[Q] Nexus and Video Call over GSM - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
I just sold my SGS II and plan in near future to get a Nexus, most likely because I believe stock Android is less bloated than touchwiz'ed ROM and because of the zero shutter lag camera.
But a friend told me, Nexus cannot do video call over GSM (I may be using the wrong term, but what I want to address is, video call over paid line without using internet).
Is it true?
Since I can do video call on my SGT 7+ and SGS II.
For now I just use my 7+ tablet as my phone, luckily it fit my jeans.. but look terrible wheneve I make call w/out speaker/bluetooth Lol.

It seems that there is no way for the Galaxy Nexus to natively video call which means you'll have to Skype or GTalk or some other apps to video call.
There is also a previous thread regarding this topic found here.

Just use Google hangouts

there are certain area where Internect connection pretty bad here so that's why I need over GSM
since my wife want to talk with our kid so video call is a good choice.
tried with several apps (tango, ym video call, gtalk) and they're seem lagging, so not really comfortable.

There's no native 3G video call on the Galaxy Nexus.

Thanks for all replies

You have several options Skype, Hangouts, Tango etc.

I guess video call over gsm could work in the place where internet connection is bad, yes?
So that is why I think it is an important feature.
Wondering what stops the phone to use this feature since afaik it has front camera like sgs ii

Maybe I'm wrong but Android has never had native video call support. What you had on the SGSII was probably a TouchWiz addition?

Touchwiz (Galaxy S and SII) have that functionality, AOSP have never supported GSM Videocall.

You're wrong, Stock ROM in SGS has Video Calling over GSM aka 1G and it works since I have used it in the past. No data connection is required.

skype not working

Anyone was able to video chat with skype? It states the program supports GSII, but no option for video available.
THanks.
Mike
It works in mine, I'm using a hacked version tho, the name of the app is Skype_2.1.0.46_v11, look it up in the known places
I'm using the official Skype from the market. You have you to enable video chat under settings.
It works fairly well. I hope this helps.
yea but i hate this skype app really buggy they need to add epic touch support

It works on mine. Did you enable video calling in the skype settings?
It won't let me select the "enable video calling" option on skype. It is just greyed out. How did you guys select it?
EDIT: Had to restart the phone and the option came up. It works amazing man. People say the camera quality from my side looks awesome.
I go to download Skype from the market and it tells me my device isn't compatible, both on my phone and from my laptop.
I'm sitting 3 feet from a coworker that's Skype chatting with a friend on her E4GT. Did they change something?
I was able to enable it but can't do video.

call recording, need some quick help! (legal problems) Promptness appreciated!

hey guys, sorry if these seems rushed...
Going through some legal issues at the moment and I need to know what I can do to get call recording up and going asap?
Does our phone support it? (yes by far to my knowledge)
if so does it need to be on speakerphone or is it incoming outgoing recording?
also is there a specific rom I should look at for the best functionality of call recording?
I had just been debating swapping to CM10 (not sure if it supports it or not)
But I may not be able to do that...
I get no service at my house, I need to use wifi calling or else go outside where i get reception.
Does call recording work over wifi?
Gah so many questions
Thanks Guys & Gals!!!!
I think for call recording apps like skvalexs Call Recorder need to be supported by the kernel. I don't know if stock kernel will support it but if you find his thread here on xda you can download the current release as a trial to see if it works.
There are a few roms which have call recording built in. No real options for it but its there and it works. They'll all be ics based I'm pretty sure. FreeGS3, XquiziT, wanam Lite, I think all have this built in.
I'm not sure how well it'd work on wifi calling, but I don't see any reason it would be any different.

If you can get them to call thru a Google Voice phone number, you can call record with Google Voice by hitting the "4" button during the call.
call recording is built right into GS3 rom default phone app & maybe someother roms here that i may not know of

Incall can record and store as a mp3 so easy to play on other devices as evidence. Do pre testing as with anything before your actual conversations, Incall only worked on speaker phone for me and I dont know about wifi calling. You might need to use different recording apps for different situations.
CallRecorder (10$) from skvalex + AlsaMixer + aosp + ktkernel work 100% perfect.
If you change rom, you need to fresh install CallRecorder + AlsaMixer every time. If you restore from Titanium Backup it will not work.

There is no call recording feature in any of the CM/AOKP/AOSP roms.
Also there are no call recording apps at the google playstore which work properly with cm/aokp/aosp roms.
If you flash the stock Samsung Galaxy Jellybean 4.1.1 rom or any custom rom based on Samsung Jellybean 4.1.1
you can find many call recorder free apps at the playstore which will work.
MP3 InCall Recorder and Voice works amazingly well on AOSP ROMs. Try it out!

Pretty certain it's illegal in most areas, right? That's probably why.
I don't think it's illegal in most areas, perhaps just some. If I'm not mistaken Samsung left it disabled in TW because the laws are different everywhere you go.
In the US, I believe it's legal in most areas so long as at least one party involved is aware it's being recorded. (Meaning its illegal to 'bug' someone's phone, but perfectly legal to record your own conversations). There will be slight variances from state to state of course.
Oh, and it goes without saying that this does not apply to the NSA, DHS, FBI, etc. They can do whatever they want!

This. Two-way recording is legal in the US if you tell the parties on the line that you are recording the call, then if they don't want to be recorded the recording is no longer admissible. One way is legal, but has a lot of caveats. All of these legal quandaries is most likely why it does not work with AOSP-based ROMs.

Looking for a good call recorder

Hi Guys,
I have N7100 running the latest Slim Bean ROM (AOSP)

Can anyone point me to some kind of patch or an App that will record all my calls?

It must be the shady ROM you're using, that is the culprit. On stock ROM, loads of recorders work great.
What REALLY sux, is the fact that it's impossible to record both ends, when you're using a BT headset.
I've tried every possible setup, with every recording app around, I'm rooted, enabled recording in ROM.
Nothing helps. Is this 2013 or is it 1995? Even the good doctor Ketan stands speechless! Grrrrrr.....
A nice recording app is the "Call Recorder" Link An even better one for our phones is "Total Recall" Link
doesnt work.

This really do sucks, but i'm using Slim Bean and not shady..
I used to have Alliance ROM and recording indeed was great, but the ROM became too slow after a while, so I decided to move to AOSP.
now everything works flawlessly including high DPI and lockscreen camera app, but the call recording is not working with none of the apps in the market. Incl. the ones you stated.
any other suggestions?
Thanks!

You're joking, right?
I have tested Sanity as well, but to no avail.
Are you using stock ROM, & latest 4.1.2 build?
In case you REALLY got it to record both ends

Just make sure you change the "audio source" setting from "microphone" to "phone call" and it should work. It's been working on every Stock ROM I've ever used including 4.1.2.

Well, I have now tested once again, and as expected, it only records the far side of the conversation.
I wonder what could possibly differ between our settings? You're, in fact, the only user ever, to report

Unless you're using a BT headset. Then the record button is greyed out.
I've come to the conclusion that this simple task is impossible to achieve.
User "Tubgirl" claims that it works on her phone. I really don't know. If you
google the problem, you'll find that no one else have managed to get it right.
I'm prepared to give up on this one....
I could be mistaken, but I think in-phone recording (that doesn't involve speakerphone) is not possible, at least on the ROM's I've tried.

Video calling is probably the most overhyped feature of UMTS and I guess that prices almost triple of standard voice calls with resolutions in the hundredths of megapixel never helped...

Apart from what teddytsen said, the currently installed OS doesn't matter (as long as you're not switching from 2.x to 4.x or backwards)!
