Utmost help needed please.

Sorry for being noobish, just got a nexus, UK and it's on 4.0.1, been reading a lot, and very much overwhelmind, now, coming from my galaxy s2, which, I had been used to flashing and routing daily. I managed to use the toolkit, to root my phone, smashing app, will definitely donate, to the dev, as i managed to root, in pretty much 5mins. My problem is, whats the best route, to follow, in order for me to have the latest stock 4.0.4, because I have read a lot of stuff, so now muddled as to what path to take. Is it a matter, of just downloading the official rom, in the general section, and flashing it via custom recovery, sorry for the noobish questions, it's been a long day, trying to get to know the phone, am sure, if someone can help me from here, all be fine. I also tried to seek for an update, under about, but phone says am on latest firmware, which is 4.0.1,so appreciate your guidance please.

Phew cheers buddy, haven't tried this yet, as at work, will give it a short when I get home, anything easier than this please, as i just have a forbia for anything called adb please? Also, don't understand why my device is still on 4. 0. 1, been hitting the update button continously with no luck, but prepared to use other means, as suggested above, to get the device updated. Thanks again in advance.

You CAN flash factory images through the toolkit you know. You can download them at Google, put them in the correct subfolder of the GNEX toolkit folder and flash away. In order to do that you do have to have an unlocked bootloader and you will loose your root. Unlocking the bootloader will loose all your data (including under the SDCARD folder (so everything you stored will be gone)!. Rooting can be done again through the toolkit...
Or you can download a different flashable zip file that you can flash from CWM recovery.

I've using my Galaxy Nexus (GSM) for a long time, but i want to get Root access, i've been reading a lot and it seems if i use Galaxy Nexus Toolkit it will delete all my data, there's any way to root it without losing any data?

no.
you have to unlock your bootloader (no matter which method you use, also, dont use a toolkit, use the sticky at the top of the forum) which wipes your data. period.

I did a root of my Galaxy Nexus, when I flashed the new 4.1. It did work fine. When the phone did the small update to 4.1.2, can it be true that it rolled back the root? My phone don't seem to be rooted anymore.
Isn't it possible to get root permissions again, without loosing data?

if your bootloader is unlocked, reflash the supersu.zip
otherwise, you have to unlock the bootloader and it will wipe your device.

if you enter fastboot, it will says "lock status: unlocked"
or you can see if when you first start up your phone if there's a little lock that is unlocked.

When I receive the 4.2 update (my phone is yakju), I will root again. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it a lot.

Similar thing happened to me. I was messing around with different ROM's for some time but in the end went back to the stock ROM. My phone now shows unlocked and using the stock recovery (as described here http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-samsung-galaxy-nexus/243004-recovery-mode.html).
The stock recovery offers 4 options: reboot, apply update from ADB or USB, wipe.
How do I "reflash the supersu.zip" from here? I want to avoid wiping as everything is set up as I like it now, and because it isn't rooted I can't back it up, catch 22 thing

Obviously, you need a custom recovery to flash a non-Google zip...

I'm sorry, I didn't know there was a rule against that. I searched Google for the problem and this thread came up closest.
Well sorry if I am not a genius like you who know everything already. I thought that forums like this was for asking questions.
It would be nice if instead of just being mean and nasty you'd offer some constructive suggestions, such as would installing a custom recovery wipe the phone? The distinction between the boot loader and the custom recovery isn't clear to me.

Sarcastic, aren't we? Look, XDA is first and foremost a developer site for developers to develop. Answering and asking questions about that development is only incidental. Members are expected to have read the rules of XDA and to follow them. That includes not bumping old threads, but it also includes an expectation that you will read the information readily available to you. Seeing the same common questions get asked daily, when there are good guides made specifically for this purpose, gets very old very fast. The constructive suggestion is to search and read. Guides abound both in the stickies and elsewhere, and the fact that you haven't found answers to your fairly common questions tells me that you either haven't made an effort to look, or you just don't understand and therefore probably shouldn't be messing with your phone.

I was able to root my gnex without wiping the data!
I dont know how it happened, but it happened, I was surprised too because I was really frustrated couldn't root it even after 10-15 tries ( I am a big time noob) and suddenly I unlocked the boot loader and rooted the phone without any loss of data, actually I was rooting because I had the VM100U something memory issue and my phone was terribly slow! I was surprised becasue i was expecting to copy all my files and crap one by one but now I have no issues

My phone is coming tomorrow (R800x, starting to think I should have ponied up for a GSM model but whatever) so I have been reading up on how to root and all that for the xperia play. I have had 3 phones now (evo shift, nexus s and EVO 4G lte)and thought i knew everything. I was wrong...
My question is does anyone know where i can read about x parts and how it works exactly?
Mostly i am confused about two things. I have read it installs cwm to /system. This tells me you can never wipe /system when installing new roms which goes against everything I knew about my previous 3 phones. Of course I've never had to deal with a locked bootloader before. I'll probably unlock mine due to this but anyway...
So if you have a locked bootloader and install cwm, then make a backup and then want to flash a new Rom you pretty much can only use a backup someone else made and can never wipe /system from what I read in that sticky. This doesn't cause issues? In my previous experience any time an issue with pretty much anything would arise you were told to wipe cache, dalvik, system and data before even asking questions.
If I ever want to flash a completely fresh Rom I will need to unlock my bootloader right?
I did read the sticky about the r800x but want to make sure I'm not missing something. I believe I understand this phone and am ready to root it and pay to unlock it but I want to be sure.

You can't flash roms with locked bootloader on the r800x. You can install cwm recovery with x-parts but most roms for locked bl are in nandroid backup. Only a select few have different installation process. You would have to read the op of whatever ROM you do wish to install, just to make sure you understand exactly what you are about to do. But if you do decide to unlock your phone its definitely worth it.

Yes you are correct. You can also install cwm after root from auto cwm installer

Now I want to reset everything, and leave my galaxy nexus 4.1.1 JB clean, factory reset: D Delete All the ROMs, CUstoms, etc...
Using the toolkit, what are the procedures, options to choose?

i'm sorry but, i cannot help you if you intend to use a toolkit. don't come back later opening threads about "bricking" your device. it's YOUR responsability.

edit: and before you ask why you shouldn't use a toolkit, you just have to read any other of those "i bricked my device" threads, i'm sure you'll read posts that explain why.

Please don't take the above post the wrong way. People here just try to help, but some just refuse to read just a little. Fastboot Flash is so much easier and safe...once you do it you'll want to do it over just for fun. Read the link above and you won't have any issues.

Fastboot is safer than toolkits, just don't run fastboot erase bootloader, someone told me it went through on the Nexus 7 section, i personally did not and will never try it.

Question for the OP. Did you even try researching your question before wasting space on the forum? There are plenty of resources on this Site to help. It would have literally taken less time to research the answer than to make your forum post.

[Q] Regarding Android 4.2 update for yakjuxw

Hi, i have an unlocked Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1 that has not received the android 4.2 OTA update. This is because my system is yakjuxw.
So i found a site explaining on how to switch to yakju or takju without loosing any data, apps etc:

AS a matter of fact i did, and found ways to flash a rom wiping all data from my phone, which is precisely what i don't want.
Now, i would thank those who actually came forward to answers to my questions instead of arguments that lead nowhere.

The process in the first link is fine and works.
However to point out a few important things:
1) If your bootloader is locked you have to unlock it with: "fastboot unlock oem" and continuing with the instructions on the phone which will eventually delete all your data. (if you have flshed a ROM before you know that)
2) do install CWM recovery ( you can find instructions to do that everywhere and also on the same page you found for the 4.2) and do a Nandroid backup. This way you can go back to your original system anytime you want (I do this all the time)
3) keep also other backups of apps and contacts I find google cloud pretty handy for that.
4) The instructions mentioned on this site works but it might happen that some app or library or database is not happy with the update so the device will go in a boot loop. In this case delete dalvik-cache (it might help), but if it doesn't help you will need to delete the data or the part that causes the issue for this you might look into the logcat.
PS: Zepius, Pandas are not so cute actually ... so what's the best ROM / Kernel (stock it isn't

I have flashed many roms in my old phone using CMW. Surely i don't want to debrand my new phone, so unless the bootloader is unlocked, i guess i'll be looking forward for the yakjuxw updates.

I used to think the same way as you and i also had the same yakjuxw but the updates come too late for those versions so i decided to go yakju and i have no problems now
My advice is that you do it, if you read carefully it becomes dead easy and its worth it

As written(linked) in the article this is just the software fingerprint I can assure you will not have issues as the main software is the same. The only thing changed is who is providing the updates. Imagine windows you get with dell and hp PC they both have their logos (yakju/xw) but the windows is the same s*itty windows
I used tohave yakjuxw, changed to yakju, takju back to xw.. not im on yakju. This is my job indeed to test apps on diff android versions and i flash time quite often every day and i can assure you all works fine
Anyway if you need a ROM that tells you it is xw let me know Ill upload one for you

Just to let future googlers know that the solution to convert yakjuxw to yakju as seen on this site:

has soft bricked my phone! I was able to flash a new ROM using Gnex toolkit but (of course) i did lose all my data!
BTW, with android 4.2.2 i'm noticing that wireless turns off after i lock the phone, is there a way round this or is it a new bug ?

4.2.1 Update
I've got a Galaxy Nexus with the yakjuxw build. Previously my phone's Android version was 4.1.1. Just this morning I got the 4.2.1 update! Fire away on the Check Now buttons guys.

4.2.1 Update

I am using a yakjuxw variant of Galaxy Nexus I9250. Today I got an official update and now I am running 4.2.1.
The update was about 95 MB....so now this confirms people are getting update for yakjuxw variant.
