either way it's frustrating and there really isn't a solution as I've read that even if I went back to stock others have had continued issues with GPS lock.

hey i also have problems with this method

That's the problem. The gnex uses assisted gps (agps) which requires a data connection to fetch agps data. You should use the gps status app to automatically download agps data so you don't have to wait for the gps cold start ephemeris data.

You might try playing with gps conf. Try faster gps or swapping the gpsconf file from a stock toroplus ROM. Mmuzzy's builds are aosp, so the conf file probably doesn't have the carrier optimizations. Also, on Toro, I have found that the stock ROM gps drivers work differently from the ones Google publishes to aosp.

[Q] HUGE GPS issues with Captivate Glide - please help!

Hi all,
I am having huge GPS issues with my Samsung Captivate Glide.
The GPS will take forever to lock, or will not lock at all. If I use FAKEGPS app to set a mock location, it does not seem to acknowledge that at all.
I am rooted on the stock ROM. I have tried the GPS Status app, and the fix here. Still nothing!
As I am completely lost without GPS, I would really appreciate some help here.
Many thanks!
I found the first time can take long but if you leave GPS on the next time it needs it, it will be fast. So I just leave GPS on all the time. Seems like a cold start issue. Is that what you are having?

Hi - thanks for your reply.
No, my GPS is on all the time, as I use it all the time. It will either not lock, or lock on a HUGE area. Also, FAKEGPS app does not seem to be working now.

Did it work before Rooting? Just wondering as Maybe it may be hardware? I am using Osimood latest and it seems to work fine for me. If you do try another Rom that is known to work and still have issues. I would try to bring it back to stock as much as possible and take it to your Service provider for some Warranty Service.

I am not sure, but I think it worked before root. I did not have the time to use it that much before rooting it. I will try another ROM and see if that helps.
I am in the UK, so can't take the phone back to the service provider easily - a friend brought it over.
I have the same problem as the op. I live in Italy. Looks like there is something else to enable other than replacing the GPS Conf. Formerly I have owned Droid 2 Global, imported from North America like the Captivate Glide... In that case, GPS fixes worked. I don't think our phones need to be sent back to any customer service.

Glad to hear it's not only me. I also had Motorola Milestone 2 (aka Droid 2 Global) before this phone, and had GPS issues initially, but one of the fixes worked there eventually.
So wee need a fix for the Glide now, a one that works in Europe.
Thanks!

Thanks, but, 2 things:
1) I live in Argentina, we use NAM, I have the same issues as the OP.
2) I don't think the bands have something to do with a problem that's only related to the Internal GPS, I mean, we are talking about GPS Navigation, not Navigation using a Data Plan/Internet Conection.

Hi there,
Thanks for the response.
There's an app that will change the GPS server for you, but that did not help at all. So I'm also waiting for a fix.
With OSIMood Mine is working fine in Canada. Are the people that are having issues all outside of Canada and US? Is it working for anyone outside of Canada and US?
Yes, apparently. Darkyrom's fix is not working at all, so it must be something different than just putting up European servers.

If you aren't in Europe, just change the first 8 lines with your local servers (they can be found online, and links are around XDA as well). The rest should stay the same.
Don't mess around with GPS tool apps, they aren't needed here.

[News] Were you having GPS issues over the weekend?

http://www.xda-developers.com/android/galaxy-nexus-gps-issues-over-the-weekend/
Just posting this so everyone knows what's going on. On Sunday I was having the worst time figuring out why my phone couldn't lock onto a GPS signal, and now that I've heard this the issue seems to be fixed. I ran a quick fix on some GPS apps and all of them seemed to work (GPS Doctor, GPS Test, GPS Status).
Reports have been said that some meteor passed by earth (?) or a solar storm hit a group of satellites.
Hope this clears up the confusion.
Yeah, glad everything is back to normal now >10s locks

If you haven't done already: verify all location settings are turned on in the settings menu as well as in t the Google settings app. Download GPS status app. Go outside. Fire up the app and let it try to acquire. If that doesn't work, in gps status reset agps data, download agps data and try again. Did this work?
If you're rooted, you can just flash a better radio. That's what I did and it has improved drastically.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405345
If it's a fresh fix it can take up to 5 or 10 minutes at least, outside.
Start maps and make sure gps is attempting to acquire location and just wait. But be outside.

I would imagine coincidence.
Clear AGPS data with GPS Status as mentioned and use FasterGPS to change your region to North America or wherever you live. That should provide you with a faster fix.
My GPS suddenly on the fritz as well
Had the GSM Gnex about 10 months. Approx 10 days ago I start noticing the GPS status bubble in the notification bar (not filled in). I've messed with it, used a couple of the tools mentioned in this thread, no help. I've done power off, factory reset last night, all no help. It appears slow to find sats, never acquires. Stock 4.2.2 unrooted.
Any chance reloading 4.2.2 would help? Any advantage to doing so over factory reset?
Still under warranty I guess, but really prefer to solve myself if possible.
Thanks!

No, as mentioned in my original post, it slowly seems to find a couple satellites sometimes (last night in hotel running "GPS test", but never acquired).
Maps don't acquire. Today, inside or outside at lunch, couldn't even get it to find a satellite with "GPS status" app. The circle just spins and it says "looking for GPS location". I only gave it about 90 seconds outside as I was walking.

I assume you have an active sim and the phone has data service?
One last diagnostic - try to let the gps acquire outside for up to 10 minutes. If that doesn't work I'd recommend flashing back a factory image. If the factory image doesn't work you've got a hardware issue.

Yeah, SIM/phone works fine, just sent a test email now w/wireless off to ensure data is good, it arrived.
I'll try to reload JDQ39 tonight after work, already downloaded it last night.

It's been almost a month now. The way I get GPS to work for me is:
1) Use GPS status ; use Tools->Manage A-GPS state; then click Reset and then Download.
2) Go outside or near a window and get a lock ; the lock should not take that long. For this step, I like "GPS Test" app (not sure it actually makes a difference but it seems to).
3) Keep GPS turned on (for Kitkat, it will be in Battery Saving mode and not used much until something asks for it.
If I do this, I've gotten consistently working GPS and locks that don't take long at all (usually less than a minute and usually faster than that).
I use Waze to/from work 5 days a week and a few times during the weekend.
BTW, I'm running CM 11 2014 05/09 nightly for hlte on my Note 3 n900t. I don't think the ROM matters.
If I reboot or power off, I plan to use the above 3 steps. Having to do this is not optimal but having a predictable way to get GPS working is useful.
Dennis
Hmm might be why I don't seen to have a problem GPS, I leave it on all the time since it doesn't use the battery unless an app is actively using it.

I wouldn't flash this. Only one person said they did without causing problems for their phone and it didn't fix the issue (for them).
You are better off trying the TOPNTP app instead. I have GPS on all the time and don't have a locking problem.
Same problem here. When I use the GPS TEST it works. When I try using Waze or Google Maps, nothing. What's funny, if there's some fun in this, is that waze works ok in background when GPS TEST is open. At least I get voice directions. When I try oppening both in multi-window, Waze stops again... I've tried everything, from stock to every rom I found, but nothing makes the GPS works with Waze and GM.

GPS Issues with Htc 10?

Hey all!
I have an unlocked HTC 10 and the gps lock takes forever to happen and even have to do multiple tries.
I am not sure if this is a common issue or i just got a defective phone.
I am on the latest update of google maps and this issue is very annoying.
Hope someone can shed some light on this!

Sounds defective if your location settings is set to high accuracy. I have GPS lock in seconds via GPS status app.

This is what it looks like.
It takes minutes for the lock. I'll do a factory reset maybe.
Interesting observation : the gps lock happened on gps status app really quick. It'd on google maps it takes forever.

I have no idea which app that toast message is from... but it is not from Google maps. It is some other app.
I have only noticed an issue when in the parking garage at work, understandably since LoS to satellites is impaired. Once I am out of the garage lock happens within 10 seconds.

I am also having this problem on the Sprint HTC 10.
If I turn off LTE and put the phone into CDMA only, GPS locks in seconds. If I leave LTE on, it never finds my location.
I have RUU'd back to stock and reinstalled a mostly stock ROM and am still having problems.
EDIT: OP, this seems to have fixed it for me, or at least improved my GPS performance. I changed the capabilities value to 0x31.
Good luck.
EDIT 2: Nevermind. Above fix doesn't help. As soon as my phone connects to LTE and for as long as it's connected to LTE I have no GPS signal. Switch to CDMA only (force 3G connection) I immediately pick up GPS lock.
Not having much luck finding a solution.
Hey guys!
Thanks for all your inputs. I have initiated a return process. Don't want to deal with such issues, especially from a device this expensive.

It seems I was able to get it working.
It worked perfectly on a Stock ROM so I flashed a custom ROM over it and it appears to have straightened it out.
