auto brightness not working good? 3.2.8 - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

so i buy this phone for a very good price, so far all perfect, only little concern is that auto brightness maybe is not working nice
i set auto brightness on, and i reduce the brightness manual for about 1/4
but sometimes i notice that the brightness in screen is almost in max and it shouldn´t be
is this bug?
thank you

I'm rocking the build 9. and sometimes I'm having this issue. but, it's a minor bug i guess.

no one else with this problem? because some guy i know also have this issue
there is any good app that fix auto brightness

Yeah, auto-brightness in OP3 is far from perfect, but at least it's a lot better now than it was in early OOS versions.
You might want to try "Lux" to set your own behavior for auto-brightness, but bear in mind that it take some time for it to "learn" what brightness you want in specific situations. Ofc you'll have to do some manual adjustments during that time.

Auto Screen Brightness Erratic

Anyone else having this issue? Sometimes in well lit indoor environments, it will be dimmer than I expect and then suddenly ramp up to full brightness.
Likewise in dark environments it will be dim and ramp up suddenly as well.
Yeah, I have that aswell, sometimes it's not perfect at all, I hope there will be some optimizations.

Glad I am not alone. Hope they'll be good with software updates since currently they are known for not being good in that department.
I was really happy to see that option in settings. However I was irritated by how erratic it was. Disabled it.
Even ambient display doesn't work correctly for me everytime. It's kinda random too
To be honest, I think it's partly a Marshmallow issue, as none of my MM phones have had decent auto brightness

I wish I could agree. My Nexus 6 had great auto brightness on L and M. Never had this type of behavior until the OP3.
Might be because OnePlus has implemented their own content adaptive back light like on the OPO. I turned it off by setting a 0 in the file /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb0/cabc
Not sure if that file is there on the OP3 but it's worth a shot

I turned it off in the settings and it was fine. I just wish I could have normally functioning auto brightness lol.
I just got my OP3 and have an issue with adaptive brightness, not sure if this is a behaviour that others have seen or if I have a defective device, perhaps someone could advise? My phone is running 3.2.1 and is fully stock, I have adaptive brightness enabled as I always have on whatever phone I use, when I activate the screen or it turns on at the receipt of a notification the brightness is at the approximate level it should be according to the position of the brightness slider and is perfectly usable. After a few minutes, this varies a bit but never more than five minutes, the screen dims to what I think is the lowest brightness level which during the day makes it difficult to see anything on screen. I can get back the previous brightness setting by turning the screen off and then immediately back on but then after a further few minutes it will dim again. The phone is not responding to any change in the ambient lighting as this is always constant and there is no obstruction to the sensor on the front of the phone. I can get a constant brightness level by turning this setting off but it can be a pain having to manually adjust when I go outdoors for example and this isn't the way I like to use my phone. So, is this a hardware fault or just a very poor implementation of adaptive brightness? I'd appreciate any feedback as this is spoiling what is otherwise a great phone.
Thanks
What should we do for this scenario. Should we raise a complaint or wait for an update. I have my phone in warranty. I am sure all of us would have it in warranty.
I've had issues with that feature since day one with my op3. No update has fixed the adaptive brightness issue, and it's the same with all of the custom ROMs I've tried. Has to be an issue with the phone. I'm hoping a software update fixes it because it's an obvious issue. In dark light, my screen dims so much that I can't really read anything on my screen.
Auto brightness is just bad on the OP3.. I've installed Lux to ease some of the problems but I'd like the standard AB to work correctly and not need an additional app..
Can´t dim the brightness at all CM13
Hi,
I have an issue were I can´t dim the brightness at all!
Killing my eyes!
Any solution?
With last 3.5.2 is been solved

Light sensor issue?

I was thoroughly unimpressed with the auto brightness on my unit so I kept it off. Every time I tried to use it, it would immediately drop to like 10% brightness in all but the brightest conditions. I consider the stock auto brightness unusable.
After getting tired of manually adjusting it all day I installed lux auto brightness on my phone and started fiddling with it.
It's better now but this isn't a permanent solution as the developer abandoned his app over a year ago. It's causing a few issues allready and apparently it's completely incompatible with Oreo.
While playing with the settings, I noticed that the lux readings were much lower than I expected. I was getting 20 lux in a brightly lit room, 50-75 lux facing the window, etc. Occasionally I would see it jump up to 20,000 lux in direct sunlight but then it would just dip back down to sub 200.
I obviously have some issues with my light sensor and am going to contact OnePlus to RMA my unit. I'm just curious how many more people are affected by this or if it's a fluke.
I also keep auto brightness off. Agree it's unusable, makes the screen very dark.
I thought it was just me. Auto brightness seems to favour the more dim side, it can get very annoying.
I hope when LOS/AOSP ROMs start showing up, they'll be able to fix this as it does seem like more of a software thing
I actually had the opposite issue where it would get way too bright in a dark room randomly. They really do need to tweak the software around this.
I just wish there was a good alternative to lux. I used to install it on all my phones and all my friends phones.
Nothing else available comes anywhere close to being as good as lux.
Using Lux and no issues as of yet tbh...
I use Velis auto brightness. Works well on 5T
Uninstalled lux as it broke face unlock and the camera. Both simply stopped working.
Trying velis now.

Aggressive Adaptive Brightness on OP5T

Hi,
My OP5T has a very aggressive brightness levels..
Whenever I increase the slider to 40%, it will revert back to 10%..
This was not happening earlier OP3...
Is this because of Nougat?
Are there anybody else who is experiencing the same problem...
Can it be improved
Thanks,
Shyam

I have terrible auto brightness too. Don't know the reason but it's not a hardware issue, thankfully.
I've been using velis auto brightness for a few days and I like it quite a bit. Getting 6 hours screen on time with a minimum brightness of 30%.
Using Lux here. The stock auto brightness is useless really.

Lux made my camera stop working, front and back. I wish the dev would come back and update his app. It's far and away the best auto brightness app there is AINEC.
Apparently the app itself will stop working alltogether on Oreo.

Ah okay, well still on Nougat and all is working great so not complaining :good: Switching to Oreo will have to wait a bit longer then

Thanks a lot, man. Velis is very helpful. Hope developers will fix this problem soon.

Brightness issue

I got a a70 today and I love it but one issue is very annoying. I like the brightness high(about 80%) and sometimes without a reason the brightness goes down even tho the slider is still at the same level. When the brightness goes down, if I move the slider 50 to 100 there's no difference the brightnes stays the same. After a while it comes back to the good level. It happens a lot when I'm using the phone and charging at the same time, I assume its because the phone is too hot but sometimes it's not that hot and it still happens. Any way to fix that ? The adaptive brightness is off !
When I got the issue, if I reboot the phone, the brightness is okay for the first few seconds and then it goes down so it is most likely a software issue, not a hardware issue.
Thanks for the help.
turn off the adaptive brightness
Make sure you have the latest firmware. There was am issue with brightness on the earlier releases, not sure if it was exactly what you're seeing or not but worth a shot.
Also, don't run the brightness soo high. It's a sure fire way to cause turn-in. I find less than 50 is more than enough unless I'm in direct light
Bug
It's a software bug. I'm on latest fw and brightness is still glitchy. January 2020 and still not fixed.

Question Adaptive brightness

Anyone that has updated to the latest firmware, are you having issues with adaptive brightness? Mine is super sensitive! It's adjusting the brightness within seconds in the same lighting. Something isn't right every since updating mine. I had to turn the setting off.
Mine is a bit low during evening in the house...but at least it remains pretty steady.
Not having that issue.

Can’t believe it’s not better. Thanks for the confirmation. Mine was not as bright as it needed to be but now it jumps like you described.
I just got my Pixel 6 Pro and so far the adaptive brightness has been really good
Mine was really wonky after updating. But after adjusting it a few times throughout the day, it has stabilized and auto-adjusts fine now.
