We're trying to determine the "root" (pun intended) of the problem so if you wanna come in here and start a fight go find a local bar to do so. We need to try and locate the source of the problem so either post something useful or walk away.
There seems to be some confusion and I dont know if its being ignored or what but theres an issue with these kernels that needs to be looked into further before new ones continue to be released.
Theres an obvious problem for a good amount of people and everytime I look I see comments that there isnt a problem. So heres everything I could quickly find regarding it.
Now Im not trying to be a **** about this but I dont get how the issue is unheard of when its one of the biggest topics in this section. And so we're clear, this is happening in ALL kernels. Unfortunately its been more profound in Zedos because it seems more people went with his method.
All Im asking is before more and more kernels are released that someone at least acknowledge the problem and see if it can be addressed before more and more people root and start complaining because they were told there was no LO.S. bug

Yeah this just happened to me too, everything was fine this morning then I played a game of solitaire and after going back to my home screen I saw the circle. Rebooted phone and everything came back on. It's possible that the circle was there before I played the game of solitaire but I didn't notice until right after I quit playing.
Hopefully it gets straightened out soon. At least rebooting fixes the problem, I can handle rebooting for a little while if needed.

I can't really deal with the issue of having no service. My daughter has a heart issue and can't afford to miss a call. It's not like I walk around all day literally looking at my phone's screen seeing if I have service or not.
I did reboot...so like your's my service is back up.
But I definitely hope this gets fixed soon. I'd rather have root with broken heptic feedback than the inability to receive calls.

Telling you right now someone is going to come in here and go "this belongs in General" then a mod will move your thread and deduct 5 points from something, not sure...but just a heads up
I also see a lot of people having issues, but I'm now on day 2 of flashing Zedo V1 and have yet to experience any of these issues. Not sure what I did different, but everything just works... The only thing I did was after rooting was getting my MSL from Sprint and erased the proxy servers in the ##3282 menu.
EDIT: Ok, I just lost service 1 1/2 day after rooting... Bug finally hit me..
I dont mind it being moved and I have no clue what the deduction in "points" does but I'll deal with it.
Now Im getting much better battery but I know people are still losing service on the new OC kernel. My roommate happens to be on e the unlucky ones.
Man...thanks for posting this. Hopefully the mod doesn't close this thread. This definitely is a concern and a serious matter. I don't care if these kernels are, "use at your own risk" these kernels should've been listed as betas, and/or the bugs should've been listed and further testing should have been. If those steps were taken, I bet a lot of people would've held back from flashing them. I know I would have.

One thing that got to me was this morning I woke up, hoping to see a stock kernel and/or a way to return to stock. And instead, I see a new overclockable kernel. To me that's just not right. I think that you have to prioritize. That's like putting out a rom that has all data broke. Then instead of fixing it, you put out another rom...while disregarding the issues with the first rom. At least acknowledge the issue and let everyone know it's been worked on....don't just blow it off.
I know some of the devs over in the Evo forums was good about this....if something went haywire with one of their roms or mods...they were all on top of it to get the issue fixed and they also communicated with posting updates on the matter.
Like I said, hopefully the mods don't close this.
I'm definately gonna follow this thread...thanks Wingzfan

Bubby does have the stock kernel pulled. I was testing it till 1:30 in the morning but he's gotta recompile it. It was bootlooping so today thats his first order of business.
As for the kernels, I flashed it by choice. I dont blame the devs for ANYTHING, Im just saying acknowledge theres a bug and lets see how to resolve it.
I've been reading through the rooted kernel threads as well prior to jumping on the root wagon and have seen several people mention that they are not rooted and have experienced the loss of service so it seems that the issue may not be exclusive to the rooted kernels...possibly a Samsung bug?
Very possible which is why im hoping we can get an idea of how man people are rooted vs non rooted having it. Now the only thing is I cant find any complaints online about nonrooted phones doing it except a few here and youd think it'd be widely discussed

This is an issue that started with mine also yesterday. But not only did I lose data but gps also. A reboot fixed it but I would like to know whats going on. I just came from the evo 3d and there was an issue that had to do with the prl so I am going to give that a shot with the 11115 prl that fixed the evo. Will post back with the results later today.
On V5, Ive only had the loss of data once in about 12 hours, versus about 3 times on Zedo V1.
I also did http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17703908&postcount=11 for the hell of it to see if that helped (even though I got it at a sprint store)
For the record:
A) People have reported this issue even on the stock kernel. It is not clear where the cause is.
B) For kicks (and because it cannot hurt) I did the whole profile/PRL update thing that someone suggested. Be it luck or real benefit, I have no had the issue since.

I would think it would be widely discussed as well so that seems odd. I'm waiting to see what evolves or at least for stock kernel (an undo) before flashing a rooted one. I don't have TEP.
It's still a bit early for the issue to be too widely discussed.

Nice. I was told by a helpful Sprint cust. serv. rep. a while back that you should update your PRL & Profile when you go into a new area (tavel, move, or even long commute to work) regardless of which phone you have. I would think unboxing your phone would qualify as well. It sure couldn't hurt.

Ever owned a Samsung phone before?
This is my 3rd one and I swore after the last one Id never buy a Samsung phone again but I got sucked back in. Samsung is notorious for shipping phones with all kinds of bugs that should be considered showstoppers then pushing out fixes months later.
It would not surprise me at all if that was the case here. I am one of the ones having this issue and I am not rooted. Ive lost data several times after hanging up a call. The data never restores and I have to toggle 3G to get it come back.
I dont think this is a kernel issue. I think its something to do with the rest of the OS, either that or the kernel is a different problem thats just acting the same way.
Ok thats what i was hoping to find is nonrooted and rooted people who are having the issue. Now on my moment this issue was huge so i went to htc and maybe thats the case again. Maybe sammy dropped the ball again. Question is what can be done about it.
Sent from a Galaxy far far away...
First of all let me point at that I am currently still a OG EVO user. This will probably be my next phone on DEC. 1 once I am due for a upgrade with Sprint. I really love the design and specs for this phone but I have been turned off by all the LOS talk.
If a phone can't maintain a working signal it isn't much good no matter how nice the screen or specs are.
After doing some research on what I hope will be my next phone, I've come to the conclusion that this is a hardware problem. From what I can gather these phones have some kind of defect with the internal antenna which is causing this problem.
This probably isn't news to anyone on these forums but I just wanted to get some confirmation on this. I'm hoping that if this is in fact that problem the next batch of these phones released around the holiday season will have this problem fixed.
Assuming this hardware problem is not fixed; is there any rom/kernel combination that is known to be most effective in terms of this LOS issue?
Na don't think it's a hardware issue, if so I believe it wouldn't be so random. With the LOStKernel I haven't had any more issues but others have. That being said, if it were a hardware issue i would've had los as well already.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I agree If this is Hardware issues that say the Antenna get low signal and then won't pick it back up. Then That Pickup is what needs to be fixed (and that is software). We've all had low signal or switched to Roaming. This is where the issue is, at least to me. The Low Signal strength maybe a 2nd issue but that may need a Power adjustment.
I also agree with the LOSKernel. I was averaging 1-2 a day and haven't had one in 3 days (I installed 3 days ago).

Yeah, it's not hardware. The way the bug pops up is extremely circumstantial...so much so that we still don't know the parameters of the circumstance that triggers the bug. Having a low signal seems to have something to do with it but it has also occurred with full signal...but software changes seem to have a gigantic impact on it. I haven't seen one in weeks. I dunno....
I wouldn't be too concerned. I have the phone and I'm not.
...and it is a pretty bad-ass phone. If you are already a Sprint subscriber you'll love it, especially coming from the Evo4G.
I have never had LOS.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I'm thinking this is definitely software related, I personally didn't have a LOS problem until I started flashing kernels.Even on the Loskernel I was experiencing several LOS a day, flashed back to stock rom/kernel and haven't had a problem. From what I have experienced, Los seems to correlate with the phone roaming off of the sprint network and unable to connect back.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Its software. I haven't had LOS since the day the phone came out.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
Its a modem issue the kernel can only help so much. Samsung will be releasing a new modem.bin when they give us the maintenance update.
No it's a sprint problem my phone is fully flashed to ntelos and I have been trying to get los since monday even trying different kernels and roms I just cant produce los
Sent from my Galaxy S2 using Tapatalk
I've seen a couple posts saying the LoS issue is related to roaming off/on the Sprint network...this may be true to a certain extent but I sit 5 feet from an Airave and I'll get LoS a few times a day when at home. Happens just as often if not more when I'm out and about.
On a more related note, OP: this phone is great and they will fix the phone somehow or make good on it. If for some reason they haven't solved the problem and you are over the 14-30 days (maybe even waaaayyyy past that...months!) then they will take the phone back. If you can't get them to give you a free Photon or basically whatever you want, then you are a pushover! Just have to start making a papertrail for your issue, that is all really.
Would that necessarily rule out that the air wave itself is not roaming or losing/regaining signal throughout the day affecting your phone?

I have an Airave in my house and do not have any connectivity issues at all to it. I am also using a phone that has not been rooted and have yet to get an LOS either.
My point is that if the air wave is losing connectivity at all, then your phone is as well forcing it to roam

I never got LOS until I started flashing(about 3 days )
I was getting once per day utill the Lost kernel came along, now I've only had 1 LOS in the 10 days or so since the kernel has been out. I definitely believe it's software or modem related.
Bad ass phone nonetheless...dont hesitate!
Love this phone. Got it launch day and have never experienced a single LOS. I've never tried to root it or install a custom kernel.
Stock rom and not rooted, never had LOS.
I only have had LOS when I installed a ROM a long time ago.. Have had no problems on stock rom, stock kernel, rooted
I've been reading this forum for the past two days trying to see if there is a similar thread with this issue. Please point me in the right direction if there is a similar thread resolving this issue (this forum is colossal!).
I recently bought a UK version GSM Galaxy Nexus running Modaco 4.0.2 Ir8. I'm using it on T-Mobile's network (The GN is replacing my HTC Sensation).
The gentleman that sold it to me had already unlocked, rooted, and flashed it with Modaco. It works blazing fast. The only thing is that when ever I make a phone call it literally drops in less than 5 minutes. The signal seems to be switching like crazy from 3G to HSPA+ as well.
I've called TMO and they have no clue what the issue is (4 different reps told me 4 different things from needing to factory reset to the towers being down etc.).
Again the phone works great besides the fact that I can't make a phone call for more than a couple of minutes before it drops.
Has anyone seen this with their GN? Is it the phone? The Mod? Are T-Mobile's towers not able to pick up this phone's radios because it's from the UK?
How can I go about fixing this (Factory reset? etc.)? I'm literally about to factory reset this thing this morning when I get home from work.
I don't really have too much experience as far as rooting goes but willing to learn and get this issue resolved.
What radio version are you using?
I'm on T-Mobile and xxkk6 works well for me.
If you don't know what you have, I suggest u go to the dev section and start reading for a while
xxkk6 at the least should be on there. i think there is xxkl7 possibly. the xxkk6 is the stock radio, but if there is a kk7 or kl7 might want to try that as it would be a later version.
How can I tell which radio version I'm on and does it give me the option to switch it?

Is there a grid which shows which radio band is for which area? Anyone know of anywhere that shows the step by way to do this?

For anyone who had to do this process: Is this a normal thing when rooting and flashing, to have to find a better baseband etc.? Is it because my phone is a UK version that TMO is having an issue dropping my calls?
And lastly, anyone know what the best baseband/radio is suitable for NYC? And why doesn't the phone just figure out which is the best baseband?

the baseband should work. it's gsm, the world standard. but i'm guessing since i don't know exactly what is tweaked, but that the specific baseband for your region will bias your phone for the known networks. ugkk7 works great for me. atnt. i think there is a ugkl6 or 7. sometimes you have to test them. some will work better for others. some will work great and not eat battery. if it eats battery, try another one. i think samsung is decent about releasing different radios for different regions. it can be confusing. now when it's comes to updating their roms, that is a different story.
Ok,
The baseband def has to be affecting my battery. I'm getting not even 10 hours on a full charge from moderate use.
I don't really know exactly what the first owner did to it, only what he told me.
My plan is to bring it back to factory settings (found an article about how to restore the GSM version, but have yet to find any youtube videos abou it....I only see LTE videos on rooting and unrooting, and I'm not sure if it's the same process so I'm not touching those).
If that doesn't help it then I'll go about flashing and changing the baseband.
Again this whole baseband business is really new to me. The input you guys have been giving so far is much appreciated.

Update:
Ended up coming home early from work and staying up all morning trying to figure this out. I decided on using this link first: (http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/restore-galaxy-nexus-to-stock-how-to/)
to re-lock. That took about 4 hours of troubleshooting and getting to know the lingo and terminology. Then from a combination of other youtube videos I spent another 4 hours trying to figure out how to lock the bootloader. Believe it or not the Xda link about this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310) saved me from losing my mind. I literally didn't go to sleep until I made sure I brought the phone back to factory settings.
After I finally got the phone back to factory settings (believe me, it wasn't fun figuring this out especially when I've never rooted before) I noticed the wifi wasn't working, or had a very weak signal. Content with the phone at least being back on factory settings and locked, I go to sleep and wake up today seeing the same issue with the wifi (mean while, I now have good signal/service...didn't even have to mess with the baseband radio config).
I restart the router in our house and power down the phone and restart. Problem fixed.
Not really sure why or how, but bringing the phone back to factory settings seems to make it work just as fast as it worked when Modaco Ir8 4.0.2 was on it. Except now I have amazing Service signal.
I can honestly state that rooting really isn't for me especially with the notion that with every new mod that comes out you have to be flashing on a constant basis. Even though I almost lost my mind trying to figure this out, I would still rather have this approach vs Apple's walled garden approach though. Any day.
One of the reasons I like the Nexus line of phones is that it's pretty much the only Android phone that gets all the updates first and on a constant basis. Which makes it such an awesome phone in that it's also the phone that Google allows any and all capabilities to be customized. I have true respect for all the devs out there who attack this stuff daily.
Just be sure to get enough exercise in and healthy meals along with rest lol.

Just be sure to get enough exercise in and healthy meals along with rest lol.

some people actually recommend factory resetting your device from the get go. i would, but i always just run with the hardware just to make sure the hardware and stress i throw at it will handle all the roms and stuff. and to exchange my phone if finding there is a problem.
Good to hear that you got it sorted out in the end

Rooting/Flashing is great IMO for people who will never have the luxury of getting updates like Nexus phones get. Take control in your own hands on when you decide you want to update(s) etc.
I'm sure any Devs out there (like on this forum) also love tinkering. To each his own.

Indeed. I def learned a lesson: Never let anyone ever root your phone for you. The guy who rooted it for me was nice enough to say I could email him for questions but the more I kept emailing him the more I could tell he was probably getting frustrated at all my worrisome questions ("I'm dropping calls", "Is it because of the rooting?", "My wifi isn't working", "is it because of the rooting?..." etc.).
Just glad to know there are tons of available options for one to seek out help when issues like this arise.

I've been having an issue with my softkeys (settings, home, etc...). They will randomly press opening settings, going back and opening the recent apps. Usually it does a combination of all of them and the only way to fix it is to turn off the screen and turn it back on.
I first thought this was a rom problem and switched to a new one. This didn't help so I believe it has to do with hardware. I looked up online and people say that it is a screen or battery problem. So I flashed to stock ICS and brought it into sprint, the guy was nice and stuff but he said he couldn't do anything unless we could make it happen. It wouldn't do it, so he couldn't do anything about it.
I'm wondering if it actually is a software issue or something that I'd be able to fix myself. Has anyone had any problems like this? It's not too often but often enough to be annoying. Any help would be nice.
Thanks in advance
I've heard pepper have issues with soft keys in low signal areas but never heard of that issue.. When you left the store did you have the problem on stock ics still

Well, I flashed back to Paranoid when I got back home and so far I've had no problems. I haven't been using my phone though, I'll have to see how this goes.

I have the issue of menus open and close in all apps and from home screen in low to no signal areas. Some times making the phone unusable. If I turn mobile data off seems to cure the random menu opening issue... Becomes 1/2 a phone... No data and 10 a month for... What oh ya high speeds data... Used to get 10 Meg download on 4G until a couple months ago.. Now only getting 700K, I think the Sprint tower near my house was stolen lol is that a word? FI27 is out, might help. My phone has been flagged for liquid damage so hard to find out if it's a hardware problem causing the menu issues. My upgrade isn't until May so I will make the most till then. NOTE 2? Little Rant in your thread OP... Sorry

I don't mind the rant
I think it may have something to do with signal however. I was at work today and I got a bunch of random presses again. There was a good sized storm and I only had a bar or two. I'm also still wondering if it is software but I cant even stand to use stock ICS to see if it happens, if I couldn't use custom roms I don't think I would even own an android phone.
I was at the gym last night... 1 to no bars, menus and soft keys started poping like crazy... Turned off mobile networks.. 3G data and not one more Phantom menu press... If I wasn't so lazy I would use a custom prl and roam control... Bet that would cure my low signal areas. I will test that theory soon.
I had same menu action when I Odin stock el29 GB, with all modems I flashed

I have use menu other Android devices my first phone was a Samsung moment, i rooted all my phones and i 've never had this problem, i even called Samsung and they say its sprints network not software or hardware, so i will take my phone to another store to see if i have better luck
I was experiencing the same problem on Gamer Mod. Even reflashed after fully wiping everything and still had it happening... was using apex launcher...but never happened to me before. Anyway wiped again and flashed back to blue kuban and its gone.
Shame because I really liked gamer mod.

I don't see how a network can cause an issue like this though.
Also, I've tried wiping and flashing multiple roms on everything from GB to JB and still the same thing.
It is a low signal issue. The end. Only solution.. Get it replaced. My co worker had it. So I had first hand experience with it.

When I brought it in he said he can only do something if we could duplicate the problem. Should I call Sprints call center and see what they can do? Would they already know about the problem or are they going to pretend like they've never had an issue like it. Do I have to flash back to stock ICS or do they not care? Sorry about the questions, I'm just pretty new to having my own phone plan and my own problems and don't really know how to deal with them yet.

You have to unroot the phone or they will say the rooting its causing this problem or even worse they will say it's big no no to root phones and they will invalidated your warranty, show them this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKG-iq4XezU so they get an idea what the problem is
That is really odd, hadn't heard of that before. I instantly thought hardware, but it sounds like it has been proven otherwise. Is your device under warranty? If so, could be worth the hassle of a replacement, otherwise sprint call center is pretty worthless in general. They will give you pre made responses and tell you they were not aware of any such issue unless you get someone who actually gives any kind of a crap haha. Good luck! Be sure to post any updates!

The only way to duplicate the problem everytime on my phone is to go to a low signal area. Ask the Sprint tech to go with you maybe buy them a cup of coffee and a donut.

Ok, before I call in I have one last question. Will they send me a loaner phone? I need my phone for work and what not so if I cant get something temporary then I'm not even going to be able to send it in.
Not sure if this will answer your question but a co-worker recently had to take his OG EVO in for service. They gave him a loaner phone, an EVO 3D.
My wife's E4GT had the same phantom soft key issue. It was recently replaced due to another unrelated issue and so far, no issues.

Very last question, I promise. Should I call Sprint or call Samsung directly? I'm most likely going to try and get it replaced this weekend. Hoping that everything goes well.
Short of a sledge hammer or selling the phone is there any remedy?
Phantom keys were crazy on my phone yesterday. I hadn't seen the problem very much in a week or so. I have no idea what was going on, but cleared dalvik cache and that seemed to help. No problems with it today. I wish I could figure out a correlation besides poor signal.
I'm wondering if this is a ROM problem or problem with my local Verizon service.
I'm getting very frequent dropped calls. In the Seattle area we have 4g service, I'm running AOKP Toro jb milestone 1.
Service drops to 0 bars, then after several seconds, comes back. Generally to show 3 bars of 4G service.
I was contemplating going back to stock to see if the problem is the same. But I thought I'd post here first to see if it may be a ROM problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks, RWM
I would use the new radios FG02. This might help. Helps with spotty transitions of 4G lte to 3G.

Mods please move this thread to general
If 4g drops to no signal and then comes back it could be hardware related. If you have the latest radios on your phone and this still happens you may need to get a replacement phone. If you take it to Verizon they'll probably try to swap the SIM first.
To return to Verizon do you think I should go back to stock first?

I would to be safe. If you're returning it, use the factory image and relock the bootloader.
I've had this issue too but only on AOKP milestone 1...dunno what it is. I've noticed when it happens "system ui" fails which has also happened when using the phone.
I haven't dropped any calls, but I get data drops every now and then.

I have this same issue, it only happens when I have good signal, when my signal is weak it's fine, it's only when I have strong signal or 4g, I assume it's a hardware issue at least for myself, because I haven't noticed a difference with different roms

Welcome to the Android Community. For sure you will find the answer to all your questions regarding android in these forums. With that said, make you read before you post. It makes you look like a noob and rightly so. This is for the Development Contribution alone. This should have been posted in the Q&A or General forum.. BTW your device is deffective- return it until you get a good one. It took me 5 times. Talk to Tech Support Level 2 when you call Verizon no one else.
Hey was wondering if you ever figured out this issue, im having the same problems only mine drops the call every 30 exactly. If i use the phone for say 28 minutes then the next call will drop in 2 min to finish out the original 30. I have been having this problem for awhile but was never this predictable, gone through many different radios, roms, eery did a factory wipe with a full wipe of everything and reinstalled xenonHD rom build number JOP40G. Please any help would be awesome. Thanks Also in the seattle area.

Hi, I am running AOKP JB 4.2 milestone 2 on my Galaxy Nexus and experiencing the same problem. My calls dropped after some time between 5 an 30 minutes with "Out of area service" alert. I am from the Czech Republic using Vodafone. I tried getRIL to install matching RIL (baseband i9250XXKK1), but this did not help. Before this I was running old AOKP ICS 4.0 without any problem. Does anyone have an idea, how to solve this problem?
Thank you very much.

SOLUTION: I finally found out a solution for my problem. I reflashed radio firmware to the new version (i9250XXLJ1) and installed matching RIL using GetRIL. Now everything works without any problem.
