Need Quick Answer - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

rooted with stock rom.
2.3.6
T989UVKL1
2.6.35.11
I want to install ICS but I don't know if I need to unroot. Thanks in advance.

I updated to ICS via Kies without UNrooting. It did not seem to be an issue. Then I rooted the ICS with the original root steps from galaxys2root.com It is not rooted on ICS

Forgot to mention, the ICS (at least for myself and a few others)...seems to be a little bit laggy. It has become better since I have let it sit for a while and do it's thing, and a couple of reboots, but I still think the Gingerbread ROM was "less laggy". Also, T-mobile made some changes to the ROM so that the wifi tethering apps (Barnacle, wifi tether, etc..) don't work. Someone has stated that they have been able to get them to work (see the thread in the Q&Q section), but I have not been able to duplicate the result.

Stock rooted kernel

I don't want to sound dumb here but this dinc2 is nuthing like my tbolt so I guess my question is when you flash any Rom will it chnge kernels to be able to overclock? Or do I have to flash a stock rooted kernel? If so could someone pm or post a link? I'm on gb 2.3.3 with a 2.6.35-9 stock rooted s-off.

Several of the new ROM's have overclocked kernals (should be listed in the Rom description). There are also kernals you can flash in the Dinc2 Development forum....TIAMAT for AOSD Rom's and Jcase has one for Sense Rom's. They both seem to work pretty well.

You don't need to back up, because restoring that won't make you "stock". You'll always have stock images to flash back to stock Android whenever you need to via your PC.

[Q] now this MAY sound stupid but...

so im on stock ICS. not rooted.
and i want android jelly bean.
now all i've seen is that you have to get CM10 to do it. but i don't like to use "non stock roms", so is there anyway I can still get jelly bean without using CM?
and if not CM, then i really dont wanna use other ROMs either.
so in other words, is there a way to get jelly bean on sprint s3 using the "official" look of the jelly bean OS (and not other ROMs' looks)?
thanks! (and yes ill root and do all that too)
Closest thing to stock jelly bean.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...T999UVDLI3 Leak Port) - 09/08/2012 (NEW BASE)
Right in the development section.... But read about the rom before flashing it. Make sure it's something you want on your phone.

Not yet, but there's someone saying they have some leaked update.zips. These will be leaked builds so when it goes official you'll either need to go custom or Odin back to stock. Either way it's the equivalent of a factory reset. It will also probably have annoying bugs. If you want a strong, stable build you'll just have to be patient. If this guy posts the update zips, feel free to give a go, but know you might as well be custom because stock recovery will probably reject the official OTA when it drops.

Does he not want clockwork recovery or cyanogenmod? Now I'm not sure which... Nevermind, reread.
so i guess CM10 is the safest bet.
now another question:
since jelly bean (stock) is going to be coming out from sprint update sometime in october, what will I have to do? do a factory install, install stock ICS? and then manually update to jelly bean?

Just to help assuage your fears, the creator of Cyanogen is like head developer for Samsung or something now. It's as safe as a stock build. I personally don't love CM roms and people seem to love aokp just as much. It's all personal preference. Just follow the rules of switching between because it can be a rocky ride. When in doubt Odin back to stop and rework from there. There is a lot of fun in it. Stock is stock, it's also made by developers who may or may not be as qualified or passionate as anyone on here. All up to you though.
I would just be patient and wait a month or 2 for the real official jb update Thayer sprint will send to your phone

1) flash ktoonez kernel. Check HW overlay in developer settings.
2)Don't know the issue your referring to.
3)download another keyboard if you need to because this only comes with one keyboard so you can't change the input method until you download another one
thanks a lot man!
new issues:
1) the battery is GOD awful! i lasted like 6-7 hours with about 1.5hrs screen time. i was used to 30hrs+ using stock ICS. is there a battery fix for this?
2) should i use SetCPU or will this make matters worse? juice defender is already pretty awesome
3) i fixed the swype thing
bump

flashing back and forth between custom rom and stock for updates?

I am wondering, when I had the Epic 4G, there was a stock rom that you would keep on the memory card and reboot in to that stock rom to enable profile, PRL updates. If I root my Samsung GS3, is there a stock rom that one can keep on the memory card and boot occasionally in to that rom to update PRL and profile? When I had my phone recently rooted, I of course could never update the rom, PRL or profile for Sprint.
You can update your profile and prl from any TW based rom. If you want to take an OTA (which I don't suggest) you'll need to be on the stock 4.1.2 rom, and stock recovery. I'll dig up some links for you but everything is in the dev section. You can always flash the latest updated rooted rom soon after release because one of our awesome devs will have it rooted in no time. Look for the stock rooted rom by Freeza and quick return to stock by billard412.

wow, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Out of curiosity I always use cyanogen mod roms, are they not TW roms?
They are not, cyanogenmod is aosp based.

Some flashing questions

Hi.
I have a T989 and I recently installed Cyanogenmod 10.2 on it (the official version). But I am not satisfied and want to go back to this ROM which I was originally running:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485218
Can someone please tell me what is the most effective method for doing this.??.
thanks
Will it work correctly??
I mean I am going from a higher android version(4.3.1) to a lower version(4.1.2).I've heard this can cause problems
Please clarify.Thx

That will work just fine. You might have to flash the version of gapps that corresponds to the version of Android you're installing to get Google Apps to work if they're not included.
I'd try out the final version of paranoid Android rom based on 4.4.4. It looks pretty sick.
Thanks a lot.:good:
Yeah sure I will take a look at Paranoid
One thing tho. From my experience anyway.
When flashing 4.1.2 touch wiz ONLY.....I always use these wipe scripts....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235141
And I flash 2.5.0.0 or 2.6.0.0 twrp first with odin or a flashable zip, then the wipes , then the ROM. Gapps are included in TW roms.
Then, if you're gonna flash 4.2.2 or higher aosp ROMs....update to a newer twrp, use its wipes and flash ROM then gapps.
You can try without any of that, but if you have issues....try it this way.
---------- Post added at 08:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:41 PM ----------
Don't use the wipes on anything but twrp 2.5 to 2.6.0.0 and never on 4.2.2 or higher....only 4.1.2 TW based ROMs.
