[Q] mobgifts.org (Possible browser hijack) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I open up Chrome to go visit xda on my Galaxy Nexus (Stock, Unrooted, converted to yakju through this thread), and I get a popup and redirected to mobgifts.org
I've attached a screenshot of this scam. I'm a little concerned that I may have somehow gotten hijacked...

I am getting this too, it started a couple of weeks ago, at first I thought it was a pop up from the site I had been visiting, but now it's happening with other sites. I am on a stock rom bell Canada Galaxy S II. Anyone have any ideas?

I have done some further testing and have discovered that the site hijack only comes up for me when I go to http://xda-developers.com .
It doesn't matter if I'm on wifi or cell data. I did a full factory reset, as well as re-flashing 4.0.4 again, and right after first boot, it still redirects me. I've even tried it without letting Android restore my phone.
Is it a problem with my phone, or with the xda site?

I got it on XDA as well but I am getting it on other sites with increasing frequecy, for example, icefilms.info, and demonoid.me. I dont think it's an issure with just the xda website

It's just a clever popup on the internet. A lot of people here will see it because a lot of people visit XDA.
There is nothing wrong with your phone and no need to panic or wipe.
There was also a thread about this yesterday.

uhhhhhhhh It's more than just on xda, I think it's a little more than just a clever pop up too.

I didn't say it was just XDA. I said a lot of people on this forum will see it because they visit XDA. It isn't infecting your phone with anything, it is a popup.

Could you post the link to the thread.
Any idea of how to get rid of it?

Fair enough haha. Here read this, there's some plausible causes.

Here is the other thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706480&page=2
I'm starting to think that it's Google Adsense serving these ads to people. All of these sites almost all use Google Adsense in some form to back fill ads.
This is happening to both Android and iPhones - only through mobile browsers. My guess is that this shady ass advertiser is targeting mobile browsers through Adsense.
From what I can tell, the ads are somehow attached to a site called blueAds.com, at least that's where they redirect from.

Not to say that I'm glad to hear, but at least there's some corroboration. I tried to do some research, and the whois record isn't helpful, and all that comes up for any search on mobgifts is a site called downocean(or something like that).
My Scam alarms just started going off.

I concur on that point, a lot of the searches on this topic. Bring the downocean name up again and again. Especially when you type how do I get rid of. Its definitely got some javascript going on, when I turn JS off I don't seem to get the the pop ups.

Marketplace

I don't get it.
If I use the Android XDA app, the Marketplace is visible in General. Using a real browser however, it's not. A quick search for a link into the Marketplace rears a permissions error. And all of this without being registered. So what gives? Something I'm missing here?

It's not the app...we've changed the permission on the Marketplace to not allow access to a user until he/she has made 8 posts. That 8 post level is also the same point at which you can post links. It's just an anti-spam measure. We found people were registering at XDA just to spam the site or the Marketplace. This helps.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
This is good to know. Long time lurker and finally signed up so I could post in the marketplace but alas!
Can someone link to the rules for gaining access to the Marketplace? I have 8 posts but still cannot see it. Tried logging out and back in but still nothing
For a while there I thought I needed to check my eye sight. Makes sense now.
Hard to achieve 8 post if you have nothing to say or to discuss or if everything is so well explained that you do not need answers
Maybe you could add a waiting time also. Lets say after 4 weeks you get to see the market, I highly doubt anyone would wait 4 weeks just to spam something.
It doesn't make sense that you can view the Marketplace before you sign up (and then have it dissapear after you are a member).
oh!! so thats why i couldnt c the marketplace
I am new here. it seem that this is an useful forum.
welcome to forums
Once you become an active/regula user all XDA features will be unlocked and you will be able to post in marketplace, this rule is to protect us from spammers/scammers
Ah I was wondering why I wasn't able to see that deal I saw anymore... guess I'm off to ask more questions.
I have been on the site reading for 6 months now trying not to poste but now i need to use the market so here is my 8th poste thanks.

Google has released Maps v6.0! Get it while it's hot!

Agreed, unless someone asks a blatantly dumb question to a dev theres no need for the remarks. The point of these forums are to spread knowledge of the android platform and not get all high school on people.

Mind your language here peeps..... Play nice!
If an app has permission changes you must manual update. Some people wouldn't check to update maps, like me, unless a post like this, so for someone it was actually helpful. This is why i'm kind of leary on coming back to xda, they might ban me for nothing again, or speakin up for myself so let me start off on the right track. leave the guy alone though, it was a good look, at least for me. THX YO
and im not noob i flash phones i did 2 more today, i just dont check MAPS one of the preinstalled apps to be updated... i only update like every 4 days or so and then the manuals like every 3 weeks

True. I'm thinking of moving to RootWiki. For the most part most mods are retards who don't read to see who provoked the issue to begin with. They grab the ban hammer and start going crazy while laughing maniacally.

Ok - so here's the deal. After reading through this thread, it's become obvious that a number of things are going on.
1. Forum Rules state search before posting. It is accurate to state that you should be searching the internet as well as XDA to do your due diligence before posting a question.
2. Rule #13 is always going to be a tough one
15. Keep posts/threads on-topic
Whilst a minor amount of off-topic posting may be overlooked, the general rule is your posts / threads must be relevant to the Forum / thread in which you are posting.
Click to collapse
3. There is a fine line between abusive/trolling posts and those that are seeking to be helpful, especially when you can have people who do not have English as their primary language.
So here's the deal. Don't feel like you need to take it upon yourself to be snippy and tell other users what they should do. Sometimes the best response is no response. Also, if you feel there is a post/thread which violates the Forum Rules, then report it and let us Moderators deal with it.
I am closing this thread as it's served it usefulness.

Intrusive ads? Post here!

The internet is full of advertisments and let's face it, almost every site that has an ounce of traffic uses ad revenue. The intention of xda is not to burden its members with ads that distract from the user experience. With that being said, if you have a problematic ad, please take a screenshot of the ad and post here so admin can take care of it. right now, that is the solution in place.
Thanks for your help in keeping XDA "intrusive ad free".

It doesn't happen all the time but I have this "mobprizes" redirect when visiting XDA.
Happened to me a few times so far, not sure if others are experiencing it.
Same as chazam ^^^^
First instance of it today. Web URL is mobprizes.com and the site header says 'Android Rewards'. Tried to browse XDA via Dolphin browser on Android and was auto-redirected to this spam page; you cannot press 'Back' or 'Exit' in the browser and have to click 'OK', whereupon another window opens asking you to enter your mob number (supposedly so they can contact you to sort out sending you your prize - which if you do a quick search on Google means you will receive plenty of premium rate text messages and no prize!).
Not sure what you folks can do but thought would mention it.
Incidentally, when performing a search re: this, one of the replies was on Yahoo Answers - when I clicked on this I was redirected to the same damn Android Rewards page!
I also noticed another forum in the search results is experiencing the same thing. Seems to be spreading.
Attached.
That ad at the bottom left corner just popped up from nowhere. I may not have captured it completely sry...
Edit: it's an IE rollover to view ad.
Hey everyone,
I have also created a forum where people (including myself) are experiencing similar problems.
Perhaps it would be a great idea to share our knowledge between the two forums and see what we can do to get rid of these annoying ads.
would of if i didnt have ad block

The JS alert window looks like that, since FF4.0. Type javascript:alert('test message') into the address bar.
Please remove this
I'm not really bothered by the ads so i dont need an ad blocker but this 'IE rollover to view' ad is being a pain in the rear.
Pls get rid of it.
Thanks.
Edit: started using ad blocker
i clicked a reply notification from an email sent by the forum
this is the page it took me to
i blanked out my location to stop aliens tracking me
No offence meant to anyone here, but I'm quite surprised at all of this. Adblocks for Chrome and Firefox are available easily, nobody uses IE anymore and if you're on XDA you probably have a rooted phone and should logically therefore have an adblock app. If you really dislike ads, there's no need to put up with them

I'm going to haveto agree with the OP in this one.
The advertising is becoming annoying and the re-registering method has been made to be difficult to see where the free option is...

I just had the same thing. I click on 'OK' or whatever it said when i should probably have just used the back button. It took me to the mobprizes thing which is clearly a scam. Hopefully just being taken to the site but not clicking anything wont have installed any malicious (i've literally no idea about android malware/viruses etc.).

Infinite ads - no back button

I have written this on the main interface page and received no answers.
On some pages I get to a point where no matter how many times I click on the back button, the page goes nowhere. When I long click on the back button it shows a list and there are pages of the same link that has the word ads in it. If I click on the bottom item in the list and long click on the back button again, the same list comes up. If I do this several times, I finally get to where I was to navigate to the page.
While I haven't actually taken the time to count, I am sure that there are over 40-50 page listings that come up from one page with only a few messages.
I am using IE9 and I want to know what I can do to stop this overtly evil behavior. I fully understand the need for ads but I don't see any good reasoning to hijack my page. If I click on a link in the page, I can then go back to normal. It doesn't happen on every page, just sometimes.
Since my bookmark to this site is on IE9 and not Chrome or Firefox and since I navigate to this site only on my desktop, I don't get the problem elsewhere. This behavior is only on this site. Some sites open pop under windows (also evil) and pop up windows (annoying) but this one really gets me angry.
Again, how does one get this bad beharior to stop???!!!
Please help:crying:
I just went back to the offending page and several times it only had two instances of the ads link. I then went to Chrome and it didn't happen at all. I know there is evil here because it is related to advertising. Is someone posting hiding something here? Is the site doing this to me? Is it an attack on IE because of the anti microsoft sentiment?
Why Why Why???
I'm done. I'm hoping for some answers now.
Sorry about the rant. I have to use IE because it is what my non technical wife is used to and the always there bookmarks on the left are important. We also have land line becasue she won't give it up.
Ummm. Don't think your in the right place dude. You'd be better off searchin ms support or at least using a windows forum. This is Android!
But to try to help, sounds like a browser hijacker, or malware. You need to run scans with malwarebytes, spybot, hijack this, anti-virus....you get the idea.
Sorry I can't help you more than that. Good luck

If you haven't already, download and run malwarebytes. Its one of the best and can find tons of stuff that regular AV can't.
As for bookmarks, if it comes to it there are utilities you can use to back them up. Then uninstall/reinstall IE.
You can also import bookmarks from/to chrome.

While looking for another solution (to another problem) I found your post. The same thing happened to me today on this site.
The problem is not your PC, nor your browser and is not a malware issue either. In fact, it's from a script that is specifically designed to disable the browsers' back button. You see, the back button does not generate any revenue towards pay-per-click and/or similar schemes. Click-throughs, however, will...
Chances are that one of the page ads loaded the script (usually java) and set a cookie as well (to prevent one from replicating the problem).
Closing the browser window is about the only way to get around it. Holding the pull-down for the back-button only shows numerous versions of the same page.
Other browsers have plugins that can prevent the script from running in the first place and/or block the ads entirely.
If it keeps happening then you should contact one of the Forum Mods.
Hope this helps.

Can't delete or move unless we happen upon it (like I just did) or you report it. Not like we have filters that send us PMs whenever someone types Delete or Move. Doesn't work that way, fellas. Sorry

At OP, if you are still having problems with the site, got to the main XDA page and flag an admin to check out your issues. Plus you could search there and if no results pop up or no one else is having the issue, there error could be between the chair and keyboard. If you want this to remain open, it is your choice but you will have better luck in the main XDA section, rather than the SGS3 section.
Shoot me a PM if you want it closed. If no PM by morning my time, then it is gone.

Does anyone know how to remove the preset Verizon bookmarks from the Samsung browser

There are 3 bookmarks baked into the Samsung browser that can not be removed. I can live with the one for Google, but the one for Mobile Web and Accessories are annoying the hell out of me, especially the mobile web one as it doesn't even take you to a functioning web site.
Used to be that disabling the partner bookmarks entry in the apps section took care of them, but that is no longer the case. To make it even worse, you can't even reorder them, so they are always at the top of your bookmarks.
Anyone come across a way to get rid of them?

He actually wasn't telling you which browser you HAD to use, he simply stated his opinion which he's allowed to do! If no one gave their opinions about apps we would never know which apps are better than another.. Calling someone names like you did (kid) and telling them to keep their mouth shut is lowering yourself and making you look bad! But just so you know @HipKat is one of the smarter people on here.. There's a reason his names a different color.. Lighten up some .
Also, if you want the bookmarks gone first try long pressing on them to see if they'll pop up a delete function and if it doesn't then there's only 2 options left and 1 of those you can't do because there's no root access on bootloader version 5 and the second thing you could do is get an app called package disabler pro it costs money but it's worth it to get all the bloatware out of the way or you can look into BK disabler too..
Edit: You can also download the older version of the Samsung internet app in .apk format and uninstall the current version and then install the older version.

Kid?? I'm 55 yrs old, for one thing, and I didn't get that Recognized Contributor for the hell of it. I worked on more Dev teams before the Bootloader lockdowns started and wrote my fair share of user guides on this and other forums years before you ever heard of XDA
edit: It was easier to just put the know it all on ignore.
