help restoring nandroid backup..phone out of order(resolved) - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

hello. so i did a nandroid backup of my rooted el29 gingerbread + cwm epic 4g phone a week ago. it created a folder on my external sd card (sdcard/external sd/sdc2012-06-2012 folder) ive also continously made titanium backups of the apps + sys data. so i let a friend uninstall a system app(id bloatware) just to prove it could be uninstalled but dont like that i get error messages now sometimes when accessing email, etc. i tried a titanium backup but it hangs for 5min. now im trying a nandroid restore in cwm v5.0.2.7. where is a good guide for this? i went to restore but it keeps saying "error opening directory. No files found." i dunno what directory its searching but clearly not the correct one as i verified almost 700MB of data on external sd card. ive wiped data, cache so it only boots to "samsung logo screen." i also have a backup nandroid on my server so how to i get it to actually restore?
06-12-2012 update: crisis averted. i remember doing advanced backup w/ cwm recovery originally so i just did regular backup. it created a directory cwm/backup/new folder. i put the files from original advanced backup over to correct location and restore did it!! this is just like the acronis images i do for my pc's. what a wonderful thing!!

[Q] can't restore a nandroid backup...need help

hey guys.
i've gone through a lot of searching and still no solution. PLEASE READ THIS SO YOU DONT RECOMMEND SOMETHING I ALREADY TRIED!
i tried to restore a nand backup from yesterday and i'm getting "run nandroid-mobile.sh restore from adb!"
battery is fully charged. sd card is there and all the files are there. i already fixed the md5sum and still get the same issue.
it seems it's not a problem with the backup itself because i can't backup or restore, or even use the ms-usb toggle. for every command i get the error to do it in adb?
i only had that one backup and i really dont want to start from scratch! nothing has happened to have corrupted the backup, so i'm strongly holding to the view that its not corrupted, something else happened.
everything was working fine. i tried changing a file in framework-res.apk, that put me into a bootloop. so i wiped data/cache/dalvik like always and went to restore and bam...error...
any ideas guys? need to fix this ASAP.
EDIT: i just reflashed amonra recovery to make sure it wasnt messed. was able to make a backup (of what i dont know, phone is wiped) and restore it....ms-usb toggle worked now....but still get the .sh error when trying to restore my backup. damn!
EDIT 2: got it working. after reflashing amonra i was able to do a backup (of the empty phone)...i had changed the name of the folder for my backup (no spaces though) and it looks like this was throwing amonra off. i renamed the folder to match the structure of the backup i had just made and was able to restore!
thanks me!

[Q] Help Needed with Titanium Backup and Gingerbread

So I am having a weird issue with Angry Birds, Titanium Backup, and Gingerbread. Here is the deal: I backed up AB using TB while running one of the CM7RC0 builds. Then, when I switched back to CM6.1.1 and went to restore AB, the app would not run upon restoration and kept force closing. I figured the backup might have been corrupted. However, I restored my CM7 backup and was able to restore the AB backup. So, I created another backup of AB hoping that this iteration would restore across ROMs as it always has before. Unfortunately, no dice, and I can't get AB to restore onto any ROM other than the one from which it was backed up. Does anyone have a clue about what the issue may be or how I can go about fixing it?
In addition, I have tried backing up AB using other programs such as My Backup Root and it still will no work. This issue is not happening with any of my other backups.
Bumpity bump bump
I have had similar problems when trying to restore from TB upon flashing of a new ROM (whether it be a GB ROM, Sense ROM, whatever).
Before you try my solution, ensure that you have everything backed via TB or MyBackupPro (MBP) (I am so paranoid I have both paid versions installed).
I was only able to get apps restored by deleting android_secure folder on SD card, restoring/installing ROM, and then running TB or MPP to get apps back.
Oh yeah, standard instructions of full data wipe, cache wipe, dalvik cache wipe apply.
I'm sure there is an easier way to do this, but after an extensive search of XDA I've yet to find it.
And you can't view/edit contents of android_secure file from phone. It has to be done via ADB or simply while phone's SD card is mounted as disk drive when plugged in to your PC.
I forgot to mention: I only deleted the content of android_secure, not the folder itself, i.e., the folder remained on the root of my SD card.
Thanks for the advice. I will give this a shot when i get a chance this afternoon and I'll let you know if it works.
Tapa tapa tapa
Hey, no such luck but thats for the advice. I did clear the android_secure folder and the only thing in there, not surprisingly was an ASEC file corresponding to angry birds. I'm out of thanks for the day but I'll be sure to hit you with a few tomorrow.

[Q] Corrupted data.img I think

Well hey guys,
Basically the story goes like this. I nandroided before installing cm7 and before that I made a Titanium backup to dropbox and sd, i was in a rush so deleted the sd backup. Installed CM7 and restored apps only to find out I was missing like 200 or so, and they weren't in titanium, I tried restoring my nandroid but it seems boot.img is corrupted and in unyaffs it says bad file descriptor. It starts to extract some folder, but not the crucial app folder! And due to this weird error it always crashes CWM and so I cannot restore. I've tried all that I can find on the internet, unyaffs, ext2explore but I don't have linux. Do you guys reckon you could give me a few pointers? I've managed to recover a list of what was installed because they're in the data folder, but that takes time :/
Thanks!

I/O error write to sd card (mybackup pro)

trying to restore apps and i get this message! ? fix?
the restore of data was fine but apps wont!
I'm getting this too when trying to restore my data after flashing a new rom. Let me know if you hear of any solutions.
The mybackup website says its an SD card error.. that may be the case, but it was working fine an hour ago on the old rom I had (because I'm new I can't post the link, but a quick google to their FAQ and you'll see what I mean)
I think my issue was due to the SD card. I reformatted it and then copied the contents back again from my laptop. I've now re-installed the new ROM and am using mybackup root to restore my contents as I type this - all seems fine so far
Thanks for the feedback.
What did you format normal or ext or both
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I had the same error. I don't find how to fix it but how to recover my data app.
Save the backup on your PC
Execute all .apk in my save folder from your phone
Launch mybackup to do another apps save with data
Copy all file wich are not .apk in the old backup (on your pc) and past them in the new backup folder on your phone (replace all existing file)
And finaly restor the backup, it will restore the data with the app
It's not "user friendly" but it worked for me, it was not a SD card issue
I was having this same issue. Watching alogcat revealed that an apk that MBP was expecting was not there, causing an IO error.
I tried to restore again, this time unselecting that specific app and it appears to be working.
So to fix it, install alogcat and watch for errors as the restore is taking place. This should clue you in on the problem.

This was exactly my problem. Seems like the ****ing program didn't actually back up a damned thing. The folder which was supposed to have the backed-up APKs was completely empty.
I had to restore from an older backup and it worked.
I guess that's just what happens when you rely on free apps.
Just got the same STUPID problem - I'll try the fix above.
The only reason I chose MyBackup Root was because you can do "0-click batch restore" for free which you can't with the free version of Titanium Backup.
EDIT: Backups won't restore. It says "I/O Error". I've had the SD card for a few weeks and it was working perfectly with Titanium Backup. Also, everything's been properly installed formatted and fixing permissions and clearing caches makes no difference.
EDIT 2: After running aLogcat, it says that Mybackup has the following error: "...apps/appnamehere: open failed: EM0ENT (No such file or directory). It's like this for most of my of apps (and I have hundreds) that are now lost with all their data!
Also, none of the apps that do restore so far link to the market (it says this after restore).
This app really needs updating to resolve these serious issues.

When backing up apps and data again it STILL won't backup some apps!! Any suggestions?

root, flash, backup file moving help

Hey quick question,
so I make a backup of my system for flashing. Then I move the backup onto a folder to my computer same with my titanium backup folder. So when I wipe and flash a new rom, I have all of my files for my system backup and my titanium backup on my phone. After I restore all of my apps after flashing the new rom, can I move the backup files and leave them on the computer as well as the system backup to save space? Is there anyway that I can still restore the system if it gets stuck in a bootloop - (besides flashing a new stock one)?
basically I want to store the system backup and the titanium backup on my computer so they are safe and because they take up about 4 gb of space on my phone.
I tried to be clear but let me know if I should further explain
Thanks
I wouldn't backup system apps with titanium, because they can vary from rom to rom. As long as you properly wipe your phone before flashing, you shouldn't get bootloops(can still happen). If you get a bootloop, try pulling the battery 1st. If your phone still bootloops, you have to use download mode and ODIN to flash stock ROM.

right which I have done before. I just want to know that if my phone does get stuck somewhere (has happened before, and I had to flash a stock rom and lost everything - lost backup) Would I be able to move my system restore and titanium backup files from my computer to my phone to be able to recover?
Basically store backups on computer, then if something happens, be able to transfer them back to phone
Thanks for the help
Generally it's good to leave backups someplace where they won't get easily corrupted or lost. Since the S3 has a microsd slot, sure, keep them on your computer and move them over if necessary.
My SOP is to keep the current backup on the microsd, and store the backups on my computer. Then if I need to reflash/nandroid back, they're there, and if my microsd is corrupted I have a known good backup.

As long as you can get into your custom recovery after anything happens, backups will work. Make sure to backup system, data, and boot. If not and you have to flash using ODIN, like starting from scratch, you may have issues such as md5 mismatches.

ok I was just looking to see if it was possible or not to transfer backups from computer to phone if the phone cant turn on ie. stuck in download mode or recovery mode.
