[Q] Problem accessing external HDD with both SMB and CIFS - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello everyone,
I need help with a very peculiar problem that has popped up recently. Before, I was able to stream video files on my external hard drive connected to my Windows 7 PC, both through CIFS and SMB through ES File Explorer. Yesterday, I found that I can do neither! It is frustrating because all my shows are on the external hard drive. Here are the error messages I get through SMB and CIFS:
SMB: I generally like SMB better because it is less buggy and doesn’t require kernel support. Before, I could access the external HDD through my PC’s IP but now I cannot seem to connect to the external HDD or any folders I’ve shared that is on the external HDD. It is weird because I can connect to shared folders that are on the local HDD via SMB, just not the external HDD. When I try to connect to the external HDD an error message pops up saying “cannot connect” along with a list of possible reasons:
1. Wifi is off (it's not)
2. SMB server is out of network scope (??)
3. The IP is invalid (uhhh I can browse the IP)
4. Blocked by the firewall (maybe... how do I fix?)
5. SMB service is off (why would it be off for only external HDD?)
CIFS: This one is even weirder. When I try to mount it I get a “out of memory” error. WTF??? Again this error only occurs on external HDDs.
Let me know if you have any suggestions for fixing the android phone or maybe fixing something in Windows 7?

What kernel are you running? I can use ES File Explorer without an issue however I believe CIFS has to be in the kernel and I think most kernels do not include it. I don't know why since it would be handy. Certainly would for me. I've never found a definite answer to why CIFS is not cooked in with kernels.

If I recall correctly, CIFS support is implemented in the very latest Trinity kernel, Alpha56. You can check the Der Kernel thread in the Dev section for more info.

Bluetooth FTP and Windows 7?

Anyone had any luck with the built in Bluetooth FTP feature and Windows 7?
Pairing the device then going to the newly created bluetooth folder in "Computer" just gives a connection error, device doesn't even prompt me to try and allow.
I don't want to use third party stuff.
Ideas?
Thanks.
Nevermind, A reboot of Windows and the Desire got it working, although I couldn't copy over the default music folder that came on the built in memory card because some reason the FTP connection found all mp3s as extension-less and so couldn't copy or manipulate them.
On the same note, linux of course had no problem with Bluetooth FTP and could copy and move files easily from within Ubuntu 10.04.
I would image it would be the same for Mac users too, just Windows gets a hard time, and it clearly isn't the phone to blame.

[Q] Can't write to my USB memory stick.

I recently bought OTG USB cable so that I could use my usb stick or external hdd for additional storage (since we dont have an external mini sd card slot). When I connect my usb stick (FAT32), it appears in settings-->storage properly. The ES File Explorer app also shows a new folder storage/usbdisk... So everything looks fine. But I can only read to it, not write... the app gives me the error "failed to copy file". Also happens if I try to move something with the usb stick.
Now, I've tried quite a few things. I tried root explorer, and just like es file explorer, it also cannot change the permission to rw (now it's stuck on ro). I tried different apps (stickmount and USB OTG Helper), and both didn't make it work. They did however, make my hdd (NTFS) work, as added some other folders that had the proper permissions, because without those apps, my hdd would show up empty in the usbstick folder with es file explorer.
USB diagnoses app gives me a positive response too...
What in the world could be the problem???
P.S.
My system:
Kernel: AK Kubo (stable 4.2.20)
ROM: AOKP Jellybean mr1 milestone 2
GSM Samsung Galaxy Nexus

OK, after spending quite alot more time trying things, I found something that solved the problem. Quite silly of me I didn't think of it earlier, (I was convinced the kernel supported it properly) but yeah... I upgraded my kernel to the experimental version (Diamond). It's newer. Apparently, USB support was not so strong in the "stable" version. This newer kernel can even read NTFS without third party apps, but not write to them. Hope this helps anyone.

[Q] Mount network drive in JB/KITKAT ?

Hey, I kno its possible to view network shares and access them on android with apps like solid explorer and es explorer, but is there any way to mount a network share into jb/kk do that other apps can access the data natively (like poweramp for example) ?
I vaguely recall it working on my nexus s on ICS , but I can't seem to find any information about JB/KK. I tried both CIFS manager as well as the other mount manager app and neither of them seem to work. Anybody with any suggestions ?
You would need a kernel with loadable module support, Google removed it.
This is a good place to start:

Hi all, if your goal is simply to play music and video from your NAS to your android device, you can use Kodi (xbmc) that can access cifs path directly!
I would like other apps to be able to access the contents of a shared network drive.

[Q] Connecting Kodi on Fire TV to Mac on the Same Network

How do I go about connecting Kodi on my FireTV to my Mac on the same network? I'd like to back up Kodi and save the backups externally on my Mac, but I'm not sure how to access my Mac from the Fire TV. For example, when I go to the "Install from Zip File" window, I don't see any references to my Mac's hard drive listed in the sources there.

You can try NFS or FTP (however ftp makes your password visible in Kodi's sources list). SMB and AFP shares never seem to work right for me on OSX with Kodi. Actually NFS can be a pain too.
You may just what to push the file to the SDcard with adbfire
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786505
To add the sdcard to the Install from zip file source selection list in Kodi:
System>File Manager>Add source>Browse>select root filesystem>select sdcard
click ok
give it a name like #sdcard, the Hash tag is only to put it at the top of the source list alphabetically.
You can delete the zip file when you are done with ADBfire too.
I appreciate the reply. Yes, I've been using the SDcard as my connection point, but I was hoping to be able to connect my Fire TV to my Mac so I could schedule Backup to automatically store backups off of the Fire TV. In lieu of my Mac, I attempted to use my Dropbox account, but ran into difficulties there as well, which I'll post in a new thread.
Create an smb (windows) share on your Mac. If you want to use a password for the share create a user for network shares or use your own (gives a warning about not secure password storage). Otherwise enable the guest account on your Mac for network shares and add your destination folder to the list of shares in system settings.
Sent from my GT-I9195 using XDA Free mobile app
Success! Thank you, superkoal, for pointing the way. I was able to finally connect my Mac to my Fire TV.
The only bummer is the Backup program add-on still throws an error when I try and do a backup to my Mac. (I thought it might be a problem with using Dropbox as a backup location). But at least I'm finally connected, and that will certainly come in handy elsewhere.
Many thanks!
Could someone please post this method with more details for us newbs? The only method I have been able to figure out (and I've tried LOTS of guides and a parade of programs) is using SSHDroid and Yummy FTP on my Mac. Something is lacking here as if you send a large file it seems to hang at 2.14 GB and never complete. Don't know if that's a SSHDroid issue or not.
Wound up moving to es file explorer and have a more stable connection with no issues sending that large file. Guide is on my site as it's loaded with pictures. I can't post links so go to hackthatphone.com, click tutorials, click the fire tv icon and you'll see the short guide list I have.
My next goal: learning how to unmount and remount an external hard drive through a powered hub, if it's even possible....

Your usb stick is not a computer, it does not need to read your phone with MTP protocol.
The phone should provide power to the USB stick, exactly as it is saying, so that your phone can read the contents of the USB stick.
Get a File Manager like FX to transfer items to and from your USB stick.
I have the same problem. It always says usb charging and I could not transfer pictures to my usb using the usb-c/usb adaptor. I tried using file manager app but I get confused with all these asking permissions and I end up unable to transfer anything. I never had this problem with my S7 edge before. I tried connecting the phone directly to the mac using android file transfer but could not connect. I would really appreciate if someone can give us a more detailed steps on how.

I tried that I have ES file explorer like "edsol" said it won't mount the stick because it's in charging mode
I tried several time to switch it off of charging mode but always flips back after a few seconds.
if "edsol" has the same problem then I guess it's not just my phone........there must be a fix for this??
I had the same situation, and I had to format the USB stick in "exFAT" to be able to copy files to it. NTFS is supported only for reading, but not for writing.
So check that your USB stick is not NTFS.
FAT32 and exFAT are the same, the difference is that exFAT doesn't have the FAT32 limitations (maximum file size of 4 GB)

Thanks...but it is exFat......I did a reformat just incase.......still a no go ??
you probably need some file manager to do what you want, Android sucks when it comes to manual file management.
Anyway I have ES file explorer loaded on my phone, so plugged in USB c to USB2 adapter, put in 32 GB FAT32 memory stick, ES file exp. open up and I transferred couple files from stick to SD, just to test it if it works. It did, but you would have to pay me a lot of money to do it on regular basis, so awkward. I just plug my phone to PC and use windows click and drag to move files around. Now I run into problem, when I was transferring my pictures, couple days ago, F???? Android lock my sd card for no reason (F????? Google is messing SD cards on phones since at least kitkat). I had to fix sd and take write protect off, but I'm sure it's Google not Samsung. Anyway, it works like a charm, just watch out for Google's broken permissions showing it's ugly head.
What File Explorer are you using? Some of them can't write to external storage because of Marshmallow permissions.
"My Files" of Samsung worked for me while "ES File Explorer" didn't work (before root)
I used ES File Explorer, I'm sorry I said wrong in my previous post, I moved couple files to phones DCIM folder, not SD, it's so awkward and I just wanted to see if it works at all, it did, I confirmed the files were moved, before deleting them. So actually I don't know if it would work on SD card, but I would never ever transfer files like that: I would use my pc laptop for direct transfer between SD and stick. So the concept I described works, but as far as permissions to particular folders go, they're so messed up and don't even want to test it again against SD. In theory it should work at least for transfer to root directory, since card is not protected, may not work for transfer to folders created by other programs due to permissions. At some point I may have to root this phone just to fix those stupid permissions, but I haven't used Marshmallow until now, so not sure how broken those permissions are here.

I've tried a few file programs including My Files..........but the usb stick isn't recognized because it stays in charging mode
so can't even attempt to transfer anything....this is frustrating !!
