hello everybody,
its first time to me using android os,
and i just bought HTC One X
i read alot of topics about that phone but i got lost when i found alot of things that i don't understand..
so please help me by simple answers cause i am not an expert..
1- what is S-OFF?
2- what is Locked boot loader?
3- is boot loader locked by default for all phone or just the phones that are locked to specific carrier network ?
4- my device is middle east version + officially unlocked for all networks, so is my boot loader locked?
5- i want to flash custom ROM, so i have to do (S-OFF + Root + Unlock BL + Flash ROM)
i know these things are someway connected, but in which order are they done? whats first then whats next?
6- which custom ROM is the best one that have least errors and best reviews so that it will be fast & solve the battery problem ?
i want to install custom ROM for two reasons..
first: i need to bypass the market block so i can find all programs
second: fix battery drain problem

S-On is a security feuture that HTC implemented to allow people to find their lost or stolen phone online. It is S-on by default and they(the awesome people on xda) are still working on a s-off solution.
You can still flash roms with S-on but you need your bootloader unlocked(Every One X has a locked bootloader). There is a noob friendly guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592355 on how to do so.
The best rom will depend on your own taste. The sense roms are the least buggy and because they have source code for that. Roms like Charmelean, Leedroid, ARHD and so on. You'll see they are sense roms.
On your nr.5, everything you need to know is on the link 2 paragraphs up.
Hope you manage and wellcome to xda and one X, you'll love it here.

Dude!!! S-off or s-on has absolutely nothing to do with finding your phone! Stop bsing. It's a security feature that HTC implemented to lock certain parts of the system. If you have s-off it means full root.

Yes unlike early version the radio is within the ROM. So if you flash a ROM with new base you are flashing with the new base.
What are we wanting from s-off then? If we can change the radio, remove carrier branding, change roms and sim-unlock, what else is there?

People want S-OFF so they can do stuff to their phones without having to use HTC's tool to void their warranties. I would assume that's one of the biggest ones.

You can remove carrier branding without s-off by rooting and installing a custom rom but, for sim unlock, s-off is needed.

Rooting will give you simunlock. However, there is no guarantee it will work for all carriers. There are some it does not work with.

Yes. Use the ace hack kit only to unlock/root your phone. Do not use any other method. You can flash anything in the dev section. Read the op (first page) before flashing. It will list what works and what bugs are listed.

As I know, all Dhd can be rooted by AAHK you must only follow the instructions.
As for me, the best ROM we have today for our device is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778202 there are few bugs only, but not critical for me If you want the ROM with Sense, look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792074 but this ROM works more slowly

Hi all,
sorry for my lack of knowledge, I'm a brand new HTC One X owner. I'd like to have the very standard software (ICS in this case) without the branding of T-Mobile. I've bought my phone in Poland (Europe Version).
Any step-by-step tutorials in here? I surely don't want to brick my new phone
not 100% sure on this but think only one way to debrand that is to unlock bootloader and root then install custom rom could be wrong tho

Well, I've got no problem with unlocking the bootloader etc. but I would like to have the normal ICS with HTC's Sense on the phone rather than some cyanogenmod or something along those lines. If anyone can help me out with the needed files and a step-by-step how-to (I'm not dumb when technology is involved, but I have absolutely no contact with the moding scene of Smartphones).

ARHD is a stock Rom tweaked to make it even better. you will find it much better, that is the only way to remove it, or rooting and flashing another boot animation
Easiest way I found was to unlock bootloader, root then delete all the carrier bloat you don't want and then flash a new bootanimation

Since you still opt for ICS the ARHD is the best alternative choice! Just search the thread on the XDA Developer you'll find it.

Hi,
I bought my HTC One X few months ago. And I didn't receive an update yet. When I was waiting for 4.1 JB update I see that my version is very old and I cannot even make a software update check. I don't have that menu in about section.

android version 4.0.3
HTC Sense version 4.0
Software Number 1.29.401.7 (Unlocked with HTCDev)
I searched the forum and can not find a solution for this please help.

if you dont have the option it means you have a custom rom installed
make a backup of your phone
flash 1.29.401.7 ruu.

Your phone should be on custom ROM as it do not owned a uodate check button.
You need to determine where your phone origin from by checking CID. Grab cid getter from play store or via fastboot fastboot getvar cid.
Then re-lock bootloader and flash the corresponding RUU to return to stock.
Kindly search and read some tutorials to learn before asking.
Am I right in saying that you bought your One X second hand, as obviously your bootloader has been unlocked via HTCDev
And searching under Android Development brings you right to this collection of all info that one might need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832891
Jelly Been Android 4.1 is only available for certain Hboot versions
You cand find yours by power down your device, wait a few seconds, then press Power and Vol- together and keep holding until you get to the bootloader screen.
From there you can select the recovery and see if that is installed, if not or you don't have the latest recovery installed follow this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592355
Obviously you are already unlocked so you can follow with installing your fastboot folder as described in the last thread and then install Clockworkmod 5.8.4.0 which is the latest...then do a nandroid back up of your current ROM and follow the guides to re-lock your One X, install the stock recovery for your current ROM, then run the apropriate RUU of which after you have the latest stock ROM for your fone and carrier.
BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING MAKE SURE YOUR One X IS FULLY CHARGED
I don't know how to unlock again as you won't have the initial Unlock Token mail from HTCDev...so maybe it is better to just stay with stock. So read read read and understand before you jump in! Have fun
And before byuing a second hand device next time make sure it runs all stock stuff, and if not, that you get also all documentation related to to the device you plan to purchase.

Yes it is.
Yes it is.
I bought my One X as a replacement for my Arc thinking I wouldn't need to mod it in anyway and run it as stock, due to the Mrs giving me grief about the amount of time I spent flashing/modding my arc. Resisted rooting for 5 hours and haven't looked back. Worth rooting even just for an ad-free device.
One of the first things I do is root and remove bloatware. Well worth it.
Do it well worth it. Btw I think we all get the grief from the missus about our close relationships with our phones and modding lol

Use this to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439
Before you root, make a backup in recovery, when you wanna go back to stock you just need to restore it. It's advisable to copy the backup to your pc for maximum security. (It's in /sdcard/clockworkmod) If you wanna do ota, remember to flash back stock recovery also.

No prob
It is possible that you lose some stuff.
First of all, dl an app called carbon. It will let you backup your apps without root. If you wanna back up sms, etc. There's an app for that, just search.
Then connect your hox to a pc and copy ALL the files from your sdcard to your pc.
Now you should be safe to continue.
I never lost anything when rooting but better be safe than sorry.

3.1.10 is the Linux kernel version it is based on
g9fb8f80 is some crap I know nothing about

#1 means that it was the first build
smp stands for Symmetric Multi-Processors
preempt stands for PREEMPtable
