first, does anyone know where i can physically walk in and purchase a usb otg cable? office dept, radio shack, eb games, wal-mart, best buy. i really dont trust just googling for something physically in a store. so if anybody has found would could u please let me know where u found it. other question, is it the rom or the kernel that enables usb host mode? or was it an ics/gb thing? im wondering if a kernel flash on blazer rom will get it working. thanks for any help.
i thought i seen one at the sprint store, i may be incorrect on that though.
ICS = No. Gingerbread = maybe
The ICS roms have it disabled AFAIK. (I've tested on CM9).
It *might* work on a Gingerbread rom but my general impression is that the kernel support isn't there. I got my adapter off Ebay and I don't think there's anything special one brand you have to have to make this work. But I could be wrong.
really? i was under the impression we deff had decent support for usb host mode but by after reading ur reply it seems as if that is completely opposite

It doesn't work on any rom.

It was originally marketed as having the potential to have USB Host but it has never actually been implemented. My understanding is that it could be done but it would require a custom kernel to make it happen.

Will this application work on our device? I've searched and everything seems to say that there is no OTG in stock kernel. Some posts lead me to believe that certain roms have OTG enabled. If so, which ones?

Do any of the ICS leaks/releases thus far support USBOTG or USB host mode?
Our phone is supposed to be capable of it, but according to the threads I have read so far it is not working (at least prior to ICS).
The combination of working USB host and running Ubuntu / BackTrack5 would be awesome!
bumpidy bumpidy
It worked for a while in international sgs2 but they disabled it for some reason.... E4gt has never had it as it's not in the kernel... Maybe cm9 will have it but they haven't said yet ...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
i used to do it all of the time on the gingerbread roms but from what i can tell on mine running the FB17 leak, it will work if you pay for through sprint so we may just have to wait for the update to come out an some devs to make a rom.
What exactly do you mean that we may have to pay for it through Sprint?

since this is just the leaked stock its the same concept as the stock o/s when you got the phone, sprint wont let you use it without paying for the hotspot plan but when the devs get to work on the official release they change it so the you dont have to pay for USB hotspot.
I believe our ninja friend here had miss understood the question.
Mr Ninja, usbotg/USB host is a utility that allows the ability to use an adapter cable to connect things like a flash drive, USB keyboard/mouse, external hard drives, ect.. This was a feature that Samsung advertised that many of us (including myself) were extremely excited for, only to find out that Samsung/sprint had removed the ability from the Kernal. he waswondering if they had added it back with Ics.

Exactly!

was talking to jamcar who was trying to incorporate USB hosting with his DARKSTAR rom. he said that the files are included in ics kernels but there must be some specific drivers for our phone that need to be coded to get it working. he may or may not be working on it but i offered to test for him if he gets something going

I remember seeing the references to the USB OTG files back in the GB releases, but as most people found out, references doesn't mean the whole setup is working.
So are we basically at the mercy of Samsung to release the needed drivers then? If anyone is currently developing them, I would be more than happy to test... Although I need to aquire/solder the cable first

Just saw that Darkstar v1.0.1 has Usb host listed in the features! Anyone get a chance to give it a go yet?
EDIT: As far as I can tell, references exist but it still isn't working...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
yup. i jumped on it as soon as i saw it in the list. its present in the ics kernels, but as for the necessary drivers/etc they are yet to be coded. its nice to see the demand for USB OTG growing. if it was this strong when zedomax was devving for us we might have gotten something (he started on a kernel for Tmo GS2 that supported it)
Tried Calk's E4GT 2 v1.0 Beta 3 last night, and it doesn't support USBOTG yet....

More bad news, Bluetooth HID doesn't work right in ICS. The menu and back buttons don't work on my mouse and the home button on the keyboard no longer functions.

No luck with calk 2 v1.1 either

Hopefully someone comes out with a ROM that supports OTG. I really miss using my keyboard an mouse, lol.... Also would the HDMI to Mini fail to work as well because of the lack of OTG support?
I heard there is a new build today (fc13). Hopefully that will have otg. If not, maybe in cm9 soon or we beg zedomax to return.

agree
I wish this subject would get more attention then maybe we could use our expensive devices' full potential.
Yes, it would be nice to have OTG support. I really would like to use my phone for open accessory development. Guess I will have to use my Xoom for now.
I'm not sure if this is an issue with code not being dropped yet, but hdmi out has not worked on ANY ICS roms thus far. Does anyone else know about this? On Gingerbread it works. This is very important to me b/c I sync my ps3 controller to my phone and then line out to the flat screen, making it where I don't even have to touch my phone, which is awesome b/c the screen buttons are extremely hard to use on most games. I don't think most people know that you can even do HDMI out b/c I have never seen it in development, and when I bought the phone, it didn't even say that HDMI was a feature on Sprints site. This could be b/c you have to buy an adapter(micro USB to HDMI) unlike the EVO that has a seperate micro HDMI port. Any ideas guys?
Yeah you need an mhl adapter that then needs to be powered by another micro usb.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
HDMI out does not work on any of the ics aosp roms for this phone and most if not all galaxy sii phones with aosp ics. Would be nice if we can get mhl support for aosp but it may never happen.

yes agreed.. it is called a MHL adapter.. ive had it working on stock ics but not on aosp.. havent tried with cm9a4 but i do know on cm9a3 it has been a known issue and they are aware it doesnt work.. not sure if there has been any progress yet but gaming on your big screen will need to be put on hold.. at least you can still stream video via twonky or other app through your ps3 as long as you have a wireles network at home

Its not a bug on CM9 its just a feature that has not been implemented. If you look at the github for CM9 there is just a placeholder at the moment.

I'm not sure if some of you guys read all of my post before answering, but obviously I have the mhl adapter and have it powered or it wouldn't work on gingerbread lol!! But thanks to the last 2 replies, that cleared it up for me.

What stock ICS did you have this working on? I flash every ROM that comes out but I gave up on trying after it didn't work on like 10 of them.

Here's what I know so far.
Originally I got the MHL adapter for my d710 Boost. The adapter is by Menotek. That didn't work for me. I tried it with the stock boost ICS rom FH29, FG31 and it was a no go. So then I flashed the phone with the Sprint ICS rom for the d710, the FI03 still nothing. All this time, when I would connect the phone to the tv, the "No Signal" message on TV would disappear but the screen remained dark, like it was getting video but there was no content to display.
So now I have gotten the Samsung recommended MHL HDMI Smart Adapter, part number EIA2UHUNBEGSTA. I got it today and at the time I was on the CM10 rom. That rom apparently has no support for MHL as of yet, which I didn't know. Needless to say I got no video to the TV. So then I flashed the Sprint ICS FI03 rom, and what beautiful surprise, got the video going on the TV. I also tried the adapter with the boost versions of ICS FG31 and FH29, both also worked in displaying video on the TV.
So my conclusion to this is that not all MHL adapters will work with all the phones that support ti, best to get the one recommended by the manufacturer of the phone, and that ICS does support HDMI out.
Hey all, I've been away from the forums for a while and it seems I have quite a bit of catching up to do.
I'm currently running Calkulin's E4GT.2.ROM.V1.6, I know, super old, and am at a loss as to what I should do in order to get myself up to speed with a more current ROM on the phone.
The Kernel version is [email protected] #3
At the moment I don't have a USB cord that'll connect to my computer, I merely have the cord that is attached to the wall charger so using my Desktop's Odin might not be possible.
I do have mobile ODIN though, so my question is, could anyone tell me what I should flash in order to get updated properly? It really is a bit daunting to plow through so many old threads to find what I need.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks all.

Sorry, I accidentally submitted before I finished typing. I edited the original.
You could download a rom that you think looks interesting, Odin the el26 kernel via mobile Odin, then wipe and flash said rom.
I'm confused, my wall charger came with a standard USB to micro cord. Did yours come with something different?
Also when flashing a rom follow the directions in the OP of that rom.
Is it possible to get the USB OTG cable to work on a ls970? I bought one and can't seem to get any devices to work. From what I understand, the phone is missing a 5v output and only a kernel can get OTG to work?
If this is the case, could someone please help me get in the right direction on getting this to work, or if its even worth it.
Rom: SuperNexus 2.0
Kernel: 3.4.0-gee_mako-dev

You are absolutely correct. The Nexus4 doesn't have otg support built in, but they solved it by adding support to a custom kernel and using a y-cable to get over the 5v output issue. Sadly, it looks like no one has accomplished this yet for us. I'm not sure on the specifics but every thread where someone was trying it for our lgog looks abandoned without any reason. I'm curious about this as well and that's the info I have been able to find.

Could be bad - but it's at least a starting place. Modify it to somehow work for us since our chipsets are so similar......
