[Q] [R800x] Xperia PLAY General Questions - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wonder a handful of things.
1) To use Rom Manager on an Xperia PLAY does the bootloader have to be unlocked?
2) Has anyone ever had any problems with the unlock method provided by Alejandrissimo?
3) Does a device have to be rooted to use the paid unlock method mentioned above?
4) Since CWM has to be installed in "system" on a locked Xperia PLAY, can it be installed normally from Rom Manager if the bootloader is unlocked?
I will post occasional new questions as I come to them. I created this for all those with Xperia PLAY questions. I can root anything else and do roms but jeez this phone gets me

Uhm to give you a Quick help
1) No, you only need to be rooted
2) Never used it - for root I simply use flashtool, connect the device with USB debugging on, Click on Root - it gets done within 2 Minutes.
3) I would figure no - If he can unlock the bootloader he will also root the device if necessary.
-> For unlocking bootloader you can also use the SONY service for free.
4) I never put CWM anywhere, I simply download it from the Play Store and it works -> You got to have root tho!

This user obviously does not have an R800x because most of these answers are wrong for that phone.
1. ROM manager does not work on the R800x nor do you need it. The proper tools for working with ROMs on this phone are Flashtool and Fastboot.
2. Allejandrissimo's method works well and he can fix just about any problem that you could possibly have.
3. The free methods do not work with the R800x. I think you are supposed to have it rooted first but if you are having a problem with that, Allejandrissimo can help you with that as well.
4. Once you have an unlocked bootloader, Recovery (CWM) is built into most kernels, so you will not need to install it separately.

Thank you. That helps me a lot

Now you say that Rom Manager doesn't work on the R800x, so then roms like cyanogenmod will have to be downloaded from a browser and put onto the SD then correct?
Sent from my R800x (that's eventually gonna get root & an unlocked bootloader)

[Q] A few questions about MK16, Roms, etc.

Sorry, I know this is the arc forum, but as there is no mk16 forum, I saw that usually people post pro development's in arc's forums.
I bought an used mk16 with the 4.0.1.a.0.283 firm, and the bootloader unlockable as explained in this link the SE website.
I installed Android SDK, JDK, PC companion, etc. I was unable to install the fastboot drivers until I found someones in SE website and now it seems to be OK (blue light if I connect the phone (turned off) to the computer while holding menu key)
After that, I configured my phone to enable USB debugging. Then I installed flashtool, and I tried to root the phone with it. It worked! (I didn't expect it to work, because I saw a few post with scripts, etc. to root the phone...)
So...
- Now I am with that firmware, rooted. Wich rootable firmware do you recommend me to flash to my phone? I always loved cyanogenmod, but I don't know if there is problems with the freexperia releases (like bad quality in camera picture, low volume, etc.)
- What is the baseband? I have one ending in 49.
- What are the requirements to install clockworkmod recovery? I love this recovery to do my nand backups, etc. Do i need to unlock bootloader to this? Is there any chance to lock again the bootloader? You know, for warranty things.
- Do you have ny list of what apks are secure to erase from /system/app? For example, I don need the moxier pro, let's golf, etc.
I suppose that those questions have been answered before, but without the mk16 forum, searching that info is quite impossible...
Thanks in advance.

Xperia Pro has a very few roms for now.The famous CM7 & CM9 are available for Xperia Pro.I guess,MIUI is also available(not sure). But,You must unlock your bootloader in order to install these roms.Rooted phone is not enough to install these roms.Atleast not yet. And rest assured, there is not drawback regarding camera and volume.Different users have different taste, many like it and many dont. But the fact is they are closely equal.
Basebands are well explained by a XDA member in the following post, please do take a look at it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462360
For CWM, you only need a rooted phone. And the easiest way to install CWM on locked-bootloader Xperia 2011 device is by using this beautiful app from the following link.Go check it out

For relocking bootloader,i haven't come across any thread which claims to relock Xperia Pro's bootloader. But yes, relocking Xperia Arc's bootloader is poosible. You can give it a try but I'm not sure if it would work on Xperia Pro or not. Here is the link:

Here again,we have a the list of system apks with their descriptions for Xperia Arc's firmware.I assume that the Xperia Pro Has Almost the same System Apks with it so the list for Xperia Arc would also imply for Xperia Pro as well. Here is the link:

PS: Welcome To XDA
Thank you very much for all that information and the wellcome.
I can execute commands like "fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version" or "fastboot.exe devices" while in fastboot mode, so I assume that's OK.
But in the SE website they are very insistent about voiding warranty depending of blablabla. My phone is an unlocked (SIM free) from fabric one. I understand it will void the warranty if the phone would be form Vodafone (for example), but not mine... Do you know anything about this?
Do you recommend me any official rom? maybe the .42 one?
Now I have clear everything about the baseband, thanks.
That CWM apps you linked say to me (downloades form market) that MK16i is not supported by the app
I will take a look at that APK list, but first I want to be able do a NAND backup before starting to remove apks
Thanks again.

See, Unlocked phone means the phone is SIM free,i.e you can use any carrier SIM in your phone. But, Unlocked-Bootloader is a different thing. When you unlock bootloader, then you are free to flash any ROM which is compatible with your phone.Unlocking Bootloader voids warranty and that is what the SE website is trying to say.
I would recommend you to update your phone to the official .42 fimware version because it has many new features when compared to .283 ROM.Use SE update service or PC Companion for updating your phone.
And about cwm..try this...

Thx again
I know the diff between sim locked and bootloader looked. It's just that I don't understand why they let you unlock the bootloader, but don't keep the warranty...
I have unlocked the bootloader right now. Didn't know that it wipes all your configuration, apps, etc! At least, it's still rooted.
I have installed that CWM, and booted to it, but now I don't know what combination do I have to press to boot again into CWM XD Maybe is an image to boot just one time?
And about the ROM you recommend, PC Companion offers me the .62, not the .42. SE Update Service tells me that I have modified software (because of the rooting, I suppose) so it can't update my phone. Any idea?
Thanks again

Now that you have unlocked-bootloader, then you must not use SE update service, niether PC Companion Update nor SE OTA updates !! If you do,then it will brick your phone.
The other option you have is to flash a firmware. For more details follow this link http://www.wotanserver.com/en/sony-ericsson/se/xperia-pro-mk16/unlock-tool/debranding-flash

Thanks about the wotan link. Really easy to flash. Now I'm in .42. Do you know where can I find the firmware changelogs?
I'll take a second look to flashtool, because I'm going to need it to flash the CM 7.2 and the baseband...

If you just need to flash an official firmware, then there is no need to unlock the bootloader. I was advised not to unlock it when not necessary (for example to flash the phone with some custom ROM like CM). Because with locked bootloader you should not be able to brick the phone and you could be always able to save the situation using Sony PC Companion.
So if you need to flash an official firmware, you can do it without any unlocking via Wotanserver. The firmware flashing is free, just register there. The flashing is very easy - there is a graphic wizard which tells you what to do.
EDIT: Ooops, flashing FW using Wotanserver is no longer free - costs 2 EUR now. Few weeks ago I flashed my phone there for free...

If you updated your phone, you need to flash (with flashtool) a previous version of stock GB in order to root your phone

After a few frustrating days of searching I found this website http://www.unlockroot.com/index.htm which I just ran and it worked great! I am now a proud owner of a rooted SE XPlay. This program only took about 5 minutes to root my phone and give me superuser (still not sure what that is).
At any rate, you download the program, install it, follow the directions and then run it. It's that simple.
You can find some good info here on apps that you can remove. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046699

i mainly wanted it to play games on it, but i have found almost all games i wanted for it now, exept for king of fighters, and the latest version of FPSE, both do require a rooted phone
but im happy with what i got already, still might look into rooting it for all the other perks though

Fpse does not require a rooted phone (unless Im reading what you mean wrong then disregard)
Easiest way to root your phone running ANY firmware is to unlock your bootloader and flash Superuser in CWM and your all set.

Well I tried unlocking the bootloader and not sure why but wasn't able to. I used the program that I linked to above which was a simple as installing the program, running it, connecting my phone, clicking the ROOT button and within a few seconds my phone rebooted and was rooted with superuser installed. After that I installed Titanium Backup Pro and went to town.
TOO EASY! :good:
Heck I rooted 4 phones with that program within about 10 minutes.

Perfect!
Ok... it's more or less like this:
First you need to know if your phone can unlock bootloader. To do this, you need to enter *#*#7378423#*#* in phone pad/caller. There is no need for send.
You will enter a menu, there you must use touch screen to select "Service Info" and then "Configuration". In "Rooting Status" you should see something like
Rooting Status:
Bootloader unlock Status: Yes
If it says "Yes" then you can unlock bootloader.
A thing to considerate when unlocking bootlocker is: if you unlock bootloader using EMEI service in Sony Webpage, you will loose your DRM and warranty. If you don't want to loose them, you must use test point to unlock bootloader, but understand something, once you unlock bootloader by test point there is NO way to relock it again. If you unlock it by EMAI service you can always relock it flashing a locked bootloader... wich by the way, has no sense at all, why will you lock a bootloader once you unlock it???
Once you unlock the bootloader you could do almost anything with your phone, you could flash custom kernels, flash radio bands, install custom roms, gain root access, etc.
Now, do you need a unlocked bootloader?, that will depends on wich custom rom you want to install. There some roms that doesn't need a unlocked bootloader to install them.
After you have unlocked bootloader you must gain root access with SuperOneClick. Download it, unzip it, put your PLAY in usb debug mode, conect phone, run app, click Root. It's that simple.
With root access now you must install CWM Recovery. There are 2 ways to do it. First way is installing "CWM_Installer-v5.apk" (attached below). You must send it by Bluetooth and install it. When you run it, it will download and install CWM Recovery. Using this way will allow you to enter recovery by pressing vol down key when "Sony Ericsson" title shows after reboot.
The second way to install it is flashing a custom kernel. This is by far the easiest way. I recommend "Advanced Stock (with Recovery)", you can always choose another later on. Right now you only need access to recovery. To enter recovey mode, you must press your back button a couple of times when "Sony Ericsson" title shows after reboot.
Once you have CWM Recovery, you MUST do a full backup. No matter what you do later with your PLAY, if you (for any reason) want to go back stock, with a full backup you can always go back.
Now you are ready to install a custom rom. Wich one install?, that's up to you and what are you gonna do with your PLAY or what do you need from a custom rom.
Xperia PLAY has one BIG problem with custom roms: only 3 or 4 provide full support for game controls and touchpads.
So, your main question right now is: I'm gonna play commercial games like Dead Trigger, or I'm gonna play emulators like Fpse?. If you are gonna emulator any custom rom will do, BUT, if you plan to play commercial games, then choose carefully what rom are you going to install.
I try first CM9 using FreeXperia 149 and I hate it, a bit slow, no tethering, no touchpad support. Then I try CM7.2 and it was as fast as it could be, but no touchpads in commercial games. So my choices went to Dixperia 2 or Xperia NXT LE. There was 2 more options, Cola Rom and Gamer 4 Rom, but I didn't try any of these.
Because you are asking for help on CM installation, I will refer only to this, but remember what I said about commercial games.
To install CM on your Xperia PLAY first you need to know if you have a CDMA or a GSM phone. To do such you need to turn off your phone and remove the battery cover. Then you must observe: can you insert a microSD card only?, if so, then you have a CDMA phone. On the contrary, if you can insert another card behind microSD card, then you must have a GSM phone. For reference, Xperia PLAY R800i, R800a, and R800at are all GSM phones, while Xperia PLAY R800x is only CDMA.
Knowing this, you must download CM according to your phone, this ones for GSM, and this ones for CDMA phones.
Optional, you can download Google apps for CM7 or CM9 from here.
You now need to open rom zip and extract boot.img. You need to flash this using fastboot.
Now put rom zip and Google apps zip on microSD card. Reboot in recovery mode. Inside CWM choose "wipe data/factory reset", then "wipe cache partition", and then in advanced options choose "Wipe Dalvik Cache". Then on main menu choose "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard", search for the zip you just download from CM webpage. Repeat steps to install Google Apps, and then reboot.
The very first time will take about 2-3 minutes to start.
Hope this helps.
Thank you very much for your complete answer

That's kind weird...why buying a gaming phone if you are not going to play with it???
Anyway, for a smartphone use I would choose CM7 without even thinking about it, but maybe you would want to try first Xperia NXT LE for maximum speed and space for apps.
Good luck with that.

Ok thank you. First i have to backup some things

Very weird root issue

When I first bought my ZL, I rooted the phone using binary4 V27 on superuser mode and that was very fast and simple. I could modify system files and do everything.
One day using my ultimate stupidness, I updated the firmware to 10.1.1.....253 then I did factory reset without doing a backup for my root.
Right now, when I go to settings -----> about ----> I get Kernal version 3.4.0 with android version 4.1.2 but unfortunately It seems like I don't have a rooted phone + I am unable to do any function of a rooted phone like modifying system files or ....etc .
I've tried million ways such as:
1- rooting the phone using the same method --------> the result is stucking at the wight screen and nothing happened.
2- Using motochopper method --------> doesn't work
3- Using the method of installing Android SDK and using the command prompt window to push (Su-busybox-superuser.apk) files to data/local/tmp/ --------> when reach sysrw step (sysrw not found)
tried to type SU (su not found)
tried to use one of the alternative commands like cd /system/usr/we-need-root or ./su-backup -----> file not found
or mount -o remount,rw '' /systemmount ---------> Operation not permitted
I will be following your instructions directly and give u the feed back
I am not gonna move anywhere until solving this issue BC I am getting crazy
I would highly appreciate your help guys , ... Thank you so much in advance

Ur bootloader is lock or unlock? If lock, you have to be patient for new root exploit method to appear.
Another way is to degrade ur Rom to. 434 and root. Then flash doomkernel v7 (this only apply to bootloader unlock) and flash .253 xcluding kernel. When finish once u want to reboot, there will be request to root appear.
Another another way, download rootkeeper, then temp un root and run OTA but some people in Z forum reported that it still fail to update, some successfully update.

So thankful for ur reply
Unfortunately this is too much for a beginner like me so actually I have to search alot to get any of your solutions done.
by the way I did only root by binary4 so I think I still have a locked bootloader.
Thanks again

Some aspects of modifying this phone can leave you a seriously broken phone, notably the TA partition. You would benefit greatly from doing a lot (like hours and hours) of reading in the "Z" section. All the activity is there, not in the ZL section. 99.9% of all the information there applies to the ZL (but practically NONE of the download files, so do not use software there unless clearly labeled for the ZL). The sections on backing up TA (look for DRM and TA), on using flashtool.
Note that all the information on root that does not specifically mention 253 is obsolete.

Thanks alot for your reply but I really don't understand why this device (ZL) is being ignored like that
I have opened a thread here about that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293512
so many ZL users are complaining and unfortunately things are not going well

help me please

I can't integrate apps system app updates, can't create any of ext2/3/4 through link2sd, it always boot loop on sony logo, and after that even on a start up, then I need to remove micro sd from phone to boot up my phone, I rooted it with Frama Root Apk and installed titanium backup and lucky patcher apk on it, when I tryed to make a link with lucky patcher it said that I need busybox, I download free version on play store and installed it, then taped on install (in the apk) and it rebooted nice with out that problem, and then I installed link2sd and it all started....sorry for writing like this, but I bad at English and in hurry, If You understood anything please help.
The phone should not reboot after installing busybox also busybox has to be installed in system/xbin this will probably be your problem

Hi, thank you for trying to help, but I checked that and it is installed in xbin, but I was looking on some other sites and found out that i just half rooted my phone which means no system changes just root app installing. After that I was little sad, but after that continued search for full rooting and readed that it's need to unlock bootloader,...I was searching for that and typed in *#*#73...#*#* and followed instructions and saw that it is not possible to unlock bootloader, so is there any way for that to be fixed or not? By the way I used rootfix and it passed test(if that were test, but it passed).
P.S.: I also followed instruction on their official bootloader unlocking site and I was trying to ignore that, that step is not workink, downloaded all programs, and other stuff and used CMD and entered fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xkey and it said it is not allowed, (I inserted my key that I got from them).
Wrong section, please repost in the Q&A section, thanks

There is no way to unlock the bootloader if it is not allowed
Did you run the root fix just once?

2 times, and I accidently itegrated g+ and it uninstalled every app that was binded to it, lost play store, chrome, gmail, google play, and I flashed a stock rom but it was for India and now got some apps that I don't want in my phone but can't uninstall them....and I updated system to latest version that is 15.4.a.0.23 and android 4.3 JB, and what is worst I can't find usb debug.Sry for bothering you....and is it possible because I took it from store that is SIM operator (don't know exact word for it, but I can only use one sim operator, networ lock I guess)...Thank you for your time and please forgive me for veisting your time....
For usb debugging you need to go to settings>about then scroll down to build number and keep tapping build number until a popup says you are now a developer then developer menu will be in settings.
Sim lock has nothing to do with bootloader so unlocking it to any carrier will not unlock bootloader
At the minute there is no possible way to unlock the bootloader if it is not allowed on the device
