I unlocked rooted and flashed recovery without any problems it seemed I used adb to fastboot flash maguro 5.5.0.2 then rom manager to upgrade recovery after I flash recovery in rom manager I can boot into it fine 1 time after that I get the Android on its back hence I have to flash recovery from rom manager everytime before I enter - any ideals what I've need to do to get this to work correctly - or can someone point me in right direction
There are two files that re-flash the stock recovery on every boot. You need to delete them, then reflash your CWM. They are:
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh

I deleted the files wished I would have saved as bak then I could have received otas by restoring stock recovery and using rootkeeper anyway to put them back and set permissions

Hey XDA. I am on 4.0.4 AOKP M5. My problem is that when I was on AOKP M4, i wiped cache, dalvik and factory reset to install M5. When the GNEX booted, nothing was deleted, I didnt have to start over, txts were there, apps and music was there. Shouldn't it have been deleted and started fresh?
What am I doing wrong? Please help, any suggestions are welcome
Here is the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IyVPojN-RA
Video is hard to see, sorry. The first part is just me verifying the .zips for the rom are there.
*I tried to use wugfreshs toolkit to unroot and lock the bootloader so I could essentially start over but im on 4.0.4 and the factory img is a 4.0.2 so It came up with errors
* edit, thanks for msedek I am now unrooted with a locked boot loader. Will root later on!
Any help is appreciated

OK I wiped the phone 5 times and flashed aokp m5 I thought it try to boot without gapps this time.. when I booted up, nothing deleted and gapps still there even though I didn't flash them..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Have you tried wiping via Fastboot?
Fastboot erase data
Fastboot erase cache
Ok so download and flash a stock google image and leave your phone as new again, then do all the root /install cwm again and then try to install aokp, i suggest you to use the toolkit from development section.. Thats what i use and works flawlessly

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310 this toolkit and no, flashing the stock image dont need a wipe, just install the toolkit and follow the easy steps there for everything
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Which options do I use to do this? Please help
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
0-put your phone in fastboot and plug to pc and open toolkit
1- Select your phone version
Meaning android gsm or cdma and its 4.0.1 4.0.2 4.0.3 4.0.4. It does not matter if it custom rom just matter if cdma or gsm and what version of android
2-install drivers if you dont have or if the toolkit does not recognice your phone in the list of attached files
3-once done with recognition use option 8 (donwload/extract/flash google factory inage)
4-Select 1 then if you are gsm go for 5 IMM76I for others get the lastest
5-after that go to the directory you installed the toolkit default is c:\Galaxy Nexus toolkit, open that folder and inside theres another folder called put_google_factory_image_here so the google file you just downloaded put it there, close that Windows and then back to toolkit use option 2 flash google factory image (dont not unzip the downloaded file)
Thats pretty much it
Then after you are done open again toolkit and use option 7 one CLICK FOR ALL in fastboot mode
When asked choose cwm touch since its the lastests versiĆ³n and working kool wiht aokp m5

When I try to update when it reboots and tries to install it but then it gives me an android with an exclamation mark. What should I do? I'm on stock rooted with a custom recovery, I think its something to do with the recovery right?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
You can't accept and auto-install an OTA with a custom recovery image. You have to either have stock recovery and let it install, or use CWM to flash it manually.
What's the easiest thing to do? How would I be able to do it?

Your choice. Either flash back to the stock recovery and accept the OTA, or get a download of the OTA and flash it thru CWM.

Are they posted here in the forums? It would be nice if you could provide either one for me but if the files are in the forums I'll look for them

I'd say its easier to flash manually thru Cwm.
Ok so I flashed the radios is there anything else I need to flash now?

This is a tutorial about updating from Koush's JRN84D repack/jb-takju.zip to Google's JRO03C OTA for yakju users.
Although this kind of method isn't recommended as wiping is important when upgrading, it might help n00bs or guys who hate using TB (like me) a lot.
Prepare adb, IMM76I factory image and the OTA file (Galaxy Nexus Toolkit can be also used instead of adb).
Backup your phone with Nandroid.
Open the factory image with 7-zip, open the tar file inside, navigate to yakju-imm76i and open image-yakju-imm76i.zip.
Extract the boot.img and system.img
Flash the boot.img and system.img with adb/Galaxy Nexus Toolkit.
Go to Recovery Mode and push the OTA file to /sdcard/.
Flash the OTA file.
Reboot you phone. If your see something like a bootloop, pull out the battery and boot again.
After boot into system, you'll see Setup Wizard. Set language, GPS and personal info.
Finished. Welcome to 4.1.1!
You don't need to do all that... just boot a temporary CWM and flash the 4.1.1 update.zip .

Yup. This is what I did and haven't had any issues yet.
Me 2.
Although I forgot to flash the Superuser zip afterwards and I had to use the toolkit to root again.
The only "issue" I have is that Google ears and other apps freeze themselves after a reboot.
I have to use titanium backup to defrost them after a reboot.
Cheers!

Fastboot boot cmw_recovery.img or simply use the toolkit that does that for you.
You need an unlocked bootloader though.
Cheers!

Is the 4.1.1 update.zip the OTA file that OP linked to? (f946a4120eb1.signed-yakju-JRO03C-from-IMM76I.f946a412.zip)

This will allow you to boot to cwm recovery without writing over stock recovery? Could I use this to install su and gain root while never overwriting the stock recovery?

I am running AOKP JB and using CWM. Flashing updated roms of AOKP is fine but when i try to flash a different rom, (I've tried CM9 and 10, KyanRom, and paranoid android) i keep getting the same error.
i factory reset and wipe cache and dalvik but still no go.
any ideas of what i might be doing wrong or how to fix this?
Use Odin flash stock rom then boot into recovery wipe data and reboot done

That's an older version. You need the newest one, which is 5.8.4.7. Download the img file from the website and flash through android emulator.
Downloads: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
How to install through Android Emulator on the device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
scroll down to the "Third, alternate if unfamiliar with adb commands" option and follow directions.
Beware that once you install this version of CWM, your previous nandroid backups will not work, as they will get md5 mismatch. If you want to go back to the older version of CWM, simply use the method you used when you first flashed CWM (via Odin). I experienced the same thing, so I had to do some research before I flashed CM10. Hope that helped!

That works too. But for some reason, my device wasn't listed in the app so I had to go through the other process ):
So just picked up a new Galaxy S3 AT&T as my old one had a cracked LCD. I rooted using Odin, boot into recovery Clockwork Recovery, installed superuser and rebooted. Afterwards I tried to go back into the clockwork mod recovery to install roms but instead of CWM I was greeted with the factory android recovery screen instead.. I tried rooting a few times, each time shows clockwork mod recovery but after a reboot it reverted. This use to work on my previous galaxy but this new one isnt taking it..
version 4.1.2 Just got it yesterday.. Any idea?

This is not the AT&T galaxy s3 forum. This is the GT-i9300 (international) forum. Top of teh screen is a "type to find your device" box, which you can use to locate the correct forum.
Or better yet, use the /!\ report button to the top right of your post to report it for a moderator to move it to the correct location.
Lol I did not read your post right :silly:
I do apologize I thought this was the US carrier.

Thread moved to AT&T Q&A.
Check for a file named /system/etc/install-recovery.sh on your system partition. That will try to replace the recovery when the phone starts in case it has been corrupted.
Try booting to recovery with Rom manager.

I've tried doing it this way. I have both clockworkmod recovery and Team Win Recovery Project just now.. clockworkmod works via rom manager but TWRP does not.. hmm booting into TWRP takes me back to the default android recovery
Root phone, install super user, restart phone, download rom manager, install latest cwm recovery, reboot in recovery, press reboot phone, disable flash of stock recovery, problem solved.
