Thanks kenny...you saying odin back to your fc09 rom (stock prerooted one). Backup sd card..reformat it...then reinstall TPR? Right ?

Odin the FC09 tar, include the PIT file which will automatically check the repartition box. Then odin cwm5 with autoreboot unchecked. When completed unplug cord, pop battery out and in, 3 finger to cwm5 and flash MTD TPR 2.2.
Also back up your sd card, reformat on PC and restore it.

My noobishness knows no bounds. I am new to flashing, just talked myself into rooting and flashing my Epig 4G. Everything worked perfectly (kennyglass123 thanks for your work!), got to CM9beta4, but I realized some of my data was missing. So, I tried to restore my NANDROID image containing the rooted FC09 via the CWM restore menu, but I started out with the same error lines that started this thread, and I cannot restore any of the backups, it says:
E:format_volume: format_rfs_device failed on /dev/block/st19
Error while formatting /system!
I was hoping the process you mentioned might fix something, however the only thing for which I used Odin was to put CWM 5.0.2.7 on it, then I used the recovery menu to install the pre-rooted FC09. I have no idea how to do what you just said, not do I know what a PIT file is. Please guide me!
Side note, I have seen people talking about the filenames having wrong information...my backup filenames show a time 4 hours before the actual time of the backup, but I haven't seen anyone be able to tell me if changing it does anything?

When you flashed CM9 it changed your partition table and file system. Plus TW backups (FC09) from cwm are incompatible with CM9. Reflash CM9 to rwstore your recovery and do not use ROM manager without setting it up manually to use the MTD CWM that comes with CM9 and do not change your recovery...it is built into the operating system

Hey all,
I am flashing a new ROM in CWM 5.0.2.7. When I tried to do a standard nandroid backup, CWM says: "Error while making a backup image of /system!"
I tried to fix permissions, which didn't work. There is 900mb free on SD.
What can I do to fix this? Flash a new CWM?
Thanks in advance!
That might work try this recovery its acs recovery5 just flsh this and reboot your recovery.

Any other suggestions?

You don't have enough space. Backups are over a 1 GB in space. Delete some old backups.
There not that big but cwm requires more than a gig of memory to preform it at least my backups are only like 700mbs total....if I remember correctly you need a minmum of 1 gig or more idk. If you need some space open the LOST.DIR folder and delete any of those #'d files like 820 2903 923 etc etc they are usless if you have any tha is.

Just try reflashing CWM 5.0.2.7. If you continue to get the error, backup your sd card and reformat then restore everything.
Try wiping cache/dalvik and then install it twice. See what happens. If that doesn't work, just do what kenny suggests.

No stock ei22 tar as of yet so ec05 is your point just odin back to it place the pit file in and check pda and place the ec05 tar there and have auto reboot checked only. Hit start and wait for it about 2-3 minutes usually if it hangs on one for like 5 mins its not going to go through...

No, you need to be in download mode. Phone off, hold the 1 key on keyboard then add pressing and holding the power button and it should go into download mode. Then you should be able to connect to computer with Odin running.

edit.... found solution, boot into CWR to make backup.....dont use rom manager. hope you didnt go all the way back to ec05 lol.

OK Guys, I'm really really stumped on this one and I hope someone can help out.
I'm running the latest SleeperROM on MTD/YAFFS2 and the TW.MTD SEPPUKU kernel. I was getting an error in CWM 5 that wouldn't let me make nandroid backups at all. I'd go to start backing up and this would appear:
SD Card space free: 7444MB
Backing up boot image...
Backing up recovery image...

Update: I went to the Mounts and Storage menu and tried a "mount /system"
It came back with "Error mounting /system!"
I'm gonna have to ODIN back to stock and re-do everything, aren't I?
Yes it sounds like it. I would also check repartition and use the PIT file.

What rom/recovery were you using when you tried to restore the backup? It sounds like you tried to restore from an ICS kernel.....broke your data partion and now nothing will flash.
If this is the case, you will need to flash one of the nodata tars from sfhub to return to stock and take it in to sprint for a replacement.
After that i get
E: Update logfile does not exist
Deleting Cryption Meta Data
#Manual Mode#
--Updating Application...
E: check_point2: /data/app is not directory
Installing apks.
Sucessfully updated application
Then it reboots and doesn't even make it to the boot animation. Just turns off.

Yeah, now you know for next time. You gotta flash a GB kernel with GB recovery before you can restore a GB backup, or else what you described in the OP will be the result.
Don't feel bad... LOTS of people, including a dev or two, have done the same thing with CM9 and ICS flashes.

I have been told not to use any ics kernel to do anything...backups, wiping , or flashing. Don't trust it ... People have bricked just by wiping with them . Sucks to not be able to back up and flash but for now that's what it is ... Be careful and cut down on apps and such so it doesn't take as long to set up ROM and flash away...

IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS... ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IS ON YOU!!!!
***please do NOT use this on any other sIII then the sprint one!!! only flash on sprint!!!!*****
this is a quick little flashable zip that will format cache, data, and system (in that order) i made because it is faster then having to wipe everything on it's own. so enjoy!!!
it can be found at the bottom as an attachment...
NOTE to other developers: *** if you wish to include this in your thread that is fine just please thank me. also please do not modify any part of it****
EDIT:
there is a fix out now!!!! the fix will format your internal sdcard but that is better then a brick....
i dont take credit for the fix or any of the files....
thank mkasick. adam_v1
this was posted by mkasick i just put it on the OP so people dont have to find it....
Keep using CWM-Recovery-LTE-SGS3-v4-adb.tar.md5, so reflash it if you flashed any other recovery.
Now, download make_ext4fs. Place it in the directory from which you're running adb commands. Then reboot into CWM and do:
Code:
adb push make_ext4fs /tmp/
adb shell
chmod 755 /tmp/make_ext4fs
/tmp/make_ext4fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p15
sync
Which will reformat the partition. It might take a little bit, but not much more than a few minutes.
If that works, reflash stock recovery, boot stock recovery, and select "wipe data/factory reset".

I then tried to redo from a backup everything goes well till the data and it says no data found...any ideas what might have happened?
I ended up with a brick using the exact same scripts the otherday. I woulnt recommend using these. Something gets jacked up on the data partition.

I have tried numerous things to recover and nothing has worked. I flashed roms, I flashed /data, I did an install script that restored the recovery logs, I flashed stock, I tried international .pit files (by the way, they wont even install on our phones. It checks for the proper device or something). Nothing has worked, so I deemed it a brick. It was fun to play with for a week though.
im sorry for everything that happened :`( i dont understand why this messes with /data, anyone else??? i was on the E4GT and this was the only thing that saved use from a brick! is there another eMMC bug????
Im not sure what it is. I havent looked into clockwork mod yet, hopefully I will get around to it this weekend. I want to compare what clockwork mod does when it wipes data, versus what the script does. My linux box is down right now though, so I wont be able to play much till I get that fixed.
I think we might have a chance if we could get our hands on the .pit file, or a .tar that includes the data.img, I was going to make one over the weekend, but when I booted my desktop, all that I had was memtest partitions bootable, so Im not sure what happened to my Ubuntu.

mine was too, when i couldn't mount data. i have now been able to mount it
all errors gonna but still cant boot
EDIT:anyway to get into adb without booting that far? (as you cant boot far enough for it to work)
EDIT the reason it is failing ( i believe this is part but there might be more, i hope not) is because /data has now become a read only file system
Hello,
Need some help. I am stuck at CWM and can't get out. I was trying to go to ICS , AOKP build 32, gapps, but not sure where I am now after I have tried various things to get the phone back into a working state. I have tried flashing odin back to gingerbread, and some other things and looking for any suggestions that might help. I get successfull msgs when odin/flashing most of the time, but still keeps coming back with these msgs:
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open/cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open/cache/recovery/last_log
I have also tried wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, as well as a restore.
Really need some help asap.
Thanks!

You're in brick city... AOKP 32 with recovery kernel wasn't "safe" yet, if that's what u had or if u tried flashing in "stock" kernel that came with it (wasn't meant to flash anything within that recovery) . You should have went back to el26 cwm prior to trying to go to any ICS builds.

Yup, now I went back to El26 using Odin but I cannot get it to work. So, is there anything I can do to fix it?

What do you mean by went back to el26 with Odin? Did it boot to recovery? Did you try to restore to full el29 using odin one click?

I've installed EL26_StockCWM.tar through Odin mode. So, now I'm trying to install any gingerbread ROM but it still can't wipe /data.

I told you. You're phone is bricked... Sorry but if you can't wipe data or when u do and get an error, it's because the emmc got messed up aka BRICK.
Sorry that you're bricked. Hope you get a replacement soon.
Edit: Here is where u made your mistake I'm guessing... If you were not on a GB based kernel with CWM prior to wiping data in cwm OR installing AOKP for that matter, then that is where it caused the issues.. That's why we were waiting on ICS source till we could get rid of the EMMC bug that was causing bricks.

I've been rooted since April and have been running CM10 since September, and suddenly my SD Card reader stops working. I unrooted myself by doing the ODIN back to stock method. The SD Card reader worked while I was unrooted, and when I tried rooting my phone, well it was really weird. In odin, the PDA file ended in tar instead of md5, which I wasn't sure if it would affect it or not. My phone installed CWM 5.0.2.7, but I couldn't install the deodexed prerooted rom. And according to root checker I'm not properly rooted. When I try installing any rom at all I get "E:/Can't install from /sdcard/(insert rom file here)...Installation aborted" Now what?
Ok I'm only bumping this because nobody replied. I really need some help please!

Should the file be called "cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g" or "cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar"? Because the video shows it end in tar, but my file doesn't. When I rename it, it's still a zip file.
Never mind, I figured it doesn't need to end in .tar because Odin adds it anyway. I still got the same error! This is what I did (my drivers are already installed):
1. Downloaded the ROM to my computer, transferred it to my phone
2. I turned off mass storage and turned off my phone
3. I put the CWM file in a separate folder, as well as the two Odin files
4. Opened Odin as Administrator
5. Unchecked auto reboot, as well as made sure everything was unchecked
6. Set the CWM PDA file
7. Connected my phone to the computer
8. Put my phone in Download Mode
9. When my phone appeared, I pressed start
10. It was successful, so I removed the battery and put it back in
11. CWM started successfully, I cleared my caches for good measure
12. When I installed the zip from SD Card, this is exactly what I get (I will convert to MTD later):
-- Installing: /sdcard/Deodexed-FC09-BML.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package... (Here it freezes, as well as the progress bar, for up to at most 20 seconds)
E:Can't open /sdcard/Deodexed-FC09-BML.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
Help me, what should I do?
Sounds like a bad download. Try to download or try The Peoples ROM from the development section.

That's what I thought, but every ROM I try to install gives me this problem
Have you tried to reformat your sd card? Can be done from the phone or your pc.

Hey man, it seems to me that your phone is already on MTD, since you say you were running CM10, and yet you are trying to push BML files through with Odin and flash them in CWM.
I would install CM10 again (by flashing the zip in CWM) and if that doesn't work then I would Odin back to FC09 and check 'repartition' in Odin while doing so.
I know you wrote that you had Odin'd back to stock already, but if you didn't repartition back to BML when doing so then that's probly what's wrong.

I did repartition to BML, but thanks anyway, turns out I did need to reformat my SD Card. Everything worked fine after that. Thanks for the help!

Lol. Leave it to me to type three paragraphs instead of just asking "did you repartition?"
