I did some googling but nothing came up. Sometimes I get this kind of message in my notification bar (see attachment). It has the same icon as Updating/downloading. But I'm pretty sure that's not the case. If I tap on that message, it will open the default browser and take me to a site.
I have tried Airpush detector & Zone anti-virus but nothing came up. Does anybody have any idea how this thing got on my phone? Also is there a way to prevent this from happening?
Thanks bunch!!! =)
What ROM are you using?
Thanks for the quick reply. FYI I'm using stock at the moment. =)
So it looks like something is being downloaded from your browser every time you open it, check Chrome (if installed), and the stock browser, and close all of the tabs you have open, then clear your history and cache files, and see if that will help.
Did you check the running apps list when that comes up?

It might not have anything to do with the browser. It just directs him through the browser. It is probably an app.
Thanks for the advise! Here is the list of apps running at the time:
Settings
WhatsApp
Dropbox
Birzzle
ScoreMobile
GO SMS Pro
Facebook
Widgetsoid
Zedge
Google Services
Media
Maps
Android keyboard
Post the services that are running too.

Birzzle looks suspicious. It's just a game but why does it need a permission to start at boot? Try uninstalling that and see if your problem persists.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Well, don't only check the apps that are running, always check cached processes.
Force stop every app you don't need at the moment and then check if the problem persists, if yes, reboot the phone, if it still downloads this, check your running apps, and see if there is an app, that was there, when you closed the other processes, open the browser, and clear cache of websites, cookies etc., if neccessary, re-flash stock ROM, but the last option is worst-case...

My phone had been working fine all week and today it did some really wierd things. I am on srf 1.2 and genocide kernal.
First thing I noticed was that the market chanhed looks on me, I like the old style of market. The one that has green borders all around. I booted the market up and it was all normal. I then downloaded an app and I noticed it was going very slow so I cancled and loaded market again and just like that the market appearence was totally different. It had grey boarders and all the apps were lined up in a grid pattern. You dif not have to scroll down to look at the list of apps. It also seemed alot slower.
The second thing is I use opera mini browser for my internet. Youtube vids were working fine then all of sudden it said that the vids were not compatabe or somethong like that. It was just not one video it was all of them.
So I went to cwm and wiped cache and dalvik then restored. This fixed the youtube problem, but the market switched again later for no reason.
Any suggestions? Thanls
Both apps updated today. You could try uninstalling updates in applications.

Well with the market they pushed out a new version, as you can tell. Youtube, I can't help you on that

I like the new market.
Posted from my awesome EPIC.
Lol, you're talking about the market that everyone (most of us) had weeks back before it was updated to the public. =P as for the Youtube issue, all with epics and many other phones share your issue, just go to settings, manage applications, select youtube, and uninstall the update for now.

Where is Opera getting that address from? It is not a valid address. Is it some type of redirector? Rather than drive yourself crazy wouldn't it be easier to switch browsers? Like to Dolphin or Miren?
I picked up a refurbed Fire and it arrived last week; great device!
I haven't rooted, but I've sideloaded a few apps and I'm running ADW as my launcher. I have DophinHD set as my default browser.
When opening links, Silk will sometimes come up instead of Dolphin. This happens when opening links in e-mails. Now, I can sorta see why that may happen since I'm using the native e-mail app. It also happens when opening links in Pulse; an app factory loaded. But what really confuses me is that Silk will open when I click a link on Facebook. I side loaded the Andriod Facebook app.
Is there any way to change this? I don't have a big hangup with Silk, I've just got Dophin set up the way I like it. I've tried clearing the cache on Silk and removing the defaults...even did a reboot. It'll still open as mentioned above.
I played around with some settings this weekend; no luck. Any advice is appreciated.
I think this issue is solved. How? A simple reboot of the device. I had installed another, unrelated app (Roku remote) and that app wasn't showing up in my app drawer. After rebooting the device, the app was there. And suddenly, links from e-mail and FB were opening in Dolphin. I had also updated Dolphin over the weekend; maybe that helped.
So I guess I should have tried the simplest solution first; reboot. Hopefully, this will help someone if they have the same issue in the future.
Hi there.
I thought my only issue with the Note 2 was the driver issues some are experiencing. Now that I avoid it by plugging into my Win7 machine, rather than my Vista machine, that problem is no more.
But recently another issue I thought was minor is really starting to aggravate me now. For some reason, ever since Jelly Bean came around (even on my G-Nexus) I have had issues with default apps saving.
For example, when browsing either using Chrome or the stock Internet browser, I select an IMdB link and a pop up window appears asking what default app I would like to address these link types. I select the IMdB app, and ALWAYS.....then a window pops up showing how to clear defaults which I have to hit: OK. So all in all, I have to hit 3 or 4 more buttons after selecting a link.
The next time I select an IMdB link, I have to do the process all over again......meaning Android is not saving my selected default apps. I thought it might be app specific, but this issue is happening with nearly any default I select. It also doesn't have to be a reboot that wipes my choices......it just never remembers. Same with YouTube, and other apps I choose for defaults.....they don't stick.
The only defaults that work are some non-Google/system based app to app default choices. By this I mean, in ES File Explorer, if I select a default video player, image viewer, text viewer, or audio player they stick. Meaning, if I pick an image while in ES, QuickPic automatically opens. A video, MXPlayer opens etc.
The issue only seems to happen with system or google apps, but is consistent. This problem is getting very annoying, and my google searches over the last couple days have yielded me nothing helpful.
My question is this, has anyone seen this before, and if so do they have a possible workaround or solution they could suggest? Thank you much, in advance.
I have the same issue and started a thread for it... I didn't get any answers
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Hmmmm. Thats not the news I wanted to hear lol. Ive managed to work around my problem a little by installing Default App Manager Pro and then installing Opera mobile and setting it as default browser app. I get far fewer pop ups and at least the imdb page on Opera is close to the app. As well, if I search something and it goes to a YouTube link it first goes to the browser page but as soon as I touch the video to play it, the YouTube app opens. Not perfect but far better than being asked to set defaults EVERY time I search the internet, then having my defaults ignored and asked again.....and again.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
Is using that app the only solution for this?
I got my wife a Note 2 yesterday, and each time we've rebooted it, it forgets what we chose for the default app, going back to the stock launcher, and no longer using SwiftKey by default.
Each and every time... re-selecting the things she wants... Quite aggravating.
I never had this issue on my S3
I'm wondering if you have installed custom roms or mods. If so, have you tried going to recovery manager and running :fix permissions:? My thinking is that maybe it's trying to write to a read only file and failing silently. Thus the next time it reads default apps, there are no defined preferences.
I don't know for sure that's even the case, but it would make sense logically on any system.

Right now, it's happening to be on a brand new vanilla Note 2
Is rooting my phone and nuking the default .apk's the only option to fix this problem?
Hate to bump an old thread, but I'm having the exact same issue. Every time I reboot all of my default apps disappear and I have to choose them again. They seem to last for the entire session. Stock rom but rooted.

Same here....6 week old Note 2, not rooted. It is saving virtually no default programs...not the launcher, the browser, not documents. Seems that if there are more than one app that COULD open a file, Note 2 will ask for the preferred app, regardless of whether a default had been previously saved / set or not.
Bummer. I did try using a "Default App Manager", went through the process of setting my selected defaults...made absolutely no difference at all!
Judi
If you are on a custom ROM I do not know what to tell you. If you are on stock each time you install or uninstall an app that will perform an action when you click on something the Note will ask if you want to do it once or always. So if you install a new browser and you click on a link it will ask which browser you want to use. If you then uninstall a browser the next time you click on a link you will be asked again. If you are being asked more than that then there is a problem somewhere. If a factory reset does not work and you are still under warranty I would call and find out if that is something that is covered. I wish I knew off hand which app keeps track of your defaults then you could just clear that app and see if that helps.
This is happening on my stock galaxy s4 for t-mobile.. app defaults are not saving. I think it's a broader problem than just the note 2.
Wondering if anyone has found a solution or made any progress????

The HTC One's stock browser comes with three locked bookmarks. I was wondering if there's a way to delete them without root? I've tried the bookbmark sort & backup and bookmark manager apps without any luck.

If you're OK with Chrome you can sidestep the locked bookmark issue -- I've just hidden the stock browser from the app tray and don't even think about it. Another nice feature from Chrome is it will sync your bookmarks from other devices if you log in with the same Google account.
EDIT: ah, interesting -- just noticed a "Verizon" bookmarks folder in my Mobile bookmarks folder. Can't delete it. Hmmm, doesn't seem too distracting...

Hey Matt, appreciate the input. Yep I have chrome and opera mini installed, as well as dolphin, which used to be my main browser. I recently read about the dolphin browser being from china or routing data to a Chinese server, so I've pretty much stopped using it. The stock browser actually isn't bad - it feels just as fast as Chrome overall, and I like the "lab" UI on the stock browser a lot. And it seems to sync with the bookmarks from the google account too.
Stupid Verizon... guess we'll have to wait until root to delete them!

So what's this lab UI you speak of -- or did you mean to say "tab"? Is it worth unhiding the stock browser to check out? Didn't realize it also syncs Google bookmarks. Guess I should check those things before offering advice!
FWIW...speaking of root, this is my fifth day with the One and I'm totally understanding those "I can live with this phone as-is" testimonials. My only concern is whether it will start to slow down without regular shots of fstrim (which we'll get someday with 4.3). At least I know now how to get into the bootloader/ecovery to clear the regular cache.

Nope, I meant labs! It's almost like an easter egg... go to Settings --> Labs --> turn on Quick Control.
This puts the stock browser in full screen mode and hides everything. Very clean! The control is tricky at first - what I've discovered works best for me is to use the side of my thumb and roll over from the edge, as if running over a finger print scanner. Then, a wheel pops up with all settings, bookmarks, etc. Once you get the hang of it, it's super intuitive and so elegant.
And you know what... the same thing was already in my Rezound stock browser too! Maybe it's Sense thing? If so, HTC really sucks at marketing - I really love this feature.
Also I read in some posts that the stock browser gave the best battery life. In light of all the tracking going on, I am starting to try to pull back from all things Google. So for now, I am enjoying the stock browser - save for the stupid Verizon locked bookmarks!
What's this about fstrim and cleaning cache? Mind elaborating?

Wow Eric, thanks for filling in the blanks. I definitely have to try it.
Here's the quick breakdown on my side:
fstrim -- The TRIM function in Android/Linux takes memory space that has been deleted, and informs the memory controller that it's available (it normally doesn't check until it tries to find writable space which eats up CPU time). The fstrim function has been added to 4.3 and runs quietly when the device is idle (you can also run the Lagfix app, but it requires root). As a case study, it totally transformed the slow and pokey 1st gen Nexus 7 into a speedy beast.
cache cleaning -- Ideally, we'd have root and could occasionally delete the Dalvik cache as well as the regular data cache. Unfortunately we can't do the first, but we can still do the latter by booting into the bootloader (this post helped me figure it out) and then just running the "wipe cache" option. I suspect it's something that won't be frequently needed on the One, but I'm glad we have the option.
EDIT: based on your sig I'm guessing that second part about cache-cleaning was pitched way too low -- if so, sorry -- it's a bad habit of mine!

For me, yes, the stock browser picked up the Chrome bookmarks. The interesting thing is that it didn't carry over the bookmark icons or labels. They're just blank, generic bookmarks for some reason. I have to guess which is which. Folder names translated over for some reason. Weird.
I used Dolphin for the longest time since I was caught up in the stigma that the stock browser sucks. I couldn't have been more wrong.
About 3 months ago I ditched Dolphin and started using the default browser in CM9, and loved it. Now all I use is the stock browser. It does its thing very well and never fusses about updates in the play store or routes traffic through China.

Oh no you're good Matt - being helpful and spreading useful info is never a bad habit I actually didn't think about this before, but yeah basically all phones are essentially running on small SSDs and TRIM support would be crucial to long-term performance.

Haha well I am glad to help! So I renamed both and wiped both davlik and the normal cache partition in TWRP. Just rebooted. Nothing. What I did was apparently allow them to be removed from Chrome and I assume other browsers. They must be hard coded in the stock. I've never used it. I bet the apk will have to be dismantled to get them gone.

Oh yeah I had them disabled in Chrome already. I was talking about the stock. You're probably right. Dammit Verizon...
For a while now, I am unable to save images in Chrome (no matter if regular, developer or beta. Even NoChromo displays the same behaviour). I cannot share images either, for example via Viber, but it works via FB Messenger. I rooted the phone 2 days ago and reinstalled everything, but the problem still persists! Strangely enough, some images do appear in the gallery after a while, some don't, but if I try to open it immediately in gallery, I get an exclamation mark logo, and google photos says "could not load image".
I am aware of at least two more guys with the same problem, so I'd like to know if there is more of us and if there is a fix (except downrgading to a really old chrome or an alternative browser, eg. LG stock browser does not have this issue).
Hi, you are not alone I faced this issue lg g4 recently following updates to the google chrome browser. It used to work fine but after the updates I have the exact same issue as you with the images. The way I fixed this is I go to google play store and go to the chrome browser. Click uninstall and it will remove all the updates. Following this I have also turned off auto updates for this app. Now I am using it fine with the stock version.
I didn't know it could be fixed. I'd prefer to have the latest Chrome browser though. I just download the image and then share through Quickpic or any other gallery app.

Yep instantly. Tested it four times and it works for all websites.
If you don't currently have quickpic, then download the version 4.5.2 apk as their latest has bloat and junk since they were bought by a company.
thx!
Still, too bad that there is no proper fix for newer Chrome. Now, when I want to just share some goofy pic in Viber, I have to download it, open QuickPic, share photo and then delete it... It's a drag!
Guys! Same for me. I download the file, but it seems that there is a problem when file is saved. I tap the notification and stock gallery/album app give me a black screen with an "!" mark. If i choose to download the file again, Chrome says the file already exist... random bug.
Doesn't bother me that much since I don't save a lot of pics from the Internet, but it's still a pain.
I have the same issue but with stock file manager i can see and share them...
