This is my simple guide for rooting your dinc from 2.3.4 with hboot 0.92
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26146567&postcount=15
for the adb in the beginning i would suggest referring to scotty85's original post on android forums because he has all of the commands bolded out.

I have another q if you don't mind my phone says that my phone # is 0000003868 for some reason and I can't use my Verizon data because it doesn't recognize the # do you know?

Sorry, I don't know anything about that. How long have you been experiencing that/are you able to make calls and send text messages?
Ya everything works fine its just that in the Nam settings it is 0000003868 and I can't change it. Its like locked or something...

I've had my Evo for about 3 weeks now and am now wanting to root now that I see cyanogenmod is coming to Evo. I've rooted my Nexus and G1 with no problems but it seems the Evo is more difficult, what is the easiest way to root my Evo? And would someone be willing to help me with rooting it via IM or something similar?
There are tons of threads in the android development forum to show you how. Not to mention there was a one click root at some point if I am not mistaken, although I have no idea if it still works.

Yea, I've seen all of them and they all seem tedious compared to Nexus rooting. Which is the best method to go about rooting? I want to use Amon RA recovery if that helps. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me too.
Can anyone help?
Simple Root is 3 clicks & you're rooted & nand unlocked. Running win7 x64 & worked great for me.
I was reading up on it, do I need to uninstall HTC sync and the HTC drivers to get it to work??
I believe for unrevoked you need to remove those items ( the last time i checked at v2 ).
Versus Simple Root... I believe those are all required to get it to work.
What Version is your phone it would be much easier to know

Its 1.47.651.1 I'm going to try the 1 simple root method, but just have one question, am I supposed to have it on charge only or disk drive?
Charge-only
Awe crap, I forgot to put flash recovery, was I supposed to do that first or can I do that after step 1 or something???
Ok, so I got to part 4 and it just says starting part 2, thats it, it doesn't do anything more. Did I do something wrong, or....? Please help.
So could someone please help me???????
What method are u using? Try unrevoked 3, its very simple
*This was posted from my Evo 4G*
I had to do this after the using simple root method.

Thanks for replying guys, but I got it to work finally late last night. Anyways, I can't get wireless tether to work. It keeps force closing. I know I have root and everything because I was able to make a nand backup and I flashed Damagecontrol.
im having an issue rooting my htc evo because i have an updated build number. i have looked around on alot of threads and see that unrevoked wont work for me. my build number is 3.70.651.1. does anyone know another method i can use?

alot of that is very confusing. i just wish unrevoke would come out with a new fix to support 3.70 =[. do you have any other ways?
Read those threads its not hard... Thats how I rooted this evo... I got it when it 1st came out. Manual was the only way. Even if could have used something like simple root I would have done it manualy.
As far as I know that is your option right now.

The only root for 3.70 right now is the manual one. No unrevoked no auto root. Come back in a few weeks if that's what you're looking for.

I agree.... plus, you get to learn 1 or 2 things (if you care).
I am in the same exact boat. I tried what I thought was the manual way but that didn't work. I then tried a couple of auto root options that of course didn't work. I wonder if I tried a different manual root method than you all are refering to? Can someone link me to the exact manual method please? I prefer the manual way myself, it just didn't seem to work for me. Is it possible that the latest ota update put a stop to the manual method as well? Can anyone confirm they have used said method on said version, successfully? Sorry for the long post, anxious to get a new rom put on this phone and unlock it's real potential. Thanks allot everyone!

the manual method by zikronix is always up to date for the latest ota updates. he does a really good job of incorporating other peoples ideas into it.

i have run through this many times so i can help you through if you like. i'm not smart enough to develop roms yet, so this is my way of giving back to the community...
I am not new to rooting but am new to rooting htc phones and the evo 4g. I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as to where I could find the most up to date information/instructions on rooting my new evo 4g. I have been searching forums and google for 2 days now and am being overwhelmed with information. My specs are as follows:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.11.9
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.17-gee557fd htc-kernel!and18-2#15 (stock)
Build Number: 3.70.651.1 CL294884 release-keys
Software Version: 3.70.651.1
Basically, everything is stock as of 7/2/11. If any other info is needed (don't think there is) please let me know. Thank you in advance for any and all help!
Read this thread.

Use unrevoked, and be sure you DON'T accept any update prompts. The newer version can't be rooted, but they software version you're on can.
For begginers u should try out this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
It super easy but i rooted with unrevoked.
and be sure DON'T UPDATE TO GINGERBREAD

The unrevoked site will not allow me to download the recovery. It keeps telling me "403 - forbidden." This was the method I wanted to use b/c of what looks like ease of use. Any mirrors or links that I could use that would work with my above specs? TY once again and forgive my noobness (don't want to brick my phone and want do this right the first time).

Having trouble with that link as well. When I try to download "autoroot v2.5 - Full Root Zip" gives me a "404 Page Not Found" message when trying to click on the download link. Am I doing something wrong or is this a broken link? This is what I have been running into with the 2 methods I have tried so far. I am willing to do this with adb but I would need instructions b/c my knowledge is limited. Any help appreciated.

Any luck yet?
Just curious if you had any luck, xHausx had a really good version (v2.4) but has moved onto v2.5. make sure ADB is enabled from the settings on your phone and if you want to try v2.4, PM me and I will see if I can send it to you.
No luck yet, I think 3g is down in my area right now so I will have to wait till later today to try again (wireless tether). Thanks all for the help so far. Good to know there are people here to help.

EDIT: Okay, everything is downloaded and I installed htcsync 2.0.35. I have unzipped AutoRoot v2.5 to my desktop like it says to do and I do not see "autoroot.bat" anywhere in the folder, I do see "autoroot" which is a windows batch file. How do I execute the "autoroot" file or find the "autoroot.bat" file? I tried running the "autoroot" file as administrator but it only gives me a bunch of "file not recognized" errors in the cmd window. Again, am I doing something wrong? On a side note, there seems to be no working link to unrevoked anymore so unless someone has a link I cannot root that way. All of the assistance is really appreciated. Really need to get wireless tether working. TIA.
See edit above. Sorry for the extra post.

Anyone, anything? Have mercy on my soul and please help a guy out. Promise to pass the info on. Nothing seems to be working for me on my machine for some reason (windows vista 32 bit). I don't think I did anything wrong. Could someone post the method they used (hate to ask but possibly a "step by step"). I'd be forever grateful. Thanks for the support.

The problem is that the files won't download on my computer my friend. 403-forbidden on unrevoked site and only autoroot not autoroot.bat for autoroot. I've rooted phones before, I just can't get the files cause of the computer errors. Sometimes we all need a little help so cut me some slack man. Just sayin'.

I think I was able to download the reflash package to the evo from the browser but I need drivers too right? Whatever help/files you can provide me, well, if be forever grateful. I'm really frustrated with my phone since the gingerbread upgrade and i have been looking for links to help me root my Evo, i've heard i need to downgrade or use gingerbreak so i'm confused. If anyone knows and takes the time to provide the links it will be greatly appreciate it.
IM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM DO I USE GINGER BREAK OR DO i need to downgrade FIRST PLZ HELP
Not ready yet.
I've been looking for a while about rooting the Evo 4G 2.3.3. It's not possible yet. You can try the downgrade and such, but it won't work (tried it). Just stay on this site and check the boards every few days. Once it's possible, thee will be a massive sound around the world of cheers and other....unsightly....sounds.
My friend isn't tech savvy so he had me try to root his on the ota update, so i tried gingerbreak and it sat there for at least 30 minutes not doing anything.
Root for GingerBread, EVO
I read something about revolutionary-0.4pre3, that was supposed to be a fix for that,,and also tried RUU_SuperSonic File to try and down grade, but no such luck, got a Boot Loader error,,,uuuugh,,,not happy right now--

If you have a card reader you can flash a ruu through the bootloader also why would you want to unroot completely? Based on your info you wouldn't be able to root if you unrooted because Unrevoked requires usb connectivity

with rom manager touch? well really i'd like to have it to default stock so that I can sell it without all of my info on the phone, i.e. telephone number, voicemail etc. I figured that returning to stock would achieve that. it isnt currently activated but my voicemail number shows up. Ive wiped data, dalvik, and cache but idk what else to do prior to selling

You can definitely just unroot it and leave it S-OFF by doing what evo4gnoob said. Copy a stock ROM PC36IMG.zip file to the root of your sdcard using a card reader connected to your PC (If you go to the 1st link under "My Links" in my signature, there are 3 you can use at the bottom of that post) and rename the file to just "PC36IMG.zip". Put the card back into your device, and boot into Bootloader mode (hold volume down while pressing the Power button), and it should read the stock ROM. Then choose to install the update, and the device will be fully reset and back to stock.
By the way - unless you cancel your service first, the device will still be linked to your account. If you want to get rid of that information, you'll have to do a full data reset using an EPST code. There should be a thread around here somewhere that will give you the proper code (you'll need your MSL code).
ok Ive done exactly as you guys stated getting back to stock and unrooting.. was able to reroot using unrevoked3 so im good to go! thanks guys!!
as far as the msl, i dont know that and will just have to sell as is because my phone info is obviously still there. but thanks again for the fast responses and insight

MSL Reader from the Market will tell you what it is, but you need root to use it, so you'll have to flash Superuser, if you really want to get rid of your phone info (which is probably a good idea).

First part of this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21891574&postcount=9
But if you let the phone reboot and re-activate, it'll just link back to your number, so if you don't want it to do that, you'll have to turn it off and cancel the service to it.
thanks again!
