2nd gen Kindle Fire? wtf - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a Kindle Fire thinking it was the same one I purchased several months ago and returned because I didn't like it... Well now that it's $159 I thought.. why not?
Upon looking at the forums here I've noticed it's not the same tablet is it? It's a "2nd gen" version.. no one has found root and there's zero roms for it. What a ****ter. I'm returning this POS.

Lol

Optimism is overrated.......anyways....why be upset about having an upgraded Kindle? More RAM, updated stock ROM......but one thing that confuses me (which is easily done) is Amazon's website specifies both the Kindle Fire (1st gen) and 2nd gen have the same OMAP 4430 CPU but states 1st gen has 1GHz of course and the 2nd gen has 1.2GHz stock.....???? I've always been nervous to use the overclocked 1.2GHz max frequency but if its used stock on the 2nd gen.....wtf? Lol
Sent from my rooted SCH-R880 POS

Probably the same CPU but a different revision.
Anyway it is probably just a matter of time before some smart devs crack this code and have root for it

Moral of the story: Don't buy a kindle fire or other locked down Android device unless you know there is a well established hacking and ROMing community to help you unlock it.

Fast-Boot Kf

I Got a KF a few months ago and it booted up slow but it booted the same speed as my friend's and my cousins. But after it had problems and I got a new one (the one I'm posting from) I saw that its boot time was much less. Does anyone know why this is?

Might be new kindle fire rom improvements. Amazon does them sometimes. I guess that made it speed up.

Demo Kindle Fire ... can you root them and make them a real tablet?

I was wondering if this story I heard is true.

From what i read, you can. An xda member had a friend with a pawn shop that accidentally bought one, so he gave his buddy a couple bucks for it and put cm7 on it, and it worked

Guess it depends on what you mean by a Demo Kindle Fire? Is it locked down in some special way or registered to someone else?

Like the kind you find in a store on display. They sell for insanely cheep on Ebay

I don't see why it would be any different from a normal Fire, just different software for demoing.

When I brought my new kindle fire home and set it up. I had the option to run the Store demo . Of course I didn't.
I rooted , and installed the bootloader .and eyecandy 3.5.1 nice Rom
I have no idea what you mean by a demo unit... I checked ebay and there were no results for "kindle fire demo" or "kindle fire store unit"

He is talking about the Kindle Fires that stores use as a display, they usually have some sort of demo reel on it so it can't be used as a regular tablet.
I did this with a demo Xoom but I had to re partition it. It had a special partition that help the demo software and even when I rooted the tablet and put a custom ROM it would re install that demo software on the first boot. I found the partition info on the tablet here and seen that it was different, so I re partitioned it to the stock setup deleting the demo software and its been great ever since. I had a demo Nokia Lumina that simply flashing the stock rom removed it.
So I am sure it can be done, just may take some extra effort. Rarely are the demo units physically different that real models.
Yes you can. I got one off ebay and rooted. I was able to install the stock rom and register with amazon. I have since loaded jellybean. I did a backup of the demo software but didn't need it.

You should upload a zip of the demo software, I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in seeing it.
I know I asked about this awhile ago but I just today won a demo kindle fire and can't wait top put jelly bean on it. Any advice from others with demo units?

It's not a Kindle Fire HD if that is what you are talking about. Are there different versions of the OG Kindle Fire? It is a demo unit, is there something I should be looking for specifically on it when I get it?

Yeah, this should be fine. Have you done normal kindle fires?
Download kfu, run install_drivers.bat connect your kf, do the run.bat and do what one normally does.

I never thought about it, but a good way to go buying a demo unit that 'most' people wont know how to root and install a custom rom to it.
Like others, I am sure it will root and install a custom rom just fine. I am using twa_priv rom on 2 Kindle Fire's for my kids, they are such great little tablets now.

Kindle Glass Panel Issue

So.
My Kindle Fire 1st Gen has a glass panel issue where it doesn't adhere fully to the Lcd. It's been like this since I bought it.
I kind of procrastinated about sending it for warranty since I needed to use it. And now that Kindle Fire 2 has been released, and the OG kindle fire is out of stock, I fear that sending my Kindle Fire in will result in Amazon giving me a Kindle Fire 2, which has a locked bootloader.
Crap. What do I do?

Amazon still has hardware for repairs and such.
To start you could post in the correct section, so i have moved this to the Q&A section for you, and then not having a title that is of no use to anyone, so i have changed that for you to.

Okay thanks
Hmm. But there's the worry that they'll be like apple and give a a kindle fire 2 back. Like how when you send in your iPhone 4 for warranty, you get a new model if it was a hardware issue.

1st or 2nd generation Kindle? How do you know?

I have a rooted 1st gen Kindle Fire, and a friend has asked me to root a new one for her Mum. It looks the same as mine, but I'm not sure its a 1st gen.
Is there a way to tell without taking it out of the packaging?

Without taking it out of the package?.....hmm.....maybe get some information from the package if it's available like a barcode etc. and either use a barcode scanner app or call Amazon with the info and see if they can tell you

Check the version of it in settings. If it says 6.3.x, or even just 6.x.x, it's a 1st gen.

Kindle fire barley charging.

Hi everybody,
I have a kindle fire that about a month ago began charging at like 1% per 10 - 60 minutes, the thing is that the cable of the charger is quite loose but it has been loose before the problem too... . So, I'll tell you what I did, Used Battery Calabrator, tried 3 roms, tried numerous power outlets with the charger and wiped battery stats. I'm totally lost guys .
What should I do to fix this? Is there even a way?, or should I just buy a nexus 7 cause now the nexus 7 2 is out? I don't have a lot of money spare so yeah, I can use some of your advice Should I get a new charger or something? If I should buy a new tab can you please send me a link to a good seller with a low price. If there is a way tell me plz , if not thanks again
Thanks,
Daniel

If you still have the One Year limited warranty, unroot the kindle fire and ask Amazon for a replacement. Its very common that kindles don't charge and is covered by their warranty. Just make sure it wasn't you who messed up the charging port.
