I'm an experienced ROM flasher and I've been using CM9 on my OG Epic 4g since the first beta. My question is for my wife's new Epic 4G Touch. We upgraded her from a Nexus S 4G and she really liked the stock ICS on that. (Got a great deal on the upgrade with Best Buy's Buy Back program! After all was said and done, we got the GSII plus insurance for free plus an $85 gift card!)
I would like to flash CM9 on her GSII. Will it be enough like her old Nexus S to make her feel comfortable? TW is driving her a bit nuts.
Thanks in advance!
Jason
You could go with cm9 alpha 4 and use kobridges tweaks for great battery life
I would flash calks 1.6 with the Kobridge tweaks. just throw nova launcher on there and it will be more than enough speed and battery,
They just released a pre-alpha for cm9 5, so you could also wait for a more stable version of 5 to come out if you're set on CM
CM9 is plenty stable enough for daily use. Since you're experienced, you can upgrade her CM9 anytime a new major build or the final comes out.
Yes she would feel very comfortable. But I'd advise her to update the ROM as new builds are made, even though there are a few minor bugs to none left. I've only experienced one bug and it's when the 3g icon goes white and no data can be retrieved. The work around is to toggle airplane mode on and off. But I myself use an app that automatically detects this and fixed the problem. So you can say I am bug free but keep in mind, not everyone experiences that bug.
Btw CM9 is the most stable AOSP ROM here so good choice. Flash the pre-alpha 5 version as it is the latest and make sure you've updated to the latest ICS modem or whichever ICS modem you want. Latest is preferred lol (FE22)

Cyanogenmod 9 is very stable there is and alpha 5 pre1 I flashed the fe16 kernel after the gapps and I get extreamly great battery life.
There is no touchwiz or any of that Samsung/Sprint bloatware and it has a nice stock android experience.
go for it... nuff said!
Although I'd say it is stable, I don't think battery life is up to par with GB roms. Keep that in mind if battery life is going to be a major point for this person.
I'd say either CM9, ParanoidAndroid, or MIUI...
Maybe you'll just have to flash a few rooms and see which one she likes the most. MIUI makes the UI very simple like an iPhone kinda... there are many themes available for it. CM9 is just a modified/tweaked AOSP rom, it has your basic Android UI which you can also theme using the baked in theme chooser. ParanoidAndroid is based off of CM9 with it's own tweaks/modifications baked into the system, it has app specific screen density settings which allows you to run an app as if your phone was a tablet. It is mainly a power user rom but with some use is very easy to configure.
Like I said you might want to see what she would like to run on this beast of a phone... maybe before you know it she'll be a power user and start teaching you a few tips and tricks lol. Hope this helps even if it is just a little bit. Cheers

Thanks for everyone's feedback. I'm going to give CM9 a shot. I'll make sure to get a good nandroid backup just in case. And thanks for the reminder about Nova Launcher, afinch1992. I run it on my phone and agree it would be a good choice for her.

Brick would be bad. I'd never hear the end of that. Thanks for the link. My first step will be following QBKing77's root video to try to root, install CWM and do a nandroid without losing data. Also going to use MyBackup before I try to root.

Yeah definitely follow a guide. Its not normal par for the course at the moment with the whole EMMC firmware bug frying storage when Erase_All is called. Aka dont format or erase (or in my opinion use) CWM once on cm9 or any ICS based rom until source is released and the devs can easily fix it.

Really your results may vary from others expierence so with that taken into account try Legendary 2.2. I used that for a while and was able to squeeze out around 18+ hours in low signal areas. I don't know if the gps is alright but there is a fix and its not a flashable it has to do with permissions. Also you can add the newest samurai kernel with that. Since your on an old rom I'm sure you have no clue about the mtd and bml partitions available so be cautions on what you download and flash. If your on bml make sure the kernel is as well.
Another suggestion is try cm7 with the samurai kernel. If 4g isn't a deal breaker.

I personally reccommend Clean GB MTD. Its super stable for me and doesn't inlcude to much extra stuff that pulls from you battery. I like something simple and functional so this was my pick. Also if you decide to use it make sure to read about MTD first in android development because it functions quite differently.

I changed from Bonsia to CleanGB MTD over a week ago & REALLY like this new rom.
Much faster & smoother. My vote is for CleanGB MTD......
Do a little reading first though.....
Ok, like the OP, I have been running Bonsai 4.0 from day 1. (I guess it works so well, we never look for upgrade? or maybe the 4.1 brick fiasco scared us off, lol)
Epic 4g flashed to cricket, rooted, CWM 3.0, ext4, goLauncher. fairly happy, but could use some more speed and battery, plus new toys are FUN. So....
Let's have it out. Here's what my research has turned up:
Bonsai 4.1.3 (stable, but froyo based)
vs
Sprint's new OTA GB update (don't really wanna unroot unless there's something amazing about this, plus as a cricket customer, can I even get this update?)
vs
Legendary
vs
CleanGB
vs
SleeperROM
I've heard a bit in this thread about SleeperVSCleanGB, but I'd like more comparisons, and to hear about any other candidates/factors we should be considering (Xtreme? will I lose ext4 by switching to MTD? should I care?)
thx a bunch for your time!
Yes you will lose ext4 by switching to mtd... but you gain yaffs2 which is much more stable than ext4... so no worries there... and I have tried every ei22 rom out and the best bml imo is legendary and the best mtd is viper rom or cleangb mtd.... being a cricket user you probably won't get the ota because sprint is who pushes it out... also if your using bonsais recovery you will need to flash cwm 5.0.2.7 (officially supported for our phones) before trying to upgrade to a custom ei22 rom... you won't lose root by going to any of the custom roms cuz root is already in the roms as you probably know... and imo ei22 is way better than froyo... only problem with ei22 was the gps (I never had any problems but most did) but all of the custom ei22 roms have the gps fix built in... happy flashing!

Personally my favorites are cm7 and miui.us, though I haven't tried any ei22 based roms.

Im on MIUI at the moment, but I've tried quite a few. You can read as many posts about how a certain ROM works. But, you won't really know what suits you and your phone until you try them out!
BTW- I Like MIUI a lot, except for how fast my batteries die(i carry a backup).
I go through both in LESS than 12 hours, easy! Then again, the problem may be with my phone or the charger i'm using, so don't let me discourage you.
I suggest CM7 but I'm bias as I assist with the development.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427645
Really the best thing to do is try all of them and see what you like best each phone reacts differently with different ROM. Many people report CM7 being the best battery wise but others have terrible results.
GPS wise most roms share the same GPS fixes so you shouldn't notice a difference between individual roms.
Cool, thx for the feedback. I will check out Viper, MIUI, and CM7 (been eyeing cyanogenmod for a while, but I thought they hadn't ported for Epic 4G yet?)
Also glad my fear of leaving ext4 is gone....by bye BML, hello MTD!
Now, if we can just get that ICS ported.....

I'm fairly new to android but went ahead and unlocked and stuff to install stock 4.0.2 ahead of my phone receiving the update. I'm growing frustrated with some lag and things here and there so I think its time I install a custom rom. I'm currently running stock 4.0.2 unlocked GSM version (yakju). Yep. The AOKP ROM is about as flawless as it gets. Even full stable CM7 ROMs on my previous phones were not as good as this. And the way Romanbb designed the settings toggles within the notification drop down is absolutely perfect, IMO.

I'm currently using bigxie's rom and its really good - smooth and with great added features.
I might try the AOKP one though as it does seem to be favoured by quite a few people !
Its easy to flash the new roms so why not just flash one, try for a day , then flash another ? Everyone has their personal likes/dislikes anyway.......
The only way to truely know is to try them all yourself but for me after doing that I am stuck with AOKP and APEX kernel. Great match.
Only thing stopping me from using AOKP is the pink unicorn - NO THANKS!!
bigxie's ROM does it for me personally, but ultimately you have to try them for yourself.

Again, for those of you happy using AOKP: I am trying to figure out whether to jump to the GNex yet. I am on an old HTC Incredible, but frankly, it gets the job done and I get better than 24 hours battery life yet. I remember the bad old days when my batt life sucked & I was always flashing new SW to make my phone work, and I don't feel like going back to that. I will be on the Verizon CDMA / LTE version. If I flash AOKP + Franco:
1. Will most of my apps run smoothly / not FCing all the time?
2. Will I be able to get 12-14 hours of light usage from the phone?
Not looking for guarantees, just your personal opinion if you're running this setup.
Thx in advance!

1) The only thing I ever got a FC on was when I was using LauncherPro Calendar widget. Now that I'm using the Nova launcher I don't remember seeing a force close.
2) 12-14 hours should be easily doable. With my current config I'm at ~ 79% in almost 6hrs with 1h10m screen on time.
AOKP definitely at the moment, smooth, more features than any thing else ive tried. Combined with Nova launcher there aint much it can't do.
Load a new boot image though LOL.
Definitely AOKP. I don't know about smoothness (I thought the Gnex was smooth already) but I absolutely love the added control. To be honest though, it was the notification toggles that got me (and admittedly cause me to root). The unicorn was a surprise, but a quick bootanimation flash was all that was necessary.
Curious about the franco kernel...
Why does everyone rag on the Unicorn ? Cause it's pink ?
I'm going to be flashing an SGS2 for someone I know and I was wondering what a good setup as far as ROM, kernel, recovery, radio is for stability and features.
They upgraded from a LG G2x running CM7.2 Nightlies so they have basic experience with custom ROMs, but they don't know all that extreme technical crap.
I'm thinking about Juggernaut because it has a lot of good tweaks and features or maybe CM7 since they aren't many thing on the non-working list.
Please reply with any helpful suggestions, I'm considering flashing an ICS ROM but I'm not sure if it would be stable enough for daily use.
Thanks
The ICS ROMs are suitable as DDs, so take your pick! Choose any of the T-Mo Leaks!
As of now, the kernels that come with the ICS ROMs are as is, so no worries there.
For Gingerbread, if you choose the Darkside ROM, it has a special kernel, made directly for the ROM, but you can still swap out for a different kernel.
With CM7, you can only use the kernel that's meant for it.
All other Gingerbread ROMs are customizable as you see fit.
I hope that helps!
Whatever ROM you choose, you can always ask more questions in its Thread!
I'd say
Dark side
Beast mod
Juggernaut
Not in any specific order
I'd lay off the ics unless your buddy is gonna update it often

I think I'll go with one of those modified ICS leaks and stay away from the AOSP until it goes into RC quality.
Mostly from CM7 he liked the custom gestures, audio tweaks and such. He really just wants good battery to last a while and has zero tolerance for lag so V6 will come in good use. I'm a port dev so I'll be able to throw in the beats libs and dsp manager.
How is the battery stats on the ICS leak?

For ICS use [ROM][ICS] :ARKSIDE.EVOLUTION.2:: [BETA2 [UVLC8][WiFi CALLING][5.06.2012]. I run it as my every day ROM and its nothing short of amazing. But the issue is he wants better than stock battery life and AOSP delivers the exact opposite of that. But I'll see what he wants between all this tomorrow. For most novice users that I flash roms for its about finding a perfect balance between performance, stability, and features. So in simple terms: Noobs always want everything to be perfect and don't understand the concept of how difficult debugging roms is.

Personally. I wouldn't flash any ICS ROM's just yet. There are a few apps that I use daily that doesn't work with any of the leaked bases.
The GB ROM's that I liked were Darkside, Revenge of Macnut, Juggernaut, and Tuesday.

OK,
They want stability, performance, and battery life and I've heard about some recent superbricks in ICS for the SGS2 and Galaxy Note. So I think the best option for now is to stay on GB and go with Juggernaut 5 + Beats, DSP, V6 + whatever custom kernel. Final Decision. Or maybe ROMChicago if they feel lucky.

Now since this should be flashed as fast as possible I've been thinking about how Samsung has ODIN and you can make custom images for it, so if I could just package the CWM, System ROM, kernel, and Blaze 4G radio into an ODIN package. Flash it in like 2 minutes, setup V6 and be done with it.
I've been searching for some guides to create packages but most of them only show how to create it as a backup from the current ROM.
personally, i love M&S's roms, especially Bombardier. It goes super will with Synergy kernel v.10, the battery life and performance is amazing!

On a closing note, Again I wanna thank everyone for their responses and I review and write guides for ROMs so what I learned here won't go unused. Plus I'm sure someone else I know will want a SGS2 flashed.
This is the ROM I flashed for the SGS 4G in case anyone was wondering.

The phone got stuck in ODIN twice (guide didn't mention to uncheck repartition) and I had to use the one click unbrick to get into download mode again. At first I almost had a heart attack because I thought it need JTAG to fix. So thanks to the devs responsible for that tool.
Development for that phone is almost dead but if there's one thing I liked about the SGS1 series they had some awesome stock ROMs.
The most important lesson I learned is that using ODIN is like playing with fire: It does cool s*** but it can ruin everything.

I am getting much better battery life and performance using the ics leak. But I miss a lot of the features that were available on CM9.
Battery backup
Battery back-up on stock battery now rocking high on the ICS leak 1Day and 5hrs and still kicking. The new power save feature is also ausome.
Same thing here. Much better overall performance and battery life with ICS leak, compared to CM9. Used it for couple days, and there is not a single reason that I can see to go back to CM9.
This is what I've found:
ICS Advantages:
Proper driver support
Excellent UI
Better battery life
More responsive interface
CM9 Advantages:
No bloatware
Open architecture allows for more tweaking
AOSP apps
Constant improvement
Push:
In-app performance
I've found the leaked ICS more than stable enough to be a daily driver. In fact, in 3 days of usage I've had no more problems than any stock firmware build I've ever had in a phone. Heck, it's got fewer problems than the stock GB build did.
On the other hand, CM9 is *not* stable or polished enough to be a daily driver for me. The biggest problem was there were issues that were keeping the phone awake even when not used and absolutely killing battery life. Processes not being killed off properly, sensor issues, backlight and radio problems, the list went on.
YMMV, obviously - some people have had way fewer problems with CM9. It's just not the case for me.

That is awesome! You guys with ICS are making me jealous. I'll have to wait for an official release as I'm not comfortable upgrading it like y'all on my own.
Have to agree. Stock ROM is actually impressive. Fluid, and even rootable, so I got rid of what bloatware there was (which really was not a lot to begin with).
On that note, does anyone know how I can switch from CM9 to the new ICS, step by step? And also, How can I still keep all my stuff? I'm not sure if Titanium Backup will work or not on CM9, I heard it had issues.
I'm personally gonna stick with CM9 because it's more than stable enough for me and constantly improving. But switching from CM9 to LG ICS is as easy as putting the phone in download mode and running the 1-click installer.
Backing up app data via TiBU should be fine. Just don't restore system data when you are in LG ICS.

Installing LG's ICS is easy. It's getting back to CM9 (or any other ROM) that is difficult.
I haven't really had any issues with cm9 nightly. Ive been running it as my daily driver and it does a good job and my battery life goes to about 18 hours with heavy usage (extended battery). im thinking about going to ICS leak but i really enojoy the way that im able to tweak clock speeds (specially past 1.5GHz), tweak the memory and apply themes on cm9 (I dislike looking at the same thing for a while **coughcoughiphonecoughcough**) Hope to see a kernel and custom rom for atleast the leaked ICS. Its a loud call but will is it loud enough? :-/

I'm not really liking it. Might be because of the difficulty it gave me with TiBu, or maybe its because I can't use the volume buttons to change tracks on poweramp anymore. Then there's the cartoony lool and lack of CWM. I don't know, but it just rubs me the wrong way right now.

If you have root, you only need to follow the LAST steps of the unbricking guide -- starting from the heading "Restoring the original Nitro HD images" on the guide. Doing the stuff before that is just wasting your time.
If you don't have root (and can't get it to root), then you'd have to follow the full guide.
Edit: Please only attempt these steps if you know what you're doing. There may be unforeseen complications because the new ICS ROM is not fully understood at this point in time. Don't blame me if your phone stops working.
possibly

Please notice my edit to my last post. Some people have had issues returning to CM9 while others have been able to do it without any issues. Just be aware that there is still some uncertainty with what exactly the leaked ICS ROM has modified.

AOKP
Think it all comes down to what you want, I typically run one for a while, try another till I find a good home.. So far... I've ran CM10, Super Galaxy 1.8, AOKP. I'm on Super Galaxy 1.8 currently.. but i'll be swapping out and trying MIUI and giving CM10 or AOKP a shot. They are quickly fixing things with both of those for JB. But flash one, give it a shot.. See what you think!

It's no prob. Just spend some time looking at them.. read some of the post (later ones in the thread) to see what issues/problems are being tracked and fixed. Best thing is.. you can always flash another if ya don't like it (I currently have 3 on my SD card lol)
If you are looking for an all around good battery life and super stable setup. Both the Gingerbread Blazer ROM and ICS Blazer Rom are great. I got 5 days on one charge once with the GB Blazer ROM.
Well I was using Caulkins' but recently tried The Universe and Blu Kuban. And I really really like Blu Kuban.
I've been using Phantoms CM10 and I love it, JB is the way to go
CM10 nightlies.. if I could only figure out how to get the mounts changed because I don't use an external sd card..
I agree on the cm10 latest nightly but make sure to flash 5.3 first or it may give you sdcard errors.

For daily use CM9 beta 1. I don t think CM10 is quite polished enough although its fun to try out and see whats will be ready soon. For touchwiz roms my recent favorite is Coalition black
No-Name was what I ran the longest.
About to switch to nightlies from the 5.3 alpha CM10 from Phantomphreak53. I loved the theme in No-Name, and battery life was fair. I got to say though, the CM10 is the coolest thing I seen on this phone since I tried Hybrid Paranoidandroid ICS. Tempted to try the JB version. I got two batteries and on CM10, I get 4 hours on one and 5 on the other. On No-Name I got 10-14 hours on the bigger battery, with 2-3 hours screen time.
No google Now on No-Name.
Google Now works good in CM10. The 5.2 has SD cards backwards, and it gets flopped in 5.3. 5.3 has more bugs. google search gets an update after installing the ROM (that doesn't happen in 5.2) and using the keyboard and typing in chrome or built-in browser is causing FCs. I think it may be from taking the search update, just haven't tested this yet. The Apollo app in 5.2 kept adding the same songs to the list every reboot. I moved the music from external to internal SD and that fixed the issue. Bluetooth pairing was instant in 5.2, but I had to remove and repair every time in 5.3. When playing music, in 5.3, turning the screen on will cause audio to cut out for a split second. Those are things I was having issues with. I like the ROM so much still, I can't bring myself to dump it. It is fast and smooth in most areas, and Phantomphreak53 will work this till it is smooth and stable, just look at his other work. Top notch Dev. there! I use my phone twice as much now with JB. May be part of why I only get 5 hours on battery.
ICS ROMs I really like:
Agats
BluKuban
PhantomHacker
For some reason or another always came back to Agats.
The day I became paranoid [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867283] I fell in love and have yet to leave. Keep in mind this is JellyBean based and still being worked on. However, I have yet to run into any real problems besides battery life, but there are some things you can do to help that and eventually it will be better. Nothing beats controlling individual app DPI settings, as wells as themes, and so on [at least for me].
cm9 beta 1. awesome battery/stability/daily driver.
I use CM10 nightlies with little issues. If you have a problem with superuser, just download SuperSU in it's place.
I just flashed Clean Blue (ICS): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1910714
Awesome because it gives a pure ICS feel/theme over TouchWiz. Been great so far!
