Is auto brightness primarily controlled by the from itself or the me kernel? I ask this because I've flashed a few roms and the I'm currently settled on the codename android rc-2.0.
Love it but the auto brightness stinks. It seems to pop bright and pop dim at the most random of times. Maybe stock did this as well but since it gradually fades bright or dim its not very noticeable.
Currently on a Franco kernel variant milestone 3.08 that came with the rom. I even played with the auto brightness settings and values in the interface settings. But still get random changes in brightness that are annoying. Popping bright and popping low.
My question is how can I fix this? Any patches I'm overlooking? I've done a day of research and found hints of fixes but no links to them. Any one recommend a better kernel? Maybe just switch roms? Or just use the static brightness settings?

While using deck's (newest) rom the brightness is stuck at 100% and theres nothing I can do to change it. So thats the original problem.
To fix it I tired different kernels (tiamat, netarchy 4.3.4..., HTC's stock kernel) and I've tried my nandroids of older deck and sense roms.
When I go back to sense roms it boots at 100% brightness and then after the first time you turn the screen off it returns to the lowest possible brightness setting which is even more infuriating. This makes me think the problem isn't probably hardware and the searching i've done has pulled up "gingersense" brightness issues, but none of those fixes seem to fix it for me (namely HTC's stock kernel and netarchy)
Anyone have any ideas?
Also the light sensor works fine, so that's definitely not an issue.
Well if it's on "auto brightness" and it's just going from one extreme to another and you've tried different roms/kernels then it sounds like it is a hardware issue.
I wish it were that simple, all settings (auto and manual) on cm7/deck roms keeps backlight maxed with the kernels theyre provided with.
Only when I use sense rom's does the backlight decide to stay maxed for when it is first turned on, but the second it's put to sleep then woken back up it drops to the lowest backlight setting. (and thats what makes me think it's not just a hardware failure)
There is NO control over brightness at all, even on manual (stuck on high currently with deck's rom), I've gone back to deck since it will at least be usable now, but there has got to be something I'm missing.
Edit: Just to be clear, when I say lowest setting, the backlight is on, but dim, not completely off.
So this is the issue I'm having and I want to know if its just me or what. On stock jellybean for the Sprint Gnex. When using auto brightness and going into a bright lit room the screen brightness will raise. But when you leave the room it will not lower the screen brightness. It sticks at whatever brightness level is raised too until you lock the screen and then it resets. I have verified the light sensor is reading the lux levels and such. Is this happening on other people phones as well? And if so is there any known fixes for it.

This is happening to me as well. I am running Paranoid Android 2.0 at the moment. I was in bed, completely dark room, and turned the brightness to auto. It stayed at the full brightness setting until i locked and unlocked again.
It does for me.....but takes a few seconds

Did it work properly after that or will it still not dim when leaving a bright room until you lock and unlock.
I have tried holding my finger over the sensor for like a minute and it still wouldn't lower. I'm trying to find a reasonable fix for it. I've read adjusting the levels in the framework apk will fix it but I haven't gotten that to work yet.
Crazy part is. If you use an app to make your own custom levels it starts working. Same thing with cm10 if you use the built in options to set custom levels. But for whatever reason is doesn't want to work on stock for me.

OK. So this is wild and awesome at the same time. I flashes the newest version of rujellin last night. I left auto brightness enabled over night. Woke up today and its working. How crazy is that. As soon as I disabled and enabled it to see if it took. Stopped working again. It has to be in the phone or the code one. When I say code I mean Google code.

I haven't used stock JB, but CM10's auto brightness is great, especially all the advanced settings
It seems to be slowly starting to work. Its crazy. Makes me wonder if some info is getting left behind when I do a full restore to stock. Thanks for the info. I just want to know its not just me.

Edit. I was wrong. It wasn't working that was the screen dimming before it locked. After a some reading and searching xda it seems that this is the default behavior for the auto brightness feature on android. I'm not sure if this is correct or not but the ammount of people saying that versus saying otherwise is greater so Im going to have to agree.
Anyone else having this issue? Sometimes in well lit indoor environments, it will be dimmer than I expect and then suddenly ramp up to full brightness.
Likewise in dark environments it will be dim and ramp up suddenly as well.
Yeah, I have that aswell, sometimes it's not perfect at all, I hope there will be some optimizations.

Glad I am not alone. Hope they'll be good with software updates since currently they are known for not being good in that department.
I was really happy to see that option in settings. However I was irritated by how erratic it was. Disabled it.
Even ambient display doesn't work correctly for me everytime. It's kinda random too
To be honest, I think it's partly a Marshmallow issue, as none of my MM phones have had decent auto brightness

I wish I could agree. My Nexus 6 had great auto brightness on L and M. Never had this type of behavior until the OP3.
Might be because OnePlus has implemented their own content adaptive back light like on the OPO. I turned it off by setting a 0 in the file /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb0/cabc
Not sure if that file is there on the OP3 but it's worth a shot

I turned it off in the settings and it was fine. I just wish I could have normally functioning auto brightness lol.
I just got my OP3 and have an issue with adaptive brightness, not sure if this is a behaviour that others have seen or if I have a defective device, perhaps someone could advise? My phone is running 3.2.1 and is fully stock, I have adaptive brightness enabled as I always have on whatever phone I use, when I activate the screen or it turns on at the receipt of a notification the brightness is at the approximate level it should be according to the position of the brightness slider and is perfectly usable. After a few minutes, this varies a bit but never more than five minutes, the screen dims to what I think is the lowest brightness level which during the day makes it difficult to see anything on screen. I can get back the previous brightness setting by turning the screen off and then immediately back on but then after a further few minutes it will dim again. The phone is not responding to any change in the ambient lighting as this is always constant and there is no obstruction to the sensor on the front of the phone. I can get a constant brightness level by turning this setting off but it can be a pain having to manually adjust when I go outdoors for example and this isn't the way I like to use my phone. So, is this a hardware fault or just a very poor implementation of adaptive brightness? I'd appreciate any feedback as this is spoiling what is otherwise a great phone.
Thanks
What should we do for this scenario. Should we raise a complaint or wait for an update. I have my phone in warranty. I am sure all of us would have it in warranty.
I've had issues with that feature since day one with my op3. No update has fixed the adaptive brightness issue, and it's the same with all of the custom ROMs I've tried. Has to be an issue with the phone. I'm hoping a software update fixes it because it's an obvious issue. In dark light, my screen dims so much that I can't really read anything on my screen.
Auto brightness is just bad on the OP3.. I've installed Lux to ease some of the problems but I'd like the standard AB to work correctly and not need an additional app..
Can´t dim the brightness at all CM13
Hi,
I have an issue were I can´t dim the brightness at all!
Killing my eyes!
Any solution?
With last 3.5.2 is been solved
so i buy this phone for a very good price, so far all perfect, only little concern is that auto brightness maybe is not working nice
i set auto brightness on, and i reduce the brightness manual for about 1/4
but sometimes i notice that the brightness in screen is almost in max and it shouldn´t be
is this bug?
thank you
I'm rocking the build 9. and sometimes I'm having this issue. but, it's a minor bug i guess.
no one else with this problem? because some guy i know also have this issue
there is any good app that fix auto brightness
Yeah, auto-brightness in OP3 is far from perfect, but at least it's a lot better now than it was in early OOS versions.
You might want to try "Lux" to set your own behavior for auto-brightness, but bear in mind that it take some time for it to "learn" what brightness you want in specific situations. Ofc you'll have to do some manual adjustments during that time.

Anyone that has updated to the latest firmware, are you having issues with adaptive brightness? Mine is super sensitive! It's adjusting the brightness within seconds in the same lighting. Something isn't right every since updating mine. I had to turn the setting off.
Mine is a bit low during evening in the house...but at least it remains pretty steady.
Not having that issue.

Updated to .017 and I am still having an adaptive brightness issues being very sporadic jumping up and down when the light is dim.
December update and auto brightness is still ****ty. Worst in any phone I have used. This is so annoying. Maybe Google can just kang the files from Samsung

Can’t believe it’s not better. Thanks for the confirmation. Mine was not as bright as it needed to be but now it jumps like you described.
I just got my Pixel 6 Pro and so far the adaptive brightness has been really good
Mine was really wonky after updating. But after adjusting it a few times throughout the day, it has stabilized and auto-adjusts fine now.
