[Q] ics official update question - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

when i bought my phone it came with beastmod room on it.. my question is what i need to do to update to ics official update from tmobile ... do u have to unrrot and bo back to GBstock or can i update from beastmod to ics
thanks in advance

You can download the stock ICS ROM here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705565 and use Odin to flash ICS. I would backup your files and do a SuperWipe first though.

Depends on what you want. Do you want to go stock unrooted? If so, download the .tar file in the dev thread and flash using Odin. You can then follow the root instructions to re-root if you so desire.
Or, you could always flash one of the stock rooted roms. I think Mr. X has one.

[1.5Qs] Rooted /stock ROM and http://bit.ly/Pl8hMb

If already rooted the stock ROM on a new TMo S3 with the first ODIN-based solution posted (CM recovery), can I use the ROM manager to update the newly released TMo update via stock ODIN flashable ROM with root injected into the system image - TMO T999UVALH2, without having to go through all the steps with ODIN, ...
If the ROM manager is not to be used for root66_TMO_T999UVALH2.tar, then are the steps provided in the link above still useable, even for previously rooted S3?
[OT] After having rooted the phone, checking the flash counter I found it to be 3. Any idea why?
Root66 version is a tar file so u have to update via Odin. Also u need to be on stock recovery not cwm.

Thank you for the follow-up. Although I am done with the upgrade via the easiest path: Kies to be able to install the latest official OTA-released -> then re-root using the original link I sent, I am a little confused about your last statement: the root66 I have is inclusive of the UVALH2, which is the latest official version, in my understanding. I found a reference to an UVALH3 (supposedly JB related), but that is not what Samsung / TMo delivered OTA lately, and I don't think that's what you meant?!?

[Q] Flashing back to stock for a clean official At&t jellybean update

I just flashed my at&t GS3 to Cyanogens Cm10 m2 using clockworkmod and am wondering what the procedure to flash back to stock is, so as to receive the official JB update from at&t whenever that may be.
I made a back up of my stock rom in clockworkmod but what if a user did not make a backup of the stock rom?
Thanks

The following thread has a section that explains with YouTube video demonstrations how to unroot and return to stock ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728824
I am not entirely sure if I followed that particular instructions video or another, but in summary I downloaded the Stock ICS ROM which can be found in a thread somewhere around here in XDA, then I downloaded ODIN (also can be found on XDA) and used it to flash the Stock ICS ROM through it after having booted the phone into Download Mode and connected it. Check the thread and see if the instructions are similar to what I just described.
I know with my last phone (skyrocket aka i727) you can oden the stock firmware from sammobile with original recovery without triggering the flash counter.
Does this work with the s3?

Yes as long as it is the OEM rom.

ODIN is you best friend in these circumstances:
Then the stock LI3 update:
And Drivers if you dont have them:
and just follow this tut:
http://theunlockr.com/2012/07/28/how-to-unroot-sprint-samsung-galaxy-s3/
and you should be back to square one.
Oh, and there is apparently an issue with ODIN fashing modem higher than LEN.
EDIT: You can install a custom recovery to flash the LI3 modem.
I can help you with that also. Let me know if you have any problems.
EDIT #2: (I keep remebering stuff) If you have a custom recovery you can skip all that jazz and just flash LI3 this way:

Oh well in that case just follow the steps in the tut i recommended. Itll take you back to stock. You'll need the stock recovery installed to update also, so if you have a custom installed just flash the stock recovery with ODIN from this thread along with the stock rom. (recovery is at the bottom of the OP)
after the install and your phone boots you should get the prompt to update

I second that with one thing changed. Forget the ota from sprint. Too many reasons to fail. Go back to ics like suggested but keep cwm/twrp. And flash this instead
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390135922294523494 update with system checks removed. Flash in twrp/cwm
Just my $.02

Must have missed something - forcing updates?

All this time, whenever an OTA update is available, I have been unrooting my phone, returning back to stock, allowing the OTA update to run, then applying my root back. I have to think there's an easier way than that to allow my phone to update from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2. All I have is root and CWM, is there a stock 4.1.2 file that I am supposed to be flashing instead of my previous painstaking ways?

Checkout the android development section. There are Odin and zip flashable stock rooted updates you can use which are ever so much easier than unrooting and rooting again.

Just make sure that when you flash the LJ7 zip, you flash the following files IN ADDITION TO THE ROM
1. Team Epic Root from Recovery
2. Custom Recovery - download one of the recoveries found in the OP in billiard's thread. I'm a big fan of TWRP, but to each their own
If you just flash the zip, then all you're going to do is return your phone to stock with the stock recovery image.
Happy flashing!!!!

Going back to rooted stock jellybean ROM from CM10.1

I wish to return to a rooted stock JB ROM from CM10.1 . CM10.1 is too buggy for me, and CM10 had one bluetooth bug in the final release that was kind of a game killer for me. I'd like to go back to stock JB but keep my custom recovery. The only files I've found for stock jellybean are full stock in that they'll flash over my recovery as well as my system. Does anyone know where I can find a root stock image that will let me flash just the system and keep my recovery like any other rom, so that I can flash back to CM10.1 when it is more stable. PS I am also on Linux and do not regularly have access to a windows machine so I do not have access to Odin, or Kies.
after you flash to stock just flash a recovery, that's what i've done.
also, this is the wrong section and you should search first.

I searched and found only "One click" stock roms, and the "Fully Stock" roms. Neither of which solve my problem. Did you even read the portion of my post where I say I don't have access to Odin, or Kies or any of that? My only option for flashing is CWM. And I'm not sure how well overwritting CWM while CWM is flashing would work, but I don't think it would go well.

find a cwm flashable zip of a stock rom. it doesn't need to be a current version. flash that. then find the cwm flashable ota zips and flash those. you've retained root, and cwm. i have done this process as well.
i'd link you to the threads you need but i'm on my phone and it's difficult to find this way.
edit: one of the otas is here. i haven't found anything about updating to jelly bean, though. i know there's a tutorial somewhere about making cwm flashable zips, i might try making one for you after i get my sister to sleep.

go to this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28019751&postcount=1
find the appropriate version for your carrier and flash via your recovery. its pre-rooted and cwm/twrp flashable, no odin or PC needed.
