I've used them all partially but for the longest time now.. ive been a fan of equalizer.

Biggest question, do any work to improve 3rd party apps like Pandora?

Yep dsp and equalizer work on all system sounds.

Thanks for the DSP Manager links! I have been using Equalizer for months but decided to test DSP manager now, and it really rocks! I like that it is a system app as well and that it works for all players. I use Spotify, Google Music, and Pocket Casts, so I need an equalizer that works for several music players. Equalizer would sometimes not work perfectly, but DSP Manager seems solid!

Dsp all the way. I used to use power amp and never cared much for dsp but the Apollo / dsp combo is fantastic.

Huge fan of PowerAmp. I love the UI and the fact that it does gapless perfectly.
I do however keep the EQ turned off. The Klipsch S4 sound great with the GNex set flat.

old poweramp's fan...but onestly from a month i switched to apollo\dsp manager or n7 player pro\dsp manager and i'm going very well.anyway also the use of only poweramp rocks, always used on ginger and for times on gnex.after posting in this 3ad,i want to re-switch to poweramp and give it a try with newest updates.well done phone_user,good 3ad!

i use volume+ and it's working fine on my GN.

wow looks like im the only person thus far that uses Equalizer your missing out

DSP manger FTW

Surprised volume + isn't on this list. It makes the speaker sound way better and twice as loud. But if I was to pick from op's list I would say equalizer.

I personally get better sound using poweramp. And I love the player because it actually shows the right album art.

Hi phone_user,
I agree 100%,Volume+ in first then Equalizer since it's on the list
And probably it's ridiculous but Volume+:75Ko/Equalizer:2,1M... and more RAM used just for a sound app(ok more features than Volume+ like widgets).
But since this thread is not a comparo between Volume+ and....I choose Equalizer.
You should have done a poll

I don't really use a music effects app, because honestly I don't know what their potential is... never really played around. But does it make that much of a difference (i.e. better music quality)? If so, which app and settings do you recommend? Screenies w/ setup please.

PowerAmp. Love it

It does help quite a bit. I notice the stock audio sounds so flat and dull... with equalizer I up the treble and bass cuz it also lacks the thump I like. I listen to a lot of metal and sub genres of that...(metalcore, Hardcore, etc) so the higher treble sounds nice. Here is where my equalizer is at. The treble is a tad high but you can always lower it to your liking. I have the same "v" shape on my laptop with beats audio.

[APP] PowerAMP-The best Android music player (WITH equalizer!)

Hey all. First I will say that I am NOT the creator of this app, nor do I have anything to do with its development. I am simply sharing it since I found a topic on it on the general Android app forums on XDA and have come to love it IMMENSELY.
Features:
-FULL 10-band Equalizer
-Preamp
-BEAUTIFUL and RESPONSIVE clean interface
-Swipe support for changing songs with impressive 3D animation
-Support of just about EVERY music format known to man WITH equalizer and preamp support on all
-Folders as PLAYLISTs support
-Pretty widget
-Easy to navigate, FAST
Did I mention that if you use it on a Galaxy S device, it can sound VERY VERY impressive due to the Galaxy S having a really high-end sound chip (either the best or one of the best on the market currently). To boost the volume use it in conjunction with Audioboost based on supercurio's audio fix. You can find Audioboost on the market or somewhere on the XDA forums.

Woah, I love it. Proper playlist recognition as well so now I can use my playlist files again.
Great software, but people throw around "best music player on Android" too often without realising that it may be only be the best for their use.
I prefer WinAmp for my use for a number of reasons:
- I don't use an EQ, the GS has perfect sound reproduction, so its really not neccessary
- folder play is irrelevant to me since I have a properly tagged music collection
- WinAmps widget is better IMO, and lockscreen widget control is nice
- PowerAmp lacks LastFM scrobbling
(WinAmp also supports playlists, which is indeed nice, hopefully one of these two will support browsing/playing by Genre soon, but for the meantime I have playlists for each genre as a workaround)
Thanks for recomending PowerAmp!
Top player very easy to use and nice interface, i had to look for a new one as Player Pro started giving me lagging headaches, too bad i cant refund now
+1 if it can be used to equalize ringtone as well~~~
nice, but still prefer winamp because of one thing: playlist sync.
i don't wanna have to make my playlists on my phone. i'd rather make them on my pc and sync them to my phone.
hope the dev integrates that function, and i'll switch.
installed the app to check it out and it's reading the playlists from the music i synchronized with winamp. looks like i'm switching after all.
Song lyrics
Is there (or will be) any built-in function to search lyrics?
Alternatively, how can I display lyrics file (.lrc) into the application?
Great application, anyway.
This app is specifically listed as supporting WMA files, but it does not Does anyone know of a good music player that actually plays wma files?
new build available with lots more features added including more widgets, lockscreen widget, skip control from wired mic button etc....
New build 113 definitely is nice.
too bad this version will expire in a couple of weeks.
And strange, most (but not all) of the album arts (I named them AlbumArt.jpg) are not showing on the play screen in this built. build 68 worked just fine.
anyone got similar experience?
any solutions?
i already tried "clear albumart cache and reload media"
Sound @ max realy sucks bigtime, really don't get it i didn't even use a EQ but the basses where destroyed and even if i turned down my carradio the basses still sucked so the phone just destroys it... (3 days ago, uninstalled immidiatly because i ain't gonna listen to **** )... It almost looks like the sound @ max in powerAMP is equell to 200% the loudness of stock player. really annoying!
Wil try i later on maybe it was a bug but i got it and my roommate with his Desire had it to
The app is very nice, with the right settings it gives a great sound quality.
jaapschaap - you have to adjust to Bass Tone it gives too much bass, try my settings, but don`t change the volume from the app button, it has a bug, when you touch it it increases the bass tone to max although the bass tone button stays in the same place, you have to touch the tone button in order to restore it.

Grumble grumble, doesn't the DAC inside the galaxy s have a hardware EQ? Is there any software available that actually uses it, not just software EQ?
Its supposed to be a five band parametric, if my memory serves me correctly.
I am using powerAMP to listen music. When i want to change next song with my bluetooth earphones, Musicplayerpro appears and both of the two players begin to play. if i uninstall musicplayerpro it is okay but i want to keep both players in my phone.
When I reconnect my headset the app automatically launches, Is there a way to prevent this ? I dont want unecessary applications launching automatically and wasting resources/battery

I believe you can change that in the settings for PowerAMP (under Headset Options).

Find the option in Musicplayerpro to turn headset controls on/off and turn it off. With Android it appears that you have to turn headset controls off for all music players except the one you want active otherwise you'll get the behavior you described.

The only options we have there is pause when disconnected or resume when disconnect, theres no option that says dont auto launch the app.
Build 204 (available in Market) has the option to "Resume on Headset Connect".

GUIDE - How to improve music quality

It seems that I've found the perfect combination of eq settings to help improve sound quality. The issues most face with the standard music player configuration is having to put up with tinny sounds and a flat soundstage which simply put - degrades your sound! And most become oblivious to the low quality sound over time. How horrible! But with a few changes sound can be clearer and after applying these tweaks, you will certainly hear the difference. With a few settings taken from here and there at xda and blended together and tweaked, my music played via the galaxy s2 really does now sound alot better.. A result of a clearer low end, no apparent distortion at max volume (and oh boy is it louder, thanks to volume+) , a more apparent seperation between the mid ranges/highs.. For once there's a distinction in the music and the separation of sounds can be heard rather than the usual muffle. I've tested this combination of apps/settings with both high quality flac files and 256kbps mp3s and it certainly brings out the colour in each song. I produce/compose film/trance music so I'd like to think I've a good ear.
Right, where do I begin.?
You will need 3 apps - Power amp, Equalizer and Volume +, installed to begin. Each application is free. The purpose of each app is as follows.
Poweramp - A top music player with eq functionality
Equalizer - To further enhance eq levels
Volume+ - To give the sound more legroom and boost sound levels
Power amp - http://market.android.com/details?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer
Equalizer - http://market.android.com/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.equalizer
Volume + - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=645858&d=1309854453
Simply apply the settings as shown in the below screenshots.. Follow exactly for best result.
Poweramp -

Equalizer -
Volume+ -
If you find the highs a tad too sharp, drop the treble slightly in Poweramp.
To achieve a deeper bass, in volume+, set the bass to +5 but try not to go much higher as the sound quality will impair.
To higher the volume use Poweramp and higher the amp slider by a tiny amount and to avoid distortion do not let it go past the midway mark.
Drop the 8k slider down in poweramp to help reduce the sharp frequencies, which can hurt the ears sometimes running at a high volume. If using external speakers rather than headphones, these settings may push the sound to distortion, so be sure to set volume+ to external speaker mode for best possible effect.
Currently using Volume+ may lead to fc's when making a call, even though the fc occurs, the effect of Volume+ should still be active, currently theres no workaround as i'm aware.
If you believe you've found an even better combination of settings then please share! Just remember to post which earphones/headphones you're using.
Update : download "audioboost sgs2" from the market and set the desired volume level to around "82" for a cleaner amplified sound, this works better than volume+ for most people.
Please give feedback whether or not these settings work well with your headset.
.. Edited..

good job. Sound good now. Since my Shure headphones are capable of making deep base and mid base, i increased the Bass in Poweramp to the 3 o'clock position instead of your at 12 o'clock, and Also 5+ in bass in Volume+
Bass UGH UGH UGH .

Wow, nice guide, now my phone sound better then before!!
I like the effect this combination gives.
BUT I have major issue with Volume+ and not sure whats the reason for it. It crashes once I plug in my headset.
using PowerAMP + Eq + VolumePlus
it looks like a conflict between Equalizer and Volume+
anyone having similar issues?
yeah, it happen to me too, but mine was when i am dialing someone and when its connected then the error will appear(happen once in a while) but i just press the force close its still able to connect but its not a major problem for me as its still work its just annoying

Untick Resume/Pause on headset disconnection/connection in Poweramp headset options.
Already tested it - pausing or resuming setting off doesnt affect it. Another thing is volume+ will crash when changing settings while the Eqalizer preset is enabled. Preset disabled - everything works fine...

Tweaks work great thanks! Not quite as nice as my Galaxy Tab with Voodoo but SGS2 sounds definitely less flat and less muddy. Volume+ doesn't seem to actually do anything though to sound quality so I might just ditch that.
this setting wont work nice when i plug in an external Bose speakers... Bose speakers suck with builtin preamp and low bass output power. I changed to "external speaker" preset in the equalizer and it works great!
Hi,
testing now
I find Volume+ does not make a big diff
Having a good sound is not an easy one on that device,
Thank you for sharing your findings
I used to configure only PowerAmp - my best music player ever !
Adding a little tast of "equalizer" seems to provide something better
Will continue listening an see
Thanks !

Rockbox for Android - Unleash your music!

Sure some of you have heard or even used Rockbox before, my Sansa Clip rockboxed sounds off the hook! Well you may or may not know Rockbox is also available for Android, unstable officially but some clever geniuses have already ported it and made an application for this some time ago.
Sure it may not have a fancy interface but I can live with that! We all know the SGS2 is not one of the greatest sounding phones out there especially after Supercurio magically enhanced the first version of the device with his great Voodoo control! Samsung let us down in v2 by getting rid of the Wolfson chip, however not all is lost, as users have discovered KI3 firmware 2.3.5 and kernel improves sound compared to previous versions!
Pair it up with this app and prepare to enjoy some loud decent sounding music! Well that depends on what your ears are wearing! My collection of headphones sound great.
Credits to RockBox for their commitment in bringing us better sound, and credits to Rasher for his app!

Give it a try, this has it's own EQ which is highly customisable. Even on stock settings with the new KI3 kernel and my headphones it sounds good.

It's soooo sweet. Now that I almost lost all hope for SGSII's audio this little Rockbox port comes up. Sound quality is so much better than with any other player/dsp. Thanks a lot, nikzDHD for the tip and the Rockbox crew for this wonderful app.

it sounds just a bit cleaner than poweramp, as I've said before though my biggest draw to poweramp is being able to assign EQ settings to different albums. Really helps for quiet tracks

Yes, to my ears it's exactly that - cleaner, more realistic sound. Bass is definitely more punchy and tighter. There's more background detail. As if they somehow improved the whole headphone amp hardware of SGSII. Don't know how they did it but can't complain Some records sound maybe a bit dry compared to stock player or PowerAmp but even then I just can't resist the clearer presentation of Rockbox. The real downside is that I'm starting to wonder how much more I'm missing from the music using a crappy (SQ-wise) phone and fairly cheap IEMs

We know that our Galaxy Ace hasn't a large volume receiving calls, notifications, messages, headphones ...
Personally I think it's very hard to tell you the phone is ringing at sites with little noise, for example whether someone sent me a whatsapp (it's also depends on the ear of each)
I've been looking for many sites how to increase the volume to my Ace and I've seen that is a mess!!
so, I've decided to open this new thread to unify all kinds of reviews, comparisons, and experiences, about which is the best way to increase / improve the volume of our Galaxy Ace.

LOL! I had completely forgotten! so here, added!
..and how about for incoming calls, notifications...?
Thanks Cryss for participating and providing your opinion! :good:
for me Beats Audio is still the Best on my Ace :fingers-crossed:
Why is this post here ? Go post it in the general section. I use ALSA currently but I don't prefer much of a variation. It can rip the drums off your ears if you're on earpiece. Use low sound while listening to music on ear phones & keep your ears reserved for future use

Thank you for your participation
DSP Manager, speaker tab, custom equalizer, pull up all bars to top. Don't give any other option. Test with incoming call.
Volume + is the best way

Hey do we need to uninstall Beats Audio to flash this mod?
I used DSPManager + Megabass Ace mod.. that's enough fun for me..
No matters which mod you use, overall sound quality remains the same.
Audio mods only change values to "enhance" certain low-med-high frequencies.
All depends in the type of head-earphones you have in order to choose the best audio experience.
In my experience (I'm an audio engineer, composer, musician) DSP Manager 2 from CM10.1 is the best passive audio enhancer. As the name dictates, its a Digital Sound Processor software running over the Digital/Analog coding of sound with the ability of manually adjusting frequencies and even apply compression to the whole audio which can reduce the amount of saturation in loud velocities (volume).
Cheers

Is it possible to theme the stock LG Music Player?

Subject says it all... After trying several different music players and dealing with lots of problems, I have found I really love the functionality of the stock LG player. The only thing is... it's PURPLE. :crying:

I'll check it out, thanks!
Have you tried the play music app? Originally I dismissed it and thought lg stock was the best music player same as you but after retrying play music I now think it's the best app.
I like the LG player but this purple thing is very ugly... I have the same question, is it possible to theme it? I tried Shuttle, good player but there is no 5x2 widget to put in my homescreen

Shortly after I posted this, I stumbled across the GoneMAD Music Player. I've since stopped using the LG player and Rocketplayer PRO that I had paid for. GoneMAD works flawlessly, has an awesome interface with tons of customization options, sounds great, and sends full song data to my car stereo over bluetooth without fail.
Highly recommend it!

I hate the look of it. Same with any playstore music player it looks very dingy compared to lg stock player or play music. But the customization on this thing is insane. I may end up using it just for that reason.

Surprised you don't like the look of it... I like the option to have the album art faded in the background.
Oh, also forgot to mention that I installed Viper4Android and it's improved the sound out of the phone by a lot.

I tinkered with that setting, didn't see any difference. Didn't see the difference between black and gradient background either.
Also I don't know anything about equalizing. Would it be worth figuring out how to use the app if I use $20 earphones lol.

yeah, i like the idea of having album art faded in the background and on the lockscreen, but dude tell me how to make one album art for all of the music, i don't like the stock album art, it's really ugly, and i have like 300+ songs and can't change every song's cover art!! it will take a whole year for me !! is there is any fast way to change the cover art ??

If you have root, it's a simple install. Check it out and see what you think, it's just a matter of playing with the different built-in EQs and other settings, like ViperBASS and ViperCLARITY. I don't use the ViperBASS because I'm playing my music through a stock stereo in my car, but the ViperCLARITY makes it sound awesome!
