[Q] Just Got DINC2. Need a little advice. - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Just got a DINC2 replacement after 2 years with original dinc. My hope was to root and S-off ASAP. After a little searching I am not sure how to proceed. I have 0.98 bootloader with Android 2.3.4 and 5.10.605.9 software version.
I see that revolutionary does not have option for my bootloader. I also see a thread with a downgrade tool. I also saw a sticky saying not to download the bootloader.
Where do I go now with this?
Thanks.

If you have a way to get a xtc clip to get s off you will be ok. There are people that have been able to get s off with your software version but then have bootloop issues with sense roms. For some reason aosp roms are ok. There are many threads on this make sure you read up before deciding what to do. But I did read with the clip to get s off no issues with sense roms.

Thanks for the reply! This is very disappointing. I really do not want to shell out $50 on a clip. It seems all I can do otherwise is wait for an OTA or a fix.

If he's on the 5.x version he can downgrade, and then use revolutionary.

With the 5.x software, use the downgrade tool in development, and s-off with revolutionary.
Edit: sorry, just noticed tyler's post says almost exactly the same thing.

Sorry looks like yours is not the newer software so you should be able to downgrade with revolutionary. Sorry if I miss guided you. There is a lot of people with the newer version having problems.

ok so what ive read here is if the phone is
SOFTWARE version 5.10.605.9
then downgrade + revolutionary. Hboot is .98, for what it's worth.
Also, another question, if the phone is past the 1 year warrenty, is it worth while to just use the HTCDev unlocking, or does this not 'fully' unlock the device to community needs?

Software version 5.x you should downgrade. It'll give you a lot more freedom.

Sorry for miss leading you at first. I downgraded with revolutionary and everything went great. There are some helpful videos on you tube on the downgrade process if you get stuck.

[Q] S-OFF and Root Achieved.

Hello!
I recently spent some time to achieve S-OFF and root for my incredible 2 thanks to attn1 on the alpharevx irc channel. I'm at the point now where I'm wondering what steps to take next? I've heard that Verizon is coming out with GB for the incredible 2 some time in the beginning of August. If I wait for that and update officially via Verizon, will I lose my S-OFF and root abilities? Or will I later be able to install roms and things like CM7/Sense 3.0?
I apologize if this has been answered before, but I don't want to upgrade my phone officially if I'm going to lose my S-OFF and root in doing so.
Thanks.

Chances are that if you take an official update it could overwrite the AlphaRevX bootloader and you will lose S-OFF. Best rule of thumb has always been once an official update hits, give the devs a couple of hours and there will be a fully rooted version that you can safely flash and not worry about losing S-OFF.
Sounds like a plan. Will it ask me to install the update once it arrives or will it install automatically? D:
Thanks for your help!
Where can I find the software for the S-off? I went to alpharevx site and the Windows version is currently "under review"
I had the original Incredible and the screen got messed up so I picked up the DInc2. It's been awhile since I had to do this, but having S-Off will allow me to flash ROM's, correct?

Yes, S-OFF will allow you to flash a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod and that is how you will flash custom ROMs.
There are some threads that discuss how to use a Ubuntu LiveCD to run the Linux version of AlphaRevX while you wait for the Windows version to come back online.

Incredible 2 (vivow) with hboot .98?

So I just got a droid incredible 2 and was planning to run revolutionary on it to get S-OFF and root it. I tried to get started but apparently I have HBOOT .98 rather than the supported .97.
Does anyone know if the latest OTA is to blame for this or something about new dinc2's?
Is there a way to downgrade HBOOTs?
No, you cannot downgrade, not without root anyway, which you cannot get since it's not supported yet (see here). No clue when it will be, and I doubt anyone else does either
Didn't this forum already go through this once already before the GB root was available? Feels like deja vu
Wow, that was quick... Verizon must've already had a batch of new Dinc2's already updated and shipped before they did the OTA update a few days ago... .98 Hboot is what is coming in the latest OTA updates.
Looking like a new wave of XtcClip buyers again till the Devs can achieve S-Off again for the .98 Hboot.
So not knowing anything about HBOOT, besides the version, I know the Desire S is supported on HBOOT version .98.
Are these completely different or the same across all HTC phones?
I don't know if it has been confirmed that HTC clip supports .98 hboot either. but hopefully it works!
Will the HBOOT .98 ever be unlocked? I just got the INC2 and it automatically installed when I left the house for a few minutes!!!! Is it possible someone will unlock this?? I got the phone mainly so I can OC it and put on custom roms, WTF!! (

Ill be getting my inc 2 tomorrow (replacement for inc 1) and it wouldn't surprise me if I'm stuck in the same dilemma. Disappointing but ill have to wait because my inc 1 isn't functioning anyway.
Looking forward to the battery life though anyway. I had to go to aosp for better battery life with dinc 1 anyway.

DInc II arrived on Friday.
I got soo lucky when I pushed customer service to give me an early upgrade.
It cost a total of $99.99 billed in Oct.
I worked real hard at rooting it, and come Monday I see it payed off.
I'm sure that it is only a matter of time that devs will discover, test, test and distribute the magic that they are soo good at.
I tried to donate to them but PayPal or AMEX was not an option and it has been so long that I looked at a money order that I don't think it would be worth the $0.60 USD + a postage stamp to mess with it.
Does any one know of a NORMAL way to donate to AlphaRevX or Revolutionary?
I plan on trying to get another DInc II in January (if it is still around).
me too
+1 stuck with S-ON and the 0.98.0000 HBOOT from OTA...
FYI
I just sent my Dinc2 in for warranty and the replacement has Hboot .97
now that XTC clips (everyone) are now unlimited, from beta to actual unlimited clips, so should try to find one.
Im pretty sure alpharev is working on s off for our 98 hboot they where asking for just that hboot or a link to the ota.... Pretty good sign

Workaround for 2.3.4?
Apologies if this post outs me as a total noob, but I'm only a week into my budding love affair with the DInc2 and Android, and I've already made one stupid misstep, as my phone came with HBOOT .97, and I foolishly took the OTA, realizing about a day later that yes, I would like to root this phone.
Being impatient, I was googling around to see if there were any solutions, when I found a link to a guide to unroot the Incredible 2 (which apparently I'm not allowed to link to yet). Basically, what this guide does is reflash the phone to 2.2 via an official signed update package (which should be able to be dropped on the SD card of the phone and flashed via the power/volume down method), gain temp root and manually reflash the HBOOT with .97 (via a dd command), and then upgrades (via another package to be flashed from the SD card, not OTA) to 2.3.3. At that point, I believe I could use the current version of revolutionary to gain S-Off, root the phone via the normal method, and be set to go.
Now, my question: is this going to result in a bricked device or a lot of wasted effort? Can the phone even take a signed update from the SD card without being S-Off? And will it trip me up when I try to flash to 2.2 because it's older than what's currently on the phone? Has anyone thought to try this? Waiting for Revolutionary to update is probably the smarter course of action, but I am one to push the limits of the technology around me, so unless someone out there knows that this won't work, I'll likely give it a go.
You will need to update to 2.3.3 leaked ruu to s-off anyways

Rooting incredible2

Can we use the desire s alpharev
Way to root the incredible 2. Since it has the same hboot. But the question is will it pick up ur phone. Might be a dumb question but worth asking.

are you on 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
He's obviously asking about the latest OTA. I was wondering the same thing when I saw it was the same bootloader version.
I don't think it'd work, being as the hardware is totally different.
Sent from my rooted MIUI Dinc2
I'm by no means telling you to try it but I do know that the virtuous team had a way to flash a different hboot on a device. I can't remember if it was the incraedible s or the desire s though. Might wanna check in with them
I don't recommend it. Especially since AlphaRev has an S-Off tool for rooting the DINC2, which is what I used, and it's almost entirely idiot-proof (which was really good for me at the time). There's also a YouTube walk-through of the process.
Yea but is for the 0.97.0000 bootloader not the 0.98.0000 bootloader. I used that same video for my previous dinc2 but I got this one and it git the update thru the first night I had it. Anywayz I want to root but need more info and nobody has asked this question and I hate waiting for the reach around. <<<< funny

I am extremely interested in this, as i also did the OTA update to 2.3.4 before checking to see if there was a root for it yet (dumb, i know...). Figured the device was as popular as the dinc 1 and would get root updates pretty fast.
I seen that alpharevx was asking for a link to our 98 hboot on twitter, to me that's a pretty good sign that they are working on an exploit for 2.3.4

[Q] Trying to root Inc with SLCD, many, many problems..

So I'll make this short. I got a replacement Inc today but it is a SLCD version. For the life of me, I just can't seem to get it rooted. unRevoked fails no matter what I try. Also somehow in the 5+ hours I've been trying to do this, I "upgraded" the hboot to 1.02.000 and have that "locked oow" message in pink. I'm thinking this is a bad thing.
Any tips out there as to what my next steps should be. I am currently unrooted and have s-on. It's stock 2.3.4 also. Thanks!
The only way to root 2.3.4 once your bootloader is 1.02 is through Cmlusco's guide here:

[Q] Need some help rooting and such

Hello all im hoping i dont get ridiculed for asking this but i need help rooting and and installing a custom recovery on my dads dinc. i I have a fair bit of knowlege with some of this but it appears to be nothing like rooting my little optimus v. i have found many guilds but they all seem to be from 2010. i know htc has a program for unlocking the bootloader but his hboot doesnt seem to be listed as a supported device. all he wants is a nice stable rom that will do away with the headaches of the stock sense rom (like the constant low memory warning). i can do all of this for him, im just a little confused as the best way of doing it. ive never had to deal with an htc before, im not even sure what the s-off is even for, so any help with this would be greatly appreciated

What hboot, radio, and android version is the phone currently on?
As for unlocking with htcdev, it makes you do an ruu which updates the hboot to a unlockable version.
S-off means security off and it allows you to flash unsigned images thru hboot such as new radios and splash screens.
The Android version is 2.3.4, and I can't remember how to get to the hboot to get that version number, I don't know were the radio version is

You can get both the radio (baseband), and hboot versions by booting to hboot. Power off the phone, pull the battery and reinsert, and then hold vol down and power till a white screen appears (hboot). It will tell you both versions in the top left corner.
Hboot is 0.92.0000

Correct you can root and flash roms without being s-off. However s-off has some great advantages, like being able to flash radios, splash screens, and allows you to edit system files, along with some other stuff. S-off also makes it much easier to reroot should you somehow loose root in the future.
Hi highly recommend going S-OFF. As daunting as it may seem, it's really not that hard, and you won't regret it. Nothing really worked right for me S-ON, so just having S-ON alone might give you headaches.
yup if u already through the trouble to get root then why dont get s-off too, its really worth the time and trouble getting both root and s-off.
