Hi all,
I am having huge GPS issues with my Samsung Captivate Glide.
The GPS will take forever to lock, or will not lock at all. If I use FAKEGPS app to set a mock location, it does not seem to acknowledge that at all.
I am rooted on the stock ROM. I have tried the GPS Status app, and the fix here. Still nothing!
As I am completely lost without GPS, I would really appreciate some help here.
Many thanks!
I found the first time can take long but if you leave GPS on the next time it needs it, it will be fast. So I just leave GPS on all the time. Seems like a cold start issue. Is that what you are having?

Hi - thanks for your reply.
No, my GPS is on all the time, as I use it all the time. It will either not lock, or lock on a HUGE area. Also, FAKEGPS app does not seem to be working now.

Do you have Data enabled? As this is an agps I believe it uses Data to help it lock.
Yes, data and wifi enabled.

Did it work before Rooting? Just wondering as Maybe it may be hardware? I am using Osimood latest and it seems to work fine for me. If you do try another Rom that is known to work and still have issues. I would try to bring it back to stock as much as possible and take it to your Service provider for some Warranty Service.

I am not sure, but I think it worked before root. I did not have the time to use it that much before rooting it. I will try another ROM and see if that helps.
I am in the UK, so can't take the phone back to the service provider easily - a friend brought it over.
I have the same problem as the op. I live in Italy. Looks like there is something else to enable other than replacing the GPS Conf. Formerly I have owned Droid 2 Global, imported from North America like the Captivate Glide... In that case, GPS fixes worked. I don't think our phones need to be sent back to any customer service.

Glad to hear it's not only me. I also had Motorola Milestone 2 (aka Droid 2 Global) before this phone, and had GPS issues initially, but one of the fixes worked there eventually.
So wee need a fix for the Glide now, a one that works in Europe.
Thanks!
Still haven't found a solution. Did anyone put Gps to work in Europe? If so, how?

i'm not positive but i believe when you take NAM phone to EU you need to change something in build.prop in order for it to realize it's looking for EU sats ..... not positive however i know a few devs in the FLYER forum had to do this when they had NAM tablets shipped to them in the netherlands.... then when they made roms they had to give us a fix to switch build.prop back to NAM sats.... if any of this makes sense to anyone awesome... lol sorry for the ****ty explanation... i'll dig around and see what i can find. i'm picking this phone up for my mom today. her first smartphone.. so once she's had a bit to play with it i'll root it and dig around and see what i can find. btw feel free to do the same if you are already rooted

Thanks, but, 2 things:
1) I live in Argentina, we use NAM, I have the same issues as the OP.
2) I don't think the bands have something to do with a problem that's only related to the Internal GPS, I mean, we are talking about GPS Navigation, not Navigation using a Data Plan/Internet Conection.

Hi there,
Thanks for the response.
There's an app that will change the GPS server for you, but that did not help at all. So I'm also waiting for a fix.
With OSIMood Mine is working fine in Canada. Are the people that are having issues all outside of Canada and US? Is it working for anyone outside of Canada and US?
Yes, apparently. Darkyrom's fix is not working at all, so it must be something different than just putting up European servers.

Hey guys,
I have fixed Gps for myself. I have changed gps.conf manually, it now works like it should.
This is what you have to do:
Copy the following, make a text file, save it as gps.conf, replace it under /system/etc (first, mount R/W, you need to be root). Reboot. Try, and please report me. To me it's the only way it works, no app helped.

If you aren't in Europe, just change the first 8 lines with your local servers (they can be found online, and links are around XDA as well). The rest should stay the same.
Don't mess around with GPS tool apps, they aren't needed here.
If it works for you, please hit the thanks button.

There was a fix found for the captivate but not a of yet fit the glide. I attempted to use the GPS for the first time and realized that Samsung has not fixed this issue yet.
I tried using the app lbs test mode launch but the app quickly told me that lbstestmode.apk was not present in the system.
Any ideas a to how to fix this?
There are a few days where I don't receive gps signal at all and some days where the gps is fine. Don't quite know where the problem stems from, but from what I heard it seems different than from the original captivate issue. Any one else care to weigh in?

all lbstestmode settings can be manually edited in the file /system/etc/gps.conf
or there could be a sencond copy in /system/vendor/etc/gps.conf
vendor folder is full of carrier tweaked files that supersede the original files not in vendor/

Thanks, I'll have to check into that and see if the GPS fix fit the regular captivate will work
I have found an official fix for the GPS on the capitate glide. Here is the site that has the fix.
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/guide-gps-quickest-fix-solution.2022/
I used root explorer to insert the file. Just a note, be sure to make a backup copy of the original before hand, just in case! But I can confirm that it worked for me. You must be rooted for this to work.
What are we talking about here? My GPS works fine as far as I can tell.

There is a known problem with the GPS not locking or it taking a long time to lock on your location. Some phones may not have this problem if your lucky! Samsung is aware but they haven't done anything about it yet. This fix us is suppose to take care of the problem. And it did fit me! Before my navigator would not work at all, now it works great!
I will try to work on posting a guide soon, there are quite a few steps involved doing this without a PC. But you must be rooted first.
For those who have already updated to 2.3.6 I'm not sure if you can still root, nor if the GPS fix is included in the update for AT&T
I've never had a problem with my GPS on my Rogers Glide. What issues are you guys having?
Did this actually fix the GPS Issue?
None of the fixes/apps I tried seems to fix the problem. Obtaining GPS fix takes forever...
I've had no problems with GPS so far. It always gets a fix on my location almost immediately.

+1 on no problems with GPS. I came from the original Captivate and the GPS on the Glide is much better.
Here's a tip for anyone still using the original. Take the back cover off and get a Body Glove hard rubber case. The GPS was awesome once I figured out the back cover interfered with it. Worst part is I didn't figure that out until right before I replaced it.
OP, are you completely stock or have you changed kernels/rooted?
I had major issues at one point after rooting and messing with kernels but it ended up just being a bad flash.

Yes at least for me it did!
Not sure if there is a problem on all glides, but both my wife's and my phone did not work at all. I used this method to fix mine, but have not been able to did her's yet, since she did the update to 2.3.6 I'm afraid to try to root , at least till someone can verify that it can be rooted after the update!
I rooted after the update. It flashed me back to 2.3.5 firmware, but I still have the 2.3.6 kernel, sans CarrierIQ. I am unable to update via the OTA option in the phone, and have yet to try flashing another option, but the updates don't really seem all that important to me, as long as I'm CIQ-free.

GPS Fix
Go there and download the GPS.conf file, took mine from a 5 min or more sat aquire to less than 5 seconds. There are also apps in ther market that help determin your location then look for the proper sats. However this .conf file has many other cool tweaks. It's an awesome read to gain some good info too.
Edit: Ok so silly me didn't see you weren't in the USA. The actual fix on that thread might not work for you but there is enough info that I think you can modify it to work. Good Luck.

What problems are you having with your gps? Most gps problems are solved by:
1. Going outdoors. Get a clear view of the sky and let the phone try to determine position for up to 10 minutes.
2. Rebooting
3. Reset agps data. Download GPS status app from the play store, reset is on the tools menu.
4. Gpsconf mods. If you are rooted, try installing faster gps app from the play store.
Provide some details and let's see if we can help.

I've always had issues with my GPS locking ever since I've started putting custom roms on my Toroplus Gnex. I'm currently running MMuzzy latest build and my gps will takes several minutes indoors to lock if it ever does where my wife's stock Toroplus Gnex will lock in seconds. Outdoors I can generally get a lock quicker, but it still generally takes a few minutes where her's will take just a few seconds. I'm not sure if it's MMuzzy build, I doubt it as not everyone seems to have the issues I have, or it a built issue between Gnexes. I remember back when I had my HTC Hero certain phones would have GPS issues while others wouldn't; the thought was that depending on where and when the phone was built determined if it would work or not. Either way it's frustrating and there really isn't a solution as I've read that even if I went back to stock others have had continued issues with GPS lock.

That's the problem. The gnex uses assisted gps (agps) which requires a data connection to fetch agps data. You should use the gps status app to automatically download agps data so you don't have to wait for the gps cold start ephemeris data.

You might try playing with gps conf. Try faster gps or swapping the gpsconf file from a stock toroplus ROM. Mmuzzy's builds are aosp, so the conf file probably doesn't have the carrier optimizations. Also, on Toro, I have found that the stock ROM gps drivers work differently from the ones Google publishes to aosp.

Hey guys,
Ever since the ICS update, my GPS has been failing to lock, even when 10+ satellites are visible (according to various GPS utilities).
I've tried all the GPS fixes (external_lna = 0, updating certificates, switching to non-ssl, adding time servers, AGPS reset/download, etc).
I'm trying to determine if this is a hardware thing, or a software thing.
Can anyone post their ROM version, how many satellites are visible, and whether or not you get a fix after one minute (outdoors)?

Which one did you use ? I also am having a horrible time with GPS not locking.. I've tried editing my gps.conf, external lna=0, gps aids etc etc and still can't get this thing to lock after ICS update using UCLH2 Literom 0.6 build by thegreatergood, as well as with 9 satellites located... Iwill lock but as soon as i move my phone I loose it.
I used the gps 3.1 from the site mentioned in the above post but still have no success in locking GPS.
Yeah, I tried the AGPS patch.. no dice. I'm suspecting it's not an AGPS issue at all. A cold, unassisted lock should take no longer than a minute or two; this feels like something firmware or hardware related.
I also had this problem but for longer time, my gps couldnt lock with GB either..It took about 10 min, sometimes even more to lock.. or sometimes just simply didnt lock.. so I tried every possibilities Ive found, and after long weeks of searching and trying millions of useless apps and fix methods,I found this app, called gps doctor:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...edium=organic&utm_term=gps+doctor+google+play
after a little hesitation I gave it a try.. yea i know it costs about 2dollars but it was my last hope and i was about to give up trying, so i really hoped this would work.. and so it did! Now I get a lock within seconds!
sometimes my gps starts to be ****ty again though, but that is when I open the app and press quick fix, that makes some kind of "xtra injection" i guess.. After seconds everything is back to normal for days/weeks and I can actually use navigation and positioning without a problem, like never before

lambgx, what ICS build are you using? When I was using CL9 My GPS works fine... when i've reverted back to that nandroid backup, it seems to be ok ...
I'm going to play with it a bit more to confirm this issue... I've been having some minor issues with the ULH lite rom I've installed so I'm going to bounce back and forth and see if this seems common.
I can post my gps.conf if I find it works.... I'm on Rogers in Canada. My GPS was also working in GB so not sure what your issue may be..

Hrm. Well, spam or not... it actually seems to have worked! I bought the app about an hour ago, but only tried it just now since you posted the warning. Got a lock in about 45 seconds, and warm restarted in under 5! I wasn't able to get a lock after 15 minutes prior to that...
So, could it be simply invalid or stale data gets cached on the GPS chip, and it's simply a matter of purging it? Looks like that might be the case!
I'm running the stock UCHL2 build and LiteKernel v1.0, also on Rogers.
I'll keep testing over the next few days and post my results, but it looks like this fix may have done it!

so far so good, gps locks quick in gmaps... less than 20seconds.
From what i've read you need to keep it installed and run it periodically, i would love to know what it actually does behind the scenes so it could be made free and contribute to the scene.

From what i've read you need to keep it installed and run it periodically, i would love to know what it actually does behind the scenes so it could be made free and contribute to the scene.

2$ is not much when you think of it. I may buy this as well but want to see if JB fixes all our GPS issues first since I will be switching to it once the camera is fixed. I agree if it is only deleting some files we should be able to do this ourselves but it states that it replaces some files with valid data. Here is what they say they do"GPS Doctor works by clearing stale cached values that can mislead your GPS chip as it searches for your location, then injecting the correct values into the chip using data downloaded from NTP and XTRA servers."

Actually, I gotta say it is a very well written app, and appears to do quite a bit. I suspect the GPS problem some of us are seeing on the Glide is endemic across all Android devices (possibly other OSes) too.
I've had this problem on every phone I've ever owned. Some worse than others, obviously. But, the day you buy it, it locks in 5 seconds. Every year seems to add 5 minutes to that lock time. I assumed it was antenna degradation, but maybe it is just a bug in the sirf firmware; it continues to accumulate bad predictive data and never expires it.
I suspect this won't be the last device I use GPS Doctor on, and to say $2 isn't very much is an understatement. :good:
Totally buying this app, but, I'm pretty sure anybody with some coding skills, can take it apart and make it part of the system.
Any takers ? dman ? If you, or anybody can achieve this, $ 10 are waiting on my PayPal account. You can ask dman, I've already donated more than $ 40, and I haven't even downloaded his ROM yet XD
As much as I'd like to see this incorporated into CyanogenMod or something, I also don't want to cut out the developer who worked hard to figure out what this problem is...
I just downloaded/bought it. $2 is cheap. I finally bought Titanium Pro, since I've been using it forever too. Rather than paying someone else to make it free and undermining the work of the original developer, why not support the original developer? Imagine how you might feel if dman was the developer of this and someone from another forum broke it apart and incorporated into their ROM, for free?
Thoughts on the app, though? Wow! It locked my GPS immediately. Sideloaded it on a few other devices I have just to see how it handled... And yeah. 5 seconds and it locked. Just amazing. Removing now, but this thing is totally worth it. $2 well spent!

I totally get your point, but you have to admit that having this feature available for any ROM Developer to put it into his own ROM, would be a major breaktrough for the Android Community, just think about it, GPS lock, in just 5 seconds, whatever devices/ROM you're using, sick !
Conspiracy theory time. So like, what is it about SIRF chipsets that makes them prone to degradation over time? As I mentioned earlier, I've had this problem on countless devices.
It seems like such an obvious problem, solved by either regularly purging stale data, or at least to presenting the user with a reset option.
What hasn't Antenova, Google, or even Samsung resolved this issue? Planned obsolescence? Do they just not acknowledge the issue?
Even after paying for GPS Doctor I'm still having issues locking a signal ... It took about 5 minutes the other day to lock on, while my TomTom was working the entire time guiding my way.
Other times I can lock w/ GPS Status in 24 seconds.
This morning I tried again from a rural area outside of my city (Calgary) and after sitting for 2 mins, no wifi anywhere near, I didn't even FIND more than 1 satellite let alone lock onto a signal.
I've tried using gps doctor, resetting the info re-download agps settings ... nada.
I'm going to flash back to stock GB rogers build sometime in the next couple of days w/ Odin and see if I can get the GPS to lock.
I'll need to do some more reading as I've read there's more than just the gps.conf that are involved in finding the signal (ie certificates etc.).
If someone can summarize which files I should look for if I get it working or point me to the right thread to explain it, it'd be much appreciated.
(and soadzoor my apologies for accusing you of spam, gotta be wary on anything internet these days )
No problem
another suggestion: last time my glide had troubles with even viewing a sattelite, just like yours.. Not even the gps doctor helped, but when I RESTARTED the phone AND used the app again, I got a lock in 20 seconds under clear sky.. if Im indoors, the chances are a lot worse to view sattellites and lock to them.
so u can try restart the phone and then try again, let me know if it helped..
by the way im also thinking of going back to GB, I had less problems with that (less bugs, smoother gameplay), but first I'll try dman's JB. just waiting for a release that camera and physical keyboard work on

Ya I've found that helps too; actually pulling the battery used to help on my old phone. Seems the GPS chip doesn't always power down across reboots.
Also waiting for dman's JB. I think CM will solve so many issues on our device. Can't wait.
Fixed by the new ATT update. FYI.

Hey everyone, got another official rom for you guys.
I've been building for a few weeks now, all running pretty smoothly on the AT&T variant. Hit me up if you guys find any issues with the Sprint build. I don't have one myself, so I am unable to test.Official CM based, so e975 kernel.
Check it out here: http://codefirex.com/index.php?p=/discussion/258/rom-ls970-4-3-cfx-toolchain-4-8-y-codefirexperiment-nightlies
The good news: Data and GPS seem to work right off the bat, across reboots.
The bad news: It seems that I can't send texts. Also, the signal icon in the statusbar never shows any bars (though it does show the 3G icon). It appears as if I have a dead signal 100% of the time, even though I'm able to browse the internet (albeit very slowly) and make calls.
Thanks for your work!

I have weird connection problems with this ROM as well. It always boots up with the wrong phone number so I can't use any cell radio related functions. I sent some logs to Synergye but not sure if they helped.

I'll take a look at the issue this week / weekend. It's probably some stupid mistake, and I should have it fixed soon, I am just not familiar with CDMA at all yet, and don't have a device to test with myself.

Out of curiosity, I just compared sources between CM and cfXe and not really sure what I was looking for, I removed one line from the cfXe sources, built it, and boom, everything is now working:
device/lge/ls970-common/ls970-common.mk
remove line 187, ro.telephony.ril_class=LgeLteRIL \
I'm not entirely sure of the consequences, but I was getting 3G and 4G, and SMS and MMS were sending both over 3G and Wifi. Also, I noticed a dead touch area on the screen, not sure if it is my device only, but the easiest way to get there is to go to settings, and then try to click on bluetooth.
edit: looks like I have a busted digitizer
Anyone mind testing out this build? It looks like it is not quite there from my side, but I figured I may as well have someone test it out to be sure. The issue is that it is using the GSM ril instead of the ls970 specific CDMA ril. If this does not work, I should be able to get another one out real soon that does fix the issue.

First things first. Upon initial setup, the first thing that it asks you to do is to insert the device's SIM card. Obviously that doesn't apply to us CDMA folks. It allows you to skip this step, so I did. after a few seconds the phone connected to sprint and 3G data appears to be working. Signal bars are working. I was able to sign in to my google account. I haven't rebooted because I can't test much right now, but the basics seem to be working on initial boot. Can't test GPS right now. Also can't test SMS right now, apologies.

Testing this build out myself since I also have nothing to do. So far, everything is extremely fast, fluid, and stable! Have working data and everything (But then again, I'm one of the few lucky ones who never had any problems with data ). Gonna test out MMS soon. Only real problem I have with 4.3 AOSP ROMs really is the SMS issue where texts don't send over 160 characters. But I flashed the 4.2.2 messaging apparently, which usually fixes that. So far so good, though! I'm really digging it.

From what I can tell, that "fixed" data, but is still not quite correct. It is most likely just using a generic ril, and not the CDMA RIL that it is supposed to. I am going to do another test build real quick here, then hopefully push the fix before the next nightlies run.
EDIT:
Can someone test out this real quick? I am almost positive this should fix the issue, but I just want to be sure before I push.

Keep getting telephony force close immediately upon booting. I think it was this commit that broke it:

Hey all!
I have an unlocked HTC 10 and the gps lock takes forever to happen and even have to do multiple tries.
I am not sure if this is a common issue or i just got a defective phone.
I am on the latest update of google maps and this issue is very annoying.
Hope someone can shed some light on this!

Sounds defective if your location settings is set to high accuracy. I have GPS lock in seconds via GPS status app.

It takes minutes for the lock. I'll do a factory reset maybe.
Interesting observation : the gps lock happened on gps status app really quick. It'd on google maps it takes forever.

I have no idea which app that toast message is from... but it is not from Google maps. It is some other app.
I have only noticed an issue when in the parking garage at work, understandably since LoS to satellites is impaired. Once I am out of the garage lock happens within 10 seconds.

I am also having this problem on the Sprint HTC 10.
If I turn off LTE and put the phone into CDMA only, GPS locks in seconds. If I leave LTE on, it never finds my location.
I have RUU'd back to stock and reinstalled a mostly stock ROM and am still having problems.
EDIT: OP, this seems to have fixed it for me, or at least improved my GPS performance. I changed the capabilities value to 0x31.
Good luck.
EDIT 2: Nevermind. Above fix doesn't help. As soon as my phone connects to LTE and for as long as it's connected to LTE I have no GPS signal. Switch to CDMA only (force 3G connection) I immediately pick up GPS lock.
Not having much luck finding a solution.
Hey guys!
Thanks for all your inputs. I have initiated a return process. Don't want to deal with such issues, especially from a device this expensive.
