So all day today ive been trying to get my network settings to stick to WCDMA Only after using *#*#4636#*#* and everytime i go back it automatically goes to GSM (Auto) So now that we have root is there any app that can help with this or something we can do? To keep it at WCDMA!

why do you want it to stay on wcdma...I wouldn't think this phone HAS cdma...
GSM auto bull**** im getting speeds of .5 - 1 mbps in brooklyn NEW YORK lmfao on a speed test..
Entering in the "secret" menu *#*#4636#*#*, i noticed that the default network mode is GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
Aren't two completely different networks (and phone)? Or what that CDMA setting is referring?
Since my GNext is GSM and in my country there is no CDMA network operators, is that the best option regarding the battery life?
I remember that in my previous htc desire, the default network mode was WCDMA preferred (WCDMA different from CDMA), even if i was using GSM auto (PRL) which mean that if the 3g is low it will use the 2g network...and i remember there was nothing about CDMA network
So my doubt is why the Galaxy Nexus GSM doesn't have GSM auto (PRL) or WCDMA preferred as default option? is that a bug?
here a reference about the network mode http://www.google.ie/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=6a327a95211ac789&hl=en
GSM = GPRS (2g), EDGE(2g), UMTS(3g), WCDMA(3g), HSDPA(3g) {Cell Carrier examples: AT&T and T-Mobile}
CDMA = CDMA*(2/3g) EV-DO(3g) WiMax(3/4g) {Cell Carrier examples: Verizon and Sprint}
Now that the general stuff is out of the way, here's my take on the Preferred Network types:
WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best.

Id like to know why the options dont stick as well... Just seems stupid to me that they dont stay after you choose them.
I have also been wondering the same thing. On the Nexus One and Nexus S it would default to WCDMA prefered and if I were to force 3G on it then it would stick on a reboot. On the GN if I put it to WCDMA only or GSM only it will revert to the GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) network type. It did this on stock 4.0.2 and it's also doing it on CM9.
In that menu there is something about LTE ram dump too. Is there a little more ram the LTE guys are getting that's hidden on GSM?

GSM auto (PRL) won't stick but WCDMA did for me but I REALLY regret changing it. It caused my SMSC number to change to 00 and I couldn't change it back on my GNex. It took me a while to figure out that the SMSC had changed and it stopped me from sending text messages but I could still receive them. After wiping and flashing a few times I realised and I put the sim card into an old phone and changed the SMSC back and put it back in my GNex and it let me send texts again.

God it was a nightmare yesterday. I did a google search and found the number on vodafone forums for my country. What's your carrier? Even if you have the number maybe you won't be able to put it on your nexus like me but you can try. Another possible solution might be to get a new sim card but I'm not sure if that'll work. I just read it online.

Mine is greyed out too so maybe that doesn't change anything in this case. I guess your best bet is trying to put the sim card into another phone and set the SMSC number on that phone then plug it back into your GNex. I used an old blackberry

Glad to see it worked. I actually went back to stock and rooted again and flashed AOKP and all that just to fix this and then realised all that wasn't necessary lol. I wonder if everyone switching to WCDMA only is having this issue or just us?

SMSC update
for refenrece about the above problem updating the SMSC i found this link
http://community.windmobile.ca/windmobile/topics/nexus_s_smsc_advanced_menu_options
its for the nexus s, but it works also on our galaxy nexus
so basically with our nexus (also other samsung i guess) through the advanced menu *#*#4636#*#*, u can update the SMSC only putting the encoded value like described in the link above
also the important things are the 2 buttons near the SMSC field:
- the first on the left (nearest the field) mean refresh: basically should load ur actual SMSC (sometimes don't work)
- the second on the right (far from the filed) mean update: so it change ur SMCS with the actual value on the field..so be carefully if the field is empty
(in my language the translation of those button are wrong, and both have the same label..thats why im explaining it )
anyway i suggest to don't play with the *#*#4636#*#* menu at all, unless u have problems
hope this helps some future users

Hey All,
So, for some reason, I am unable to get LTE when i am flashed on the AOKP jellybean rom for the SGH-1747M (rogers)
I did everything that was stated in Task's Gerrit (Changed the connection for WCDMA to LTE/GSM auto), all that does is work for a while on H+, then disconnects.
I've changed my apn settings to the Rogers LTE settings, which just cuts off communication all together
Ive flashed Rogers Modems, still to no avail.
The thing that bothers me is that other sgh-1747M users claim to have been getting LTE on the AOKP jellybean rom.
My question is WHY AM I HAVING TROUBLE!!!??? I know the Rom was made for an At&T sgh1747, so people may say thats why its not working, but people with Canadian SG3's have been able to get LTE on the same ROM im having trouble getting it on.
If theres anything at all im missing, can someone please clarify exactly what im missing and what I should do to get it working.
I love the AOKP jellybean ROM, i keep going back to it, but the LTE not working just hurts my feelings (since I am paying for an LTE smartphone plan). PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!
PS: the first time I ever changed from WCDMA to LTE/GSM autom i got a 4G symbol for about 30 secs.....never seen it again! HELP!
i dont have a gerrit. so im unsure what you are talking about.
you need to add a canadian LTE apn and then do this...
Enter *#*#4636#*#* into the dialer
phone information
set preferred network type
change to LTE/GSM auto

I'm not really sure. Being as I don't have a Canadian model its not something I can test. But I'm sure some Canadian users will be posting here to help you out soon.
when i try to change the preferred network it will not let me change it to anything else but to lte/gsm (prl) (i have the AT&T version)

Thats interesting. Maybe its because you are actually using at&t network. It works when I put it on LTE/GSM, but all I get is 3G and H+
Check your IMEI in about phone/status. If its showing 0, there's a thread for that.
If you're getting 4G icon and your mobile network status says LTE and are getting LTE speeds, then its cosmetic issue. I had that problem before.
What I did was I flashed Kyan's ROM 1.3 cause its based off of Rogers firmware. Once I verified I had LTE icon on Kyan ROM, then flashed the stock/rooted ROM after.

Interesting. I will try that method and see what happens. Thanks for the info; will post back with results soon
Ok, so after going through the whole process stated above, i WAS able to get a 4G symbol come every now and then. But before the connection actually finalizes and goes through (before it turns blue on the aokp rom), it disconnects and goes back to WCDMA preferred. I added the rogers LTE apn, and using that apn with the LTE/GSM auto selected allowed the 4G to come, but it keeps disconnecting. It even sometimes changes back to other apns on the list by itself
Anyone know if theres a way to lock the preferred network and apn settings?
enter apn settings, then REBOOT phone. After that, enter *#*#4636#*#* into phone dialer and go change to LTE/CMDA/GSM. that worked for me, I just needed to reboot my phone for the apn settings to work

Mine works until I reboot. Then it changes back to WCDMA. I'm on Telus.
LTE on canadian i747M (Rogers)
I had similar issue with LTE after flashing to AOKP rom. The fix provided by AOKP (after every reboot, type in *#*#4636#*#* and flipping the network type from WCDMA to LTE_only, then flip to LTE/GSM auto(PRL) ) works. LTE will show up as 4G. I have the 2012-09-30 AOKP build installed.
Yesterday all of a sudden I could not get LTE anymore. Not sure what happened as the only thing I did was to activate a new account on Google. Anyway the 4G/ flipping did not work anymore. Reflashed the rom several times, still the same issue, my phone will not get LTE/4G.
This morning tried the following and voila it worked, thought I will share this:
Flip the network type to LTE Only, there is no connection, REBOOT the phone.
1. After reboot, flip the network type to LTE Only again, this time, the connection worked - what a surprise/thrill.
2. Flipped the network type to LTE/GSM auto (PRL), connection was ok and 4G came on and stayed on. Did several reboots and repeated 1 and 2 and LTE/4G was ok.
Hope this helps.
I don't recommend you to use task aokp rom! You won't get LTE real speed and Dev won't help you since you are not an at&t user! He couldn't care less about the rest so try liquid jelly bean which is a lot faster and better or milestone 4 and aristodemo! They have better support although they are tw rom but worthy anyways
Rogers I747M

Task compiles that ROM based on AOKP source, but AOKP officially doesn't support att. Although I didn't have problems getting lte on his ROM the fact that you have to set it every time you reboot is why I am using cm10 for now otherwise it's a good ROM!
I'm having the same issues on my rogers branded s3. No matter what I do I can get lte to even appear. My apn auto rolls back to the provided apn and if I delete that I have no data at all. Hopefully this does have an answer because the Rom is amazing

Alright I think I have it figured out. I added the rogers APN related all others and the only change I made was I removed the info under APN type where it said internet+MMS and left it blank. Saved the APN rebooted and I have lte now. I even rebooted my phone and each time it boots up its showing 4g without having to play with any settings

hi,
I have Samsung AT&T I747 with HyperDrive ROM. It always registered on GSM/LTE/CDMA preffred mode and I m unable to set it to GSM only mode. I even go to and set manually GSM only in mobile network setting but again it jumps to GSM/LTE/CDMA mode...
Please suggest me how to set it to GSM mode only.... I tried *#2263# also, but it also does not work.

You can not do this. GSM/LTE/CDMA is the correct mode it should be on
Might I ask why you want to do that ?

thanks for taking this up, actually I had 2G internet activated on my mobile plan. And when I set all the modes ON, it drains my battery fast and always jump my device from GSM to 3G and bounce back very frequently and my phone sometimes goes unreachable.
So previously when I was on stock ROM then it used to search only for 2G network and my battery also does not drain fast.

I haven't seen your ROM but, on AOKP you would go to Settings>More>Mobile networks>Network operators and search for available networks. When search is completed, click on AT&T (there may be more than one showing.) After this, your selection of GSM/WCDMA will "stick." Unfortunately, it has to be repeated after every reboot.
Hello all,
Today I upgraded to official cm13 (cm-13.0-20160420-NIGHTLY-Z00A), and then I found I'm unable to switch the network mode to LTE only in Testing (by dialing *#*#4636#*#*). It switched to LTE only for a little time, but after several seconds, it automatically switches back to WCDMA preferred.
I also wiped system, data, cache and did a fresh zip install, it still doesn't help.
This problem does not exist in cm12.
The LTE coverage here is not good, so forcing LTE mode is necessary.
So does anyone know how to keep my phone in LTE only mode with this cm13?
Thanks
Hi,
1. Try to input *#*#4636#*#* from the dialer app, select Phone information, change Set prefered network type to LTE only.
2. Create a custom profile on System Profiles, change Prefered network type to LTE (Recommended).
I'd recommend option one.

I did exactly the same thing. It only lasted several seconds and then automatically reverted back to WCDMA preferred.
I do have a LTE signal during the short duration. But I can't make it persistent.

It does.
I tried all network modes, and the results are all the same: automatically revert to WCDMA preferred after several seconds.
The interesting thing is: If I choose WCDMA only, it still will revert to WCDMA preferred. So I think this is an internal bug of the Android system and not related to the carrier.
