[Q] Missing Driving Mode? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

When I received my G Nexus, it came with yakjuxw 4.0.2. After I received the car dock, I updated it to takju 4.0.4.
Originally the phone had a driving mode feature. I am unsure if that was what it was called, I didn't pay much attention to it prior to having the car dock, except when I accidently set it in this "driving mode" and my phone read aloud an incoming message in a meeting... (Yikes!) I then searched and found the setting to turn reading incoming messages aloud off.
Now that I have the car dock, I would like to use this feature. But I cannot find it. I think this may be a samsung thing that was added to yakjuxw but is not in takju or yakju versions? Can anyone confirm?
I only updated from yakjuxw to takju because I thought the car dock (or desk dock) would not work correctly if I didn't. But maybe I didn't really have to do that. Is 4.0.4 necessary for docks to work correctly?
Any suggestions?

The Galaxy Nexus did not come with a Car Home app, search for one on the Play Store.

Thanks for offering advice, but I don't think that's it. I don't think Car Home (or other car dock apps) read incoming messages out loud? I already have a car dock application; I use Car Home Ultra paid version with takju, and I also had Car Home Ultra installed when I had yakjuxw and the phone read out loud an incoming message (I don't remember if it was a text or an email). If I recall correctly, I was able to turn this off in the phone's setting, not in Car Home Ultra apss settings. There is no setting for it in either the phone or Car Home Ultra that I can find now. Which is why I wonder if this was only in yakjuxw. If anyone still has yakjuxw installed, maybe they can check? I can't think what else it could be.

My bad for not reading the question properly.
Can't find it in my settings too.

While not exactly what you are asking, but vlingo will read out your emails and texts I think.

Thank you, I'll give that a try. I remember trying it once before, but apparently not long enough to remember what it could do!
I also found a paid app that reads emails and lots of free apps to read text. The right app(s) combined with Tasker will do what I want, I think. I don't want to flash back to yakjuxw just for something I think may have been included... it takes too long to set up everything again... I already messed up one thing with the last flash (google wallet w/citibank), so now I'm a little gun shy.

if the sony smartwatch is anything like my motorola motoactv, then the answer button only pops up if you have headphones connected to the watch itself. if no headphones detected, it will default to decline.

It works, but not flawlessly. There's an issue with the OS that can activate talk-back (or parts thereof). It only comes into play if you install some of the third-party notification apps, like Watch It (really good). It can be fixed permanently (in a non-ideal why) or temporarily fixed (less convenient but does not require disabling Engines). You'll know when you've got this issue, because your phone will unexpectedly say to you "the folder is opening..." when you open a folder. It's a minor irritation, but it gets on your nerves very quickly.
The watch itself works very well with my Note 2. Never dropped connection so far, seems to reliably get notifications (I have actually started to turn some off - as I get more than I thought I did!).
I like how it works with my phone. I see the Smartwatch as an evolutionary step to a decent version, which hopefully Sammy or Google will release. And at $100, you can't really go wrong.
Quite a few apps, and one or two of the paid ones are worth it, but mostly the free ones will do you just fine.

Actually i just wanted to know that the apps for smartwatch are perfectly working with Note 2 or not, as i tried the call handler app in smartwatch with note 2, then i find that there is no accept button on smartwatch to accept the call only decline button is there and also find the issue with the music app. So the issue is just with mine or every one facing the same . If you are facing the same issue then is there any way to get rid of this.
Please please please reply.

The SmartWatch is not fully compatible with the Note 2 for the phone answering App. It only works fully with Sony phones. There is no accept-call option in anything other than Sony phones.
Regards.
Considering you probably will want to take the phone out of your pocket before answering it, I don't see that as a real issue. "watch it" (and other programs that use accessibility settings) clashes with some other settings on the phone causing unexpected voice feedback and disabling the continuous input on the stock keyboard.. Other than that its fine..

Yes you can control music: start/stop, last/next, volume up/down.
No, there is no earphone port (use bluetooth headphones - who needs cables?)
I have found the watch controls music flawlessly, albeit not very conveniently in all honesty. Personally, I use the watch more to screen incoming messages and notifications. I don't try to do anything too fancy as it's easier to just use the phone.
On the subject of incompatibility with the TTS engines, there's no doubt this is an inconvenience, but not a great one. What happens is that the Note II (and I think other Android phones) starts talking to you when you don't want it to. For me, the biggy was it speaking out aloud "the folder is open..." (or "...closed") whenever I opened/closed a folder containing Apps. To say the least, it's distracting. If you disable the TTS engines (as I have done, undone, redone etc.) to fix the "folder is open..." issue (which fixes it for me, anyway) then you lose "DRIVING MODE" capability (which I rarely use) at least, and probably other speech apps too. The good news is that Navigation still works fine, even with the Samsung and Google TTS engines disabled. This is clearly not ideal, but only Google can fix it at the OS level, and they seem to be in no hurry at all.
I still think the Sony watch is a good product, as it allows me to receive and screen emails, RSS, tweets and to read them discreetly. It's much less distracting (and much less obvious, e.g. at meetings) than trying to read a phone.
I do still hope Samsung looks at this market though, as they will clean Sony's clock if they ever launch a similar product.

Heh. No it's very common. I know of two fixes: one is TEMPORARY, but does not require you to disable any apps; the other seems to PERMANENTLY fix the problem, but it results in disabling TTS apps. You have to figure out which of these two evils is the lessor:
Temp fix - go to setting-> applications and find the two TTS Aps (Google and Samsung). Clear the cache on both. It temporarily fixes the problem (on my Note II anyway). Bad news: it comes back, seems to be random. I have never figured out why, and now I don;t even try...
Permanent fix (the one I have today). Go to settings->apps and DISABLE said google and Samsung TTS engines. Problem goes away, but you may lose some important functionality (I haven't - Driving Mode is killed, but I don;t use it anyway). You can always re-enable these apps, by going to settings->apps, scrolling all the way to the bottom and re-enabling them. I have tried re-enabling, but this little bug comes right back after a random delay, so now, I just accept it.
Regards,
Andrew
PS - don't blame Samsung, blame google. This is their problem.
PPS - all SonyWatch notification apps seem to trigger this - on my Note II anyway. I tried 'em all.
Had to resurrect this thread, are you guys talking about the smart watch 2 or 1? I am thinking of buying smart watch 2 atm.

[Q] From iPhone to Android Note 2 and my Issues

Good Morning All,
I've been an iPhone user since it first came out and when the iPhone 5 came out I was totally disappointed and decided to make the switch to Andoid. Fell in love with the huge screen on the Note 2, but I've been having a lot of issues and I'm thinking about switching back to an iPhone. I figured I would post here first to see if anyone can shed some light.
Here's my issues:
1. Group Messages: All my friends are on an iPhone and they send out Group Messages frequently. I don't get them. I went on Apple's site and unregistered all my devices and my phone number. Still nothing. I tried different messaging apps like GO SMS Pro. Still nothing.
2. I frequently do not recieve phone calls. My phone will show a missed call even though my phone never rang. Contacted AT&T and we went through a bunch of steps to try and fix it, still nothing. Their solution was to turn it off every 30 minutes and leave it off for 30 minutes and try again. That is unacceptable.
3. The keyboard frequently locks up. When I try to respond to an email, text, or type a web-address the keyboard does not respond. I have to exit the app that i'm in and sometimes reboot it. Not sure what to do there.
4. Lastly, I have a 2012 Honda CRZ with factory stereo that has USB in. It worked perfectly on the iPhone, I could control the music from the stereo and play my iTunes playlist. I was also able to stream Pandora and other streaming music apps through the stereo as well. The car stereo does have a 3.5mm headphone input, but I've tried several cables and I find myself constantly "wiggling" the jack connector at the phone.
Did I just get a bad phone or are these "typical" issues Android/Note 2 users are having?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!!!
I would say it is a bad phone. I have never experienced any of those problems and have had mine since it first came out. Group messaging doesn't work on that version of android, but does on the newest. But there is a wonderful app in the play store called textra sms that handles group messaging very well. I love the app. Not bloated and has good features. It came out not too long ago and is constantly being updated and improved. I highly recommend it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I'll have to try Textra and see what happens. I'm on Android 4.1.2
Any advise on Audio over USB?
I'm sorry... Idk why that wouldn't work. Do you know anyone else with a note 2 that you could test it out. Who knows, it may be a bad phone. And if you don't like the stock keyboard I highly recommend swiftkey. I can't use any phone without it! Hope you get your issues resolved... I know I could never go back to an iPhone after using android .

1. The group messages will not work like it does on iphones...You should still get them however if you have disabled imessages on your old iphone. When I get group messages from iphones, it usually comes across as a lot of mms's. The problem lies with imessage. I would google serach that and see if there was anything you havent done yet.
2. Whoever at ATT told you to power cycle every thirty minutes is an idiot, and didn't want to do their job. This issue probably has to do with ATT service. You may be able to talk to them to perform real t/s and not crap.
3. With your keyboard, is it the stock keyboard or a 3rd party? You may want to go under the app manager and clear the data for the keyboard app. If its stock, try a third party keyboard.
4.With your jack, i just recently had a issue with a high pitched squeal when i used a head phone jack in my car. I had to switch to a different port to fix it. You can also contact the manufacturer of the stereo to see if they can help as well.
It could be just the phone, but i doubt an exchange will help too much.

+1, also you have 14 days buyer's remorse... use it. Ask for a NEW Note 2. Do not let them talk you into getting a refurb. After 14 days you have 1 year replacement warranty so long as it is a manufacturer's defect (do not root your phone unless it wlis working 'flawlessly' or you will be SOL)

[Q] Car dock not starting application

Hey all,
I'm using the iBolt car dock with my S3. I've updated to 4.3 and my S3 would still launched Car Home Ultra until about a week ago. The only correlation I can make is I was playing with the Day Dream feature and since then it wouldn't launch CHU. I tried clearing the default setting on CHU to get the launch application choice again, but it didn't work. I can tell that it is recognizing the dock as I get the sound and the home screen rotates to landscape. I've read that 4.2 remove the home button link to CHU but I didn't think that would change the ability to launch CHU. I've tried using the custom APK to change the home button function but it still goes back to the home screen and not CHU.
Is there anything that someone can think of to try? I have rooted my phone and have access to Root Explorer and SQLite editor, so I can do some troubleshooting if I know where to look.
TIA!
-Shawn
Well, I spent yesterday and last night rebuilding from a factory reset and no difference. Is this even an option anymore for an application to launch when a dock is connected? If someone can tell me that, it would be most helpful.
It's just odd that it worked after the update to 4.3 and then it stopped.

Hi Shawn, I am with iBOLT. Also try to download the new DockMode Control app we just made available on Google Play, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iboltdockmode.carhome&hl=en It simply starts the "DockMode" app like Dock'n Drive, Ulysse Speedometer or the CHU app. If it does not work with our cable, it will work with an NFC tag. Let me know how this works out...

New user needs help!

Hi ALL,
I just got my ZW yesterday and although there was a fair amount of frustration initially I think I'm getting the hang of it. I do have small wrists so its kind of big, but I think its livable. I have a few questions I hoping to get some answers to.
It is paired with an LG Volt running Kit Kat 4.4.2 and the ZW got updates to Android OS 5.1.1.
1. Part of the frustration I had yesterday was in connecting to my phone. I had already installed the Android Wear and Zenwatch apps on my phone and I started both and then turned the ZW on for the first time and it did connect reasonably soon. It updated and then I played with it for a while powering both down to see what would happen. But then I had hard time re-connecting and ultimately had to do a factory reset and the ZW updated again and at least it did connect. Now when I want to use the ZW I power on the phone, start the A-Wear app and then power up the ZW. The last several times it did connect but took a minute or so. My question is this all normal operation for the ZW and have others had to do a factory reset?
2. One thing that really bothered me was that when the ZW was connected all the sounds on the phone (like the sound when you tap on an icon) were very low, almost silent. Even when I powered down the ZW the sounds were still very low. I had to restart the phone to restore the proper sound level. BUT . . . this morning I tried everything out before writing this and the ZW connected and the tapping sounds on the phone are FINE!!! This is not what it was doing yesterday! Has anyone seen this behavior?
3. When an incoming call comes in the ZW displays the caller ID and if its in my contacts their name and picture - this is what I really wanted in a watch. Then you can swipe to the red to send the call to voice mail or swipe to the green to connect the call. Once connected there are three screens: Mic, Speaker and Hang up. Tapping on the Mic draws a line though it and mutes the mic. But tapping the Speaker also draws a line through it but that TURNS ON THE SPEAKER, just the opposite of the Mic. Is this a bug?
4. Lastly, from the clock face, when I swipe to the left the first screen are the apps. The third screen is the Google Now stuff. But the second screen says: No contacts found - Add contacts to contacts app on phone. But I have plenty of contacts in the app on the phone and when a call comes in the ZW correctly shows the called ID info from my contacts. Is there another place I have to enter the contacts on the phone?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me out!!
Gerry
1. I definitely have seen some delay between connecting the Zenwatch and my phone (Zenfone 2), sometimes I have to fully close the Android Wear app and reset the BT connection before it reconnects, usually if I reboot either the watch or phone, or if I separate the pair too far, and the connection is dropped. I did, at one point have to do a system wipe, but it's gotten better over the updates.
2. It might be that your phone is trying to route sounds to the ZW as an audio device (not too sure about this one, since I leave my phone on vibrate at almost all times).
3. The call control is pretty buggy, since it's not Android Wear native, it's an Asus made app. It's kind of weird, if I tap the speaker button, it doesn't reflect it on my phone, but it turns on speaker anyways, and if speaker was already on, it also draws a line through the icon on the watch. Hopefully they fix this in a future update.
4. I believe you need to have your contacts synced with your Google account, because I think incoming calls just read off of what the phone says.
Hi itechnoguy,
Thanks for the input. First off I just wanted to say that I ordered the Zenwatch 2, but not for its new features. My wrist is kind of small and the original ZW was just way to big on it. So I ordered the smaller ZW 2 and I'm hoping it fits better.
As far as my questions:
1. Before I decided to get the ZW 2 and was still playing with the ZW it did seem to connect more reliably. So maybe the ZW 2 will connect even better!
2. I don't know why it did that but the last several times that the ZW connected the phone's sounds were normal!! Strange!
3. Yeah, I kind of figured that.
4. Once I get settled with thee ZW 2 I'll play with Google some more to see if that helps.
Again, thanks very much for your comments.

I have the same problem. But I've gotten answers from several people that the contacts on you phone are NOT the contacts that will show up in the contacts on the watch. It seems that you have to add contacts into Google somewhere and frankly I really haven't looked into it any further. I think if you go into you Gmail account on the web there is some place to enter contacts and perhaps they will then show up on the watch.

Newbie trying to find features

So I've just got a OP3, moving from a Lumia 930 and several years with Microsoft mobile OS's and am trying to find a few answers about my new toy. I've searched Google but can't seem to find the answers I'm looking for.
Here goes, please don't flame me:
1. WP allowed me to automatically set quiet hours so only select contacts could get through and I wasn't bothered by notifications at night. I can't seem to find this option despite several walk throughs, the options listed aren't there. I know I can use the slider but sometimes when you go to bed tired you forget
2. Also looking for driving mode, when connected to Bluetooth the phone would only allow calls and texts to notify to stop distractions from other notifications.
3. Music player randomly opens, bit embarrassing when it fires up in the middle of a meeting
4. Phone screen doesn't always go off when taking a call, though this only seems to happen if I was using an app at the time the call came in.
5. I want to be able to block calls without installing an app, surely this should be a standard feature?
Think that's it currently, still getting my head around how to do things on Android and I'm sure there'll be more questions though hopefully I'll be able to find the answers myself
Thank you in advance
I can give you a few answers / recommendations. First take a look at an app called Silence Premium in the app store. This provides similar functionality to the slider but also allows the function to be time based. For example I have it set to silence all and only allow calls to come through after 11pm. At 6am I have it automatically un-silence all. This way I eliminate all the dings and beeps from Email or texts once I go to bed. The slider still functions normally as well. This should cover your first question. Note the trial version of the app is called Do not Disturb. Not sure why they chose different names for the paid and free versions.
For your second option, I use an app called Tasker to automatically enable an auto-reply to any texts that come in while driving. This feature is automatically enabled and disabled upon connecting to the Bluetooth in the car. Tasker is a pretty powerful app and can do a ton of different things. However it does have a bit of a learning curve and can definitely be intimidating. A similar app exists called Automate that might provide similar functionality. I haven't used it yet so can't really comment.
Hope this helps.
