Bout time the HOX beats the S3 at something!

Interesting. I'm just waiting for the day you can drop a phone face down and it still doesn't crack. Gorilla Glass 5 or something, haha. Bottom line, they both will shatter if they hit the ground the right way. I cracked my Infuse screen because I was pushing a door open and it slipped out of my hand and dropped face first. Nothing really helps that.
It does bother me a little that the screen seems to protrude on the One X. It seems easier to hit an angle that would shatter the screen. Haven't had my hands on an S3 yet though.
I'm waiting for the day you can drop a phone face down and it smashes the pavement slab!
Poor phones, I wouldn't call it a victory.
It's more pure luck I ques HTC won.
All these stories about gorilla glass.. they aren't real gorilla after all, I'm talking about both phones.

If it's thinner and just as strong, then it's better.
There is actually a video comparison on YouTube somewhere and they demonstrate that the new glass is stronger. Have a look and you might find it.

I remember when I dropped my Desire HD from waist height. Down the stairs! It all happened in slow motion but I was just meh. If it had happened to my One X I would have been hysterically screaming like a girl all the way down the stairs!

Only a victory by a small margin. My old DHD would of suffered a lot less than these, that phone was a tank

There might be a luck factor to it but when you see a lot of droptest videos they do start to factor in, like with the iphone 4(s) you'd be hard pressed to find a video of it surviving even a slight drop. And I do try to be careful with my phone but all my smartphones have dropped at least a couple of times so I wouldn't buy an iphone 4 like phone

not really, dropped mine from waist height twice in the year that i had it (guess i'm somewhat clumsy), both times on a hard tile floor.
first time it landed somewhat sideways resulting in some body damage and the top right of the screen dying (but it made a full recovery over the next 2 days so it didn't bother me)
second time it landed screen down and the glass was shattered... phone still worked perfectly though
but after i got it back after being fixed through insurance slipped it in to a casemate tough which i dropped 3 more times from waist high (i'm really really clumsy >.<) but all 3 times it happily bounced off the ground with not even a scratch ^^.
tough phone but not indestructible
i'm fairly certain the HOX will fare better falling on the side, the back probably as well since the DHD had the same shape but the HOX is lighter, but screen wise i'd also say the HOX seems more fragile since the screen is sticking out a bit.
haven't dropped it yet, hopefully i'll be able to not drop this for a long time
I've dropped my old HTC Desire no less than 3 times or so from above waist level, the back cover and battery flew off the main body. However, my device was pretty much unscathed; not even a scratch! But I think the main reason is that I didn't drop it on a rough surface like a road or something. Even with that, I'd probably just suffer some cosmetic damage, pretty confident the device will still be operating. Because of that, I have the impression that HTC products are pretty tough.
Frankly speaking, now that I'm using S3, I don't have the same confidence that I will get away with a couple of scratches dropping it on any kind of surface.

Friday night...out drinking with the lads in London.
It was about 1am, me and my friend were talking. He wanted to have a quick look at my phone, so i passed it too him. Somehow...between me putting it into his hands and he grasping it. The phone slipped away....straight into a full pint of Stella.
We paused for about 3 seconds...just looking at it (we were quite drunk), I saw he screen go off so straight away i just sighed and thought ''he better buy me a new one''.
Anyway once i realised what'd happened, i grabbed the phone out of the glass (without spilling any beer), quickly took the battery, sim car and sd card out. places all components into pocket and continued the night...wasn't too bothered as my friend knew it was his fault and told me that if it didn't work, he'll get me a new one.
Hot back home a few hours later, remembered what'd happened...straight to the bathroom...got the hair dryer and started drying....5 minutes later...moment of truth.
WOHOO everything was fine.
I was kind of hoping it was broken, because i've already dropped it on the floor numerous amounts of times and it has a small crack in the screen bottom right.
But alas, everything was fine...
so....HTC Desire...is actually stella-proof as well.....They should stick that on the box!
Even after dropping it in a pint...the battery still hasn't improved though. Can't get a day out of the battery yet. needed to get a battery pack for the damn thing..
roll on Iphone 4 with that great looking battery life

I'm due an upgrade in August, so not too bothered about the Warranty. It should last until then. I don't expect any phone to last over 9 months these days.
All the stories I read about people dropping their phones on the ground and in drinks... I even know at least three people who've dropped their phones in the toilet.
I don't get it, even when I had a ****ty Nokia 5100 I don't think I even once dropped it!
Although I did drop-kick it across a garden once to test the shock-absorbent cover. Held up pretty well!
i treated my desire like royalty
i made extra sure never to drop it, scratch it, throw it etc
i put my phone in my pocket with my keys for literally half a minute and the screen is covered in scratches, unbelievable

Im scared ropping it on the floor as this big screen and build quality doesnt seems so good. Even in my full body silicone cases where only the screen is free. I even protected the keys lol.

What's the worst damage anyone here has done to there phone? I want to feel better about the dirty great scratch on top of my phone.
I dropped mine from a metre up onto a wooden floor and smashed the screen. £130 to fix it and they still havent returned it to me and thats nearly 2 weeks ago

I was thinking this!! LOL! dammed if I would be buying a mate a new phone after he was passing it to me drunk in a pub! I though only iPhone users got their phones out in pubs?
Desire has been in silicone case and screen protector since new... I kicked a Nokia down the road after it kept dropping calls... that was pretty much its life over... hundreds of bits. My Touch HD was key chipped but the paint was a problem on them.
congrats on getting the phone out the glass, without spilling any beer
I've dropped mine loads of times, got a nice scratch going down the centre of the screen due to keys in the pocket. lots of scratches on the paint work on the sides. a lovely big scuff on the back corner, a 10mm crack, bottom right side of screen.
And it wasn't my fault, he wanted to see it, took hold of it, i let go, he had it for a second, then it dropped in his pint.
The phones only £380, why wouldn't he have bought me a new one.

Wet Legend
My 15yo son managed to submerge his 3 week old Legend in a river - allegedly it was in his pal's backpack that was knocked into the water! He switched it on to see if it still worked before I had chance to dry it. Anyway it's part of my account and the phone is knacked luckily house contents covered it or he wasn't getting a new one.

Corning themselves stated that the Nexus doesnt use gorilla glass but that doesnt mean they havent used some other type thats just as strong and durable. The guy did mention in his twitter that he managed to scratch it with a google mug a bit later so I dont know how he managed to do that maybe he threw the mug at the phone coz it wouldnt go get him another coffee haha.
Im not even sure if that type of key test would scratch normal glass if it was only done for a few seconds. I guess I could take my keys to a piece of glass on the shed and see what happens lol.

Just an ordinary key (especially a well used one) are quite round and soft in the edges so no, it should be hard to scratch regular glass even, an unpainted ceramic coffey mug bottom on the other hand is allmost like a fine sandpaper so it would cause more scratching

ye, dragging a coffee mug across the screen would be a much better test, I've often thought the same about the use of keys in scratch test videos.
Keys is a good test imo, what else is a common contact to the phone? throw it in your pocket, what is usualy in there? i know i keep mine in my rear pocket all by itself, but still keys could become a common contct with a phone. When I empty my pockets I tend to stack them all in a pile, wallet usually end up ontop of the phone, but occasionaly I realize my phone on my desk with keys on top. Yes,I can see people setting their coffee on top of their phone like a coaster, caeless, but i'm sure it happens when you are busy at work.

I don't really think anyone would really ever put a mug on their phone in day to day use, but there are plenty of things worse than keys that your phone can get in contact with that would be more abrasive than a key, the mug example would be a good method to test the screens resilience to such things.

I like you thought the same after having the SGS and mine already has 2 scratches.
Rub a few grains of sand or salt on any display and report back.
I actually drove by the Corning main campus last weekend in New York. I was close to stopping by and questioning why they wouldn't make every effort possible to get their product into the Nexus.
Of course I realized they wouldn't answer my questions or be helpful...but still.
I'm not worried, anyway. I'm sure whatever manufacturer Samsung got for this phone did a fine job.
BULL****! My screen is scratched after 3 days of using it in the house and I have OCD with my phone! the worst thing i did was put it in my pocket and take it out.
I have had a galaxy S2 for over 6 month and not had a scratch :/ this one is quite deep

It's also a fingerprint magnet!
Okay here's the deal.. I currently have an HTC Desire, and I recently tried the SGSII.. My desire is a FREAKING TANK! I cant hurt it no matter what I do, including sending it flying across the room more times then I care to admit.. the glass has one tiny light scratch from when it spent a day in my pocket with my keys.. The SGSII on the other hand, I dropped it (rather gently) from my pocket the day I got it, and the case got a huge ugly gouge!
We've all seen the video of the guy taking his keys to the glass, which is what you should be able to do with any smartphone, but how does the actual case housing stand up? anyone got any stories of terrible incidents it survived unblemished?
I am hard on my phones.. I dont deny it, so I want something that will handle a beating and I'm kinda skeptical of Samsung after my experience with the SGSII.
P.S. my alternate is the Amaze
I too had a Desire and I have to say I am very pleased with the build quality of the GN. I can't say I've thrown my brand new phone across the room or even dropped it yet (I'm not the most accident prone) but it seems to be a sturdy piece of kit!

If you were unimpressed by the build quality/durability of the SGSII casing, not much is going to change with your feelings on the GN. Its built pretty much out of the same materials. You're best off sticking with an extra case if you get it.

Dropping it on carpet just proves that the screen/internals won't break from a hard fall. I think what OP is referring to in the case of his old SGSII is big gouges or scratches in the casing, which the GN will probably suffer from the same way.

Yes I was referring to actually dropping it.. Every other week my desire gets knocked off the living room table, or the like. I don't actively throw it or go out of my way to be rough, but we have an active house, And things happen. I guess I'll have to look into a very slim case, as I usually just toss it in my Jeans front pocket And go.

Sounds like BS to me. There had to be something in his pocket putting a lot of pressure on the glass. And he must wear some skin tight jeans for that to happen... or something bashed his phone.
I always put my phones in my jeans pocket. OG Droid, and Nexus S. Always keep that pocket empty but my phone.
Figures; just 2 nights after buying my GN, i managed to shatter the screen.
The sad part is I don't even remember it happening. WAY TOO MUCH GIN LAST NIGHT. Anyway, It looks like i dropped it face down, or tweaked the phone. Idk.
I took my case off so that it would be easier to get the phone in and out of my pocket. Bad move.
Has anyone else pulled a smooth move and done this as well yet? I have a feeling the screen of the GN is going to be easy to break.
I had a similar story with my Droid Charge. Don't remember explicitly what happened and then the next thing I know the screen was broken...
I bought the GN and got insurance this time. Expensive lesson to learn... =(
Samsung really f'ed up on this phone. It feels so incredibly fragile like i'd be worried to squeeze it too hard or it'll break or something... so much flimsy plastic crap. especially the battery cover, what the hell is that!?...

Do me a favor and squeeze your phone right now... there is no way your going to break it. And I personally enjoy the back. If they had used another back the phone would be thicker. As far as the screen is concerned, go with zagg.

GN seems pretty damn fragile at this point.
Being young, I've dropped many phones. My last phone, a BB Storm2 (I know, I know), just got dropped face down last week. Maximum result of damage? The corner of the screen chipped a tiny bit.
With how exposed the GN screen is, and even because it's curved...
Reiterating again, I will definitely be investing in cases for this phone. Anyone have experience with cases that come in and out of jeans pockets easily?
I would imagine if it was face down and pressed on it would easily crack.

I dropped it while hopping a wall earlier, not a scratch. It landed on the screen, but the contoured display worked.

Sorry, accidentally clicked thanks.
But what I was saying. I agree on the battery cover. As far as build quality, of the three phones I own (don't like selling them), the droid 1 feels like the most solidly built. It also feels the heaviest due to the keyboard. As far as the screen, it's glass. Glass breaks or shatters. If you want a screen that doesn't break, get a plastic screen or we could have thicker glass. I agree with the others on how it's dropped. I've dropped my Incredible a few times on pavement, even face down. The only thing that saved it was the lips on the case. The curved glass may contribute. Screen protectors will not really absorb the impact to prevent shattering or breakage.
Bulletproof glass on phones? Lol.
It doesn't feel much cheaper to me though I don't like the battery cover but it probably is related to being thinner than say HTC.
Damn!! I cry for you !! Good luck getting it repaired or replaced through samsung. I dropped my gnex waist down on a hardtop carpet, and surprisingly no scuffs or anything..
48 hours later, and I've got a chip in my glass! I had a ring thrown at me, I was sitting on a couch and my Nexus was face up on the couch itself but half covered by my shirt. The ring just happened to land on it and bounce off. Tiny chip, but I'm so frustrated with myself about it! I dropped my Desire a few times on concrete and all that happened was small dents, now the tiniest little ring knocks it and there you go. Annoyed that I didn't have it facing down, or in my pocket! I hate screen protectors, I prefer pouch cases so I can just put it in there as much as possible.
Going to go to the store I got it from tomorrow and hope to swap it for a brand new one... Wish me luck.

So let me get this straight.....you go get drunk, damage your phone, and don't even know what you did to damage it, and it's Samsung's fault because the phone seems fragile?! You don't even know what you did to it. For all you know, you might have pretended to be scoring a touchdown and spiked the phone down to the ground. I don't see how this has anything to do with the phone being fragile as much as it has to do with you not being able to care for your things.
So you got too drunk and broke your expensive new phone, what's the point of making a thread about it?
Try drinking less next weekend, when you lose control of your limbs and start breaking things that your body telling you something.

Given how exposed the screen is (which is a plus design wise) it needs to be tough to last most people's contract terms.
Think this is a response to someone doing the same think to a nokia lumia 900 to show how strong the screen on that was.
He's obviously ordered himself an S3 and taken One X bashing to another level!!!
Haha great video, I taught only the corners of the screen were Gorilla glass.
