Camera black screen of death - HW Fault? - Desire General

I've got a HTC Desire which has been rooted and Im running Sandvold's ICS. I needed to reboot my phone the other day and after the reboot my camera shows a black screen of death. I first thought it might be a corrupted OS - I reinstall, restores a previous working backing, factory reset - none of them helped which leads me to believe its a hardware fault.
When I run the camera I get a black screen and sometimes a popup that says camera is not responding.
I download a flashlight app and the camera LED doesn't appear to work either - it also says flashlight is not responding.
I though replacing the camera module might do the trick but the flashlight is not part of the module? Anyone has any similar problems?

When you say black screen of death (widely known among windows OS users as KSOD), do you then mean a black screen followed by a system crash which is resolved by pulling out the battery or a black screen followed by system reboot?

try a non ICS rom... think camera is pretty unstable on ICS rom

Thanks - I'll try and go back to stock and see.
I just get a black screen - no OS crash. I can go back and everything is still working fine - no reboots.
Update: Ok - it must be a hardware problem.
I've gone back to CM7 - factory reset/new SD card. Still the same problem.
Update2: Ok - its fixed. Let hope this helps someone else. I opened the phone up and removed the top board and then saw one of the ribbon cables was loose (the one on the left) I reseated it and now camera and flash work perfectly again! Woo hoo!!

flexi cable loose connection to the lower board (the board with the SIM reader)
many thanks !
after disassembling the phone, the connector , the one on the left was not very well connected to the board, so i removed both boards, upper one with the camera and lower one with the sim card reader
plugging it back, and assembling everything made it all work
in my case, the following was not working:
camera
flash
mic jack
now it is all working perfect !!
to see how to disassemble it: check youtube desire disassemble

[Q] home button and lower left screen no longer works

I am running miui 12.11.1, stock kernel. My droid incredible as the AMOLED screen. My home button and the lower left part of the screen no longer respond to touch input. I have to rotate the screen to use parts of my screen now or I can't type in the "a" on the keyboards, or pull down the menu in landscape mode. I've wiped cache, and full wipe, but it has made no difference. I also cannot mount the internal sd card but that is a known issue with this rom I believe.
I've also tried going to a completely different rom CM 6.1 stable. but I have the same issue.
Ideas or assistance would be appreciated.
this sounds like a hardware issue and is most likely unrelated to ROM/kernel/recovery
Sounds like the digitizer screen. Same thing happened to me. Look on Ebay for a new one.
this happens with certian Dinc's. i bought a new screen to fix my home button issue because they are linked, i ended finding out it was a loose cable but according to HTC its a rare problem and was isolated to a few phones
eh. . that is ok. If it is a hardware issue than I'm just unluckly. I guess I just need to remember to rotate the screen left instead of right. Is there an easy way to map the home button to the search hard button?
I guess if it is really annoying I'll sell it to one of the devs here who could put it to good use.
Doubt its a hardware issue so test it before listening to anyone on here. I have miui as well and I have the same problem then I did a nand and flashed a new rom and it worked but I restored and the nand and the problem was back. I thought it was kernel but I flashed different ones but that isn't it...i flashed the zip for data throttling instead of editing it myself but I doubt that is the prob...so I have no cle right now I was just going to give up because now I don't even get any calls so make sure you test to rule out a hardware issue because I doubt it is bc I have the same issue and they keep getting worse until I flash a new rom. I'll try to figure it out. Ley me know on recent changes you made so that I can have some help trying to figure it out.
Well, Like I said, I wiped, factory, reset and flashed a completely different rom (went from MIUI to CM Stable) and one side of the screen was unresponsive. I turned off the phone to put in a battery and now I have all my buttons and everything seems to be working again.

I've heard of issues with extended batteries where the pressure distorts the screen so it doesn't work...
Could that've been the case?
I doubt it was the battery, I had the original battery in there when it was not working and I'm using the extended battery now and it is working, both batteries have identical physical dimensions. It may very well be a hardware issue, I noticed that when I was having problems, I could not mount my sdcard on my pc. The cable was plugged in, the phone asked if I wanted to sync with the PC but it never showed up in windows. I did it just now (running CM6) and it works. The usb cable/port is underneath the home button so maybe that port is just fragile and causing issues? I never liked the location of that port, it should be on top of the phone or underneath, away from screen as much as possible.

[Q] Camera/flash not working properly

Hello all. I have an issue with my HTC Desire (BravoC).
Any time I open up the default camera app or a camera app off of the market it just goes to a blank screen and if I try to press anything such as the menu button or trackpad key it causes a Force Close error.
Along with the camera, I can't get the Torch app or any flashlight apps to work either. However the flash will randomly go off so I know it does still function. I don't know if the two are related or two separate issues entirely.
I've tried reflashing:Factory Reset>Clear Cache> Cleak Dalvik Cache>New ROM and I've tried this with CM7, Ultimate Droid, and MIUI with out restoring any settings with Titanium.
I also tried reseating all of the connections to the (mother?) board because I had replaced a cracked screen previously and along with that taking the battery and SD card out for 30 secs.
I'm really fresh out of ideas as to what it might be. Anyone else have this issue or have any ideas what it could be or what I could try to?

Bump for this
I would very carefully check all ribbon cables to your camera hardware to make sure they are not torn. Even the slightest tear in the cable could cause any number of problems. I once switched out the casing on my Sony Ericsson W810 and at some point ripped the ribbon cable to the camera without realizing it. For some reason this caused the screen to no longer work even though the phone (a "dumbphone" (which could natively do email) mind you) would boot normally, making calls and such.

[Q] Galaxy mega touch screen not working

I received a phone that the lower part of the Digi was non responsive. So i ordered a new LCD/Digi part and installed it. After first installing the part the Digi was not functional at all on the new screen. So I figured that the part was just dysfunctional and i would send it back.
But I was curious and did some other tests. I put the old screen back on and it partially worked. Then without powering down the note 2 i switched the screens. Now the part i ordered worked perfectly! The home buttons even started working(they didn't work with the other screen).
So i think i have solved the problem, WRONG, i then took the battery out to insert sim car and finish closing up the device. When i put the battery back in to restart the old screen was back to malfunctioning. Also the home buttons stopped working.
Is this an internal problem or is it just a bad LCD/Digi?
Thanks

I thought so too. But then why does the other screen partially work? And if it is a RAM problem how would i go about fixing this issue?

[Q] Help! Phone boots and is recognized by computer but no image

Hello there
Im hoping that someone here can help me since im ready to seel the pho for spare parts... i've tried it all.
Heres the deal:
- The phone boots well and if i connect it through usb to the computer i can even access the folders and all.
- I can take photos (i her the sound of the shutter and all and see the piics taken in the folder when connected to the computer) and screnshots
- I managed to restore the phone back to original settings and even update software with sony official soft.
- Inicialy i bought the phone as faulty to try and fix it since the buyer informed me there was no water damage ( and i can confirm this because the "stickers" only show white). He informed that the phone just stoped showing image on screen.
- I thought it was a problem with the LCd so i bought a new one and replace it. The problem persists. Everything works but the screen.
Any toughts on this one? Could the motherboard be faulty in only one place (image, proximity sensor, etc)?
Thanks for you time
Regards

I have fully same faulty 2nd "spare parts" phone.
All works except screen, all as you described.
I checked, in my case problem definitely in screen because if connect main board to really working LCD panel = screen ok.
And vice versa: if connect normal main board to this probably faulty screen = black screen.
Maybe here broken flexible connector.
Also nothing interesting related to this case in service documents.

Moto G5 (XT1675) Broken screen replaced. Works fine only for 3 minutes.

I decided to repair my old Moto G5 who had a broken screen at the upper right corner.
When broken, it worked for few minutes and than the screen started to shrink and blink and and disappear.
Today i replaced the broken screen with the new one. Before proceding to remove the old one , i tested the new one by attaching it to the motherboard and it worked very well, no glitches, touch was good, had it tested for a couple of minutes, than removed the old one and placed the new one. Powered on the phone and it worked great. I was able to factory reset it, connect the wifi, test the screen, etc. but after 5 minutes it started with vertical stripes , disapperared and reappeared, flickering and dead.
I noticed that the motherboard was very hot when i removed the battery to shut it down.
When powered on again, it didn't show the screen, but the startup audio was working...
Thinking it wa an heating issue, i put it in the freezer (in a sealed container) and after 10 minutes, i turned it on... and it worked again, letting me test it for another 5 minutes before starting the issues again.
I disabled everything, no wifi, no bluetooth , no sim or sd. The issue happens also in bootloader mode by pressing power+vol- , works for some minutes, letting me brows the boot menu, but if i wait, the screen does the issues again.
Now i have to options :
1) Understand the issue and fix it
2) find someone in Antartica or Artic regions to use the phone at -25 celsius.
Thank You
A chip in your motherboard is malfunctioning. You gotta get it replaced. after 5 mins the problematic chip gets so hot it glitches your whole system. If you have a heat camera look over your motherboard while it is switched on. The culprit will shine like a christmas ball light. Then it's a matter of buying a replacement and replacing it.
If you don't have this type of camera, go to a repair center ( does not need to be official and tell them to check with their camera for the cooker).
