Battery overheating a lot (CDMA version)

My battery seem to overheat alot,its even uncomfortable to hold up to my face sometimes. Is this normal? The back gets very hot two.

My GN seems to get ridiculously hot pretty often for NO reason. Up around the camera is usually where the heat is focused.

Yup around the camera is where it happens to me too. It usually only happens when I stream Google Music or Slacker

Just browsing? That can't be good. Are you rooted? If so, how high do you got your phone over clocked? Maybe you also may have too many processes opened

Most LTE devices heat up under browsing. Its not the battery that gets hot.
Also, I cannot think of a single phone I have had on Verizon that did not get warm during extended calls.

mine heats up a lot also. After talking or browsing for a while it does get warm.

What's your LTE signal strength? If you only have a bar or so, it's been my experience that the phone will heat up trying to keep the connection. At work, I've had to turn off LTE in order to keep the phone cool and save the battery.

Two reasons why that area gets hot:
1) LTE antenna
2) SoC (CPU/GPU)
Both are in the top of the phone, away from the battery. If you're taxing either the CPU or your data connection, it will heat up. As long as your battery isn't getting hot (heat increases the decay rate in lithium-based batteries) you're fine. Silicon can take a lot more heat than your hand can without sustaining damage.

I have Battery Monitor Widget installed, and it has been enlightening. Here are my observations, using the charger that came with the phone:
The following behaviors happen on the stock ROM (using the Franco Kernel), CM9, and BlackIce:
If I am on WiFi and charging, it charges quickly, and the battery temperature reported by the app stays within the default limit (45C).
If I am on 3G, and on the charger (whether using the phone for anything or not!), the app shows the battery temp rising quickly, the charge rate drops to zero. The battery is no more than 35C based on my best guess when touching it, HOWEVER the area around the camera is very warm I (where the phone radios are). If I unplug the charger for a minute or two, the temp drops, and plugging back in will start charging again, for a short time, until it heats up again.
Underclocking seems to help this issue, as I discovered, a short while ago (playing with the BlackIce ROM, today), and I will update, once I play with it some more. This said, my suspicion is that the processor heating up is the issue, and NOT the battery, though Battery Monitor Widget claims the battery is overheating. Throttling the processor should help. Underclocking and undervolting BOTH, should help even more, I bet.

It's normal for LTE devices to warm up during extended/heavy use. It's not bad for the device unless you hear a pop or smell burning.

It IS, however, a problem, if your device is getting warm enough that it ceases charging itself, which has been my experience.
Imagine this scenario: Your phone is below 15% charge, and you plug it in, hoping to be able to get through the day. It charges for five or maybe ten minutes, then you see the battery level start to DROP, rather than rise. (and forget charging, in the car, while you use navigation, or play music, of both) This is what is happening with mine.
The Battery Monitor Widget says that the battery is overheating, when, in fact this seems to be processor and radio related, since it only happens on 3G (and presumably LTE, though I haven't verified it) and only when allowed to operate at a normal clock speed on the CPU--forget overclocking, that worsens the issue, too, and all of this happens, even when the device is sitting idle.
This happened to me on both the FD01 and FD02 radios (I didn't use FC12 long enough matter), so I suspect that we can rule out the radio.
Reiterating, this happens on the stock ROM (with Franco Kernel), and both CM9 and BlackIce, with their respective kernels that they are packaged with. This begs the question of whether it is a problem with the process that monitors the battery charging using up more CPU than it seems necessary for such a mundane task,
Everything else on this phone works wonderfully, so I don't believe that I have a bad device. I should not have to UNDERCLOCK such a high tech device, so that i can charge it effectively when it is sitting idle.
Any thoughts on this? Anyone else have these issues?

Charging Temperature

What temp does everyone's phone at? I recently got a new cable and i was charging at around 37C-38C the phone felt pretty warm at that point too, and the estimated charge time was practically cut in half from when I used my old charger. I wanna say my old charging temp was maybe 34C.
I know hotter is worse, and the slower the charge is better, but how much worse would it be at that little temp difference?

Well, this temperature shouldn't be a problem, as the cpu temp is getting mostly around 55C and I must say that it's a great device in terms of heating.
The whole metal body is getting warm, but only one spot like in the other phones, so you should care about the temperature.
Just check if m8 supports fast charge, but I think it does.
Please keep in mind that processor in lg g2 is reaching even to 70C, so below 40 it isn't so much.

Notification light stays on when screen on, until notifications looked at.

HI all,
Here's the deal.....coming from a Sony Xperia S after 3 years loved that phone ....i bought the P8000, i know a good bit about android and I'm very happy with the phone so far,,,,just have it two days rooted and custom Rom already...
One thing so far that annoys me is the notification light staying on (breathing) until the notification is looked at...when your spending half hour chatting the ladies its annoying......now the xperia s the notification light would turn off as soon as screen comes on ...makes sense because the notifications are on the bar anyway...
Is there any solution to this? App..software or execute script at boot?
If there is a solution i will write something to make the light breath brighter!
TIP:
The phone will charge at its fastest rate when totally left alone, because of heat generation from charging..... and if the phone being used at the same time, the charge current mA will drop in ratio to battery temperature rise, it is regulated to protect the battery from over heating and possible explode!
Change your cpu governor to on demand from interactive saves a bit more battery.

Question Heating up from basic usage

Is it normal for this device to heat up from basic usage (such as browsering and social media).
By heat I do not mean overheating but it does make the hand feel quite warm.
This worries me alot since I get annoyed by phones who get hot with basic usage.
Would this be because of the sd870 chip?

For me it does warm up a little bit during normal use but it's way better than my previous phones, idk maybe my standards of phone temperature is different than y'all. And if it was running a SD888 it would be even worse.

I think mayb the issue is me comparing it to a snapdragon 730g

This was my concern also but in my case hearing was mostly during charging. I replaced the device and so far things are a tad bit better

Charging especially fast charging produce heat.
Charging is an electrochemical reaction that requires a certain amount of heat to charge properly. Oddly Li charging is a mildly endothermic reaction but resistive elements in the cell produce much more heat than is absorbed.
♤Do not use phone while charging as it will skew the charging curve.
♤Listeners to music (no internet streaming) on bt with screen off is generally ok.
Best start temperature for fast charging is 82°F or higher (85-90°F seems optimum on my N10+).
Do not let battery temperature exceed about 101°F while charging, cool as needed.
♤I use a fan and/or a damp microfiber cloth to keep it cool, works well.
Li plating will permanently degrade your battery and can cause outright failures.
Never charge a Li polymer that is near freezing temperatures.
Charging below 72°F or in high temperatures (exact value unknown, some say >140°F but this may not apply to Li polymer) My Note 10+ will stop charging at about 102°F so hence the 100°F limit. In any case temperatures higher than 90°F aren't needed for fast/optimum charging and only shorten the lifespan of the battery.

Nope, miui is chock full of bloatware and make these phone warm up even some basic task. Tried several custom room in our forum, no heat up at all

I think it has to do since its summer too, debloated through but it still gets warm using social if I'm outside or if its under the sun.
From my logic this has 100% to do with a higher end cpu since as I said my sister samsung a71 does not do that.
Mostly worried that the xiomi build quality is **** that's why I asked

Use manual brightness control. Try to avoid going over 50%... and don't use in direct sunlight. High screen brightness increases current drain/heat a noticeable amount.

You're on to something when it comes to brightness... Newer panels that are being used in the latest Chinese devices all have very high sustained brightness. Which is nice and all but no1 had considered how that will play in combination with the newest chips,
If you compare F2 and F3 the earlier model only had sustained brightness of 500cd/m2 whereas the newer model can sustain 900cd/m2 of brightness - that's a huge difference
Then what about chips? Both snapdragon 888 and 870 are dumpster fires ( Even the dimensity chips ) , while the performance gain is insane compared to last gen so is the heat output... And sadly even the gaming devices with cooling fans struggle to keep the chips from throttling. Take black magic 6 pro for a shameless example (snap 888), it reaches upwards of 55C on the phone body itself during benchmarking with no signs or intention for throttling down to save your hands- that itself should be illegal but no1 ****ing cares since how else are they gonna reach those benchmark numbers.... ( 54C can cause full thickness burns in a matter of 30 seconds or so )
I don't have poco f3 to check but from looking at stress tests on YouTube you can see that they are much more conservative when it comes to heat. It reaches only 42C during benchmarking then starts to throttle down and basically hovers around that temp 42C-44C.
The chips are already insanely good when it comes to performance but the cooling is pacing behind... So yeah it's pretty normal that your device is getting hot - so is every other device on the flagship market rn. Most you can do to solve that would be in this order > Get a peltier cooling device like blackshark fun cooler pro > Lower the brightness to what's usable for you and hope it's enough to somewhat delay the throttling > The last one would be messing with the phone itself like downclocking it or lowering the voltage. It's a cat and mouse game , the throttling will come eventually , the only way out I see would be the first option or the last one if you're capable enough to mess with that and are lucky enough to get a chip that undervolts nicely.

Cooling?
Simply use a damp microfiber cloth.

Question Thermal throttling

After 2 days of trial and error, it's thermal throttling due to battery temp.
It hits 96.20f on the battery and goes from 2.8mah at 15w to 8-900mah at 6w
Full charge speed comes back as soon as it's under 94f
This is something I never dealt with with my OnePlus phones....
6000mah always, no issues 40 minutes to full..
With my testing, I've found that,
While charging
Power saving mode with CPU throttle, screen rate throttle, Bluetooth off doesn't help keep it from throttling...
Charging, I can play a YouTube video slid to the side off the screen and browse the internet and after a good 10 minutes or so it's bouncing in and out of fast charging
Playing a game while charging get me around 400mah charging lol
Takes 10 minutes for a single percent when gaming when it gets up in temps
I'm a business owner and a heavy user when I'm using it.
I atleast now understand how it works and what the limits are.
Brightness is half way and on auto.
I would be fine with it getting a bit warmer to keep the fast charging going for sure...
Now I set it in front of the AC if I need some quick charging lol
Slight edit.. it even throttles charging when closed and not being used...

You telling me this phone I paid almost 2 grand for throttles like a baby after a little light use? I noticed today that Enhanced processing has been removed and the option to change the screens resolution has also been removed. I swear my note 20 ultra still kicks this phones butt

It's give or take, it doesn't like charging,
I was playing genshin impact when it got warm and dead lol, but when charging it's straddling the throttle on and off if your using it for sure, download battery charging monitor pro and watch for yourself
She games well I love it, I'm sure I'll be able to manage it, but just coming from a one plus it's mehh

Samsung has limited the charging speed while its in use since their old models blasted some time ago left and right. That is the reason samsung no longer gives faster charging speeds like other brands. We are stuck with 25w charging plus slow charging while using the mobile
It only hits full speed when the screen is off

Incorrect, I can take a screen recording. If the batter stays below 96f it won't throttle.
Like I said my fix is to put the phone in front of my ac for a minute flat for like 15 minutes of play while charging at full speed.
It has nothing to do with the screen being awake.. it's all on the battery temp.
I tested it by putting my phone in front of the AC when warmed up and as soon as it drops below 94 it's back to full speed.
Yes it's Samsung, but they will learn someday when other phone companies start pushing into the US like OnePlus has

pushing a battery thats charging full power is asking for a fire to happen. This is EXACTLY why Samsung and other manufacturers put these safety measures into play. Users think they know better when they don't and create safety hazards. Like dude please learn basics about batteries before you start a fire.

For starters, I came from a one plus with 2x the charging speeds. What makes them so special to have it down?
And on top of that, I deal with lithium polymer batteries on a daily basis. Owning rc cars I've handled 100s of those "house burning down" batteries.
The phone doesn't even get warm.
I'm sorry your just used to following Samsung and what they say is the fastest standard for something lol

I understood those limitations are for battery life. But you can be unhappy about it.
That's understandable and personally I don't care if the charging speed is not blazingly fast.
