[q] phone might be bricked??? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was trying to install shfub's one-click FF02. My monitor went into sleep mode and when i awakened it my phone said that update encountered an issue. Please help!!!

Try again and see what it says.

my phone don't want to connect to the pc. so i can't retry flashing it.

Install the drivers and ODIN on another computer and see if you can Odin back to EL29 or EL26

Had this happen once and scared the <censored> out of me because I thought I was screwed - this was before we knew what was causing the bricks. Unplugged from USB, restarted PC, left phone in d/l mode and then plugged in *after* starting the one click package. (It didn't like doing before for some reason) Turns out it was the last step that did the trick.

i was going to try your method but the phone's battery died so it won't go into dl mod now.

Will it charge if plugged in? Or if not do you know someone who would be willing to swap batteries?

i swap my vibrant battery but the trick isn't working. i restarted my pc, left it in dl mode, plugged in usb after starting odin 1 click.

Is it giving any msgs on ODIN oc or not even showing up?
If not showing up, are there any unknown devices in Device Manager?

odin is giving a no read message (succeed 0/failed1). the device is unkown. i've installed the drivers again and again, but device still not recognized. really stomped..

Little late to this but did you try a brand new USB cable? If you can get into download mode you should be able to resolve your issue using the above recommendations - re-install samsung drivers to pc, reboot pc then start Odin, then get phone into download mode before plugging in. Also try and charging the battery for at least a short time 30 mins or so. I have seen bad cables cause SO MANY problems. Don't assume that the cable you have been using is good get another one.

i will try what you suggested.

I was having same issue but I was coming from ics to gb to do a restore of ics rom. Well it didn't go well, so I had to odin. My Odin wouldn't find my phone and no matter what I thought I tried didn't work. I moved it to a differne t USB port and it worked. This may help it may not but it is worth a try.

Usually, a different port/cable does the trick, esle uninstal the drivers, reboot and install the drivers. That should get it done.

tried switching ports and cables but still unrecognized. it shows com on odin but half way thru install it shuts down saying device not recognized.

Can you copy all of the log in Odin OC and paste here? Just wondering if we're missing something, the phone is obviously connected.
The other thing I could suggest is download and try a different package and see if it behaves differently.

You might need to use traditional Odin with all of the good stuff checked.

[Q] Help with Odin

I am trying to flash epic back to stock rom, but when i run odin and plug in the phone in download mode it keeps on saying it's been added and then removed repeatedly. Any help?
Windows says this?
You put the phone in download mode, start Odin and then connect the phone to the PC.
I'd check to be sure you're using the usb cable that came with your epic. Using others can have mixed results, even though they fit.
Check the connection to the phone; be sure nothing is in the connector.
Try a different usb on your PC.
Can always try to reboot the PC as well.
Good luck
Now it works, but when i select the 528 pit, it's stuck on Setup Connection, but if i use the 512 pit it just says it failed.
Going to second the try a different usb port, although if you have any other micro-usb cords that have thicker cables than the samsung one, use that for flashing.
Also may want to reset computer after you have it fail. It seems to mess with something in windows or leave a process open that keeps it from working right
Also gonna ask a dumb question, you do have a stock epic rom that you're trying to flash along with the pit and you are clicking repartition in odin right?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I was on the DK28 rom before but now since 2.2 has been released officially i want to flash to stock and then get the official version. The problem is everytime i run it, it's on the SetupConnection part but it never gets past that. no i didnt repartition it.
The only suggestion I can offer other then the usual stuff (check connections, USB ports, drivers, etc) is to redownload everything. It's possible that the download could have been corrupted for whatever reason. It's happened to me once when I was trying to Odin back to stock.
Hope this helps.
So now i got it to run, but the phone it self booted into a green screen, and in the list in Odin it's stuck on modem

Stuck in the middle of flashing the latest CWM in Odin..

I had orginally flashed the earlier version of CWM through Odin. I had no problems doing so..
No I am trying to flash Bubby's latest CWM the same way however Odin didn't reboot my phone and I don't feel like the process is complete. I then closed Odin and tried this again, no go.. I disconnected my phone via USB and tried again and Odin is pretty much no doing anything...
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0) is what Odin says to me..
Now.. I don't doubt that maybe my phone is done.
However I do have the reboot checked off and I'm used to odin performing the reboot for me.
Any one else have experience with this?
Was it a tar
yeah, not a zip lol.
Okay, so I'm a heavy dose of stupid and brave and I really can't contain myself when it comes to my phone..
So I rebooted.. Pulled the battery and all is well.
However it didn't flasht he latest version of clockworkmod, Bubby's.
So what went wrong? Why didn't odin full finish the flash or hell start it for that matter. I'm a little worried about that.
I am no the most knowledgeable guy but I do read instructions 20 times before attempting something... Anyone have any suggestions? I've read where people may of downloaded a bad file? huh? Does that really happen and if so is it really that common? That surely is a cause for concern.
Yes it does happen prob more then you woul think. However sounds like a usb driver related issue is it sayig device connected in odin? If not id suggest firt use a diff usb cable try all your usb ports some may be underpowerd. A thicker usb cable would be better if still no go uninstall the isb driver restart computer re install driver then try all your ports and a diff cable
Try a different machine as well

Odin not working.

Can anybody help me out really quick? I was trying to go to the latest MIUI from CM7 and of course whatever happened happened, now I have to ODIN back However, I'm trying to use ODIN3 v1.30 GT-P1000, victory_8G_100528.pit, Deodexed-Rooted-CWM-Busybox-EH06.tar, but the computer won't discover my phone while it's in download mode.
YES, I HAVE DRIVERS INSTALLED!
Hope you got about 5 cable, cuz that's what I go through everytime. Also I go to 2 computers and about 10 usb ports, then something will work.
What do you mean 5 cable? Man this used to be a breeze, I used to use my moms Windows and it was so simple, but her laptop decided to totally die out on me, so now I can't do anything.
Use the Odin3 v.1.85 .zip file in this thread, it will work.

Alright, is there any alternative I can use instead of ODIN? Because I've used 2 wires, and 3 USB Ports, reinstalled drivers, and nothings working.
You could try hemindal, or how ever you spell that. The odin alternative. It's in the development section somewhere.

make sure you're not using a pit with that file you're flashing, too, i don't think u need it with that specific file. try your old cables this way first before u try another cable, and try the usb ports on the back of your computer. and one more thing, i'm pretty sure heimdall is just for apple.

maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers on your laptop, and try a new cord, the one that came with the epic was notoriously crappy.
edit: redownload them from sammy, just to be sure...
If you can get into a recovery you can try installin srf 1.2 and do a proper shutdown. This has usually fixed this issue for me

Odin will only recognize your phone on 1 port, usually the first port you used that installed the drivers. Try every port. If you want to try Heimdall go into Development at the top in the stickies in the thread about How to fix a semi-bricked Epic. Post 2 is all about how to use Heimdall.

Ummm I think I know what your going through if I remember one of the cm7 builds my pc wouldn't recognize my phone either. I have a thick black berry cable and it always works and detects except for. That situation you need to pull sd card plug into sd adapter to plug into pc put a flashable of some rom since your on rfs I would say try the newest cm7 even if it doesn't boot maybe it will bring back your usb to pc connectivity. Since your on rfs don't flash srf1.2 cuz your phone won't boot you would have to do srf1.1

Try dialing ##8778# and putting the phone on pda or modem under the USB section.. I don't remember what one worked for me, I think it was modem. But mess with those settings. Hope it helps.
Sent from my old but still kickin Epic 4g
Whenever I have a problem it is always the cable, the port or the computer itself. I just try varying combinations until I get it to pick it up, if it is just the initial recognition I don't see how it can be anything else
I've had my system USB drivers corrupt before. Try getting drive sweeper and look up how to do a reinstall of those drivers (not the samsung drivers).
I tried odin3 v1.85 -worked for me, where earlier Odin v1.3 would not recognize the phone (Epic) while in download mode.
Can you get to CWM with 3-finger boot? May be easier to go that route...
Other thing I've run into when Odin doesn't want to work is you need reboots after each stage like this:
Uninstall drivers
Reboot
Install drivers
Reboot
Open Odin and then connect phone in download mode.
If I skip the reboots, many times it won't recognize phone.

[Q] USB/Computer connection issue

Hello XDA!
I don't want to post a wall of text (not that tall of a wall, at least), so, I'll try to get to the point quickly. And yes, I have done a lot of searching, both on XDA and Google, and that will be proved soon enough with the solutions that I've tried so far.
The problem I'm currently experiencing is when I connect my phone to my computer, it charges but it isn't recognized. There is no USB notifications, no phone in My Computer, and no Windows pop up, whether it's a pop up asking me to install drivers or an unknown device has been connected, nothing. Mind you, everything has been working flawlessly, this just randomly, and I really do mean randomly, started happening. The phone has never been dropped and there is no water damage. I'm still using the USB cable that came with the phone. And, if it matters, I'm rooted, running the leaked LI8 JB ROM, stock kernel, and UVLEM baseband.
Here's a list of said solutions that I've tried so far:
Using a thin paint brush, wet the tip a little with alcohol and tried cleaning out the USB port
Connecting to a different computer, connecting with a different cable, connecting to any other USB ports on the computer
After making Nandroid backup: Data wipe/factory reset, flashing a different ROM
Remove Samsung USB drivers and reinstalling, also tried installing Samsung Kies
Uncheck USB debugging and restarting, checking USB debugging and restarting
Dialled *#7284#, select Modem, then reselect PDA, changing Qualcomm USB settings and changing it back to MTP + ADB
Turn off phone, remove battery for 30 sec, reinsert and boot up (soft reset to reset internal circuitry as described by a Samsung live chat service tech)
I might've left out a couple, but please do enlighten me of methods that you might know, I'll be sure to try it or let you know if it's already been attempted.
..also, when connected to my PC, under Settings > Battery, it shows "Charging (AC)" IIRC, this should be showing "Charging (USB)".
This next attempt stood out to me. I decided I would try and go back to the stock firmware, one where I would have to use Odin3. So, I put the phone in Download Mode, open up Odin3, connect the phone, and I get a pop up in Windows! It's trying to install drivers, and fails. I can't flash the stock Samsung firmware if I wanted to, even for warranty purposes. I do currently have the USB drivers installed, but my PC hasn't gone through the driver installation for when the phone is connected to the computer. So, I'm assuming that is why this is failing? I'm not entirely sure. But, when I saw this, I unplug the phone and plug it back in numerous times, to rule out that this might be a hardware problem. And, every time I plug it back in, it tries to install the drivers but fails. So, it's detecting my phone in Download Mode. I reboot and hope that it will detect normally, but no, it doesn't...
As a last resort, I went to Samsung.com and chatted with a service tech, he runs me through two procedures that I haven't done, the 'soft reset' and a 'master reset', which is done through Settings > Back up and Reset > Factory Data Reset. Neither worked, so, he then checks my IMEI and finds that I am still under the 1 year warranty and files a ticket for repair service. I asked him if there is a replacement warranty and he says that is done through my service provider (T-Mobile) with the Premium Handset Protection service, which I didn't add. Not because I didn't want to, but I can explain in later posts if someone is interested in why it wasn't added. So, now I have the return label in my inbox ready to be printed, taped onto a box containing my phone, and sent out. But, I can't go through with this because I have a custom ROM on the phone. There is no counter because I've already used Triangle Away, AFTER this started happening.
I am completely stumped... Any information is greatly appreciated!
EDIT: Also, I've disassembled the phone to check the MicroUSB port to see if any pins or prongs might've came loose. Everything is in tact.. I also wanted to see if the MicroUSB port was replaceable because I was able to find a spare MicroUSB ports on a website. But, it seems that the port isn't easily replaceable. It doesn't look removable, and I'm uncertain if it can be de-soldered to solder a replacement one on. Also, some thing caught my eye when I had it disassembled. There were two components of the phone that had SGH-I747 imprinted on them. I wasn't able to take pictures as I was in a rush to get it put back together, but thought it was of interest to bring up.
How do you have a custom ROM if you flashed the stock one? I'm confused..
Try installing drivers through the toolkit.
If windows recognized it in Download Mode, keep trying to unplug and replug the cable in the same and different ports until it installs?
This happened once on my Galaxy S 4G.
Uninstall all related drivers, kies, etc. Restart pc and download and install these drivers. (Should be latest)

Or download and install latest version of kies. Drivers included.
Try connecting again.

SAMSUNG epic 4g stuck on boot screen after trying to restore Stock Rom

I was running CM10 but I got a message whenever I got into the Camera App that said "Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped working", after a research in here I found that I wouldn't get that msg again if I installed this "gapps-jb-picasa-20121011-signed" thing.
I did, but when I got into my Camera App, I didn't have the other options like "Image Effects" and all that stuff.
So, what I did was to Restore my phone from my BackUp folder that I've created before installing CM10, but for my surprise I got a msg saying "VolumeError" or something like that and other things that I can't really remember... and as a good Mexican that I am, I ignored it and hit the Reboot System Now..
What happened next almost made me cry...
I was expecting to get in my stock rom without any problems and yadda yadda but... OH SURPRISE!
I got stuck on the boot screen, where it says "Samsung" and the website of it and I didn't freak out... I waited like 5-6 mins and took the battery out. When I turned again, I tried to get in Recovery Mode but the screen just kept turning off and on and saying the exact same thing, the "Samsung" logo and it's website.
I hope you can help me and please answer me. I don't know if I'm 1000000% screwed but I will only wait for the worst. Sorry for my bad english and don't hate me for being mexican
I don't know if I can get into my phone from my PC but whenever I plug my phone in, it just loads it as if it was in Charging Mode
PLEASE HELP ME!
I BEG YOU!

I solved this like 2 hrs after all this happened.

Greetings from México and thanks for all your support.
Here's a weird one for you,
Same thing as OP stated. Device is stuck on logo. Can't get into CWM. Was on People's Rom. Device was lagging really bad. Then the system requested superuser permissions. Yes the system requested. Being as I did not request it, I declined. Shut the device down to see if that would help with the extremely bad lag (i mean BAD lag. Like..........................ok it does something then.......................................................................ok it does something else. 10-20 seconds lag)
Connect device to computer to Odin back to Stock or whatever ROM would have worked, computer recognizes device..... wait for it.......
But in download mode Odin does not see it. Com Port will not illuminate. Tried 3 different cables. Tried 6 different USB ports on computer. Still nothing.
Any ideas, because I'm all out?!?
To the OP:
I would follow the instructions in this video from the part where qbking77 talks about putting the phone in download mode, as you presumably did when you first rooted your phone. Download all the files linked/referenced on the site, especially the Samsung mobile drivers, Odinv3 1.87, CWMRecovery, and the deOxed versions of the stock ROM. In sum:
1) get into recovery mode by holding onto the volume down, camera buttons, and then without letting either of those go, press and hold the power button.
if you get into recovery mode, skip to step 4
2) while your phone is completely off, hold onto the "1" button on the slide out keyboard first, then without letting the 1 button go, press and hold the power button until you're in download mode.
3) flash the version of Clockworkmod
4) once in recovery mode, wipe your phone, clear the cache, and dalvik cache, and then flash the deOxed version of the stock ROM

Yes. The drivers have been installed previously. The computer will see the device as "Samsung SPH-D700 Card USB Device". But Odin3 1.85 will not see it.
EDIT: When I put device into download mode and connect to computer, the computer only sees it as "Gadget Serial".

My phone is fully recovered and now I'm only SuperUser 'cause I don't want any CM by now.
Greetings from Mexico!
I'm using the same version of Odin I used to root the device. Would a different version really help and if so, what version to use?
I actually have a different version of Odin I used for another device and tried that one as well, with no luck.
EDIT: I have now downloaded and tried 4 different Odin programs with no avail. Again, that makes 6 Odin programs, 6 different USB ports, 3 different cables with the same exact results. The computer recognizes device but Odin will not.

Had a simular issue when I had two odins on the same computer, for a lark and as I had nothing better to do, tried installing drivers and one version of odin to a vertual machine running vista and checked to see if my computer's vertual machine would reconize and it did, I took it as a sine that at one point I had done something to my computer's main os sometime between rooting my epic 4g and frying it (recovering from a backup from a different parition layout I think, bad times with bootloops and seeing way to much of the samsung logo.) So as I'm not brave enough to run odin on vm I instead removed all of odin from my main os and all of the samsung drivers, then reinstalled rebooted and repluged my epic in, got reconition and reflashed with plesure.
The other issue might be that your computer is reconizing the device and try/failing/hanging and not allowing odin in. Had an issue when my computer was failing to pop up a 'what do I do with this' window and hanging round in the system. A reboot with the internet unpluged strangely solved that for some reason, might be the reboot might be the combo, but I find better connection reconition with my computer when I've fewer things connected.
Don't mind the spelling to much I clean up with my other device.

Phone does not boot past the "Samsung - www.samsung.com" logo. Plus, as with all of my devices, USB debugging is always checked.
Thanks for the suggestion though. Always helps to double check things.
I believe I am going to take it to Sprint tomorrow.
If I can't get into it, they should not be able to get into to it either. If they can't get into it, HELLO WARRANTY....
Perhaps before doing the whole getting found out thing with the return center, perhaps they do know what they're doing, try rolling this link past your eyes?

I know I've been in your boot problem situation and recovered, it just took persistence and eyenumbing amounts of reading.
Note On the multiple Odin, USB, and driver installation: if you've access to another computer it could be worth wile to run once though on a previously virgin computer, meaning your phone and computers' USB's have never touched. Just do the installation, rebooting, and plugging in exasperatingly meticulous order.

Yep tried the "virgin computer" computer as well. The computer sees the device but Odin does not. Com light will not illuminate.
Sounds grim.
So to rap up all the cables, plugs, computer, and software with odin is out of the debug process.
So I did some digging into the past and if your computer is reconizing and odin is not then ADB (android debug bridge) and the sdk are the other option

Ran across this and it might just be what you need. Its not quick but it has worked for me in the past.
The other thing that may work is ejecting the sd card and battery before doing anything. Though its likely something you've already tried.
