[q] front camera - HTC One X

if i try taking a picture using my front camera, its really blurred... is it normal?, because i had some phones before that only have VGA Frontal Camera but the images seems to be fine...
i know that we have a great Main camera, but there will be times that you need to use this front camera especially if no one will took picture of you *with you're friends/gf* LOL.. because its hard to use main camera since there's no camera button...

You probably need to get in there with a cotton bud.
You can always use the main camera with a 3 or 10 second timer.

i already did clean the lens... crystal clear but still its worst than most of VGA frontal cam?
thanks for the advice about the timer, but i'm still hoping for much better frontal cam...

The front camera is garbage. Mine makes me look bright pink! The main camera quality is also pretty average, I find it no better than my old Desire HD.

will there be an app or ROM that can fix this?
sometimes there are bits of violet color, which make me look like barney.. LOL

For the red tinge, try dropping the saturation to -1. I don't have any focus problems tho.

cleaning the lens worked for me

my front cam looked really horrible for a while... blurry, tint was way off, grainy, lots of artifacts. cleaning the recessed lens definitely did the trick for me.

Make sure you're well lit. Here's a sample from my camera for the quality you should expect.

Desire camera issue - fotos fuzzy in the middle

I seem to have an issue with my desire's camera.
Fotos are always fuzzy in the middle, when the focus is farer than 5 meters away. no matter which resolution or setup i choose. The autofocus dosn't work like it should - only the edges are correctly focused.
Please tell me that it's just a software bug... is there a chance to solve this?
Is there anything on the lens or the cover? Could be a smear or other obstruction

my first desire had to go back and be replaced as the camera wouldn't take pictures that were in focus (even though the autofocus feature would appear to work), so I would recommend swapping this for another device

How good is the camera

How would you rate the camera of DHD? Lets say 10 is TOO DAMN GOOD and 1 is VERY BAD.
and how about it if you compare it with Dell streaks camera?
Not good at all. Anything at night will be blurd. Even standing still allowing the camera to fully focus gets you a blurred photo. May have 8mpg but the lens is rubbish therefore you will never have that good of a photo. Video is ok all in all as its 720p.
Camera : 3/10
Video : 8/10

what about the shots in day light? are they good? i don't take much shots at night but in day and some indoors, so how about them?
Daylight shots are, in my view, superb. Low-light shots are pretty bad, as the other guy said earlier. That's true of all camera phones I've owned though...

I use the camera not very often. The quality and easy to use are not very good
Camera: 2/10 (My HD2 take better pictures for sure)
Video: 5/10
I allready send back two DHD for replace.
(with blur problems).
HTC really disappoint me...
Now i will whating for the Galaxy S2 release.
Camera: 6/10
Video (daylight): 9/10
Video (low light): 4/10
The quality highly depends on how much light is available, I've taken some awesome camera shots and some which were really poor. If your buying the phone only for 8mpx camera, don't bother. It's not all about the pixels.

completely agree +1
For me the camera is not that good considering 8mp
I see areas of quality in certain parts of the shot with the rest appearing blurred, and yes the lens has been cleaned with the correct type cloth.
My first pictures made me think about the issue of round lens, square picture, the edges all looked blurred and only the centre was focused.
I have read that altering the default settings from auto make a difference, but not for me, it is only used as an emergency camera.
Video is OK, even 720p, but again, not a perfect device.
But when you remember this is primarily a phone saves having multiple devices
I think is great. There is a guide somewhere here you can use for better results

If your recording in bad light conditions (eg. inside your house) then yep, that's normal...
So has anyone of you compared the pics with those of a streak? It is my 2nd choice after DHD and since DHD's camera is not that good i am cosidering Dell Streak, so anyone who has compared them?

Camera HDR feature

Do you think the HDR feature enhances pictures?

It enhances colours i think, like comparing dvd to HD. I love it
heard in software version 29 they are improving the feature too should look even better

Yes if you have stable hands. as it takes 3 shots (i think) at different exposures and merge them. to produce one detailed picture with sharper and more vibrant color at least depending on the shot.

It works as long as you have steady hands. It takes one overexposed shot, one underexposed, one normal, and combines all the best detail and colors from each shot to get the best image.
So you can have photo of a bright foreground subject with good detail, and also a good detail/brightness background.

No, it enhances the dynamic range of the picture. No for fast moving objects though because it should work by taking several shots at different exposure settings and combines them to achieve that effect. Basically you have the white and near-white differentiation from the under exposed shot and the black and near-black from the overexposed shot. That way you have neither overblown ares in your picture (white spots) nor dark areas (black spots).
Compared to our eyes camera sensors have relatively small dynamic range so HDR helps there but sometimes it makes the shot unrealistic (which might be the desired effect)

The camera APP is pretty terrible. I LOVE the UI though, but it compresses images waaay too much. I use a third party app to bypass the compression, and the quality is so much better

this also depends on the surroundings and the light situation.
just an example - HDR with stock camera and no tripod, just held the One X in my hands. (dropbox link)
@submission7
so yes, in some situations, HDR can produce a better outcome/photo.
just try it out and you'll find for yourself when/where it works best

I heard camera FX does but not sure.
I tried the HDR yest during sunset, my wife had the sun behind her and seriously amazing stuff all you have to do is a hold still for a bit, i took like 10 photos all without any ghosting, its not like Desire HD where you had to really hold still for a normal photo lol!
amazed to say the least, sorry its photos of my girl so i can't share them
Camera360 also bypasses the compression.
But with the last update (1.29) the stock camera app improved as well...
A really nice, upcoming app is Camera FV-5. The developer already announced many improvements/bugfixes for HTC One X.

Hi, i'd like to know how did it improve, is the image compression better? or anything else ?
compared to the previous firmware versions (1.26 & 1.28) the compression isn't that strong any more.
compared to other camera apps however, it's still strong(er), but personally I can live with that.

HDR has nothing to do with ghosting though It just takes properly exposed, overexposed and underexposed shots of the same thing and merges all three.

PS do other phones have this capability ie not the one series or is it fairly unique to us like the multi snapper trigger happy mode

The phone takes three images so if you move the camera after pressing the shutter you will see ghosting. The One X shutter lag is shorter then the DHD that's why it's easier to take HDR with the One X.

yes it does, if you or your subject move you get difference in the three images and hence some ghosting
the fast shutter speed in the One X is helping immensely in this regards

True in a way, but the essence of a HDR image is one being overexposed, hence a slower shutter (or depending, a software EV+ and keeping the same shutter speed).

Picture/Camera Problem

I'm finding that I generally have to edit all my pictures after taking them. The white balance is always off meaning that whites appear yellow or pink. Anyone else seeing this? I've ensured my camera settings are reset to default but it doesn't help.

i too am not happy with the camera performance .... in my opinion pictures are not sharp enough and a bit 'foggy'.
I had a Nokia 5800, with a 3.2Mp Carl Zeiss camera was much much better!

Nothing to do with any of these though. The reason why they are "foggy" is cos HTC deemed it ok to compromise quality for speed. Which is how they manage to do the really quick burst shots. I use a 3rd party camera app for my photos to bypass this.

thanks for the tip, but the One X is sealed ... and I do not think that it is a cover issue. I compared my photos with those found online as demo pictures and pics look the same. Dont take me wrong, the pictures are good, but for a high end phone I expected much better. My previous cheap Nokia has a much better camera. And if you compare the One X with the Lumia, there is no comparison.
no i dont mean the phone back cover that is sealed with the phone but the cover that u might have bought as an accessories to ur phone... coz my cover really messed up my flash and caused all the pictures to be really foggy..
i am not using any covers
then clean your lens with alcohol & fiber cloth
Some research has shown its just the stock camera app causing the problem. Also given that you can edit the pics to fix the colour issues, it's definitely to do with the Sense camera rather than something like lense dirt.

Samsung have the better camera if only because they've made a business of making cameras. Nokia have always had fantastic cameras. This was meant to be HTCs entry into that world but pink/yellow tints are ****ing that up.

Outside, in daylight, One X camera is superb! But using indoors, and especially when not using flash and with Night Mode ( while camera performs very good) every picture is heavily yellow based. And EXTREMELY saturated.
In photoshop, auto white balance and a -25 to -30% desaturate usually fixes the problem.
I am not saying that the camera is crap, but for a high end phone I expected much much more in terms of camera. I do not know how to describe it but the photos taken with the HOX seems to have something missing.
This site has some good photo comparisons and when you open the photos in full size, the difference is very evident especially with the iphone.

Discovered a Camera (front) trick....

Everyone knows the weakness behind our Back Camera.. but does everyone know how POWERFUL our front facing camera is? I bet you didn't know you can crank the ISO to 12446 on the front facing camera
You can now take selfies in almost pitch black rooms (and come out grainy, but visible).
Inside the "Selfie" mode, click on EV +2 and go into a dark room.
Your image will automatically being super grainy but you'll be able to see yourself like no other!

Does anyone know if the rear facing camera has an IR filter on it? That may explain this, because if the rear facing camera has a filter but the selfie one does not, the selfie camera will let in more "light", and use ambient IR to illuminate your face slightly more. That's just my best guess.

The reason you can do this with the front is because the camera used is exactly the 4UP sensor from the M8 which has larger pixels for better low light performance
