Just ordered my unlocked Galaxy Nexus! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm pretty excited . Just ordered my galaxy nexus from the play store. I've been stuck using a droid x2 since last year on Verizon and I'm just so sick of it being so locked down. There is an alpha ics from out for it now but its buggy.
What's the first things I should do when I get it?

Send a text?

Insert SIM card would be my first action though.
Or even better, charge it for 6 hours then turn it on
First thing i'd do was to just plainly turn it on and use it stock unrooted unlocked.
Though bear in mind that if you want to root it later you have to unlock bootloader which will wipe your phone (yes pictures and all other stuff stored).

I assume you plan to activate it on another carrier? You mentioned that you're on Verizon, but it's not going to be possible to activate your new GN on Big Red.

Put in the battery.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

As pointed out above the GN from the Play store is the GSM version not the CDMA/LTE version. So if you are planning to stay with verizon you will need to return it and get the right phone. If you are planning to go with a different carrier then awesome, I would suggest playing with it stock at least for a little bit.

Here is the info for getting it set up on a GSM carrier http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
I was on Verizon for 9 years myself and decided to dump them since they really don't offer anything different for me, from what I am getting on StraighTalk Att. My biggest mistake was not dumping carriers years ago.

When I said , what should I do first I was referring more towards the rooting/unlocking . I am aware this new galaxy nexus is an unlocked GSM phone. I am dumping Verizon and going the Straight Talk route . I have run a Straight Talk sim in my old Atrix with just some apn mods. I'm guessing my phone should work without any apn changes since its fully unlocked and the sim I ordered from ST is an At&t sim. Should have the new gn weds or Thurs.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA

Congrats on dumping Verizon. They are just the worst IMO. They really ruin the Android experience will all there medalling with the phones. I can see why Google doesn't particularly like them.
You are going to have to change your APN settings on your Galaxy Nexus to get the ST sim to work. There are instructions on their website.

first thing would be....root that beast and experiment with it! its a nexus so

Download mskips tool kit and root it. Then using the same tool kit install touch recovery. After that slap on Romans aokp rom. Use the lean kernel found on rootz. I get better battery life on that kernel.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I actually already downloaded and installed the 7.0ToolKit on my laptop. I'm ready for when my Galaxy Nexus gets here. My Straight Talk SIM, case and screen protectors will all be here waiting for me when I get home from work on Thursday. I see me dragging ass at work on Friday.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA

So, how do you like it so far?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

i would rather get S3 than this phone.

I just ordered one today too. Price is right to be off contract, I dont want to be stuck in a contract ever again. SG3 will be too pricey for me off contract so this will hold over for some time.

There are too many thread like this, but its nice to see anyway.
I recommend using a ruler to measure how curved the screen is which isn't so much like the previous Nexus S, but still cool.
After that, unlock the bootloader, install cwm, install AOKP rom and Franco kernel. Just make sure you're flashing the Verizon roms.

Touch it

Loving my Galaxy Nexus. Unlocked, rooted , cwm touch and I'm running aokp and Franco kernel. Its a big step up from my droid x2 when I had Verizon.

Welcome to the club.
I had it for a week. My thoughts.
After a year with HTC Sense (Thunderbolt), I'm finally back to vanilla android, since I'm a former Nexus One owner. Atleast this should get speedy OS updates (even if there's a slight delay compared the to GSM version).
ICS is good. As you install more and more apps, and have them running in the background, it might get laggy, but thats expected.
HOWEVER, since this has the 720p display, the text, especially in the notification bar, looks much smaller (compared to my T-Bolt), especially the '4G' icon or the clock. Not a biggie for me, but the 720p display makes the text and images look much crisper.
If you do use custom roms, i suggest you keep the radio that was installed on the phone out of the box, since i tried the 4.0.4 radios and had some signal issues with it. Went back to 4.0.2 radios, and no problems since.
I have only one thing left waiting from Samsung, a proper 3-pin car dock and a hdmi desk dock.
Unlock bootloader right as you get it. This way if you decide to root and flash custom roms then you can do it without losing any app data because you'll be able to back it up using titanium backup.

I'm coming from the bionic.
First thing I love ICS and chrome just love it. Shape and feel is so nice.
I bought a battery extender(1mm larger then the regular battery) horrible got 4 hours. I miss my bionic because of how well it connected to the network.
Nexus G has a horrible time connecting I hope they fix it just like they did the bionic. It is a bit laggy but that's a soft issue for sure Google will fix it.
It seams like its slow on purpose (my opinion)
All and all only way I'll go back to the bionic is if they dont figure out the connection issues.
Hope I helped.

I'm coming from sprint but got tired of their horrible service and I'm hoping Verizon will live up to their name and provide better service..any app recommendations or tips on how to maximize my enjoyment with the nexus?? If your going to root it do so before anything else as unlocking the boot loader deletes everything. That's my only suggestion. Welcome to Verizon I'm loving my cell provider and my phone.

I agree with this. What I will add is that you should just unlock your bootloader right away. Even if you had no intention of doing so, it would save you a lot of headache if you happen to change your mind. For warranty purposes, locking the bootloader is just as easy as unlocking it.

No. You unlock the bootloader so if the OP does decide to root, he can just root without losing his app data and then he can use Titanium Backup to backup/restore his data without losing everything because "fastboot oem unlock" will wipe all.
Good try at trolling for calling us "nerds" though.
I remember when I was this excited for mine to arrive in the mail. Its the best feeling ever when you see the fed ex truck roll up.
Make sure you unlock first things first so you won't lose your data if you do ever decide to root or anything and trust me you will eventually.
Also are tons of apps and mods for you to download when you get it. Volume+ is definitely one you need because of the weak stock speaker. Also, for the guy who is getting the unlocked GSM version you don't have to root to use wifi tether ... it will work right out of the box. If you guys have any questions just pm me and I'll do my best to help.

Once you unlock the bootloader, it resets your phone. That's why its best to unlock it from the moment you receive it because you won't have any personal files, pics, settings, etc.

How to use it properly:
1. rip it out of the box as fast as possible.
2. Take out the battery, and the usb cable.
3. Put the battery in the phone (this will take 5 minutes)
4. Fastboot oem unlock

Confused :S Galaxy s 3 or note?

Just heard news that tmobile announce galaxy note as we expected earlier . Dont know detail specs yet but for sure its goona be kickass device to own.

Galaxy s 3 or Note ?

Specs have been confirmed and they're exactly like the att note. Hardware wise the s3 out guns the note. But I too find myself asking myself the same thing lol
I've decided to just wait till the end of the year to see what happens. Note 2 and galaxy nexus 2 are suppose to come out. But who knows.

Note2 just around the corner
Forget about the Note, the Note2 is coming out at the end of Augest or early Sept. Why in the hell Tmobile is even bothering with this is beyond me. My guess would be that their so far down the dev cycle with their crap "tmobile apps" that they are just going to move forward and not listen to anyone. There was a poll out a few weeks ago that asked the question
Why do you root your phone
1) To install Custom Roms
2) To remove carrier bloatware
3) both
The results were something like 83% I think for number 2. This shows in the ratings for all of the Tmobile forced bloatware apps in the
play store. With comments like how do I remove this, I don't want this on my phone and I don't even use this why are you making me update it.
etc.
If Tmobile would LISTEN and not install bloatware and make those apps up to the user with links to them in the play store they would have less
bricked phones and warranty issues. Less customer churn and more than anything else they would be able to deploy new phones alot faster.
Its a shame to cause they say they listen to their users but its apparent thats not the case.
They screwed us on the S3 with the dual core deal. From what I heard they were offered the Korean S3 but passed since it was more money and its deployment cycle date was later than the dual core so they felt they would have missed the boat. They also charge more and made it hell of confusing for those wanting to buy it. Like its 329 plus rebate and then $20 payment a month for x months. I mean who comes up with that crap!!! Now their bringing an almost year old phone to market "as new". It really makes zero since. I mean how are people going to feel when they sign a contract for 2 years only to hear the NEW Note2 is coming out weeks later. Samsung will be doing their big promo's and such for the Note2 and you will be holding your what you thought was a new phone in you hand going wtf I just bought this!!! I think its going to cause a fare amount of confusion and could cause some backlash. No one wants to feel taken "Taken" but this is going to cause at least some ill will. The only saving grace is the Note2 will take a month or two to get here state side but still. Every chance Tmobile has had to really stand out from the rest and offer really great phones that are better than what is out there yet they keep dropping the ball. Makes me seriously want to take the new CEO position and really turn the company around cause it doesn't look like anyone with vision is driving the bus.

This is a paradox that will always be there. In November when you get your Nexus, you will want to hold off until April for the S3-Plus or whatever is on the verge of coming out then.
I agree...however if this was a question for a gs2 user I would tell them neither! The s2 rooted with the right rom and kernel is as good if not better than anything out right now. In my opinion, if you're even reading any of these forums and interested in flashing roms and personalization you should move to a nexus device. They get all the newest and coolest stuff first cause that's what Google uses to develop on. So SAVE YOUR MONEY until another bad ass nexus is on the market. It will probably be expensive so everyone do yourself a favor and start saving!

Still rocking my S2, and waiting till my upgrade in December. We'll see what's out then. Nothing worth leaving my S2 for, and Nexus isn't worth leaving T-Mobile for, so. Honestly, I would get the Note, but only because I love big screens, and I work from my phone and my tablet all day.
problem is the note is just a bigger version of your S2 not the note2. It's last year's model from att with a stamp that says T-Mobile and their new "app pack" which is nothing more than you can download for free from the playstore. It's getting upgraded to ICE but I would bet that's as far as it goes due to hardware.

exactly, it's not like verizons going to bring anything groundbreaking out with the official 4.2.1 release, so really, who cares? i feel bad for the people who aren't into messing with their gnexs being stuck on 4.1.1 because verizons being a bunch of douches. as far as i'm concerned, i'm keeping this phone till it dies, and i might even buy another gnex after this one, as long as development is still rolling with it.
About two weeks ago I got mine replaced by verizon due to my phone having charging issues. I went into the store, didn't call before hand.
I had flashed back to stock before i went in. Told the girl there that it wasnt charging right and i have multiple batteries and they all do the same. she went to look up on some database if others were reporting similar issues (there were none). after giving her my phone number and 5 minutes later she said a replacement is on the way and to mail my old one back in the same box (shipping was paid for)
I was very pleased by how quick and painless it all was. She never touched or looked at my phone at all and asked hardly any questions. my phone also had a chip in the screen (about 2 cm at the bottom right, no cracks though)
the replacement phone had a sticker saying "like new" replacement but it was absolutely pristine. absolutely 100% perfect cosmetically and works great as ever (screen colors seemed better than my original one imo).
As with my luck with CNL devices, I've had nothing but problems with them from Verizon,GNex included. Hope you got a good one.

Lets hope that we can take other carriers versions and flash them to T-Mobile since they're all the same... Why? Because I'm not paying 640 bucks for a phone. Sprint phones almost always end up on eBay much cheaper than retail.
If you have a GS3 there isn't really much of a point of upgrading to the GS4... I'd wait for the 3Q and 4Q devices to drop. This beast still has plenty of oomph in it...

Why? (asking legitimate question)
I thought the S3 and Nexus 4 were pretty much the same spec wise?
I had an LG phone before and had a terrible experience... And LG doesn't give a crap about customers with problems. In fact they (lg) went out of the way to erase Facebook complaints comments, etc... I seriously doubt I'd buy another LG device.

I've seen the s4 in person since I work in a store and the Samsung rep brought it to us and it is a beautiful phone. The screen on it rivals that of my 42" Samsung TV as far as quality of picture. For anyone not already on an s3, it is a wonderful upgrade but I Dont see the point in going from s3 to s4 especially with s3 rooted on 4.2.2

I, too, have heard rumors about the Xperia line coming to T-Mobile and I am quite interested.
As for the Nexus 4, don't do it... The build quality is terrible... Just go play with one at a store... And as was said, LG makes terrible devices. The G2x was the biggest fail of a device I've seen in a long time - which really sucked given its potential. A lot of people really hate the Nexus 4. If you DO get one, make sure you get a super case for it.
I had an LG Optimus 3D. Suffered from Ghost calls and Ghost text. People would call, the line would ring on their side but the phone wouldn't make a peep. Same for text, they would send, but they would never get delivered to the phone. LG swept it under the rug. Erased the Facebook comments complaints. And to my knowledge never acknowledged the flaw or offered a solution. It's well documented in the lg forums right here on XDA.
After that I said I wouldn't buy another LG if I could avoid it. (never say Never... LOL)

Then yes you can use a old phone

You'll have to go back to a normal sim and then back to micro with the new phone if I'm right.. Maybe there's an adapter?

not sure how that is going to work since you just got the S3. i know they are doing new pricing plans, but i just got my daughter the iphone5 but since i was not up for a full upgrade i paid $200 down, but only pay $12 a month for it instead of $99 and $20 like advertised. you may have to lay out a lot of money to get the S4 now. it shows $149 down and $20 a month, but that is usually for new customers or those of us who have a full upgrade available
i could be wrong though
I dont see a point in upgrading from s3 to s4. but from s3 to note 3 that should be worth it. Well who knows the wife just got the new HT C ONE and its a good phone in my opinion but I had bad experience with the Amaze before. I think that if you are interested in roms Samsung is the way to go with. with its unlock bootloader out of the box and easy to dev with. When HTC you have to wait for S-OFF etc
Release for online just got pushed back to April 29th.
Smh!
Might as well wait till May 1st and get it at a store instead of dealing with shipping.
