When I had flashed a radio pre-4.0.4, say a 4.0.3 radio, I saw in the hidden "info" menu that "GSM/CDMA auto (PRL" was selected, but in every 4.0.4 radio I've tried it now says "WCDMA preferred".
Can this affect my reception negatively? Is that why many seem to have issues with some 4.0.4 radios? I cannot seem to change this into "GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)" since it doesn't stick.

From what I have read on other radio threads WCDMA is the one you need to have selected otherwise your gnex will just connect to whatever's available rather than selecting the best cell tower or connection first out of available connections for instance it will connect to HSDPA first before normal 3G if its available on WCDMA setting , I'm using GSM gnex.

Doesn't matter that setting works for both types of galaxy nexus, my gsm galaxy nexus had WCDMA preferred already selected by default when I first checked it originally even though it's a gsm phone.

Names can be deceiving, WCDMA is not CDMA, but UMTS.

Maybe. The difference between "WCDMA preferred" and "GSM auto" is that the former will prefer a 3G signal if available over a 2G signal, versus the later, which will prefer a 2G signal over a 3G signal.
Generally WCDMA preferred should be selected, unless you are living in an area where 3G is spotting. In that case, set it to GSM auto, which will prefer a stronger 2G signal over a weaker 3G signal.
Could it be because you flashed a cdma radio instead of a gsm radio ?

I'd actually prefer a strong 2G signal over a very weak 3G signal. At least in the area in which I live.

Yeah, and changing the "radio info" doesn't stick upon reboot or even stick upon leaving that menu.
How come that pre-4.0.4 radios had "GSM/CDMA autp (PRL)" while the 4.0.4 ones have "WCDMA preferred?" Did it prove to give better reception or what was the idea of changing that?

I would presume it's because most people would prefer using 3G on 1 bar, rather than 2G on 4 bars, given that the data throughput would be significantly higher with 1 bar on 3G vs full bars on 2G...

that depends..in my office i get 1 bar H (H+ to be more exaclty) and i can't browse at all..internet connection stuck..so i have to use 2g only (4 bars edge) in order to navigate..probably use the GSM auto prl would be the best option for me (so i dont have to toggle 2gonly on and off when 3g is ****), if only i could set it
I can't seem to be able to change network settings from WCDMA preferred to GSM auto.... it always get stuck in WCDMA preferred (XXLA1 radio and ril)

On the Desire (at least mine), the options I see are GSM only, WCDMA only, and GSM/WCDMA auto.
Am I correct in inferring that GSM only is 2G?

Correct. Whenever I set mine to GSM only I can only get a 2G signal, even though I live in a strong 3G area. As soon as I switch to GSM/WCDMA or WCDMA only the signal switches to 3G.
well i was reading this guide and came across tip #22.
well that guide was made for the evo which is a cdma phone but when i checked my preferred network settings it was on wcdma preferred. since my G2 is a gsm phone,i changed it to "gsm auto (prl)".
was this the correct choice or should i have it set to wcdma?

Depends on what you are trying to achieve. GSM Auto (Prl) will switch between 2G and 3G based off what the tower is telling it to be on and the strength of the signal. From my experience this is the best setting for use and don't worry. Personally, I usually put my phone on 2G only, and only switch to 3G when I am going to be using the data.
WCDMA Preffered and WCDMA Only is telling the phone to hold 3G as long as possible, and if there is any 3G coverage to switch to it, or in the case of Only it will never switch off 3G, even when there is no 3G coverage available.
If you are trying to save battery GSM auto or GSM Only are your best bets, if trying to preserve a weak 3G signal for data WCDMA only, and if you are somewhere that gets decent 3G but the phone loves to switch to 2G for some odd reason, WCDMA Preferred.
Entering in the "secret" menu *#*#4636#*#*, i noticed that the default network mode is GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
Aren't two completely different networks (and phone)? Or what that CDMA setting is referring?
Since my GNext is GSM and in my country there is no CDMA network operators, is that the best option regarding the battery life?
I remember that in my previous htc desire, the default network mode was WCDMA preferred (WCDMA different from CDMA), even if i was using GSM auto (PRL) which mean that if the 3g is low it will use the 2g network...and i remember there was nothing about CDMA network
So my doubt is why the Galaxy Nexus GSM doesn't have GSM auto (PRL) or WCDMA preferred as default option? is that a bug?
here a reference about the network mode http://www.google.ie/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=6a327a95211ac789&hl=en
GSM = GPRS (2g), EDGE(2g), UMTS(3g), WCDMA(3g), HSDPA(3g) {Cell Carrier examples: AT&T and T-Mobile}
CDMA = CDMA*(2/3g) EV-DO(3g) WiMax(3/4g) {Cell Carrier examples: Verizon and Sprint}
Now that the general stuff is out of the way, here's my take on the Preferred Network types:
WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best.

Id like to know why the options dont stick as well... Just seems stupid to me that they dont stay after you choose them.
I have also been wondering the same thing. On the Nexus One and Nexus S it would default to WCDMA prefered and if I were to force 3G on it then it would stick on a reboot. On the GN if I put it to WCDMA only or GSM only it will revert to the GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) network type. It did this on stock 4.0.2 and it's also doing it on CM9.
In that menu there is something about LTE ram dump too. Is there a little more ram the LTE guys are getting that's hidden on GSM?

GSM auto (PRL) won't stick but WCDMA did for me but I REALLY regret changing it. It caused my SMSC number to change to 00 and I couldn't change it back on my GNex. It took me a while to figure out that the SMSC had changed and it stopped me from sending text messages but I could still receive them. After wiping and flashing a few times I realised and I put the sim card into an old phone and changed the SMSC back and put it back in my GNex and it let me send texts again.

God it was a nightmare yesterday. I did a google search and found the number on vodafone forums for my country. What's your carrier? Even if you have the number maybe you won't be able to put it on your nexus like me but you can try. Another possible solution might be to get a new sim card but I'm not sure if that'll work. I just read it online.

SMSC update
for refenrece about the above problem updating the SMSC i found this link
http://community.windmobile.ca/windmobile/topics/nexus_s_smsc_advanced_menu_options
its for the nexus s, but it works also on our galaxy nexus
so basically with our nexus (also other samsung i guess) through the advanced menu *#*#4636#*#*, u can update the SMSC only putting the encoded value like described in the link above
also the important things are the 2 buttons near the SMSC field:
- the first on the left (nearest the field) mean refresh: basically should load ur actual SMSC (sometimes don't work)
- the second on the right (far from the filed) mean update: so it change ur SMCS with the actual value on the field..so be carefully if the field is empty
(in my language the translation of those button are wrong, and both have the same label..thats why im explaining it )
anyway i suggest to don't play with the *#*#4636#*#* menu at all, unless u have problems
hope this helps some future users
I need help. Im in the US on AT&T. Im having the same problem sending sms. I can receive them but just cant send them. I think i messed up my smsc. Messing around with*#*#4636#*#*.I dont know what to do. Im running stock rom. Can somebody help me and tell what number need to put in. Im kinda lost. Gsm galaxy nexus in the use on ATT
Geng ....
Anyone noted that? In the secret menu (you can access dialing *#*#4636#*#*, in the first section) with the 4.0.4 'WCDMA Preferrer' is selected, and you can´t change that because it returns to the default value. In the 4.0.2, the default was GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL).
I think that is important because if affects the battery life in standby. In the Nexus One, the battery last much longer in GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL) mode than WCDMA Preferred.
What do you think guys?
I did notice the change, but you are wrong saying it affects battery life. Theres a reason you cant change it, let it be.

The sooner he realizes that turning off wcdma means no 3g, the quicker we can chuckle about it.
And yeah, 2g is better on battery.
Edit: That was a bit mean, but really, Google this a bit.
Hmm, interesting I remember on the first htc desire and the htc hero, it was recommended to use gsm auto prl, as it saved battery, and their was an interesting thread about how it worked, and I use to use an app "network ", by Phillip, and it helped to chose the gsm auto prl, but when I tried to use the same app, on my galaxy s2, it wouldn't work anymore, as the gsm auto prl setting wouldn't stick, so I suppose the phones nowadays use a completely new framework. I just set mine to auto select Gsm /wcdma if am in a place of good coverage and when coverage isn't good, I just set it to gsm. My two cents.
I am agree, but there is something strange. People who have received the official ota with all stock, told me that they have the GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL) activated, like in 4.0.2. But, like me, people who have updated whit the full system image have WCDMA Preferred and cannot change..

Since I buyed the phone, that means with 4.0.2 and 4.0.1, I have had GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL), it is asi the phone comes becuase I kept it all stock. But, fur installing the 4.0.4 I have flashed the full image, and it is then the change has come. It is very strange, because people who have received the OTA officially, keeps the GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL) selected..
If you want some powersaving from switching data/bands , get a custom rom like AOKP 29, then you can set a powersave function to switch to 2g or turn data completely off, automatically when going to stand-by. Or get an app like juicedefender, it does the same.

Hi guys I had to make a thread because I really don't know what's happening.
From stock I updated to the leaked ICS that came out in the spring. This is where I noticed I could not get lte.
I updated to cyanogen 9 and currently on 10.
I noticed that when I try changing networks from wcdma preferred to auto lte gsm it doesn't stick. It goes back to wcdma preferred even in *#*#4636#*#*... ohhh when I first flashed to the leaked ICS I had it set to wcdma preferred.
Why after I flash anything while on wcdma preferred It is unable to change or stick to any network? BTW even if I change it without exiting the screen I still can't get lte. Yes I'm in lte coverage and have the plan.
Please help thanks

Happened to me aswell, the only fix i could find is to go through the unbricking process to restore LTE connectivity, after that i changed my settings in *#*#4636#*#* and i lost LTE again. Only way i know of is to just do the unbricking process and flash whatever ROM you use, and avoid from changing the network settings via *#*#4636#*#*. Besides in cyanogen mod there is an option in the settings app to change networks and use 2g only. Changing network settings in settings app wont cause you to loose LTE once you change it back to the WCDMA/gsm mode in settings app again

I would try doing flashing a new basband/firmware and then doing a factory reset, if that doesnt help, then I would do the unbrick proccess. (takes about an hour)
