[Q] [q] Have 2 EVOs, windows 7 recognizes 1 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have 2 EVO 4g's... I have successfully rooted one of them, but when I try to start on the second. My windows machine will not recognize the second one. I boot it up and select Fastboot, connect it to my computer and it does not recognize my device. Just gives me "Unknown Device".
If I do the same things with the phone I already have rooted, it successfully loads the HTC Fastboot driver.
I need some help in trying to figure out what is so different about the second phone.

Ok, seems that there is an issue with the 2nd phone that it isn't recognized in any way via usb. It won't even get recognized to be mounted so that I could copy media to the sd card.
Is there any fix for a broken usb port on the evo?

Complete replacement can be done or re-solder the port itself. Be careful in selecting who does it or how it is done as this could ruin your board if done incorrectly.
I have also seen a complete replacement done and the EVO charged great but still would not sync. Problem was that the tech used wrong part. So be sure it is a new port for an HTC EVO.

Problem with computer not recognizing phone properly

Here's the issue for me. My computer is not recognizing my properly, or it could be the only way around. The phone only charges, and is never picked up as a usb disk drive. I have confirmed that it's a problem with my phone itself, as my friend's EVO 4G, hooked up to my computer using the same cable, connects and is recognized as a disk drive just fine. We tried swapping out microSD cards to see if it could be something with that, and his phone was still picked up fine with my microSD in it. I think my phone may be partially rooted.
I tried SimpleRoot 1.47.651.1 on my phone at my friend's house a few days ago (4-click method), and for some reason, it never completed. His computer would pick up my phone as a disk drive perfectly fine, but on the last step (reboot and scan) it would never finish, even after letting it sit for a few hours; step 3 was saying something about not being able to identify the correct cache from the browser or something like that. I'm thinking that the partial root may've flubbed up the phone?
Right now, I'm trying to look up which root method my friend tried to work on my phone. It involved PC36IMG.zip and an update named s-u-*something*. I'm still new to the EVO, not like the Droid. Anyway, that root method failed for some reason (no errors in HBOOT, but never asked if I wanted to reboot). I've tried to factory reset, and nothing. I got my phone sitting here while I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what to do. I'm well-versed in ADB, but if my computer can't pick up my phone properly, it's all for naught. Anyone have any ideas to get me on the right foot? I can still pop out the microSD and put it into the computer directly, too. Sorry for the tl;dr candidate.
Quick update/bump.
I upgraded my phone to OTA Froyo, and now USB debugging shows up, but I don't get the "Connect to PC" menu still. Is this phone fubared?
HTC Sync not recognizing phone
I was having the same problem with 2 Evos. The phone would accept a charge from the USB port and the computer would even install the driver sometimes. Then nothing. I tried again last night after I pulled the 2.2 update and it worked! I think HTC might not have had Windows 7 Starter edition covered until this update.
Here's the thing, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I'm having this problem on 2 EVOs, also. I've updated them both to stock 2.2 OTA, and still nothing. =/
I did just read on here somewhere that a fix was to delete the drivers for the phone and sd card and reinstall them.

[Q] WinMo wont connect via USB since new Froyo installed.

I was trying to put the hum/hiss sound fix on my sd card and I cannot get my pc to connect via USB...
My wife has a TP2 and it connects fine...
I have tried with/without the sd card in, rebooted the pc and phone, rebooted the phone while connected to the pc.... nothing...
wtf...
anyone else with this problem?
PS... NRGZ28 had posted a very basic rom for booting to android back in Feb and it is now gone from hotfile. Anyone know of a quick boot into android?
- Try a different computer
- Try a hard reset
That are the first thing you should do.
Tried hard reset...
Dif PC is not an option at the moment... I have rebooted...
Just flashed the ROM (NRGZ newest, thank goodness I had it on my SD card) and I still cant get it to sync...
I have attached the USB error I am getting... (Win7, new install)
The phone is not asking if I want to active sync or use as storage???? wtf...

Reboot your PC? lol bet your tried that already...
Try this:
settings > connections > usb to pc > and disable Faster Data Sync then try. This way uses the generic usb drivers and maybe it will connect.
That did not work...
How do I get my Win7 laptop to see the phone with Android on it?

dont think thats working yet
Ya I don't think that works yet, it's tied to Android software drivers and the use of the USB port, since there is no drivers to control the port only to charge battery. Windows thinks there is something there, but the phones USB can't communicate back....I think this is the issue or at lease after playing around with it on my phone anyway
Not that it's a huge amount of help but might troubleshoot down to the hardware level...if you go into bootloader mode on the phone and connect to USB does it connect?
I don't think you should go that deep and dirty. My touch pro 2 works only with only 1 (non-HTC) cable of the 10 i have at home, all are the "standard" mini-USB but only one works flawlessly for communicating/flashing/syncing, the other cables either do the same error - device not recognized - or windows says that the device could communicate faster - and only copies files slowly.
All in all: you should simply check with another USB cable or if you have the factory HTC cable try it with that. I noticed that the cable i am using other than the HTC one is a very good quality thick (low-resistance and double-shielded) USB cable and it never failed on me.
One other thing you should definitely watch for: plug the USB cable into the motherboard USB port directly (on the back of the PC where you plug the keyboard, mouse etc.), sometimes PC cases with front panel USB outputs simply die, or are wrongly attached to the motherboard USB header and it can cause the aforementioned problems too, not to mention if it is wrongly attached it could harm your phone too.

Do I have a bricked usb card?...HELP!!!!!

Hi all...bare with me here, I posted this earlier, but in the wrong forum section so I am going to start over here.....thanks for your patience....
Hi everyone...I have a problem..I tried to use the Firerat zips to increase my internal storage, and during the flash of the zip file the phone hung and I had to pull the battery out.....since then the usb wont mount.
I am using a Tmobile mytouch slide 3g.
I tried using the sdk and running the fastboot commands etc to get the sd card to mount...no go.
I have tried the fastboot oem enableqxdm 0 command and no go....
Note:..My sd card works fine in a card reader on my computer, I can drag and drop anything to it etc. etc.
Finally i downloaded the stock rom, and i was able to put it on the card, and rename it ESPRIMG.zip and installed it through recovery...My phone was rooted and S-off running ginger, but now back to stock...S-on, and hating the phone now...lol.....
I have been all over the web and I am so confused...everywhere you search there is something different, I just dont know what to do, Windows doesnt recognize the phone when plugged in so I cant load custom rom etc back on....AARGH!!!..I am so frustrated, and have a migraine messing with this damn thing.....lol...
Someone here suggested the MISC is bad and that a binary flash_img would fix it, but honestly, I have no idea what any of that means...all that means to me is confusion, and I have that already.....lol
Can someone please suggest what I may try doing?I am pretty savvy with computers but some of the adb/shell stuff is very confusing to me, I dont like cmd prompts...so maybe a detailed explanation?..
Thank you so much for taking your time to read my problem, I really appreciate it very much.....Dirtylarry
"Kharma...It's a good thing"
ok man im gonna try to understand the problem... you say your usb mount doesnt work but the sdcard works with the adapter, then you went back to stock and un-rooted and the pc doesnt recognize your phone? right?
So it looks to me (just an idea) that the problem is your cable or the port on your pc... just beacuse your sdcard IS working in your phone as well since you used the ESPRIMG.zip(wich was really unnecessary) and you flashed it using the sdcard obviously.
Now you need to find a way to root it again just like you did the first time... dont mess with the drivers since you havent changed them in your pc (i guess) and try this guide....
http://richard.gluga.com/2010/08/complete-guide-to-rooting-and-hacking.html
Now all i can say is ALWAYS DO A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE MESSING WITH YOUR PHONE. And check the cable/ports... thats the only problem i can think of...
well the fact that I have 3 computers that all used to recoginize the phone just fine is what's weird....none of them do, nor does my usb connection on my car stereo...the computers all say "USb not recognized" etc. etc. and the car stereo says USB N/A .......So i'm just at a loss as to what is going on here....Any ideas????? Thanks much ....Dirtylarry
Try installing PDA Net. It installs USB Drivers and resets the registry. One day it would work, then the next day it didn't work, reinstalling PDA Net worked every time.
Thanks Wave_Sailor, I tried the pda net install but it wont work....Everytime I try it says that it can't handshake to the phone, and then gives me an error code 103, I have tried many many times....also, in the device manager for computer it shows a yellow Exclamation mark everytime I plug the phone in listed at "Other Devices", and says Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM....So I googled, and found another thread saying Install Windows mobile 6 center, so I did, and nothing changed.......ARGH....DIrtylarry
Do part III, but while the phone is unplugged, download and install HTC Sync, and then plug the phone back in.

Ok...I did EXACTLY what you have suggested, and in the driver information box this is what I got after the install....
USB Composite device installed successfully
USB Mass Storage Device Failed
Mytouch slide tmobil installed successful
Still a no go on the Mass storage device......hmmm.....so weird of a problem to have....I would have thought that clearing everything on the phone and going back to stock would have done the trick......any more ideas?...Thanks so much for your help.....Dirty
Have you checked in device manager on your computer to see if the mass storage device has a yellow triangle? I just went through the same thing but in reverse. My pc would see the sd card while in my phone but not through the reader. I still haven't gotten it straightened out either, just learned to live with it.

Make sure you don't have any drivers disabled. Ran into that problem with a different phone. I had one driver disabled so it wouldn't install some of the other drivers.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using Tapatalk
Ok...just checked,...no drivers disabled in device manager...has to be something wrong with phone...its a/most like the driver is missing from within the phone or something...isn't there some way to get this back to where I could root it and install a custom rom again without the USB to phone connectivity and use my card reader to get some sort of files back onto phone that way?
ok....well I re-did the whole flash process over, and I am now rooted again once more.....I dont know how or why or what...but I am now going strong again.....lol thanks for the help everyone,

USB problem

I'm running cyanogenmod 7 on my evo 4g and when I plug it into a computer it only charges and never prompts me if I want to connect as a disk drive. It used to but now it just stopped. I had a backup of my rom so I put it on my girlfriends evo and hers still connected to the pc like normal but mine will not give me the option to hook up through USB. My computer says unknown device. Any help would be great. I can provide more info if you need.
More info. It gives me code 43 in windows 7. I was able to hook it up in xp but when I tried doing anything it no longer was able to detect the phone. I did a factory reset and it still doesn't work. I'm at a complete loss. I feel the only thing left to do is revert completely back to stock losing root and starting from scratch.
perhaps try completely uninstalling the device from windows in Device Manager. Then plug it in again and let it re-install the drivers

I've tried that on two different computers with windows 7. My gfs fone reads fine with the exact same rom but mine wont.
It seems like the drivers on the phone are corrupted or something. At one point I found a forum that suggested to turn off bluetooth and a few other things. I decided to see if turning off my wifi would do anything and finally my phone showed the usb debugging notification and the mount as usb notification but it wouldn't mount so I restarted my phone and now it's back to doing nothing but charge the phone.
The only difference between the two phones is the rom then? Perhaps make a backup and flash a different rom or re-flash your current rom to see if that helps

I actually took a backup of my rom and put it on my gfs phone and hers worked. we had the exact same rom. I will try installing a different rom however and i'll let you know what happens.
Okay so I had a back up of sinister rom so I restored it and now it asks me if I want to connect as a usb device and so I do and my computer still says usb device not recognized or whatever.
Wow so I tried a backup of sinister rom that I had and suddenly it asked if i wanted to connect as a disk drive but windows was still saying usb device not recognized. I reverted all the way back to stock losing root privileges and it still doesn't work. It appears to me that it is a hardware problem. I don't know what else to do.
ok, so I hooked my phone up to a computer with ubuntu on it and my phone showed up but then when I went to explore the sd card it said permission denied. Then I hooked it up in windows 7 and it showed unknown device under universal serial bus controllers(as usual) but it also had it under modem, which is what I want.
Okay, got it working on this computer. After plugging the phone in several times it still said device not recognized. I have also been pushing ##data# and it was saying the same thing. I decided to shut my phone off one last time and when I hooked it up i pushed ##diag# and now it works. ****ing stupid. Glad it's working now.
UPDATE: Now all of the drivers install when I plug the phone in except the HTC DIAG doesn't appear even when i enter diag mode on the phone. this is the only driver i need installed but i can't install it because the computer isn't picking up that part of the device....This is getting irritating.
Turns out my port is ****ed up. I'm gonna have to order a new one and replace it.

since you install the drivers into multiple computers and tested them all... it might be your phone.
First can you give more detail on what happens when you plug your phone in? Does your computer make any sounds or searches anything?
ALSO Try installing kies.
if that doesn't work either... looks like you need a warranty exchange
Try using an oem Samsung usb to micro usb cable. I had this problem with my Samsung Galaxy Epic a while back. Everytime I used a generic cable lying around my computer would not recognize my phone. When I used a Samsung cable it worked. Your computer should automatically identify your phone using the right cable. If not re-install them and don't forget to restart your computer before attempting to connect to your computer again. Good luck.
I've had this problem too.
Initially I had kies installed and had to launch the program to access the two 'mounted' removable drives.
I assume the drives mount, but you can't access the drives?
If that's the case, look on the phone and pull down the status bar and check to see if it sees the USB connection. Select that, and allow it to connect as USB storage.
thanks guys for all the quick response.
The problem seem to fix itself. After removing and attaching the USB cable a number of times, the PC suddenly recognized the phone.
I don't know what fixed it.
Now, I can proceed to root my phone!

you probably didn't give it enough time for the pc to actually install the needed components.. it takes a good 5-10 mins for everything to finish installing
I'm faced with the same problem. Only different is, as soon as it shows connect to usb from the notification bar if goes away. I tried the usb tool in wireless but still wont work. I tried the samsung cable as well
know it sounds dumb, but have you rebooted lately? mine wouldnt recognize the sd card when plugged into comp....rebooted....all is well
