Poll for those who came from an Epic Touch 4G - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I was a Sprint/Epic Touch 4G user and recently switched to T-Mobile. The galaxy nexus is the best phone for T-Mobile IMO. I was going to get the TMobile Galaxy S2, but the price was very similar to the Nexus and I didn't like the Snapdragon processor as I found it laggy in the EVO 3D. I figured the Nexus' IMAP processor would be similar to the Exynos processor... only to find out it's laggy as well Comparing both phones side by side, I'm going to miss the smoothness. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this as well.
By laggy, i'm referring to screen transitions, swipes, video playback. They're all noticeably behind compared to the Exynos processor.

What lag? Mines smooth as butter.

do you mind sharing which ROM/kernel/settings you're using?
I'm actually rooted and running AOKP 37 + franco kernel. Going to spend this weekend playing with some settings but I'm doubtful i'll experience something smoother. I know i'm going to get used to it though haha.

I use AOKP 36 and GLaDOS kernel but try different combos, each device is different.

Skankwich and Samurai kernel. So smooth I haven't even had to run the V6 supercharger. ( it has an option make scrolling faster and smoother). Super slick... want video proof?

great, thanks. i'll look into those items later tonight

I know what you mean though, I came from an i9100 and international Galaxy Note so I was worried about the processor as well but it holds up well.

How's the performance above a Tegra 2?

My G2X is showing its age and with the $400 price tag on Google Play this phone is looking pretty good. Thing is, I'm not sure if the performance boost is worth it.
So if anyone here has used that phone, or a Tegra 2 device in general, can you tell me what kind of improvement I might be looking at? Web browsing and maps/navigation mainly.

Easy. Pure stock Android on ice cream sandwich vs phone not being updated by its manufacturer. I'd make the upgrade regardless of its processor.

Most of the performance increases will come from the upgrade in RAM and the better software.
LG's ineptitude isn't the biggest deal, I don't run their stock rom. It could come into play with crap drivers though.

I had the g2x and the nexus is way better phone overall. My son has the g2x now and currently running EB ics. The screen alone on the nexus is a plus and the fact that it is directly supported by Google. Nvidia still hasn't released its drivers for g2x. Will be buying only nexus phones from now on.

Agreed with buying Nexus phones only. After going from G1 to a Samsung Vibrant... I already started regretting the purchase due to Samsung's poor implementation with the whole "RFS" and ext4 fiasco causing "lagfixes" and the #NeverAgain twitter protest.
Nexus phones all the way. It's the way Android meant to be made.
Do it man! I came from a G2x as well and this is WORLDS faster than the G2x. ICS on the G2x is no where near how it is here. The screen is better and development is 100x better. Guarantee you won't regret it.
Personally I like omap over tegra. I don't know the performance difference. But I'd definitely make the switch. Anandtech prob has a good benchmark comparison.

looking at switching from GS2 to GNEX

The Main reason I am thinking of switching over this phone is because development on the gs2 isnt really kicking anymore and I love switching thru roms on my phone. what do you guys thing about the dev situation on this gnex? looks like there is alot going on here to me.
Thoughts?
Lots of roms that are similar and some stock aosp roms that will be obsolete when ota arrives. My favorite is the codename android one. Obviously cm9/10 as well

Cant beat a nexus device and go with team baked. I believe they will be updating later today. I dont know how to share a profile from google+ but if you go to teambaked rom or teamicemods.com on the site you can see it.

I came from an epic touch 4 G and never looked back I love the Galaxy Nexus and can't wait to the new 1 is revealed!!
There's so much going on w/ the gnex, you can't keep up w/ it all. Always something to try if you don't like what you tried...different flavors for everybody. The only problem w/ having a gnex is you may become a crack flasher...
I hardly stick to one rom. So many to try, n most of em are frequently updated. I found the lack of kernel choices in the s2 forum.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
You'll be happy. Aosp just works on this phone. You pretty much never see a what works and what doesn't in any of the ROM threads. There's also no weird bugs or reason to flash back to stock Like to get a GPS lock or update the prl like many of galaxy s2s have to do.
Even with the higher resolution screen and different GPU the galaxy nexus still runs ICS and jellybean much smoother than the s2 in my experience. I have ran cm9 on an epic 4g touch with that my friend has. It is so much less buggy and smoother on the galaxy nexus.

My other half has a SGS2. I personally think the phones are roughly equal.
GNexus has a better screen but the S2 has a better camera. Roms for GNexus are more stable but S2 has proper dual boot kernels etc. In terms of performance I find them about the same.
It'll be more of a sidegrade than an upgrade, but it's great owning a Nexus device and getting the latest Android updates right away.

I switched from a GS2 to the Galaxy Nexus because I wanted the HD screen.
Other than that, the experiences really aren't much apart.
The GS2 will forever have a special place in my heart as the exynos proc they used is such an amazing piece of technology.
Still, and will always remain the fastest GB phone ever produced.
I switched from a GS2 to a Galaxy Nexus when I dropped my GS2 and destroyed it. It's not the biggest upgrade, but I love the HD screen and how smooth it is. I just wish it had the GS2's camera. My only complaint.
I switched to the galaxy nexus and gave my gf my sgs2, both are great phones, I'm happy with my choice and stable ROM development is a plus

I think it's safe to assume most people that have moved from a Nexus to an S3 wouldn't continue to lurk in the Nexus forums. Probably best to ask in the S3 forums :good:
I love my Nexus and will always stay Nexus for the stock Android experience and abundance of ROMs. That said though I did try a S3 4g/LTE model today and was MIGHTY impressed with how snappy it was with Jellybean.
I've been tempted several times. Its the physical buttones that are holding me back.
I recently had the chance to get it myself. But I couldn't do it. I was looking at the aosp development, and from what I'm used to it was weak. I could live with touchwiz but I just don't like it. The physical keys where also a downer. Just something I wouldn't like to give up. And since i already have a quad core tablet there really was nothing besides a better camera and even then the gnex camera is pretty good I don't listen to what others say I know what I've seen it do.

The latest Touchwiz is pretty bad. I had TW ICS on my tab2 and just recently we got TW JB on the tab2. I don't know if the SGS3 will get something similar but this latest version of TW JB on my Tab 2 is slow, the browser force closes and the interface has been changed for the worst. The ICS version of TW was better than this newest version they have released.

I have both and most of the time use my s3 for the battery life. If I want to try something new or interesting I'll usually do it on the nexus. As far as bad aosp goes I'm not sure what you're smoking, we get nightly cm10 builds consistently. I'm currently running the m2 release and it's perfectly suitable for every day use. Prior to this I was running paranoid and it was great. M2 just has better battery life. Also while they do get worse battery life than touch wiz it's still better than my nexus.

Well a lot of people I know have the s3. A lot.
Anyway...I've had a lot of opportunities to play with it. It is very very very fast first and foremost!
I've mostly played with the ICS versions. So smooth and a real joy to use. The nature UX is also very nice. Its one of the best android skin I've used from any OEM I think. They finally moved away from trying to mimic the IOS look and feel with the UI which is good.
I've tried the jellybean version of the s3 just once and to be honest I could not tell a big difference. That's because the s3 is awesome with speed and responsiveness even with ICS.
The screen is excellent also, and the feel and look of the handset in the hand is nice. It looks a lot like the galaxy nexus with buttons.
I would not move to the s3 as a full time replacement for the galaxy nexus however. Simple reason being that I had the galaxy note and waiting for ICS and Jellybean was not my thing.
I'm too comfortable with quick stock updates from my nexus s days. Plus the main reason also...the galaxy nexus is insanely fast and smooth already!

I am curious about the performance of E4gT vs sgh-i957

Ok, I have been given a sgh-i957 Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE on AT&T for work and it's Nvidia Tegra 2 or Qualcomm Snapdragon Dual-core at 1.5 GHz with Honeycomb and TouchWiz is ungodly laggy and slow. First off, I know I am comparing a tablet to a phone but I am curious how the S4gT with current release and its 1.2 GHz Samsung Exynos C210 dual-core compares. I am very worried it is just the in-efficiency of Android and I am wondering if I should wait for a quad core phone like the LG Optimus G. Or if the versions of the Operating Systems are to blame. I know most of us here have customized one way or another but I am hoping someone can remember how it was before they made their device awesome. The Wimax vs. LTE issue doesn't bother me because even though Sprint swears they have LTE here in Houston a lot of people are reporting their LTE phone's are on 3g more. This will help me determine if I sign a contract today for a new phone or wait until the LG Optimus G comes out. On a side note I can do nothing custom to the work supplied tablet, LOL.
The Exynos SoC in the S2's is very fast and the Mali graphics are generally equal to that in the USA S3's. This phone shows little to no lag in any situation that I've found.

The OG i9100 and the i777 might have a word with you as they also have the same chip set as us but also includes NFC. But typically it's pretty much acknowledged that the GS2 roflstomped all the competition last year upon its release in terms of raw power. Other manufacturers came close to it though with 720p displays and sped up S3 soc's.
The reign of the GS2 only truly ended upon the release of the HTC 1x with it's S4 / Tegra 3 which was last april. So in essence. The S2 ruled the landscape for almost a year and was in a completely different class of performance. The Tegra 2 / S3 were far behind the 4210.

Sgs3 has better low light performance, less shutter lag, and it works overall a lot better. Not to say the s2 has a bad camera, it's amazing. Just not quite where the s3 is. You were asking about the gnex versus the s2? Obviously a
being a nexus the gnex gets better software updates, but speed wise it's a joke. Worse processor. Worse gpu, terrible camera, terrible battery life, pentile screen, etc etc. However if I had a choice I would STILL go with the gnex because I really do value software that much

Actually, the Nexus 4 and the Optimus G have the same processor. S4 Pro. The Note II uses Samsung's own quad core processor (same as the S3 International)
Its like comparing apples to oranges. The Optimus G has no dev support, so that's a no go for me. Also heard the camera is brutal in low light. Yet the phone has some amazing specs for a decent price.
The Nexus 4 has amazing specs, and for the price nothing beats it. I can live with no expandable memory as long as I got 16GB. Hilariously, people are selling them for $500 to $600 because they are hard to get. I'll just wait till its back in stock.
And the golden Note II. I'll get one some day. But not for $650 to $800. Imagine telling my wife we can't afford the mortgage this month cause I bought a phone Lol. Almost as stupid as people paying over $800 for a iPhone 5. Ludicrous.

Correct, that's my mistake I thought the Note II featured the same S4 Pro found in the Optimus G and Nexus 4. The international Note II and apparently the US versions as well have the slightly upgraded Exynos 4212 @ 1.6ghz compared to the original 1.4ghz 4212 found in the International S3. To be fair though the S4 Pro might be a tad bit faster and more secure, not sure if you heard about the Exynos kernel exploit but the S4 Pro seems a bit of a better option at this point.

And according to this test : http://mobileraptor.blogspot.ca/2012/12/google-nexus-4-battery-life-tests.html
if you only use your nexus to make call, you'll be fine. However, for everything else, the battery drains a lot faster than the GS3 :
