Hi all,
I have an S-off OG EVO running stock GB 2.3.3. I would like to stay with the stock ROM and be able to run Titanium Backup and be able to create a wifi hot spot.
I had such a configuration on my Optimus S and it worked very well for me.
I have to say that I really love my EVO and I am just missing these features to be perfectly happy.
I flashed a ROM labeled as stock GB rooted, but it was not really the stock ROM I have, for example the ## menus did not work and the screen lock was the regular GB lock, not the sense one. I had to flash back to pure unrooted stock to activate the phone on my line.
Since I have S-off, I can flash any ROM, any suggestion about where to get an actual GB 2.3.3 OTA rooted ROM or if it even exists?
I would go with a different ROM, but reading some of the problems that users have with some functionalities not working, I am concerned, I need a fully functional phone, although I would not mind vanilla GB, if I was sure that everything works perfectly well.
The closest I found is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379, but people seem to have tons of issues that do not exist in the stock ROM.
Any suggestions?
Download the Superuser flashable zip and flash it through recovery. This will root your current non-rooted rom. Then download Titanium Backup and select the problems button. Install busybox from there and you should be able to do what you need without flashing a new rom.
There's a complete guide somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

Thank you for your reply.
So being S-off is enough to gain root? I just have to flash it and be rooted?
I will try as soon as I have a few minutes.
It worked perfectly, thank you!

No problem
I'm glad that you were able to follow my really vague guide. Especially considering I've never done it myself, I just regurgitated what I've heard.

Hey Fellas, I see alot has developed since Zedo's kernel, fantastic to see community so hard at work!
As far for my "question", i was on Zedo's V3, ODIN'd back to stock using this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1273647). (Big ups to Bubby by the way, dude is kickin ASS). However still noticed i have SU & Titanium Backup but kinda pointless since I dont have root.
So since everyone has had some time switching between different stock ones (albeit Deodex or Odex) this is why I ask but whats the best stable stock'd since the one i ODIN'd?
In other words, sitting with stock from Zedo's still with SU/TB & i want to go stock with rooted, what is best comfortable one everyone prefers at the moment?
Hope I didn't make that too foreign for everyone to follow lol <3
Also, worst case scenario, is Bubbys (the one i have currently) the best stock one to go back too if i encounter any problems?

Okay from what I understand, all you want is stock and rooted, correct?
In the development forums, Zedo released a stock with root and cwm. That'll give you exactly what you want.
I know it sounds like shameless self promotion, but I just released 2 roms (deodex and odex) that are stock and rooted with busybox and are also running bubby's kernel (so there's cwm recovery), found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284511
Either way you'll end up with a stock rom and root with recovery and they're both very stable and easy to use I hope this helped.
**edit**
whoops you weren't rooted. my bad lol. Okay first option: use zedo's stock kernel v1. This gives you root + recovery with a stock kernel on a stock rom.
second option, flash one of the rooted kernels then flash my rom. It'll give you root and busybox (through my rom) and recovery (via bubby's kernel).
Both ways get you stock + recovery + root + stock kernel. hope i helped

stand up guy!
Hi all, I've been reading a lot of threads around here about safely flashing our phone. I'd like to verify somethings before I go around flashing things.
It is my understanding that its ok to go from any rom to any rom using sfhubs odin oneclick methods. Is this correct?
It is also my understanding that I can flash any rom (unless otherwise stated) from CWM recovery safely if I am back to EL26+CWM using ODIN.
I have some confusion about this. Currently I am on a stock EL29 unrooted build, if I want to flash an ICS rom would I flash the EL26+CWM tar via ODIN and then use CWM to wipe and flash ICS? Is it also required that I flash an applicable kernel along with the rom?
Also I have never used odin before. Do I need to install this program from somewhere first before I can flash things?
Do I need to root my existing EL29 setup before I can flash the EL26+CWM tar?
Sorry for the huge number of noob questions, I just don't want to take chances with my phone. I'm an HTC guy and things seem to be done very very differently there. I'm very interested in trying the upcoming date to the Blend ICS "The Goodness" rom.

1. Yes as long ad you get into download mode
2. Yes
3. Yes but usually roms come with a kernel that works already, check OP for each
4. Yes get either mobile Odin from the market or get it on ur PC (best to have both)
5. Yes you have to be rooted to flash anything

The best advice I can give you is to look up qbking77 on youtube. He has step by step how to videos on rooting and flashing your E4GT.
Start here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7pWjmKCsoc&feature=plcp
He has a link in the description on how to add CWM
Ill tell ya right now I would not recommend flashing an ICS rom it is soo buggy I hate it! I just installed the tablet one I forget what it is called but nothing but force closes even when ya aint doing anything it will just force close on ya. Stick with gingerbread untill there is a final release for ics trust me. Way to buggy right now!
I must agree with RB!
I would not mess with ICS if you are new to this phone (and even some that are not ). If you really like your phone, I would recommend trying out the many Gingerbread roms for a while. It is a much safer and far more stabile learning platform than ICS.
As far as flashing ICS I would check out one of the official leaked builds before trying out a custom ROM. I've noticed that some people seem to have different problems even though we all have the same phone. The changes from GB to ICS were enough to drive me nuts sometimes, but I've been using the leaked builds with minimal problems for the last few weeks. The newest one is FE10 and is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1648045
I have to say I take back what I said I was getting all those force closes but then I did another factory data reset and now it is running smooth and I am LOVING ICS!!! You should check out the Hydra Rom by team Venum it is soo sick! It makes your phone like a tablet!!!
True you can use either Odin or Mobile Odin (and it is best to have both). But I find Mobile Odin much more convenient. I always keep an the EL26+CWM tar and an ICS Tar (Kernals) on my phone at all times. It is much safer to do anything on the EL26 kernal such as wiping, flashing, nanding, and etc. Even if you are on an ICS rom you can Mobile Odin to the EL26 kernal flash whatever you want, and lastly flash back to an ICS kernal and reboot. That is about as safe as you can be. Like the other posters said though try out some GB roms first there are many great developers, and these roms generally have far less risk associated with them. I am currently running Epic Venum Rom and it is great. Happy flashing!
Yea ya see sometimes when people ask for opinions on here I say try it yourself because its different for everyone. My battery life compared to yours and my user experience compared to yours. I am on Codename and have 0 issues and honestly dont even need an upgrade. I could rock this ICS till my next phone.
Hey OP do yourself a favor read yo ass off up in here and please please please follow directions to the "t" and just try out a few roms

LMAO RB. You're really gonna confuse the guy now.
Thanks for all the informative responses all. I think I mostly have this down now.
I rooted my stock build with sfhub's odin OC, then used sfhub's autorooting utility to flash EL26+CWM. Got into CWM and wiped everything a few times and then flashed Blu Kuban ICS.
Now that I tried this, if I want to try a different rom should I just Odin OC back to my rooted EL29 build and repeat the process or would it suffice to just use the autorooting utility, flash EL26+CWM and then flash my new rom?
Can anyone recommend me an ICS rom that is fairly similar to a stock ICS experience? It doesn't have to be CM9 or AOKP. I'm just tired of Samsung's cartoony icons and themes. "The goodness" seemed interesting.
Also what is the best Gingerbread rom around here in case I decide to stick to that? Any that are themed like ICS?
Also if I wanted to, I could go from my blu kuban ICS rom straight to FE10 using the Odin OC safely right?

Thanks for the help all. I settled on tFE10_v0.1.0, a tweaked version of the FE10 leak. It's also skinned to look like stock ICS and I'm using it with the ICS launcher instead of TW.
Smooth, stable and good battery life so far. I'm quite happy with it.

Odin OC back to EL29. It is HIGHLY recommended that you not flash GB kernels on ICS roms, so flashing EL26 from ICS is not ideal. Insofar as rom i was on goodness until just recently, which is great, but recently switched to AOKP build 35, which is AMAZING

I would just flash el26+cwm from mobile odin/odin and boot into recovery. Once there just wipe and flash like you did for Blu Kuban. You don't have to go back to GB ROM, just need el26+cwm. As stated above it is unsafe to flash to el26+cwm using ICS recovery, but is safe to Odin/Mobile Odin to it. I always have stockel26cwm.tar, an AOSP kernel, a stock ICS kernel, and whatever ROMs I'm currently using. I also always have Mobile Odin and Root Explorer installed.

I would definitely look into the HyDrA rom this rom is soo sick I cant even explain it! You need to actually use it to appreciate it. I knew as soon as I saw the review video by qbking I had to have it. Ill post a link for the review.

Wow you just saved me a whole lot of time. This whole time I was under the impression you had to odin back to Gingerbread rooted, reinstall CWM before flashing another ICS rom. I never knew you just needed the el26 kernal! Thank you! Quick question though what slot do you put the kernal in the PDA?
Here's a direct link to the stock el26+cwm: http://db.tt/0QJkleJR
I believe you use PDA slot. I use Mobile Odin as I'm always at work and never near a computer. I do believe there is a free lite version on these forums somewhere or its $4.99 on Play Store, but it is a huge time saver as I flash a new ROM several times a week at least(currently addicted to HyDrA).
Sent on HyDrA using Tapatalk 2
thanks kill, i was odin OC back to EL29 before each flash, i will adopt your method going forward, i should have realized this a long time ago...
No problem. Just trying to save you some time/effort. One more thing though since I don't think it was ever mentioned. You should always verify the md5 checksum before flashing anything. There are free apps on the Play store to check with and most developers post a checksum by there downloads.

ok, first off i bought a at&t galaxy s3 sgh-i747. i have it factory unlocked to work with my carrier. here is the build info
model: samsung-sgh-i747
android version: 4.04
baseband version: i747uclg1
kernel: 3.08-599060-user
build number: imm76d.i747ucalg1
i rooted it on my own (first timer) with clockwork recovery, i have superuser. i also have some other recommended rooted apps, rom manager, titanium backup, busy box, metmorph. all these i am in the early stages of even understanding them.
so i went through at first and like ics. i just wanted it a little faster, i wanted to overclock it, got what i thought i needed, flashed the kernel i believe with odin, and was stuck at the samsung logo, it would show for a min and go away, then nothing, so luckily i found the stock kernal, flashed it back to stock. everything is cherrry. so today, i was looking into custom roms, found a couple. followed all instructions, flashed with clockwork recovery, while loading, it aborted and gave me a status 7 error. i restored my phone with recovery back to normal. tried with another rom with clockwork, same error. it aborts.
honestly what do i need to do to 1. install a kernel 2. safley install a stable rom (maybe just jelly bean) 3. be happy.

I recommend you look around the forums (searching thoroughly or threads with stickies) as there are already quite a few threads with reliable information about properly flashing Kernels and ROMs.
I CAN however tell you that to install a Kernel you usually need to make sure it's compatible with whichever ROM you installed, for example there is the KT747 with one version for Stock Based ROMs and another for AOSP roms etc.
Most Jelly Bean ROMs are still buggy but plenty are stable enough to use as daily driver, I personally recommend CyanogenMod 10 or AOKP (AOSP based ROMs). For Stock based ROMs in Jelly Bean I recommend Black Jelly, and Drew Garen Sprint ports. As for the Error you're getting when flashing, make sure you have the latest version of ClockWorkMod Recovery or at least one of the latest ones, as most of the newer ROMs require them. (I have version 6.0.1.2)
Here are some links to the above mentioned ROMs,
CyanogenMod 10 (Jelly Bean): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778270
AOKP (Jelly Bean): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949025
Black Jelly (Jelly Bean and ICS, Based on Stock): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1883845
Drew Garens ROM (Jelly Bean Based on Stock): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869300
The popular KT747 Kernel (With Overclock and Undervolting support): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756776
Be sure to download the right one that corresponds to your ROM type though.
I hope this helps.

well here is the name of the recovery i used to root my phone: RecoveryGalaxyS3USCanada
i dont know what version as it didnt tell me. i went onto youtube and followed a set of instructions to root my s3. as far as i know i used the right one. i used root checker to do it.
i honestly really have no patience, and its my own fault most of the times, usually if someone tells me it works then i do it. but sometimes like this one, it didnt work. id like to upgrade whatever i can.
are there any good ice cream sandwhich based roms that i can use??

Another ROM Stock Based ICS I forgot to mention is KyanROM. That was the first one I flashed on my GS3 and I immediately loved it. It has been thus far the most stable and nice looking ICS room I have used. Perhaps you can give it a try! I believe its on the Android Development (Not to be confused with ORIGINAL Android Development) section of this phones forum.

soo ill admit it....i dont know what im doing, which is hard for a man to do. i am a begniner at this. so far....i believe i didnt harm my phone. whta ive done thusfar...flashed wanamlite rom. ran fine. i was told that it was a intl version only. i went and downloaded another rom, blackcream, another ics based rom. i flashed this over wanam lite. without a wipe. download succesfull. now my phone info says:
model: samsung-sgh-i747
android version: 4.0.4
baseband: i747uclg1
kernel: 3.0.8-985684-user
build number: blackcream v .1a
wanamlite rom:vlalh1 v1.3
so after thinking about all this modifications, and prolly screw ups. i wanted to go back to stock...which i backed up, only had root and root apps...stock g3. i went to restore it, it have a md5 mismatch. cannot restore back to stock!!! i think my build is unstable. i need help and i will listen. i am a step by step person. please help.
If anyone else who reads this is anything like me, they will do what i'm about to do and just forget i even saw this thread. You have repeatedly asked for help, which has been given, and then you proceed to just do whatever. Good luck with the phone, i suppose you will learn one way or the other.

wow. you honestly think i am the only one to have had this issue. ive already admitted to being a little overly stubborn. it is people like me that support this forum. it wasnt that ive ignored the advice. i just didnt do it properly. and ive had no advice yet..but what im doing is wrong. im trying to understand how this whole flashing thing works, dont quite understand the instructions, do my best. now ive ran into a wall .
so if people are anything like YOU, then sure, pass this thread up and forget about it. if you are not, and really want to help a fellow andriod lover, my build is in above thread. i dont know if its correct. im not looking for YOUR WRONG, im looking for help, and what and where to go from here. :good:

Ok..thanks for the pic. How the hell you were able to run international rom ...crazy. Anywho, you said you tried restore your "stock" backup you made. At least you made one! Good job on that, but now you're getting a MD5 error? That happened to me to a while back. After searching, I came across this thread. I did the suggested code and my backup was fixed. That may be something to look into. You will need to use terminal emulator to do this. (it's free in the market)

If you don't feel comfortable doing that...then download the stock rom from here..it WILL take a while to download..be patient. Once downloaded flash it using ODIN...

Error 7 means you're trying to flash leaked JB version on top of a ROOTED device. The leaked version ONLY works on NON-ROOTED LH1 version.
If you want to try JB, I will recommend trying (CM10 M2 build). Once you're comfortable, then update to the nightly build then.
CM10 thread is here
I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S2. Rooted it withe hercules tar kernel on Android 2.3. When I upgraded to JB the kernel no longer worked (couldn't root). I tried flashing Cyangoen 10.0 and 9.0 but neither wokred (Waited 20 minutes and nothing). Is there a kernel I need to flash with ODIN?
Also, looking for a good place to learn abot kernels in genral.
Many thanks.

Kernel is causing the problem. Flash only kernel which is made for specific rom/android version. follow this if you want to flash via Odin. I recommend you to install CWM because its easy, safe and time saving.
Installed CWM Recovery, tried to flash Cyanogen 9...now it keeps rebooting back into CWM...can't access the Recovery menu. I downloaded the updated kernel. How do I get it flashed?
I was able to connect via ODIN. Can't get recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.1-hercules.tar to flash.
restart your computer log back in and use a different USB port and make sure you have all the DRIVERS for the phone plug it in flash the ODIN CWM file then you should flash an ICS ROM then flash JB to avoid any hiccups 2.3.4 is a big jump to JB might be giving you errors and you are rooted correct ?
Thank you. Yes I'm rooted an runnning smoothly with Juggernaut ROM for now. Want to change to Cyanogen 9.0. I'll flash the ODIN CWM file as you recommend. Where can I find a good ICS ROM and JB? Didn't know the jump from 2.3.4 to JB would be so big.
Many thanks.
what do you prefer the more stocky looking approach or you into AOKP/CM if you like stock then anything from PTMR and JAMISON904 are on point and very stable if you want some options and custom stuff look into the CM/AOKP around here in the development forums since you are rooted i would download a nice ICS you wont be on it long so doesnt matter lol and then finally jump ship to JB give it time for the battery to settle in becuase there was nothin like GB as far as the battery life goes this one guy who has amazing work and dedication http://goo.im/devs/Cl3Kener anything on there will do you justice when you get to the JB stage good luck and happy flashing!!
C13Kener DOES have some amazing stuff. Thanks. I see that he has a nice ICS stock ROM (Samsung-Stock-4.1.2-Tiberius-Kernel-1.1.zip). Can I just flash that from recovery or do I need to flash a new kernel via ODIN beforehand? Apprecaite your patience and help.

I think there is some confusion here. A ROM is not the same thing as a kernel.
I think thats where I'm having trouble. I have an older kernel (recovery-cwm-hercules.tar) and need to upgrade it before I can flash an ICS ROM. Don't know where to find kernels for the ROMS I want to flash. I thought some ROMs came with the kernel embedded in their zipfile, but finding thats not the case. ODIN is fairly easy to use, but I don't know where to find the right kernels for ROMs like Cyanogen.

Recovery is a tool used to flash ROMs and do backups.
TWRP and CWM are recoveries.
ROMs are the operating system of the phone. They come with a kernel. The kernel is what boots the phone into the OS. You can flash a different kernel if it matches the type of ROM you are on. I hope that clears up some of the confusion.
