Is it safe to sell my GS2 rooted? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

It's rooted and running custom ROM. Everything works, that's not the problem, but I'm afraid of what would happen if the person who buys it receives an OTA update from T-Mobile. If they installed it would it brick the phone?

Tell them when you sell. If you care so much take 15 mins restore to stock via odin and sell.
If they upgarde from odin they will be safe but they cant do via kies air. So better restore to stock before you sell.

As bikrame said it's better to restore it to stock in order to avoid any provlems, and that way if the buyers feels like rooting or doing anything to it he will be the sole accountable for it!
Make sure you restore it to the latest version of your carrier though
Good luck for the sale

T-Mobile update notification not going away, but i'm rooted + custom ROM

I just rooted and flashed beast mod on my gs2. An hour after using it, T-mobile popped up in my notification tray with a new update. I'm assuming this is 2.3.6 and eventually the dev's will develop or update their roms.
I just want to make sure that I shouldn't update my phone this way, or I will be bricked?
i dont think it will brick you, but it will unroot you.

Juggernaut v3.7 and Tmobile software update????
I am using Juggernaut v3.7 ROM, and my phone recently constantly show Message about upgrade the software from Tmobile. What should I do next? Flash stock rom 2.3.6 to get rid of Tmobile upgrade? and then can I flash Juggernaut v3.7 back to my phone?
Is there any way to disable (inside the code or build.prop file) the upgarde notification?

T-Mobile update service
Can I do the T-Mobile update while rooted on a custom rom?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
This is going to be a hot item for most of us with rooted phones. Simply no way of knowing what will happen should we let the update go through. And just to be safe, most of us would prefer to cancel the update.
I followed someone else's advice and used Titanium Backup Pro to:
- wipe data for "Device Manager"
- "freeze" the same application
The nag is gone. I reckon this method should work for everyone with rooted phones.
Otherwise, we'd need to wait to respective ROM teams to release their own patches etc.
TB team should see a nice uptick in app purchases in next few days. The app is well worth it, so if you been on a fence, get it now, $6 well spent.
[Q]OTA Update but i'm rooted?
I just got the ota update. It says it's going to automatically update my phone in 24 hrs. Is this going to mess my phone up? I am currently rooted with. Bombradier rom. Do I need to do anything? Thanks

i am rooted with stock rom and receive the update, np at all. In your case, you have a different rom and not stock. odin probably is the best bet.
bought sgs2 last weekend and rooted using superoneclick and at the end of the day, receive ota update and update my sgs2 and i forgot that i am rooted. i left my phone to finish updating and when i came back, its up and have 2.3.6 uVKL1, did not receive any problem. battery great, wifi calling is there. im just surprised it let me update even though my phone is rooted. btw stock rom, stock kernel just rooted.
I think I'll just wait until somebody comes out with an official sticky solution because I didn't flash any ROM to mine, I just rooted it.... I don't know what to do either... Until someone posts a solution there will be several posts pertaining to this subject

Thanks for posting this. I tried this method and it works great.

How do I find out if I have the original kernel from my carrier?

I bought a phone from Craigslist and it is in great condition, very happy with it.
But the seller told me all I had to do was flash any ROM and I would be set.
Of course, wiping the dalvik and cache files, first, etc...
But one thing I remember reading was, before flashing a new ROM I should Odin the phone to stock settings.
How do I go about finding out if the kernel that's on the phone now is proper?
Or do I just get the kernel files and Odin them back on my own?
(never Odin'd before)
Thanks in advance.
Best bet is to Odin back to stock ics and reroot and install cmw file. That way u can be fully sure of what u have. Starting always from scratch is best way to do things

Do you mean FH13? The reason it isn't taking the update is because it has a custom recovery. The device must have stock recovery, and in my experience, no removed stock apps if running stock w/root.

You can just save the hassle of all this stock recovery if you want... by using this one click (non rooted) update to FH13
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835033
You should be able to find the complete one click odin method that does not do a data wipe. So of you upgraded to fh13 and want to go back to ff18. Then find the one click no data wipe and that may do it. If you want tl go back to el29 do the same thing. However going back from ics to without a data wipe could prove faulty. But you could odin back to ff18 then do a titanium back up to back up all apps and data. Then do a complete odin based wipe back to el29 then try and restore via titanium. That may give you the all around solution you guys are looking for. But it's all theoretical have not tried this exact method myself but should work.

Is FH13 being pushed by Samsung or something? I was wondering why the notification looked a bit different from previous ota's then I noticed the update is coming from the update Samsung software section and not the update firmware like in the past. Just curious since that option never gave us an update before lol

[Q] Anybody successfully updated to JB 4.1 through KIES?

I just tried to update my ICS Galaxy S2 to JB 4.1 through Samsung Kies, and the update process took a dump on me and I spent the better part of the last two hours getting the phone up and running again. The phone is rooted, and the recovery installed is Clockworkmod touch. My battery was right at about 51% when I started, so it may have had something to do with it im not sure. Anybody successfully updated? If so can you please share your story? Thanks.
No problems for me, but I returned everything to stock first. Stock recovery included. Might've been your issue
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
I had no problem updating a few days ago. Was running stock rooted ICS with CWM non-touch recovery. It took close to 2 1/2 hours including updating Kies, but it worked fine. My battery was probably closer to 85% (and I have a big aftermarket battery).
I did a few days back also. No problems when I ran it for the day.
Officially, I think the battery should be at 80% for Kies to let you update, but that is not important now.
My first attempt bricked the phone, I tried taking it to a third PC for the emergency recovery and it did not work on that PC at all.
I got a replacement phone instead of trying again, but on the 3rd and final PC it worked fine.
The first 2 PCs had windows XP while the final was W7, I don't think windows was the issue, but on the first 2 I did sometimes have issues detecting the phone, so I unplugged and plugged it back in a few times for it to connect. I think that was the key to the problem.
On the final machine it connected fine first time and every time. I still don't know why this happened. I have 2 more phones to update and am wondering if I should try the first 2 machines again or play it safe and use the one that worked?
Good luck.

You will lose root, but it's very easy to re-root. I rooted four T989s in about ten minutes.
Using kies, went to update my wife's phone the other day with it having like 20% battery and it gave me an error message before starting saying my battery was to low. When it came to my rooted phone I used Odin and lost root. It was pretty easy for me to root it back and start installing custom ROMs.

Just did it today and it worked fine. Had to reinstall a newer version of Java for Kies to upgrade itself properly, but once I did that it was smooth sailing.
Hi all,
now please don't laugh: what exactly is the advantage of getting JB over ICS?
thanks.

I managed to soft brick my phone on the first attempt to use kies. Fortunately, the phone was sick on Odin download mode. I used Odin too flash a new ics image and the second time, the kies to 4.1.2 worked just fine. My original OS version was ics from the tm ota update on a new phone.

There are a bunch of improvements, they took out a lot of bloatware and fixed a bunch of glitches so JB is a lot faster and smoother than ICS. Also they brought back some features that were taken out of ICS like a Contacts button in the phone (I never understood why they took it out in the 1st place)...

I was on a rooted Stock ICS and I used Kies for the update. It was successful, but of course I lost root. Since then the phone has been faster, smoother and has better battery life. I still have not manged to re-root using either CWM nor TWRP, even after re-flashing the stock JB via ODIN, (I am still working on this).

Just to be safe you should always odin back to the last stock rom before doing an update through kies. You dont have to but I get nothing but pasper weights if I dont. I never had a problem with kies with a completly stock phone though. And I think thje batt is 80% but I always charge it to 100% just in case.

Ok means wait
Yeah, the only people who should be taking the update are the ones who have never rooted the phone, and never plan on rooting. If you even have a .001% thought about rooting, you should hold off and wait for a workable solution to this. DON'T DECIDE TODAY THAT "WELL I'LL BE OK WITHOUT ROOT" JUST TO TAKE THIS UPDATE, AND THEN IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS, YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND BECAUSE YOU MISS YOUR ROOT.
Also if you try to root this latest OTA stock Rom and your phone gets stuck, then you might be stuck for a while, as there is not a proven way yet to fix it. As has been shown in some of the other theads, there is no way to downgrade it to a working state, and there is no official software (from Kies) to flash over it with. I'm still waiting to hear that someone was able to flash a custom Rom, as this has not yet been confirmed either.

Oh now I hear about this...
I hate Samsung now for creating all of these extra blocking "features"...
Why would they want to make the phone brick when trying to downgrade from 4.3?
That sounds like something Apple would do but I expected more from Samsung.
I guess now I can't send it in for my scheduled warranty. sigh.

Like the other guy said Nandroids, ROMs, etc. Plus the bugs are really immense on 4.3. The number one reason is because it's my phone and I want to run 4.1.2 not 4.3 but unfortunately it soft bricked when I tried to downgrade. I don't know why samsung added these features that are causing bricks.
