Hi everyone, I would like to know if we can come together to a conclusion of why the gallery app is so laggy! Its very striking that the gallery has serious problems while swiping through pictures or pitch to zoom, while in the Google+ app or the screenshots in the market the transitions are really smooth.
Any suggestion of why this is the case? Bad programming?
What gallery app are you guys using? I've tried quickpick but I don't like it either.
Gallery lag
I've noticed the lag too. The size of the photo doesn't matter. It lags even with small images.
I've found 3 more causes for lag:
1) The glow of the soft keys. If you have a custom rom and disable the glow of the buttons, the Home screen transitions when pressing a softkey will become smooth.
2) If you are in the Play Store and you are browsing an app with a long name (like PVSTAR+ (YouTube Music Player)) the scrolling would become stuttery.
3) System messages. If you get a system message (like "..." has been granted Superuser permission) everything would start to lag while the message lasts.
Those are really small things and I hope Google would fix them in a future update.

I'm really not a fan of the froyo/gingerbread 3D gallery, the effect is cool and all, but it's distracting and makes it annoying to use. On top of this, in CM7 the gallery seems to be giving me some battery drain due to the sensor usage for that 3D effect; yesterday the uptime for sensor usage on the gallery was 16 hours. Is there either a way to disable that 3D titling stuff, or a better replacement gallery? Now that I'm on CM7 the ONLY thing I miss about sense is the stock sense gallery, it was simple and streamlined. I don't suppose I could install the Sense gallery on my AOSP phone? Or some other gallery that isn't so flashy?
I use QuickPic & I completely removed Gallery 3D. You'll be surprised at how fast it is.
Perfect! Exactly what I needed. I will test drive it over the next few days, but already it's light years beyond that gallery3d application. Hopefully the various applications I use can recognize it as the gallery of choice with no problems, but I don't foresee any problems.
Thank you!!!
+1 on quickpic, only thing you cannot seem to set it as default for is if you are recording a video and then click the little thumbnail in the top right corner, works with camera though.
Eep... Just noticed that within Gallery3D also existed the picture frame widget, but I just downloaded from the market "Clickable Picture Frame" and it's higher quality than the stock android one. Also you can click on it to have it do something (open a contact, call a contact, text, email, etc). All is well in the evo universe today. I love this forum.
Quick pic is great...along with Hide It Pro LMFAO.

I'm planning to buy the Motorola DEFY. I was able to try out a demo piece for some time at a store .... It seems to have a vertical scrolling screen with icons as well as a set of horizontal scrolling home screens with icons. While the horizontal scrolling seems snappy, the vertical scrolling seems a bit laggy. As I install more apps, will the vertical scroll lag increase further. What's the point of having both those screens anyways ? Most phones just one horizontal scrolling ?
Horizontal is similar to your desktop. You put shortcut of apps or widgets based on your preferences. The vertical is the one where all apps are located. This is where you get the apps you want to put in the horizontal for easy access. lag can be reduced depending on the number of apps and settings

Hi!
The lag is, I believe, for the caching of icons. Because, once icons are cached (meaning you have been through all icons in the vertical main menu) try scrolling and it will be buttery smooth! Ofcourse, the more the apps, the more time it takes to get the icons cached, so more lag. But what I have noticed is that even though the main menu has been cached, the lag appears unpredictably. I suggest launching apps frm search since its faster.

As mentioned, the more apps you add, the slower it may get.
But maybe the android version (eclair, froyo, gingerbread?) on the phone you used wasn't too much up to date, or some laggy application was running, these could have affected the performance of the phone.
I use LauncherPro on my Defy (gingerbread CM7) and it has the option to hide (unused, unwanted) apps on the app drawer, which also increases speed.
hey all
i would just like to start a thread talking about the motion capabilities of our phone, commenting on them, and also thinking about new motion uses that may be able to be implemented into roms!
firstly, i love the motion features on the phone, i use the zooming very often in the gallery and browser. I never use the motion to switch icons from screen to screen, particularly because i only use 1 homescreen and i use ADW and i dont think it works with ADW.
one thing that bothers me is that the two finger motion zooming does not work when you are viewing images in the camera app, you HAVE to be in the gallery app. why when you click on the image icon in the camera app it brings you to a different viewer and not the gallery, is there anyway we can change this?
maybe it would be pretty cool to be able to switch pages in a program like Google Currents by quickly flicking the phone left or right from your wrist....any thoughts?
id like to see a feature like the incredible 2 has, that when your phone rings on a table, the volume of the ringer quiets as you lift it up. i would like this in addition to the flip mode, which is pretty friggin sweet too
what great ideas for motion features do all you have? and what do you think about the current useage of it?
*edit: added a video on youtube so you can better see it in action without having to read my ridiculously long and rambling explanation below. I tried clearing gallery app data, and that made the yellow tint appear more slowly, but didn't go away.
==========
I just started to get this weird somewhat random yellow tint in the google gallery app... it just started a few minutes ago. I've never had any problems with it before. I've had the phone for 4 weeks. This is just bizzarre!!! I've always used the stock gallery app to view photos and attach them to emails etc... no new apps installed today... however I was playing around with nova launcher and widgetsoid, but not really messing with system settings or anything...
Sometimes when swiping through photos is a gallery folder, they will all be yellowish, but when I swipe the first photo to the left (i.e. no photos to the left of the first, so you get the blue gradient telling you that you are at the end), the yellow tint will disappear.
When the list of thumbnail gallery folders are first loading, as the screen refreshes, the yellow tint is not there at first but then it appears... sometimes in different configurations... some folder thumbnails not yellowed, and others are, and some only have the folder name text yellowed.
Stock 4.0.2, rooted.
I have read some threads about yellow tints to the screen but this is completely different, it seems. As it selectively chooses content to be yellow...
Thumbnails attached... one photo in the normal and yellow screen version, and 3 screenshots of my gallery app main folder with far left normal, and then two different yellow versions of the screen...
also, swiping left and right in a gallery folder has different yellowing effects... swiping left (to scroll right) leaves the lower right corner folder un-yellowed, swiping right (to scroll left) leaves the lower left corner folder thumbnail un-yellowed... --- see attached photo comparison.. and these are screenshots not photos of the phone, so maybe that says something about what is going on maybe, that the screenshot captures the yellow tint..
Any ideas??? help!?!?!
I'd like to try and delete the gallery app and reinstall it, but not sure how best to go about that... it really seems like a software issue, and isolated to the gallery app.
PS: sorry if I broke any forum rules, but I posted a thread on phandroid too, to see if anyone there has any ideas too...
sorry to bump... I think this is an interesting and unique issue... anyone having something similar or ideas on how to approach solving?
- i've tried playing with developer and screen settings, deleting gallery app cache, killing all background processes, to no avail...
*watch the video to see the issue in action...
try a factory reset, if it still does it then it a bad phone and contact samsung
[solved] chainfire3d nightmode issue
So the color of the tint was 'amber'; this was my choice for chainfire3d nightmode, which was enabled and "on". However, nightmode seems to not work on the stock rom, except that it affects the gallery app in this way. I changed the nightmode color to blue and lo and behold... the gallery tinting was blue!!
So I turned off nightmode from within the chainfire3d app and the issue seems to be gone.
Nightmode must have been enable sometime between the last time I used the gallery and then to when I first noticed the tinting.
I'm considering uninstalling chainfire3d driver, at least until I get a custom rom... but you know what they say... if it aint broke dont fix it!
Hope this helps anyone else, if they start experiencing the issue...
Have the same issue on CM9 Alpha 0.5 on HP Touchpad.
CF.Lumen and Night Mode does not work. It just make some thumbnails red in the Gallery App...
...this was intended to go on the chainfire app thread...
Hey,
I replaced my iPhone SE with Huawei Nova 3 and I am experiencing a little bit laggy UI. Especially in third party apps like messenger and Instagram. When new message comes and I click on the messenger popup(circle which is always on top) then animations are shuttering and are a bit laggy. The same happens in Instagram apps when looking at the stories, then doing gesture to leave stories (slide down) and then u see these shuttering animations. Is anyone experiencing similar issues? Maybe it is android issue, but I am just not used to these kind of lags on iOS.
You will hardly see lags from iOS unless it's a badly coded app or it's run out of memory. I've experience this on the Nova 3i and I just replaced the launcher with Nova Launcher (fitting names) to reduce the lags. Especially when opening apps and transitions. Also disable any apps to launch on their own after a reboot helps sometimes.

It helped a little bit but still. Instagram just behaves weird, still the same problem occurs. I think android apps are just not yet optimized for this weird resolution, because when launching app for the first time, I see in ca half of the apps that they are somehow resizing themselves too match the required resolution (and that is also when some resizing/shuttering is encountered).

On my device there's an option to disable full screen per app. But on my device IG supports full screen. I do notice fb, fm, IG, flipboard lags when scrolling especially when there are posts with videos. And especially with videos that autoplay. I notice the same lags on my iPad pro 12.9" also. I always disable autoplay on the apps.
