Just bought a kindle and have some ?s - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I bought a kindle fire today and really like it. however, I was thinking about rooting it and wanted to know the perks. My question is if I do so how do you view your books and so forth and use your Amazon account? I see a lot of ics development and it looks like my phone which I love but are the rooms integrated for kindle operation? I see that it has the play store but what happens to the Amazon app store? Thanks for all input it's greatly appreciated.

I am running GedeROM 6/3 which is an ICS rom for the kindle fire and I love it! I use the amazon kindle app to read all my books, and I use the amazon mp3 player app for all my cloud music. The play store is about 1000 times better than the amazon app store, the play store is just the android market.

I am a college student and received an Amazon Kindle Fire for Christmas. I have to say I appreciate it 10x more now that I rooted it and installed a custom ROM. I am currently running Hellfire v1.3. Any ROM will take your stock Kindle Fire to the next level and make it a "on-the-budget" Android Tab device, which is well worth is for half the price. As chris_m128 said you will have to use the Amazon Kindle app for Droid to read, which you can link to your Amazon account and recover all your books and the app is just as good as a stock Kindle Fire is for reading books. Also, to answer your question regarding the Amazon app store you can, oddly enough, download that through the Play Store. I haven't, and truly see no purpose since the Play Store is a much better alternative. As for your question regarding ROMs there are a ton for the Kindle Fire, well at least in comparison to most phones. You can't go wrong rooting your Kindle Fire, but if you plan to go that far you might as well install a custom ROM and use it to it's fullest potential. I can guarantee you that you won't regret it.

Thank you both for the input. I think I have made up my mind haha root it is. Sounds great and we'll worth it. I was just worried the functionality of the Kindle would not be as good since my girl specifically wanted it for the book portion. I love ics and am running Cm9 on my galaxy s2 and to have it on kindle bad ass. So thanks again.

We also bought the extended warranty for it. Does un rooting make it lagit enough to turn it back in if a problem occurs? I know with the phone it did but a tablet I don't know haha.

90% of all problems that occur are user error so just don't make mistakes

i had no rooting, rom background before i got my kindle fire around christmas. the thing that made me switch to rooted with a custom rom was the fact that angry birds space costs $4.99 in the amazon appstore for the "KINDLE" version and only .99 cents in the google play store. i still use my amazon appstore for free app of the day, free games are always a plus in my book. read, read, read then watch youtube videos and follow step for step and you can do it with no problems. i ended up rooting my evo 4g from info on this site and now have free wifi tether on my phone so i always have internet for my kindle fire. good luck and enjoy. this site kicks ass.

From what i read, you can. An xda member had a friend with a pawn shop that accidentally bought one, so he gave his buddy a couple bucks for it and put cm7 on it, and it worked

Guess it depends on what you mean by a Demo Kindle Fire? Is it locked down in some special way or registered to someone else?

I don't see why it would be any different from a normal Fire, just different software for demoing.

When I brought my new kindle fire home and set it up. I had the option to run the Store demo . Of course I didn't.
I rooted , and installed the bootloader .and eyecandy 3.5.1 nice Rom
I have no idea what you mean by a demo unit... I checked ebay and there were no results for "kindle fire demo" or "kindle fire store unit"

He is talking about the Kindle Fires that stores use as a display, they usually have some sort of demo reel on it so it can't be used as a regular tablet.
I did this with a demo Xoom but I had to re partition it. It had a special partition that help the demo software and even when I rooted the tablet and put a custom ROM it would re install that demo software on the first boot. I found the partition info on the tablet here and seen that it was different, so I re partitioned it to the stock setup deleting the demo software and its been great ever since. I had a demo Nokia Lumina that simply flashing the stock rom removed it.
So I am sure it can be done, just may take some extra effort. Rarely are the demo units physically different that real models.
Yes you can. I got one off ebay and rooted. I was able to install the stock rom and register with amazon. I have since loaded jellybean. I did a backup of the demo software but didn't need it.

You should upload a zip of the demo software, I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in seeing it.
I know I asked about this awhile ago but I just today won a demo kindle fire and can't wait top put jelly bean on it. Any advice from others with demo units?

It's not a Kindle Fire HD if that is what you are talking about. Are there different versions of the OG Kindle Fire? It is a demo unit, is there something I should be looking for specifically on it when I get it?

I never thought about it, but a good way to go buying a demo unit that 'most' people wont know how to root and install a custom rom to it.
Like others, I am sure it will root and install a custom rom just fine. I am using twa_priv rom on 2 Kindle Fire's for my kids, they are such great little tablets now.

I was always curious how (un)happy amazon when they see akf users jail broke their akf and using alternative rom such as cm.
Can they see it from me using amazon app store or another Amazon apps in general ?

whoops wrong button.. the only thing I noticed is that if you got an app from google play and you want to update it in the appstore it requires you uninstalling the old app to install the appstore version just a guess that relates to permissions on the appstore side. no big really... but of course for them it boils down to$$$$$

Amazon is a company. As with any company, they're in the business of making money. When users install custom ROMs, Amazon misses out on a significant amount of potential revenue. So presumably, they wouldn't appreciate it all that much, which would explain why they aren't making 1st generation Kindle Fires anymore. Another thing that happens when users install custom ROMs, is the device shows up on the Amazon website as a Android device, which surely throws off their records a bit. They have no real data when it comes to how much money each device earns in certain areas, like app store, VOD, books, etc. Needless to say, they probably aren't thrilled.
I guess what I'm trying to understand if they can know for sure that you not using their rom, like matching some unique identifier of some kind (serial number) that can tell them that they sold that tablet to me and I'm not on their rom by me using their app store or another Amazon app.
Any ideas if they collect that kind of information or if its even possible to do.

2nd gen Kindle Fire? wtf

I just bought a Kindle Fire thinking it was the same one I purchased several months ago and returned because I didn't like it... Well now that it's $159 I thought.. why not?
Upon looking at the forums here I've noticed it's not the same tablet is it? It's a "2nd gen" version.. no one has found root and there's zero roms for it. What a ****ter. I'm returning this POS.

Optimism is overrated.......anyways....why be upset about having an upgraded Kindle? More RAM, updated stock ROM......but one thing that confuses me (which is easily done) is Amazon's website specifies both the Kindle Fire (1st gen) and 2nd gen have the same OMAP 4430 CPU but states 1st gen has 1GHz of course and the 2nd gen has 1.2GHz stock.....???? I've always been nervous to use the overclocked 1.2GHz max frequency but if its used stock on the 2nd gen.....wtf? Lol
Sent from my rooted SCH-R880 POS
Probably the same CPU but a different revision.
Anyway it is probably just a matter of time before some smart devs crack this code and have root for it
Moral of the story: Don't buy a kindle fire or other locked down Android device unless you know there is a well established hacking and ROMing community to help you unlock it.

Yesterday I my Xperia fell and broke and there is no way to repair it which has left me with the option to buy a new one. I would like to buy that is new but less than $200. Would like some help in giving advice. I don't buy from eBay.

If you don't mind getting the Verizon version then go on craigslist. They have them for 100 dollars. But if your interested in custom Roms the r800x is not the way to go. There's also another website someone posted that sold them for 70 with a special code but I forgot what it was called because it had a weird name

Here is a list from Amazon, at one point there was a deal site (I think it was through slickdeals.net) that listed them for $69.

If you are looking for the GSM model, I have seen them as low as $129. If I should come across anything I will post here.

You can get the Verizon version brand new on CowBoom for around $70-100 (price fluctuates). Otherwise, it's going to be hard to find new GSM one for less than $250 or so.
So I don't think I want New as long it in new conditions and comes with ALL the accessories because Ive seen sellers on Amazon who only give buyers the Phone with battery + the charger and but no SDCard and there NEW. My first one didn't come with SDcard which I know all R800x and R800at or a or i should have one. I want R800x for now since I am on CricKet but want to change to AT&T although that won't happen. All I want is to put JB Themes and Root no ROM since a lot of those seem to not work properly.

Hey, I found a deal for the R800x thats for $150. New and all accessories but no original sdcard. Do you guys think this is good deal? Just one question: Does the 7 preloaded games are inside the 2GB original card? Just asking because the 7 games are the 16th reason why I want that phone. I mean 7 free games! That's a sweet deal for a phone that has a gamepad.

Kindle fire barley charging.

Hi everybody,
I have a kindle fire that about a month ago began charging at like 1% per 10 - 60 minutes, the thing is that the cable of the charger is quite loose but it has been loose before the problem too... . So, I'll tell you what I did, Used Battery Calabrator, tried 3 roms, tried numerous power outlets with the charger and wiped battery stats. I'm totally lost guys .
What should I do to fix this? Is there even a way?, or should I just buy a nexus 7 cause now the nexus 7 2 is out? I don't have a lot of money spare so yeah, I can use some of your advice Should I get a new charger or something? If I should buy a new tab can you please send me a link to a good seller with a low price. If there is a way tell me plz , if not thanks again
Thanks,
Daniel

If you still have the One Year limited warranty, unroot the kindle fire and ask Amazon for a replacement. Its very common that kindles don't charge and is covered by their warranty. Just make sure it wasn't you who messed up the charging port.
