Sense 3.5 keyboard on sense 1.0 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a feeling that I'm asking a dumb question, but I never asked anything here before so cut me some slack. I was running the energy Rom for the last few months and I became accustomed to the keyboard that was built in. Not swype, but the HTC trace in the stock keyboard on that Rom. I finally decided to try a new Rom, swagged out sense, and I'm back to the sense 1.0 layout. It's been so long since I was on a stock-ish Rom that I forgot that the keyboard doesn't have trace built in. Is there a way to port that keyboard onto this Rom? I've done stupid amounts of Google searching so I wouldn't have to ask here, but of course, I couldn't find anything definitive. Sorry about this novel I have written for such a simple question, but I just want to be clear and have anyone who looks at this realize that I'm not being lazy and avoiding searching beforehand. Thanks in advance for the negative outcome here as I believe that I would've been able to find it if it was possible.

Try ripping the .apk from titanium backup or unzipping the ROM.
itll be under system/app
or find the keyboard and attempt to back it up via titanium backup

I unzipped the apk from the Rom and pushed it to the system/app folder, but then lost the keyboard until I rebooted. After reboot, it just kept FC'ing every 5 to 10 seconds. What I'm trying to find out is if there is an incompatibility with the sense 3.5 keyboard working on sense 1.0. Thanks for the response though!

Is there anybody who can give me a definitive answer on whether this is possible? I'm really hating typing without trace.

They're dependent on the frameworks from each Sense version, so I'm sorry, I don't believe it's possible.

Shucks, I thought that would be the case. Thanks for answering that for me. Any recommendations on a third party swype like keyboard that isn't swype? I don't like the native swype one because it sucks when using it to tap certain words and its predictions are usually way off.

I'd uninstall the native Swype and install the Swype Beta. It works better. Other than that, I don't really know if there are other "free" solutions.

I uninstalled swype and attempted to install swype beta but I keep getting an error message saying there is a problem parsing the package. I've seen in their forums that it could be the browser but I don't have the stock browser. Whatever, I'll fix it soon enough. Thanks for the suggestion though.

[Q] Question about Skyraider Athena

I have used SR Athena for a while and love the ROM. Thanks to the developer for such a trouble free ROM. My question is, (and i have searched for the answer the best i could have) is there any way to implement T9 touch input for texting and typing. I have used that for so long and find it easier. I have searched the market and alot of threads in this forum and cannot find a solution. thank you in advance for any help
Try this, I imagine it will work with Athena. Menu>Settings>Language&Keyboard>Touch Input>Keyboard Types> Select 'Phone Keypad', when your phone is vertical you'll have T9 and when you go landscape you'll have the full Qwerty. Hope this helps.
It doesn't give me an option for phone keypad with Athena, like it does with other roms. The only option it has is android keyboard
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Ok. I figured it out. I used the htc_ime download from the nexus one forum. T9 is installed and working like a charm. Hope this info might help any others looking for T9 when using Athena.

[Q] Swype not auto-spacing.

So I am a big user of Swype and really like the version on the Epic Touch, however, I have noticed an issue with auto-spacing and I am not sure if anyone else is having issues. Where I am seeing issues is spacing when I try and type single letters like "i" or "a" when typing a lot. On my older phone with swype this would auto-space and start the word. Is anyone else experiencing this, and does anyone know a fix for it?
Yea, this is a known issue with this swype version. u can try installing the swype beta version or the nexus s 4g swype and those will solve this problem. Im using the nexus s 4g swype atm and its working great, plus looks nice too.

I used TitaniumBackup to manually uninstall the stock Swype. Then went here to sign up for the Swype Beta:

I tried looking for the Nexus S4G Swype version too, but no luck. I'm liking the beta though. Very sleek. Hope this helps.
Yeah I had the beta version on my older Epic, and wasn't sure if I was going to put it on this phone looks like I will.

Click on Address no longer brings up MAPS

Used to be able to click on an address in text messages or in any browser and android would open it in MAPS or EARTH or NAVIGATION etc.
I recently installed AOKP milestone 6 for the first time, coming from Caulks 1.6. I'm not sure if it's an AOKP issue or if it's a 4.0.4 issue or what. I do know my buddy just lost this function on his G Nexus when he updated to Jelly Bean. That makes me think it's not a 4.0.4 issue because it worked normally for him on ICS. I definitely haven't taken any OTA updates so even if it was part of the Apple patent bullsh!t how would it be effecting me?
This is really important to me because I use this function multiple times a day.
Also, Maps takes forever to focus when I zoom in on a map. Any ideas on that?

Strings is just a way of using localized data contained to point to more data that it may contain. Its a SQL function, well, to me.
But I do not know if its a root or an app function within Android itself. Someone smarter than me may have that answer.
I'd try clearing cache and data for the particular app, removing, then reinstall. But it may be more severe of an issue if no app will work.
Did you recently flash a ROM?
: edit: Please disregard that obvious dumb question I ask at the end. Its been a long day..

I personally haven't used aokp, and I apologize for asking a question that you clearly answered in your op. Been a long day.
I'd check to see if anyone with your setup can recreate or maybe, possibly, you had a corrupted or failed partial file or a failed write during flash.

Ok just tested and it works in dolphin but not chrome. I just started using Chrome so that must not be a feature. As for sms I guess the it just doesn't work. I'll look into if I have a jelly bean sms app. I bet that's it.

I think you're on to something. There are multiple goecoder issues, random, with jelly bean on the the 'ol search. Multiple fixes if you're looking for a workaround.. NOT promoting a site, but stack overflow shows a few..
Open issues shows a few too.. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list Granted they are listed for the Nex..

And, to beat a dead horse deader, cause you touched on something I actually use, Andriod Chrome is using geocoding.. Odd that it isn't working for you. My maps in ICS have that function but it may still be broken in JB. Reference here.

I don't know about you, but I can type a lot faster the hole words with 2 fingers compared to swiping.
Thanks Guy's
I will download swype when i figure out to flash a custom recovery on this phone.
(Its soo hard) Compared to my other samsung phone
It's so confusing with all the drivers and stuff. I wish i could just use ODIN because that's 100% easier.
I've never used swype, I don't know what features it offers, apart from ummmmm, swyping(?) but I'm using this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cootek.smartinputv5&hl=en
Has the same type of thing, sliding your finger to write, and other features. I like it, find it good, but as i say I've never used swype, so can't compare. Sliding does take a bit of getting used to though...

you just have to practice. If you try and be super precise with Swype, you wind up losing a lot of time compared to just tapping everything out and letting the spell check handle it. Swype is certainly not perfect but I've been using it for about a year now and the only reason I go back to the aosp keyboard is the terminal, Swype acts weird on it...

Ok, how?
It would be personal preference if you ask me. I've tried all the ones that are offered on the Android store and still keep going back to Swype. The keyboard is great but the best feature that I find is that you can totally mess up a word and 9 times out of 10 Swype will pick the correct word or give you a choice of words with the word you were trying to type being 1st or in the first row of choices.
Installation is easy, just go to the website and follow there instructions, its a total walk through. :good:
Had Swype on my old Epic and my wife's LG Optimus S when she had it. Tried it again last night on my GNex and I can honestly say I like the stock keyboard better.
Like the previous poster stated......persoal preference.

I have used swype for a few months now, and i just cant use the normal keyboard again!!! Once when I was installing a custom ROM, i faced a problem with the installation of swype, and I just stopped msging or chatting with anyone that day!!
and I can even swype without even looking at the screen now!!
But in my opinion, u can't do the same on a normal keyboard coz u cant feel the keys!!

Swype is good at spell correct but Swiftkey does predictions better than anyone. So while you are swyping all your letters, I just type one or two and hit space
The select all, copy, paste short cut in Skype wins hands down!

+1 Swipping! I've been using it since the Windows Mobile 6 ages (HTC Touch Pro) and I can't use no other keyboard since then.
All about preference. I used to use swype beta, but have been using SwiftKey 3 for months and haven't looked back. That said, swiping is great, but I rarely type more than two letters before SwiftKey predicts my word.

[Q] 4.1.2 Keyboard versus Swiftkey question.

Now that we have received our new JB 4.1.2 update from T-Mobile (yeah! :victory, I have a question.
Samsung licensed Swiftkey technology for their keyboard. It does look much better and respond better than before. I also own Swiftkey. That said, I'm waffling between sticking with the stock keyboard and saving some memory versus running Swiftkey and having some additional options for customization.
What do you do?
Do whatever one you prefer, don't know why you want the answer given to you, just preference. Don't stop using apps just because memory more this phone has its memory

I stopped using SwiftKey because:
1) it was not remembering the words I told it to remember.
2) swipe prediction was terrible.
Using Swype now.
I prefer the note 2 keyboard myself because it has the numbers on top and I don't have to keep it that stupid little button on the side to make my numbers pop up.

Only SwiftKey can insert space bar by swiping over the space bar without letting go of your finger. I find that really hard to beat. I'll stick to SwiftKey until I find something that could do better.

Hi guys first post ever here in XDA. Been lurking for a while.
I have the Frosty JB 4.1.1 v11.2.1. I removed alot of apps through Titanium and when I do a factory reset, I don't have any keyboards. I am looking for the stock or note2 or the new 4.1.2 keyboard to install. I have swype but want to get stock so I can put it in the proper folder for factory resets so I wont be without a keyboard upon reboot. I have searched and all I keep finding is themed KB and cant get them to work. I hate the dev stopped producing the frosty rom, I love it on my phone. Cant find the v11.2.1 or I would just start fresh there.
Thanks in advance.

You can either "convert to System app" using TiBu Pro or move the .apk to the /system/app folder and reboot. Root is required for either.
And just fyi, there shouldn't be a link to the note2 kb in the themes and apps sticky.

Its all based on your preferences. I have used both and didn't think anything could be better than swiftkey till I saw the new Samsung keyboard on the s4 Note2 roms. I go back and forth now looking for a new king. I like the option of having the permanent numbers row on the ported note2 but I am also trying the new Kii keyboard on the play store. Install them all and swap back and ofrth in settings untill you decide which works best for you. I currently have 4 or 5 installed.
