[Q] root without usb? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

My wife's Tmobile Samsung galaxy s2 got wet and now it's only recognized as "unknown device" by PC via USB connection. The sim card is not detected either but everything else work fine. The battery still charges ok with usb cable and PC can access the phone with kies. Now I’m trying to find out if it’s possible to root this phone without usb connection.
I've searched the forum and seen many people asked the same question before. Pretty much all answers were that it's impossible to root without pc/usb. Sorry I’m asking this again but I see some more recent posts (first 2 links below) in the I9100 Galaxy S2 forum suggesting it's doable by following the guide at the 3rd link below.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1561027
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
so my questions are:
do I understand this correctly and it's indeed possible to root tmobile gaglaxy S2 in a similar way to what described in the I9100 forum? If yes do I have to get the ICS first? I suppose I can get it via PC+Kies since the sim card is not working. the CWM.zip file (cwm stock recovery) used in the guide above seems for AT&T galaxy s2 only. is there a .zip file for tmobile version too? I found a .img file but don't know if it will work and how to put it into the external SD card.
many thanks

I dunno about you but if my wifes phone got wet.. I'd be getting it fixed asap before I got my head chewed off instead of worrying about rooting it..
As far as an initial recovery flash with cwm goes, I was under the impression the only way to do it was with ODIN while in download mode and rooting it through the flashable zip from CWM.. Maybe someone can offer some better suggestions though..

Newer, Safer Method to Root your phone?

I am new to xdadevelopers and this is my first thread.
I was just wondering if anyone has tried the new method of rooting our device?
Apparently, you can download GalaxyS2RootNew.zip. Unzip the file and install runme.bat.
This is supposed to work on all variants of the Galaxy S 2. You will get ROOT access but this method does not install a new kernel with recovery so you can't install custom ROM's.
Please advise if anyone has heard of this method, has tried it, does it work?
Found it on GalaxyS2Root.com website. Thanks.

I have followed the stickies and have watched videos on how to root the device using ODIN. That method works very well, but you need to back everything up first which requires a Micro SD card. I don't have a Micro SD card at the moment so can't use that method.
I was just wondering if anyone has tried the alternative method on the T989 model. It seems a lot more user friendly, easier, safer and you have no chance of bricking your phone. Thanks for your reply.
You don't need to backup anything but it is recommended in case you screw something up. Probably not going to happen if you don't flash a new rom, and stick to smaller changes like theme, or maybe a new kernel.
I've done odin method and seems pretty foolproof to me. I don't see how it can get less of a change to brick unless some other physical hardware problem intervenes in the process in mid-flash.

My mistake, the stickies did refer me to the same method I was mentioning in this post. Found what I was looking for in the below thread. Thanks again, sorry I'm still new and getting the hang of the site

Tried it last night on my new T-Mo GS2 (followed the galaxys2root.com instructions), it did not work for me. Plus side is that nothing bad happened to my phone even thought it didn't root successfully.
I have the U.S. based T-mo phone... so not sure if that's different than the phones used in Canada.

I think the Tmobile (T989) and Telus (T989D) version of the phone are the same. Unless you are running version 2.3.6, then the zergrush exploit doesn't work.
Backups are overrated (lol). I never do them and completely ignored it and went ahead and ODIN flashed the recovery and then flashed Juggernaut immediately.
Took me literally 2 minutes to do.

Right - my phone did come with 2.3.6. I ended up using another method to root - which was relatively easy also.

Easy safe root for note 2

Looking for a good and safe or at least as safe as you can get root method. I'm running the latest android 4.1.2 and I've been reading some of the root methods mess with your camera, bluetooth and the call quality and I really don't want to mess those up my main reason for wanting to root is to get rid of samsung & at&t's bloatware any info or help is greatly appreciated.
there are endless posts and threads about this subject; you really need to search for your answers before asking a simplistic question like this..
Thanks for your help I appreciate it

I used the Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit that can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052779
And the video that can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6BweCW5ck8
Worked like a charm for me.

Not just this....but READ!!
The best thing to do is to research ALL or at least a few different root methods.
Hell check out how it's done on other phones just to see how basically the same method is applied to different phones.
The toolbox is great but if you dont understand whats actaully going on
(When you figure it out youll be like wth?? Thats all it doing?)
Read, read and re-read
Should be the mantra of xda.
Im not just talkin instructions on how to "one click" either...
"But why freakboy13?"
Because when you run into issues you'll have a better understanding of whats going on, and maybe...just maybe...
Fix it on your own!!
Good luck and post back!!

Did ya read through the thread first?
(especially about the part of removing kies before using? )
Which card got encypted?
You have more than one.

No I didn't I have a bad habit of jumping into things head first I only have 1 card it a 64GB SanDisk so should I try rerooting it with Kies removed
Well on the toolkit thread it does say to remove kies before using.
So you are stock rooted correct?
And your only issue is an encrypted ext sd card
( by ninjas im guessing? ).
Are you sure its encrypted or is it corrupted?
Is your pc telling you this via password request or other dialog?
I know ive read the gs3 have issues with some 64gb cards but not gn2.
Idk
Did you format the card on the phone before you used it?
Edit: you have taken the card out and tried to read it via other means like dif phone, pc, card reader, etc. , right?

Yes I was stock rooted but I unrooted this morning. I'm not totally sure if my card is corrupted or just encrypted my phone does read the card and I can retrieve stuff off of it I haven't taken the card out of my phone and put it in the card reader itself but I hooked my phone to my pc and it reads the card that way I have seen on another thread were a person's card was encrypted and they were able to decrypt it but for some reason I'm not able to do that I'll check out that S3 thread and see if I can figure something out I really appreciate you offering me help my last phone I rooted was an HTC inspire so I'm not totally stupid just a little bit ha ha
my galaxy note 2 is rooted... is it safe to upgrade firmware via kies.. kies detected that i have a 4.1.1 firmware and i should upgrade it to 4.1.2 firmware.. should i click update?
You will lose root if the update is taken. ..
Root and updates don't play well together. ..

If you are on a stock rom and root is all you have and if you have a STOCK recovery you are fine.
As poster above said you will loose root.
Make sure you have a stock recovery.
How do i know if I have stock recovery?
Well .... if you didnt install cwm or twrp then you should be gtg.
Easy to check though.
Just boot into recovery!
Just make sure kies properly recognizes your phone and you should be golden.
Let us know how it goes!

[Q] Is my i927 partly-unlocked? (wanna update to ICS, hence asking)

Well, first things first...
I am a noob, and this is the first time I am using an android phone (moving from the Nokia N97 and Nokia C6). So please be patient (and tolerant).
The dealer I got this phone from wasnt sure if it was soft-unlocked (the ones which get locked if you update OS) or otherwise, and he most certainly didnt have (or give me) the unlock code.
The phone has been a delight for the past 3 months, and I love the the stunned look on the faces of everyone around, when I slide open the keyboard!! However, after doing a google search I discovered that there's an ICS update for the i927. And that has resulted in me googling to find out the likelyhood that my phone will re-lock to ATT.
To my surprise (or inability), I couldnt find a definite answer/guide as to what users of unlocked i927s, who do not have the unlock code, should do exactly, to "safely" update to ICS.
I have downloaded most of the tools (Odin 3.07, EFS 2.0.7 and the "I927UCLJ3_I927ATTLJ3_ATT" stock from samfirmware). And I had KIES and the drivers installed from day 1.
But the problem is that I dont have a road-map. Or a troubleshooting guide, in case I encounter unanticipated errors/crashes.
The other thing is uncertainty about the phone getting "re-locked". Some mobile repair guys say I should flash the update with my eyes closed (it wont re-lock to ATT, they say). However, the other side disuades me, and I have yet to find an across-the-counter shop which will give me an unlock code.
Of course, I think I can live without the update if I have to. But, I was hoping for a bit of help (or a step-by-step or link-by-link guide).
The other thing I want to know is whether flashing the ATT ICS update can also corrupt my IMEI details (and hence the need to back up with EFS)??
Finally, I would like mention that my phone is an un-rooted i927 (ATT) running Android 2.3.6.
Any help would be really be appreciated.
Not sure what to make of this..
The lack of replies has made me (even more) doubtful if a noob like me would be able to update my i927. I hope someone can tell me if my i927 is "updateable" or is the ICS update preferably for only the "authentic" i927 handsets??

If you have a SIM card from something not using the AT&T network, put it in. That will tell you if your phone is SIM unlocked or not (I think that's what you're asking).
In theory, applying the ICS update may re-lock your phone; it depends on how it was SIM unlocked in the first place.
My recommendation is:
1) Update to ICS (it's worlds better than GB)
2) If the phone re-locks to AT&T, then just buy and unlock code for a few dollars

I am already using a local SIM card on the phone (Airtel) since the day I bought the phone. All the features are working on the phone, except the WiFi tethering, which is also the biggest reason for my doubts (and reluctance) about flashing the ICS update. The WiFi tethering feature does not recognise my Airtel data connection (2G), making me to believe some features are still AT&T specific (like the ringtones feature).
The other thing is, re-locking is a significant concern, but its not the biggest concern (for me). Since I first visited the "Captivate Glide" section on this forum, I have read about problems like the IMEI number (or other important phone data) corrupting, bricking my phone (which I know no one in the world can guarantee against), or the phone getting stuck in the start up mode (read it somewhere here, although I dont know if it was an OS update related failure).
Anyways, I hope that clears up the current status of my i927, and thanks for replying.
A bit more help please...
I know I asking basic noob questions about updating, but I was hoping for a bit more guidance actually...
Like what do I do with the I927UCLJ3_I927ATTLJ3_ATT.zip file?? Do I unzip it, or just copy it the phone memory and reboot into Odin??
The other thing is I started the EFS app on my PC and connected my phone to it, but the IMEI and other numbers are just all 0s. So, I am thinking, I did something wrong there as well...
I am well aware that no one in the world can guarantee against bricking a phone. I just want to have a proper guide on how to update, so that I have the best odds possible

1. It seems you're trying to upgrade your Glide via Odin. Unzip the zip, get all the files, put them in Odin folder (NOT the SD card, Odin is a PC-based tool) in the forums to proceed.
EDIT: Google is man's best friend. This is the Odin guide I followed when just a week ago I'm still new to my Glide: http://androidromupdate.com/2012/11/10/i927uclj3-new-ics-4-0-4-for-samsung-sgh-i927-captivate-glide/
2. Your EFS may already be dead Or I don't know, never used that tool before.
Sent from Samsung Captivate Glide @ I927UCLJ3
Okay I'll still advice you use the efs tool to. Back up your efs foder, then put your phone in download mode, using Odin flash the stock ICS ROM when its through flash any of the recovery through Odin again then allow the phone to reboot. you can now flash any of the ROMs I prefer the lite ROM anyways.
Good luck.

Hard Bricked i747M

*I bought this off a friend of mine.*
All he told me was that he tried installing a rom and he thinks that he installed a rom for a different model S3.
What Happens/What I Did?
1. I tried to plug it into the computer and the computer doesn't show that anything plugged in, the S3 doesn't turn on. NOTHING.
2. I connected the phone to the PC without the battery inside and the phone responds with one RED light at the top left of the phone. Nothing shows up on my computer still, not even that the phone was connected NOTHING.
3. I bought a JIG device and tried plugging it into my phone and it doesn't work. (I previously tested this JIG on another samsung device and it worked)
4. I tried doing the method to use a 16gb SD card and downloading an i747m debrick IMG and using Win32FlashTool to copy it to my SD Card. I tried with 2 different cards the first one was a 16gb SD card and the other was a 32gb SD card.
5. Through a lot of research I found a leaked way to unbrick the Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 by shorting out the R313 chip, I'm sure you guys are all aware of this method. I opened my device and couldn't find the R313 chip. After further research I found that a user was able to locate the R313 chip on the i747m and he'd unbricked his phone with that method. If anyone can help me locate the i747m R313 chip it'd be GREATLY appreciated!
If anyone can help me out it would be great! I'm very experienced at soldering so if there's a method that requires me to solder I'm more than confident I can do it.
Thank you!! :good:
Would love to know where you found R313 on the i747m circuit board. Think that's going to be the last choice for me.
Thank you.
Where did you find info confirming someone did that on the I747M? The I9300 is a very different device with very different hardware. Im not saying it wouldn't be possible....but I would be surprised to hear that. Can you link us to where you found that?

[Q] clarification on debricking my p5220

Hi all,
just bricked the tab 3 10.1 p5220 by wiping all the memory from within the bootloader.
Oh well, live and learn.
Now the methods for debricking mentioned are via Kies, which doesn't work as it no
longer recognises the model of the tablet, or via Odin. Easy so far except for the
ridiculously slow DL time from the host sites with the firmware.
I was wondering why can't I just copy the rom onto the sd card and install it from there
using CWM? Sencond there appear to be several copies of the roms flying around.
They seem to be titled ...XUA4, ...XUA2 and ...XUA8. Are they just version numbers and
obviously XUA8 being the latest and greatest?
Many thanks,
Andrew
hey hey
benny,
you're right, trying to find the firmware for this thing is crazy.
nothing on samsung.com only thing i can say is the firmwares go by country/provider
i think british/us are the same.
